Few years back the Feds did a comparative study of defensive shotgun loads and concluded that the best load, in their results, was to use nickel-plated #4 buck, like you can still get from Fiocchi in a 27-pellet, 2-3/4" load going 1325 fps. Jus' sayin.
I have been shooting since 1953 when my Dad taught me on the farm. I have watched a lot of videos on firearms, and to the point, shotguns. At age 78 my 12 gauge is working my shoulder pretty hard. In looking at alternatives for me no video I have watched has been as clear and to the point as this one. Every word was informational, not extra discussion jut great information from beginning to end. Well done. A++ (I was a teacher for many years.)
💯
Take a look at the Henry .410 lever action. My right shoulder has seen some amputation surgery, so I still put a pad on the shoulder for .410.
Get a 20 gauge. I bought mine because my wife is 5'3" and weighs right at 100. And I'm 75 and arthritic. My Maverick 88 is chambered for 3" rounds but using the smaller ones saves your shoulder.
@@glennroberts461 that is what i did too ... lots of ammo choices when you can find them ...
20 gauge or 16.
Shotgun is a universal weapon. Limited range, but you should have other weapons for longer distance.
Keep your friends close, keep your shotgun closer.
Want one
limited range... until u use those weird ass russian discarding sabot, and have somewhat rifle range... for an average shooter that is
gonna be a sniper for home invasion ?
Slugs bridge the gap on distance
yep
When I graduated from the police academy, the mighty 12 gauge, was king. That being said, several people couldn't "qualify" with the 870. As for me, I love me some shotgun and have taken a couple of classes, extra training. Then along came the patrol rifle, with bells and whistles. Anyway, I'm retired now and I do have a rifle set up, but a Remington 870 w/ a Stream light forend, loaded with #4 reduced recoil, along with reduced slugs, protect the home front. Standing by in cruiser mode, barrel down. Stay safe and respond accordingly!! Love me some shotgun ☺️!
Best educational I've seen yet on shooting a shotgun in close quarters. God bless
Allen, mixup98 and his son, Paul Harrell, and the couple from She Equips Herself have some of the best vids I've ever seen. And Allen knows his shotguns. Cheers!
Self defense is your right, more importantly it is YOUR responsibility.
I will use this quote👍
Hi
Thank You Allen. You are an excellent presenter, and instructor.
I have an 870 youth model 20 gauge for home defense with #3 buckshot. I have had it since I was 12 years old and its perfect for defense. Light, compact and still enormous firepower out to 25-30 yards
This is a very clear and easy to follow explanation of shot. Very good job. Thank you for making a video that doesn't bore one to death and gave enough information for people that aren't super tactical operators.
Good fundamentals for new shotgun owners. I'd just like to add that shotgun owners should never rely on the 'racking' sound to scare off intruders. Also, know your environment and what's beyond. 👍
Precisely what I was going to say, thus I just say that I totally agree, and support the statement here, and the channel. 👍
👍I agree, don't rely on the slide action sound but did witness somebody sliding the action and all 3 scattered like Ferrell cats getting caught in a garbage can ,every situation different I guess, thanks for the advise be well

@J B 👍
@@marcturk4410 agree .. someone always says this but I have personally seen intruders yell "oh shit!" and scatter at that sound .. I don't think these guys are in for a gunfight when the come in.. military is different.. drug addicts are different.. but home intruders mostly want quick and safe burglary
While I have used a 12ga for decades, my favorite has become a Mossberg 20ga youth model with 18 1/2" barrel - using #1 buck. Handles like an M1 carbine and recoil is surprisingly mild.
@Travis Thacker Yes, the Spartan and Rio loads are actually ~# 2 1/2 - LOL. Should be .30 and #2 is .27, so its in-between. Thanks for the info on the 12 pellet loads.
My secret weapon growing up hunting with cousins, the 20 gauge.. Easier to put on target and much easier to get back for second shot.. often snickered at by the 12 ga. big boys, but funny, I was always able to outshoot them.
@@stephenedwards5038 But now they snicker back because you can't buy any 20 gauge rounds.
I use same for home defense but #4 buck shot
20g recoils as hard as 12 gauge. If the guns weighed the same (they don’t) it would be a big difference. Having recently shot the same make and model in both calibers I can say the difference in recoil using buckshot and slugs is MINOR. The lack of available 20g options in most stores big or small is MAJOR. Unless you’re using long barreled bird guns for hunting it’s not worth it. Buy a 12 gauge and learn how to shoot it so it’s not battering your cheek and shoulder. You’re realistically only gonna fire it once in self defense. Think about it…
Alan knows his stuff, speaks with knowledge and authority, and is an EXCELLENT presenter. And he did not once fumble the mental ball and lapse into UM's and UH's. Nice work, Alan. You are the real deal !
Years ago a friend of mine was shot with 7 1/2 shot in the chest and it killed him. Penitrated his lungs and he choked on his blood and died within minutes. I doubt anyone would have much a fight in them after taking a round in the chest. But I like this video and the big shot for home defense.
Sorry for your loss
Sorry to hear that man. Was it a hunting accident?
Sorry about your friend
@@jclaxton78 No, bunch of teenagers fighting and one that did not understand guns.
As someone who doesnt shoot a lot of shotguns this is a very helpful video for understanding them
Excellent video! It also clears-up the number one misconception of pointing a shotgun in a general direction and obliterating everything in a 12-18” pattern at close range. You really DO have to aim when you shoot.
I can already smell the cordite. Allen is a fine teacher.
Just make sure you practice if you're relying on a shotgun as a sole household weapon. The recoil on a 12 gauge buckshot is punishing even for experienced shooters used to it. Shotguns are also heavy and require good arm strength to be carrying around, which is what you'll be doing in heated situations. Make sure you can handle it without being fatigue and unable to aim and fire in the proper stance when ready to go. For women this may not be the ideal weapon for these reasons.
# 4 bird shot for inside the house and a 18 inch barrel like the Winchester Defender.
@@lindamorgan2678 Good choice. I have a Mossberg Cruiser for obvious reason.
I was thinking about the 870 tac14 for the house, would 20 gauge be better for less recoil? Or is the difference not noticeable
So I am contemplating a KSG. It's super ergonomic. Not to mention capacity to boot. Also considering a 1301. No need to rack, a little less recoil and lighter than most.
What an absolutely useful video! One of the most informative and easy to understand articles about shotgun ammo I have ever seen! Thank you so much and keep it up!
I'm a big fan of Allens no nonsense cut to the chase videos. Great content sir.
Excellent demo , clear understanding , clear audio , If i comprehended your video everybody else will breeze through it ....... THANK YOU , well needed info for these times .
A lucid and concise narrative, sir. Excellent for the beginner shotgunner. I got a 12ga 870P (model #5028) in 1981 and in 1992, a used 12ga 1100. Both swell guns. Hindsight being 20/20 I probably shoulda got both guns in 20ga. At 70 years old and after three eye surgeries my 12ga days are done. I did acquire a Mossberg (model #50335) Camper .410 with pistol grip in 1989. Added a full length stock and this is my defensive shotgun. Relatively light, easy to manage and quite accurate. I picked up several hundred rounds of REXIO .410/00 Buckshot (2.5", 00 Buck, 4 pellets) and this works well from the 18.5" cylinder bore. I find that the 2.5" shells cycle much more reliably than 3" shotshells from my gun.
Thank You for the video and information...I had fired shotguns when I was a kid but never as an adult. Recently, I purchased my very first shotgun and bought some ammo to go along with it, not really fully understanding the ammo itself. This video was very helpful and will help me in purchasing future ammo loads.
Excellent video. I am an old man and while I have 12 and 20 gauge my house gun is a 410 pump with an 18.5" cylinder bore barrel . I load it with 9 pellet #4 buck and have 4 pellet 000 buck as a back up. My patterns at 21' are a bit larger than yours. My 12s will probably be going away soon. I will keep the 20s for now but if I could only keep one it would be the 410.
Really good video. Practical, useful information, presented in a straightforward, honest manner without ego. This is how it should be done.
My preferred 'compromise' on shot size is #1 Buck: it retains a diameter closer to 00, but gives a few more pellets. Before the pandemic it was easier to find; I hope production on it increases again.
Great video! With shoulder damage, I ended up selling the 12 gauge and went to a 20 gauge. I use #3 for home defense. In the woods, for protection, I carry both the #3 and slugs. It's pretty much my "do-everything" firearm for close range defense.
Outstanding. 20 gauge and #3 buck as good as 12 g with #4 buck. Only a bear can tell the difference between 20 and 12.
@@mariohostios A 5/8 ounce slug out of a 20 gauge has about the same energy as two 44 magnums hitting something at the same time. I wasn't aware of that until I saw a ballistics test between the 12 and 20. The 12 will always be more powerful, but the 20 can get the job done if used within its limits.
@@tomhinklejr.5055 20 gauge is nothing to sneeze at, I was going to get one for my wife but she prefers low recoil 12 gauge so we ended up getting her a 12 gauge instead. As far as velocity and weight go a 20 gauge and a low recoil 12 gauge are nearly identical, but the heavier 12 gauge shotgun helps soak up recoil a little better, and 12 gauge ammo is not only more common and easier to find, but you have a greater range of shot sizes as well.
Great video. Very informative and well delivered. This is my first time watching this channel and I would bet money this guy is a retired full bird colonel.
Maverick 88, 18" cylinder bore, #4 buck. Inexpensive and great for home defense, if you can find it. Normal 00 buck has 9 pellets, normal #4 buck has 27 pellets.
Patrick Bateman 👍
I'm partial to the #4 as well. If you train properly, it's quite a s***show you can throw down in short order.
100%. My goto for home defense.
At present I've actually got more #4 than 00. Just happens to be the way I was stocked before the ammo apocalypse. I'd also point out that in regard to armor, a load of 27 pellets stands a better chance of slipping something past.
I own a Western field 20 gauge with a C-leet choke. I sadly don't understand this choke at all and worry the choke will stop a slug and blow the end of the barrel off. I currently have 00 buck in it. followed by slug and than more 00. Does this choke effect anything ?
This was really well done, I must say!! I learned a lot. You are a great teacher. Thank you!
I was bored so I hit play not thinking I would learn anything I didn’t already know.....WRONG....not only have I saved this but I’ve hit rewind a few times. Great video and great teacher
Excellent and clear explanation of the topic!! Thank you!
I love your videos
Well copied sir
Rip Debo cus u look like him💯
Outstanding!!
The best overviews, this and the secondary, of Shotgun I have ever seen. I've seen many, produced one myself. This is excellent. :golf claps:
I am a new shotgun owner and I found your video very informative , It was no nonsense presentation. Thank you so much,Pappy Kolb.
I have had my model 12 for over 50 years, It has a 18" barrel. I also have a Bond Arms Rowdy, with buck shot (00). Your knowledge will help me a lot. Thank You !
Thank you for doing this video. For a newbie like myself, your explanation is clear and concise.
This is my shotgun. There are many like it. But this one is mine.
Just finding this, Thank you for your effort! I appreciate it. I want to transition from handgun based personal home defense to shotgun based, and you are helping!
High brass # 4 shot will do just fine inside the home
Thank you for the explanation I have a 410 single shot and a 20 gauge Mossberg shockwave both can be useful depending on the situation
I damn sure wouldn’t want to get shot with a 410
@@kurkgarro2341 i don't even wanna get shot with a BB gun
Beautiful shotgun and excellent shooter too...I myself have a Winchester 1200-12 shotgun and the barrel was shortened by professional gunshop...what an excellent home defense weapon !!
This gentleman is one of my favs on YT.
Great video, lots of info to unpack
My wife has a .410. Those 3 .36 cal. balls are a revelation for home defence. Very informative video. Thank you very much.
Now thats how you make a video.direct and packed with information.👍👍👍
I've been thinking about buying a shotgun for home defense and this video is very informative and well explained by Allen. Thanks!
Love my 12ga. Ur a excellent teacher. Thank ya sir! 🇺🇲
New to shotguns ...this educational video really helped me. Thank you!
Great video, you just made me feel a lot better in my decision to get a Maverick 88 cruiser (pistol grip) and 250 rounds of #2 buck. If #4 is effective on determined animals surely #2 should be extra convincing to lay down.
Not sure about now but a few years ago, Remington sold LE low recoil 00 buckshot and slug loads. These are what I have in my 12 gauge Mossberg 590. Much softer shooting for follow up shots. Appears 00 and 04 rounds are harder to find now. I would recommend taking a combat shotgun training class to get the fundamentals down if you’re new to firearms. You would be amazed by how accurate a 1 ounce slug round is within 75 yards.
Love this video. It's very helpful in practical way. I was so sick of all those tactical nonsense videos. I was mostly hand-gunner but had pick a long gun (rifle or shotgun) after March 2020. Glad I picked a Mossberg 590 A1, because it's versatile and can use any kind of shells in this ammo shortage.
I'm in the same boat. Budget had me deciding between a shotgun or an AR. Considered my probable uses. Figured how regulations might come down (shoot, even Biden recommends a shotgun). Bought an auto loading 12 gauge, and an extra fully rifled barrel. I think I have the best compromise.
I’m ecstatic, not knowing what I had , it just felt good so I bought it and never regretted it. My Sig P365.
Excellent analysis for a practical understanding of shotguns for home defense - thank you!
If I could add one more piece of information. If you already own a 12 gauge and are considering a .410 because you're concerned about recoil, you may want to consider using mini shells. A mini shell with #00 would land a good amount of lead on your target with very manageable recoil.
Thanks I'm learning. Getting ready for em. Thank you Sir! Your my new favorite!
Great video. Very informative and easy to understand ammo topic and shotguns.
good video, I showed this to my wife. We just bought a 12 guage. NOW she understands the rounds. 👍🇺🇲😎
Thank you for this shotgun load class I really enjoyed learning about the different loads I'm thinking about getting a 12 gauge pump soon with a 20 inch barrel thank you Sir 🙂👍
Truly an excellent video. Thank you very much for the helpful information!
That's an excellent and highly educational video!! Outstanding job!!
Very nice thank you ! direct and to the point , no fluff , good advice on load choices that I had not considered .
Great information for someone considering their first home-defense shotgun. Thank you.
Great Video for first timers. I used a shotgun on "intruder alert" drills in the 1970's and 80's aboard two Knox Class Frigates. My weapon of choice in close quarters. You sound like a Gunners' Mate. BTW, I dig the hat!
Good information. Problem today comes down to what is available in your local gun shop! For new shooters especially. One thing to consider is the report that a shotgun will have indoors.
great vid...you helped me decide on a shotgun vice a pistol for my home. Thank you. keep up the good vids.
Great video for us new gun owners. Thank you. Will be shooting my Mossberg Maverick 88 this weekend for the first time. The range only allows you to use 00 buckshot. So I'll have a good feel if I ever need to actually use it for defense. Hopefully I don't. Just pumping it should make the bad guy run, if not, oh well.
As always another fantastic video!
Love your channel Sir, and I couldn"t agree with you more. My Mossberg 500 is my go to for practically everything. Pest control, waterfowl, rabbit, white tail, home defense, etc. ML&R to all!
Great tutorial and demonstration of home defense shotguns. Thumb up.
I enjoyed and thank you for wisdom and knowledge about shotguns and thier ammo.
You’ve got some great educational videos. Very helpful. Thanks
I new a young man back years ago, in the 1970's. He was one of the most likable young men I ever met. But, he was BIG, about 6'2" at least and WELL over 200 pounds, about 250 if I remember correctlly. He was a nice guy when I was around him, but he had the bad habit of enjoying a good fist fight in a Big Dance Hall. One time he was in Wichita Falls Texas in such a place, I do not know how it started, but it does seem some big guys like to challenge OTHER big guys. But some how, they got to fighting, this young man I am talking about "prevailed" in the fight. So when he left, he walked around the corner of the building and apparently his oponent was waiting for him in the parking lot with a 16 gauge shotgun with bird shot in it. When the target got close, he LET HIM HAVE IT. And down he went, he was shot in the belly mostly. But it did NOT kill him. It DID hurt him badly, and he told me the PAIN of it all was something he could NOT even discribe. IT scared him too. He THOUGHT he was going to DIE. He didn't die, but he was the most polite guy you ever met for years afterward. *It really broke an egg in him* But you know, once the memory finally dimmed, he was back to the old ways. I thought it was a lifetime cure, but alas, it was not, I even saw him in an altercation about 20 years after that.
You know, if the bird shot DOES penetrate in to the GUTS, if even ONE of those little pellet holes is NOT sutured up, if the sugeon even misses ONE, the patient will die. Just like you say, the SHOT did not truly stop him, well it did sort of, he went down in a spasm, but it did not kill him. He was LUCKY. This was in the summer time and he was not weariing a COAT. Up north were people wear LAYERS in the winter, a GOOD overcoat with a heavy short, then some thermal underwear, well, he probably would not have gone down. A blast to the FACE would do it, but under PRESSURE a head shot can be tough. My POINT IS: Birdshot is for BIRDS, not "Big Tough Guys in a RAGE". They are MUCH harder to stop than a four ounce Bird. He was 130 pounds heavier than a white tailed deer in my area. BB
Great video that was concise, informative and to the point.
This was thee most informative video that i have watched for a gun newbie like myself. I surely appreciate this video brother thank you very much please don't stop making these vids, also you have a refreshing personality i watched this 3 times so that i can remember
Thanks for another splendid video.
Everytime I watch your videos I learn something new .
Again, Thanks !!!
Always looking forward to your next video !!! 😁😁😁
Thanks for taking me to school.... this was a great video for me - new to the Shotgun world. thanks
Great channel. No nonsense, no BS.
I just recently purchase a Mossberg 500 With an 18-inch barrel. Very hard to find in my area. I walked into a local gun shop and there it was on the wall. He got two of them in and one was sold the same day..... It also came with a 28-inch barrel with three different choke inserts. It also came with a pistol grip that you can install. I own two other shotguns.a old Remington 870 with a 30 inch full choke Barrel and a Remington 1187 with a 28-inch barrel. For 2 years I tried to buy short barrels for both of them but nobody had them in stock. Could not get a short barrel for either one. Finally I just broke down and bought the Mossberg. And for the first time in a long time I was able to buy some double 00 buckshot online. The ammo had mixed reviews but I bought it anyway. They also had the same ammo in 9 pellet low recoil
Well said and concise; not a lot of technical crap you don't need. Biggest takeaway: a shotgun has to be AIMED just like any other long gun. Yea the pistol grip makes it look cool and your $700 niche Shockwave is cute and all; the bad guy will like it after you miss him and he takes it away from you. You can't stop what you can't hit and you can't hit what your not AIMING at. Doesn't matter what your using for shot size if you don't put it on target.
I needed this video! Bless you my man!
Great information you shared. I learned something again today. Thanks.
I am more than satisfied with this video I'm fairly familiar with 12 gauge pump action my friends husband is in the army an had trained me to use his for target shooting and clay pigeons so I've put many rounds down range on there property not that they have a safe place to do so aka my Thanksgiving weekend was a blast but I shot a non lethal round 1 1an a half ounce slug an probably around 40 rounds each of 00 buckshot an birdshot but almost always between 30 an 40 yards 22 to 30 for clay pigeons but not close enough to have an expectation of a close quarters engagement within my home so this was very informative an I greatly appreciate the thoughtful incite to this issue or situation depending I suppose on where u stand on guns lol first time buyers or regular hunters an anyone who can competently handle fire arms safely an confidently
Great video! Very helpful and no B.S. Thanks from this newbie.
You are my favorite gun channel!
Very good information. Looks like I will prefer #4. Thank you.
Allen, this dope was spot on, outstanding!
Very insightful video. I expected a much larger pattern, but now I know better.
Good video, shotgun, one of my Favorite tools ...
#4 buck always had larger patterns for me, at 12 yards I had 18" spread. Amazes me how different shotguns/barrels pattern. I've found the Flight control wads to be very predictable, and tight from any barrel I've tried.
I think it's the choke tube.
Your amazing man, appreciate your intelligent points and perfect explanations! Thankyou for boosting my confidence in having a shoty
If you load your own rounds, like I do, cut the flaps off the shot cup, just use the piston alone. Watch the difference in the pattern. It's the shot cup that's keeping the shot from spreading out.
Exactly! Get a cheap Lee loader or ask your handshaking friends to let you. The cup is helping it to fly out and stay tight at hunting range for ducks. You want immediate dispersion upon barrel exit.
@@jimmywoodworker8799 I got a good one for you. Have you ever heard of, ringing a shell?
Very clear......great visuals and explanations!
Good information , and though very basic for a long time gun owner.. - I still learned a FEW things ! :)
