If you are driving a longer vehicle ensure that the entire vehicle is across the tracks before stopping.
Over half of all vehicle-train crashes occur at night because drivers didn't see the train and drove into the side of it.
And many train-vehicle collisions occur because there are multiple tracks and the second train is hidden behind the first.
Most railway crossings are controlled with regulatory signs.
Drivers MUST yield-give the right-of-way-to trains. If there are lights and gates, drivers cannot proceed until the gate goes up.
Never, ever race a train at a crossing. If your vehicle breaks down on the tracks, get out and get all passengers out and clear of the vehicle to a distance of 30m (100ft) and call 911 or local police.
The exact location of the crossing is on the front or rear of the railway crossing sign. Have that information ready for emergency services when you call.

And also the reason why trains are extremely dangerous is because they can't stop quickly
You are correct my friend. Some of the bigger trains can take up to a mile or more to get stopped. All the best, Cheers Rick
I know that train can take a mile or more stop

I heard a tip, be careful crossing all railroad crossings. Railroad crossings that you never saw a train on can still be used and one day you will encounter a train while crossing the tracks.
Trains Keep On Schedule In My Area For Example Train Arrives At Glen Street Grade Crossing At 3:36 PM To Oyster Bay Then 4:25 PM To Jamaica
So when a approach a active railroad (the ones with the lights and red and white guard) if the guards are up and light are off I don't need to stop or yield I may just continue at my speeds?
In california, if there is no stop sign or red light do you have to come to a complete stop before crossing or can you just proceed with caution?
Hi Isabel Mendez - Thank you for your comment and query. And no, you don't have to come to a complete stop, but be sure to scan the crossing and ensure that there aren't any trains approaching. You might also want to roll down your window so you can listen for train horns and bells. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Another reason why trains is they keep moving forward is because they are harder to see other vehicles pass in front of them. I didn’t have to deal with railroad crossing when I took my road test back was many years ago back in 2007 around the state of California in the LA area.
I don't know what to do, if my breaks were whatever during a train crossing. I imagine that I get out of the car FAST and leave it there. Am I wrong? What should I do in that kind of emergency???
In The United States Trains Are Assinged By Schedule In My Area In Glen Cove The Trains Go Super Slow Plus Trains Show Up Every Hour On The Schedule.
Hi Byron Chavarria - Thank you for your comment. And yes, passenger trains tend to run on schedules more so than freight trains. To many drivers however, they simply don't know the schedules. All the best, Cheers Rick
Smart Drive Test In Glen Cove Long Island There’s Rarely Freight Trains Just Passenger Trains. Owned By The LIRR
Smart Drive Test The LIRR Is Eliminating 9 Railroad Grade Crossings On The Main Line Because Of High Fatal Accidents Between Westbury & New Hyde Park
2:01 was in Lafayette Indiana...
Yesterday i crossed the railroad when the lights are flashing and the bells ringing, after i crossed the railroad i saw the cars behind me stopping as the bar lowered. But the reason why i crossed was because the bar hadn't lowered yet. Now i'm so scared that i'd get caught for crossing it. Should i stop right after the lights flash?
Of course, lol
Dr. Rick August:
Many salutations! Gratitude for another insightful video even though it preaches to the choir of common sense. I believe that you would have gotten your message across more effectively if you had framed it in terms of how incredibly dangerous it is to be in the path of a train instead of the legal consequences. The MetroRail in Houston @ TX uses the Siemens S70 which has a mass of 98,800 pounds; assuming that there do exist civilian passenger vehicles with a mass of 5K pounds, it would take almost 20 of those vehicles to match the S70's mass. The fact that the average freight train has a mass of 12 million pounds is definitely food for thought even if we ignore that this mass is on metal tires and metal rails which is the same as rubber on ice.
Here in San Antonio, we have civilian motorists that turn across the bow of a municipal motor coach -- the 40-foot variety of which has a mass of 30K pounds while the 60 foot articulated variety has a mass of 68K pounds; in spite of my efforts to blow the whistle about this problem along with proposing three different solutions to correct this safety hazard, VIA Metropolitan Transit refuses to take any action and almost always discards the transit operator that ends up in this situation in an attempt to protect itself along with paying out hush money to the civilian motorist that caused the wreck.
In any case, please place your emphasis on the actual physical danger of trains and cargo trucks instead of the legal consequences. Do you think that it is a good idea for civilian motorists to pause with the emergency flashers on before proceeding through a grade crossing the way that commercial motorists are legally bound to do?
Hi Damon Mason - Thank you for your question. If you stop in a passenger vehicle before a RR crossing, you're likely to get rear-ended. You can simply scan the crossing as you're approaching. All the best, Cheers Rick
Smart Drive Test if you rear end a personal vehicle coming to a sudden stop in front of a train track that has no bar down and no train in sight are you at fault or the person slamming on their brakes to stop for the tracks?
In Guelph, Ontario, they have railway crossing and an X sign, but no STOP sign with it. Do I stop first and look? One of the examiner failed a tester for not stopping. Location Imperial Rd southbound from Woodlawn Road West.
Hi Ariel Reyes - thank you for your comment and query. Are you driving a school bus or bus? If you're driving any other vehicle--except a truck hauling dangerous goods--you simply scan the crossing and proceed. The only exception to that rule is school bus. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hello, idk if your still answering questions because this video is so long ago but what happens if the gate is coming down and a vehicle goes under it right when it starts coming down?
You shouldn't do that. That's dangerous. If this were you(which I think it is, or maybe you're asking this specific question), you could have gotten hurt or worse. When the gate is lowering or is already lowered, you wait no matter what.
All freight trains are now run as Extras. Only passenger trains are scheduled now.
Thank you for that information. All the best, Cheers Rick
Hello, how much should you slow down when crossing over railroad tracks to prevent damage to your car? Thanks!
Hi ravenspace26 - thank you for your comment and query. Usually you don't have to slow down at all, but I do suggest moving slightly to the outside of the lane to get out of the main ruts and there it is smoother to cross the tracks. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Enough that you don't fly.
Hi. If you're driving semi truck on a uncontrolled railroad crossing. Do you need to stop and turn 4way flasher?
Hi Soi Guevs - Only if you're hauling dangerous goods my friend - otherwise no. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
The question that I have been looking for..
When I am approaching the railway with railroad crossing signals I watch them just in case they start to activate and I do scan the tracks
What should a driver do if the lights start flashing right when they are about to come up the intersection or already are at the intersection? Should they slam the brakes? I’ve only stopped for train passing once, but some cars had already stopped. That’s one thing I’m scared about. I fear that I won’t know what to do if the lights start to flash if I’m already close to the intersection (or at).
It happened to me twice this year. I freaked out and just sped past the tracks. I too would like to know the right thing to do.
@@maddyinc933 that’s why I try to avoid driving anywhere a train may pass. My usual route to go to work I know the railroad tracks are inactive so I’m good. But darn, what if I have to drive somewhere else, and I come up at the intersection and at the same time the lights start to flash???
When there is an X on the pavement before a railway crossing, are you supposed to stop before the X or on the X?
Hi Bobo411 - Thank you for your comment and query. You want to stop approximately 15' or 5m from the nearest track. Often if there is a stop sign, there will be a stop sign. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Thanks, Rick!
Hi Bobo411 - you are most welcome my friend. All the best, Cheers Rick
DUH!!!
When is it legal to cross a railroad? A train was not even close but the flashing light was on and Bell but no gate. We stopped then look to see if the train was near and wasn't and carefully preceded to cross. Police pulled us over. Is it legal to cross long as it's safe?
Hi Tez Jackson - Thank you for your query. My understanding is that if the lights are active, you can't cross, but I would need to confirm that information. Where are you in the world and I'll have a look in the handbook? All the best, Cheers Rick
@@smartdrivetest thank you and I live in the state of Georgia - metro Atlanta area.
Hi Tez Jackson - I was correct my friend. If the lights are flashing and the gates are down--even if there isn't a train approaching--you have to wait. Have a look here: www.eregulations.com/georgia/driver/railroad-crossings/ All the best, Cheers Rick
@@smartdrivetest wow thanks I really appreciate this!!
@@smartdrivetest what if they are working on the tracks and the lights are flashing? Do you have to stop and wait for a signal to cross ? Or how does that work?
Do I stop before I cross the railroad even there is no train coming?
No. Just scan the tracks before crossing. All the best, Cheers Rick
My Area Doesn’t Get Freight Trains
yeah on long island we have New York and Atlantic Railway

Hey i failed.my test because apparently i didnt stop at a railway crossing but it was green.
Hi MMA King - Thank you for your for letting us know. Sorry to hear about your unsuccessful attempt. We're confident that you'll get your license on the next attempt. Do you have an address for the railway crossing and I'll have a look at the traffic light? If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. @@smartdrivetest its in the guelph drive test centre in guelph ontario
Hi MMA King - Thank you for your reply. Do you have an address for the railway crossing?, or is it at the test centre? All the best, Cheers Rick
@@smartdrivetest its on the same road as the test centre..either way What do i do at a green light at a railroad crossing? Should I stop at the stop sign even if its green or slow.down look both ways?
Hi MMA King - Thank you for your query. The railway crossing that I see is on Woodlawn Rd. just northeast of Nicklin Rd. I don't see any stop sign there, unless you're coming off Nicklin Rd. And if everything is a go, you don't slow down for the railway crossing, but rather scan in advance of the railway crossing. The most I would suggest is to take your foot off the accelerator momentarily and scan, but doin't slow down noticeably. If you're looking for a different intersection, please send me the intersection closes to the railway crossing. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
😨 today I was crossing railway line
I stopped to check both sides before crossing despite the signal was off when I was in the middle of the crossing line I looked on the right side there was train the signal turned on and the bar wasn't dropping it drops after 10 seconds of Alarm
And I tore away the crossing 😰
The train was stopped at the station and was starting to move.
😭😭😭😭why did it happen to me 😭😭
What was that I did wrong
Hi sweet candy - thank you for your comment. What a terrifying story. Fortunately, no one was hurt and it was just a little bit of damage. It doesn't sound like you did anything incorrect, but without knowing the intimate details, I can only posit that there may be something wrong with signals. Perhaps in the future, the crossing may require a bit more scanning before proceeding. Let us know if you learn any further information. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
Smart Drive Test hi
Something wrong with the signals ??😳
Thank you for your reply.
I will definitely check thoroughly next time.I always have my children with me it will take me time to get each one out before the train pass.It is very scary.
I have one more problem when I stop to check both sides there are many train signals I can't view the train too far for this I have to go closer to the track yet it's not clear because the track is in curved.what do you say about that?
I live in New Zealand.Thinking to go to council office to ask how to cross the line more safely.
Your help is most appreciated.
sweet candy hi Sweet Candy, in this instance the gates went up so traffic could keep moving, what I would recommend is waiting until you know you have space across the tracks to go before going.
dat white car be stupid
Hi XxFuzionxX Cheesy Boy - thank you for your comment. Yes, running a STOP sign is "bad form". If there's anything specific we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help out. All the best, Cheers Rick
Smart Drive Test Thanks. It is really weird that a car ran a stop sign while you were making a video on not doing it (I mean railroad crossings too).🤔
Hi XxFuzionxX Cheesy Boy - indeed. Watch this video - not one vehicle stops completely at the STOP sign: ua-cam.com/video/NuxBYfI2rhs/v-deo.html thanks, Cheers Rick
It's Called A Railroad Crossing Not Railway Crossing
Hi Byron - apologies for the late response. Yes, you are correct - in North America it is called a railroad crossing. On the other hand I can remember my PhD Supervisor lecturing me as adamantly in Australia that it was called a railway! He was from South Africa, a road scholar, and somewhat lacking in tact! LOL All the best my friend. If there is anything further we can do, drop us a note. Always happy to help. All the best, Cheers Rick
This is not the United States - Transport Canada officially calls them as Railway crossings as well.
J Groenveld Railroad IS Used Internationally
They're called railway crossings in Canada...neither is wrong, just depends on where you are.
