Underrated band. "That Song" is great also, from that album. Great musicians. All done with guitar, both 6 and 12 string...lots of effects and open tunings. "Ladylike" on their second album also has some banjo.
Big Wreck is great!! Love the Canadian bands you guys listen too. Living near the border in Western NY is an absolute blessing for the music we listen too from both sides of the border
You MUST listen to Big Wreck perform Ghosts live at Suhr Factory. It's amazing. This band is so under rated its crazy. My fiance and my friends are talking about flying from Texas up to Canada just to see them live.
Asia, that melodic sound you were trying to decipher that swells in and out, is in fact just a guitar tuned to open G Flat with delay and tremolo effects engaged and combined together. There are some other effects as well, but mostly what you’re hearing is the tremolo and the delay working together. 😊 🎸
@Stu Nah, not on this song. There is no way to do that with how busy his hands are. This is strummed rhythmically. The tremolo is doing the volume increase and decrease for you, so there’s no need or room to do so.
@Stu Sorry, but what you’re saying doesn’t line up to the reality. 2:35-4:55: The rest of the band takes a break while Ian plays the entire instrumental piece by himself. See for yourself ua-cam.com/video/83j6OYrPtRw/v-deo.html
@Stu No problem. I watched that performance prior to our conversation and revisited it again afterwards. What’s most impressive is that he IS doing that on his own and how creative and unique it sounds. It shows off his discipline and guitar skills for certain. Also, check this out because it’s highly interesting and informative. ua-cam.com/video/aE__EMPNoHE/v-deo.html
I love this band. I worked at a private airport in 1998 when I was in college, and they flew in to play the annual Buzz Festival. I had never heard of them, but their road crew handed me a few all access passes anyways. I was introduced to them standing on the side of the stage in a packed pavilion, and they were amazing. I was blown away. I then got to watch The Hunger, Our Lady Peace, Space Hog, and the Foo Fighters from the same spot. Definitely a great band but also, amazing people for giving me that experience. ❤
Yep. Big Wreck is the best band you've never heard of. Ian Thornley is a virtuoso guitarist. The solo in the middle of "The Oaf" is him playing against a live delay of himself. If you want to hear some beautiful slide guitar listen to "Diamonds". If you want to rock out, try "Locomotive". If you want to chill on the back porch, go for "Rye Bread".
This band was developed in Berkeley while they original members were attending there. They eventually left Berkeley to pursue the band full time. Awesome musicians! And they are just as good if not better live.
Great request! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 This band is phenomenal! Slept on here in America. Def Leppard is huge and these guys aren’t??? Make it make sense! The voice, songwriting, musicianship… sooo effin good!
all guitars no electronic keyboards at all that is the pure talent of this band this band is just as good if not better than the records they have been around since the late 1990.s and they just keep getting better all the time must listen to lady like ghosts there first record is a true gem the lead guitar player is just amazing to see i look forward to hopefully getting tickets this year a highly underrated and not known to the usa markets maybe through people like the both of you can spread the news about big wreck you cant go wrong with this band
Hi there. Im Ian (not thornley)😂. Check out Battlescar by Max Webster and Rush. Geddy at his finest. Max Webster is absolutely the most comic ive heard. Amazing. You will not be disappointed: Battlescar, high hats and borrowed shoes, the The party, hangover and a song from the keyboard "let go of the line" that is instantly recognisable
Also check out Ian Thornley's solo work with better production value etc. Fun fact Ian's clame to fame is that he works 2 guitar solos into every song.
Not many Artists have had the opportunity to turn down a job offer from Slash. Ian is a modern guitar god in every sense and the voice doesn't hurt either. I recommend his solo work too, such as the song "Easy Comes" off the album "Come again" to set your hair on fire
The Oaf is mostly just nonsense lyrics made up phonetically on the spot. Whatever sounded good was turned into words. Song is 25 years old. You did peg the trad country "hoedown" lick at the core. It mimics (pays tribute to) a very famous Who song from the 70's called Baba O'Riley. Their catalog is pretty wide and hard to define. Looking forward to you all discovering more. Big Wreck's latest... ua-cam.com/video/loKmYpA2qfA/v-deo.html PS Big Wreck turns out is a fitting name. A LOT of their music turns out to have it's genesis in the crashing together of multiple genres or styles or influences. They combine dark and light, fast and slow.... you can almost always find a combo of competing elements masterfully melded. I hope you guys do more Big Wreck!
Whoever requested this reaction, I commend you! These guys are amazing!!
Check out Ghosts, Albatross, Wolves, Time etc. by them. Great stuff!!!
I did like a year ago lol
Check out the channel "Africa Reacts" I sponsored two big Wreck videos on her channel
Big Wreck are awesome! That's Ian Thornley
Ian thornley is an amazing singer and guitar player. Big Wreck needs more attention.
Underrated band. "That Song" is great also, from that album. Great musicians. All done with guitar, both 6 and 12 string...lots of effects and open tunings. "Ladylike" on their second album also has some banjo.
One of the greatest bands and guitarist never heard of!!!! They’re GREAT!!!

Oh Big Wreck made it to you. Nice! Good band.

Not a steel guitar, but it was slide guitar. This has been one of my fave tunes for a lil over 20 years. Glad to see y'all give it a listen.

Rock, Folk, Blues all in one song. 💙 This album is less than a quarter of their talent going forward, and it's still a gem.
This song was what got me into Big Wreck. While they ever truly broke the US, this song was virtually on every 2-3 hours.
Next Big Wreck song y’all need to check out: That Song
If you’re checking out Big Wreck, it *has* to be _That Song._
This band was developed in Berkeley while they original members were attending there. They eventually left Berkeley to pursue the band full time. Awesome musicians! And they are just as good if not better live.
Highly underrated band…need to react to more of their songs…
GHOSTS
LOCOMOTIVE
TOO FAR GONE
LADYLIKE
OFF AND RUNNING
MY LIFE
Great Canadian Band, lot of really good songs!!!😎👍 Please do (You Don't Even Know) Love that song.
Nearly 30 years after their first release and Ian finally getting some recognition. He is one of the best guitarists alive today
Great request! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
This band is phenomenal! Slept on here in America. Def Leppard is huge and these guys aren’t??? Make it make sense! The voice, songwriting, musicianship… sooo effin good!
BJ absolutely right on assumptions of a mixture of folk and rockabilly that sells on the American market.

Ian Thornley - top 10 vocalist of all time.
The Canadian Chris Cornell!
Great band. Should be one of the biggest bands in the world.
they were pretty big here in Canada.

All hail the one or two hit wonders... people rag on them, but you have given us a whole lot of great music over the years. I had that album..
Big Wreak is such a talented band!!
Big Wreck! Yes!
Recommend “That Song” and “Blown Wide Open”.
Good stuff!
Also check out Ian Thornley's solo work with better production value etc. Fun fact Ian's clame to fame is that he works 2 guitar solos into every song.
Right on!!! My favourite band, so amazing. Check out Ghosts and Wolves! Live versions are even better than studio versions!!!
I love Asia and BJ you guys are so positive and fun! ~From Canada :)
Check out Blown Wide Open from Suhr 2015, you'll love it 😉✌️
Wife here..Liking the Folkish Rock angle..Great Reference
I loveeee this band and Ian's voice and composing
The live version is much better! The Suhr Factory Party 2015 has some great live stuff! Ian is a player and his vocals are killer.
We have lots of great acts from that era that never really broke south of the border. I Mother Earth is one you should DEFINITELY check out
I'm thinking Led Zeppelin and Lynard Skynard both had some influence here🎶
Huge Canadian band seen them many times with staggered crossing
Gotta do "That Song - Big Wreck! Please!
Nice song. Really like the sound.
The live versions are 10x better
The sound engineering at the suhr sets is top tier, Dunlop was great too
Check out their song Head in the Girl , awesome rocking song . His vocals are great on that , as well as all their shyte .
I vote rock, bluegrass, and blues.😎
I love this song but y'all need to check out " Inhale" by Big Wreck. My favorite by them!
Great band! Check out their new music. Amazing stuff!

There's some very strong The Smiths influence in the rhythm guitar, I think...
Pick any song off the 2015 Suhr Factory party... They kicked ass that night
