I had a stint as a radio presenter for a while, I was sacked because I would not stick to the playlist. Every time I played this song the phone lines became jammed with people ringing in wanting to know more about this song, who was it? Where could they buy it ?etc, etc It touched a lot of people's lives, that's what good songs & good music is all about. Thank you Nanci.

@@eamonngaynor5762 I agree with you, Rap music is sheer poison, If I was forced to listen to it, I would end up in a padded cell. Do check out Nanci Griffith singing the Jimmy Webb song 'If These Walls Could Speak', it's a live recording, just superb!

Thank god somebody agrees with me on this I do have a varied taste in music but I've never accepted rap and I never will who wants to listen to somebody waffling on In double Dutch about 'awhile cop busting my ass cos I'm black" it's absolutely degrading when you look at brilliant black artists like Ray Charles otis redding Aretha Franklin Brook bentonite Wilson pickets Sam Cooke these artists are priceless but back to nAnci griffith she was unique and we miss her

I met Nanci one night in a bar somewhere. We sat at a small bar table for well over an hour and talked. Nanci was quiet and reserved and just listened. There was never a hint as to her fame. I asked her if she had ever stayed at the Grande Hotel in Point Clear, AL. When she responded "no", I proceeded to describe it to her. My description was rather lengthy covering the venue on beautiful Mobile Bay, the oaks with Spanish moss, etc.
It was getting late and Nanci finally graciously excused herself saying she had an early flight the next morning.
Several years later, I was watching ACL and I recognized her. She sang Late Night Grande Hotel and on the intro she dedicated it to me and credited me with giving her the title. The video is available, Season 17, Episode 1 Songwriters Special and her intro is at 20.07. Ironically, the first line of the lyrics speaks of working on an early flight to anywhere but here.
RIP dear, sweet Nanci. I'll never forget that night.

After watching nancy griffith from a distance on tv last night on rte. This is her most revealing song. She never let anyone into her life. Always kept her distance. In 1996 she went into her home. Shut and bolted the door and never came out. One of her friends Rodney crowell said that any enquiries that he made were quietly spurned by her family.

In true "may you be in heaven a half hour before the devil knows you're dead" fashion, Nanci sneaked out while the world was busy with hurricanes, floods, pandemic and wildfires. I hope to go out with as much grace as she has. A vastly accomplished singer/guitarist/wordsmith that the world will not be able to replace... Now appearing nightly with John Prine and others who have gone before her. We've lost some real giants in the past couple of years, but Nanci's death is especially poignant. She's the only one who would be able to describe it aptly in a song.

This is the soundtrack to my 1991. I saw her on Austin City limits and someone gave me this video on VHS plus my partner liked her after I introduced her music to him.

Many years ago a coworker asked about my fav music. I said I love all genres but my very favorite is Nanci Griffith. She said “you can’t know Nanci…. She’s MY favorite😀

I am so very sorry to say, I have never heard this beautiful, gifted, lady sing before. I can't imagine how I missed her. Tonight I was flipping channels and stopped at pbs long enough to hear one of the most beautiful voices ever. I actually knew almost everyone on stage with her, either back up singers or musicians. I was so sad to find out she's left us. How sad I missed her. I would have loved to see her in person. But she's got it made now, one day I'll get to see her in living color, and that's still pretty awesome. I love your music princess, RIP, when we get there with you, we'll pull out all the instruments and sing for a thousand years.
