    I am old widowed and retired and am well along in my teardrop trailer build. They say a poor mans fibreglass is painted canvas. So I have covered the plywood van I built with a light canvas glued with Titebond 3 a notable waterproof glue. 60 years ago I repaired fabric airplanes with ‘doped’ fabric which dries tight and strong, also used the same method over plywood dinghies with great success.
    . Instead of paint however I chose to glue denim as a great color finish over the top of the canvas. It looks great. Am prepared for it to look wet in rain as the undercoating will seal it.
    Have still wished to add more rainproofing to the finished denim. Considered Scotchguard fabric protection but much prefer your silicon method which has been in the back of my mind since start up. Will try it...I live in Australia not rainy UK but figure if I can experiment with denim which no one else has why not experiment with silicone.
    Love to hear your thoughts and so grateful with your pure silicone method it seems perfect.

      If you haven't done this yet, I've had wicked good luck with dissolving the silicone on naptha fuel, then just dipping my fabric in it. Mix it up in a plastic bag (after testing to make sure the naptha won't melt it), then put your fabric in the bag. Knead it around for about 5 minutes, then open it just press any dry areas to wet ones.
      Once it's all soaked, hang to try - about 24 hours let's the silicone cure fully. The naptha evaporates completely and leaves no smell behind.
      This leaves a beautiful, even finish to the cloth. We use this to make picnic tablecloths out of twin fitted bedsheets, and repurpose old flat sheets into tarps.

    Have you checked how this fabric holds up over time? I hate that iron on stuff! It cracks and is crinkling! This seems so much better if it holds up well!

    Maybe you said it and I missed it but can you sew through the fabric after you add the silicone?

    I made a fabric umbrella. Spray on waterproofing didn’t really work. I’m wondering if you’ve done this method on a completed project before. Without being able to flatten the fabric on a surface do you think the tension of the open umbrella would be enough to spread this out evenly? Thanks

    How long does the silicone tube last? How much does it end up costing per yard? Is this cheaper then using Odicoat?

    Could you use this fabric to make bunting? For outside.
    Will the silicone stop the fabric fading? Thanks

      I expect this would definitely help with a fabric fading but I don't have a lot of experience in that arena so I can't promise

    Hi, wanting to make diaper covers. Is this washable???

    • @AlteredNotions
      @AlteredNotions  3 роки тому +3

      I can see how this may be a nice thing to do for diaper covers, but I would worry about two things, first, the silicone against a babys' skin (I'm not familiar with diaper covers nor babies to know how HIGH a concern this would be) and two, the washing... I'd say one layer of silicone would wash just fine, the thicker two layers I would not put in my washing machine for fear of it damaging something (sticking to other fabrics during the washing process/washing hot would be bad etc.)

    How long does is stay waterproof for?

    • @AlteredNotions
      @AlteredNotions  3 роки тому +4

      I've been doing this for over 2 years, and haven't had any problems with the waterproofing degrading. Even at the seams, the two layers of silicone meet up and don't let water through.

      Silicone is not a plastic, it is Poly Dimethyl Siloxane (PDMS) and this is also used in pharma products. Caulking Silicone uses a variant that polymerizes into a seal.
      Surgical masks (not respirators) are meant to stop liquid splatters they don't stop bacteria etc.

    How waterproof is this?

    • @AlteredNotions
      @AlteredNotions  4 роки тому +2

      Very waterproof. The exact amount depends on the silicone you use and how tight your stitches are between pieces.

    • @miloszivkovic6118
      @miloszivkovic6118 10 місяців тому

      @@jamee_maree maybe thin it down a bit, and press it into the fabric , then wipe off the surface with solvent . Nevertheless I find it separates from the fabric very easily, what holds it together is a bulk
