It was fun seeing the Lex. I was stationed on that ship from 1969 to 1971, The guns on the exterior had to be added after it was docked at Corpus. During my time on the Lex, it was a training carrier and had no gun mounts on the exterior. There were several things added inside the ship and outside, but of course, this is for the museum part of the ship. We definately did not have slot machines on board. I did enjoy the tour, its a shame that you couldn't go to the forward part of the ship and show the anchor chains and capstans that pull the anchors back into the ship. Thanks for the tour down memory lane.
@@BennyLlama39 first Lex was sunk by the Japanese, so this one was pulled out of the shipyard and put into service. It freaked the Japanese out because they knew they sunk the Lex and all it had on it was shipyard primer. It is an Essex Class Carrier and several years later the angle deck was put on. The final designation I know of is CVT-16, designating it as a training carrier.
Thank you for your service! I've been on the Lexington several times, as a tourist of course, and was able to see the anchor room and chains, very impressive! I also found it to be filled with energy, dare I say haunted, especially in the infirmary and bathrooms, like a female shouldn't be there! Great experience, though! 🇺🇸🕊️
My daddy was a sailor during WWII. You brought back many stories and memories. Thank you 😊.. by the way, bed pans and urinals.... Not a drinking cup. But got a fun chuckle. Safe journey Jacob 🤗🥰🦚🙏
Omg I love the Dr pepper shake if you can get breakfast get the honey butter chicken biscuit it's the bomb !!!! Thank you Jake for visiting the original site it made my day !!!!!
My husband served on that very ship you toured. The stairways you walked down or up, my husband fell down one of them carrying heavy machinery and it caused dislocation of his hip and severe injuries to his spine. The surgeon at the time 0ut his femur back in place w/o pain medication. His back injuries were so bad that he was flown to DC to the prestige military hospital where he stayed for several months. He was deemed too injured to serve and got an honorable discharge. He was then deemed a disabled vet. He was happy to serve.
2:53 I love the Carpetbagger Sitting next to Harmon Dobson on the bench. How many people walked by, Jacob has his hand on the knee of the statue... 😆 haha, so funny!
Wish we knew exactly when you were here. My family loves your videos. We would have bought you lunch while you were in Corpus. Take care and enjoy the rest of your trip.
Always loved our little aquarium. Haven't been in a while and they really are adding. The jellyfish area is where I proposed to my wife. Can't wait to see what happens after the north beach project is finished.
I find it funny you mention the Ladder-wells and sailors keeping in shape (24:17). I spent 4.5 years on the Nimitz going up and down those stairwells constantly every day. All I got was Arthritic knees.
Hey Man, I watch all your videos along with Adam The Woo and I have to say you seem to be a very down to earth, loving life and enjoying everything you do kinda guy. I wish you nothing but safe Travels and good health my brother and keep them entertaining Videos coming. I would love to see you do video of all of Music Row in Nashville and the Country Music Hall of Fame.
“How’s your Whatachicken?” LOL 😆 That’s a reference from the 1994 movie 8 Seconds, featuring the late great Luke Perry who played the late great Lane Frost.
My father worked on the ship for many years, I would spend my time as a little girl hanging out with him on his work days as an electrician inside a nice lady’s office playing Barbie games on a computer, playing with the old arcade like games they had, and listening to ghost stories. I still live in Corpus Area but haven’t been back in many years.
Imagine him coming but with a heads up announcement so a local cab take him around and give him some info in what goes in here and what to go check out. That be awesome!! Next time #carpetbagger!
Great video!! I have been on the USS Midway in San Diego and they had veterans that sailed on that ship educating the visitors in their sections they worked. I am a old hospice RN and I loved taking care of all my ww2 vets and all veterans I have cared for.
Born and raised in Corpus. I just recently moved... thank you so much. Not only did this video come at a perfect time, but I feel you really captured a good day downtown in the city. Ive been watching for a while from afar, but it was so cool to connect with you in this video about my home town. Thank you sincerely and to everyone who voted! Peace and love
Welcome to Corpus Christi Jacob! I was thinking if I drove around by the Aquarium or the Lex I would find you 😂 kidding! My family & I love the Lexington & the Aquarium. They have developed it so much over the years that you are right it’s a lot of fun to visit. I love the breakfast tacos at Nona’s)the one behind the for sale car sculpture). The head office of Whattaburger used to be in town about half a mile in the street where that sculpture is but they moved to San Antonio a few years ago. There is also the statue honoring the Tejano superstar Selena along Ocean Drive. And also the now closed Sunrise Mall that was a location for a scene from the 80s movie The Legend of Billie Jean. Hope you enjoyed your stay in CC! I always enjoy watching your videos.
Dolphins do fight a lot, when you see the rake marks on them it where they have been biting each other. I learnt that when I swam with them. Notice how you always see the perfect dolphin on posters never the normal ones who fight
Love aquariums they feel so peaceful . That was an interesting tour of the Lexington. Makes me want to look up more of its history. Keep Safe❤Keep Well ❤
That gentleman with the ice cream is in what we navy vets call a ship to ship transfer chair. They hook up one end of a line to one ship and the other end to the other ship. It used to be a initiation to dip the person in the water as hes transferring from one ship to the other.
My older cousin was in the Navy about 15 years ago. He said his friend got stuck between the ships in that chair and started panicking. Cousin tried to explain to us what happened, but only caught the friends freak out and not the reason for the issue. They called him Shark Bait for the rest of the time on the ship. Something about inexperienced operator, transport issues or the fact his friend was panicking and fidgeting too much. He said that no one knew exactly what happened and his friend was not sure or told not to explain. Either way, he refused to talk about it. Edit: Could be something else involved, but over the ocean, helpless was all I understood. Maybe med Vac issues, because he did say the guy was getting medical treatment from an injury.
Thanks, Jacob. I knew almost nothing about Corpus Christi so this was a nice introduction. Also, you are so funny. 11:21 It is hilarious that there is a shark floating around out there named Bob Hayes. When not murdering fish, he spends his time in a suit and tie at his office day job. On Wednesday nights, he goes bowling. 15:40 WWE has nothing on these dolphins. Get him with the chair! What a cool aquarium. I love all the different theming. I live right on the Atlantic Ocean on Canada's East Coast so it's fascinating to me how different the sealife is down there. The water is so much warmer. Some are the same though, like the sharks. 19:24 That is a much cheaper fortune teller than in New Orleans. Like 5 times cheaper and so much more interesting. I am sad that you did not walk the plank. 26:37 The captain sure could use a little sun. On the other hand, 31:11 is smoking hot. 31:52 You sure have been on that boat a long time. Breakfast time already.
Once again you did not disappoint. Your content is getting better each day. I’m loving this road trip. Definitely going to try making a Dr..Pepper milkshake at home. Thank you for letting us sit back and enjoy the ride. Stay safe.
Went to both the Lexington and the state aquarium the same day you shot this video, saw you were filming at the dolphin tank. Both of these places are well worth checking out. Keep up the good work.
Blue Angels are non-combat. 😉 24:18 You are not kidding. Most of the men on board could leap down this in one movement, sliding their hands along the rails, until they reached the next deck. "I'm shocked by the amount of dentistry going on, on this boat." 😆 I have Graphic Training Aid 44-2-6 (Aircraft Recognition Playing Cards)
@ 2:30 the "controls" are, starting with the big metal disc is the ship's wheel for turning the rudder. To the right is the ship's binnacle with the compass in it, and to the left, the device with the handles is the engine telegraph for communicating speed instructions to the engine room.
The sight of the barbershop on the Lex just reawakened some odd smell memory in my nose… that area of the ship along with the mess hall scene just… they smell like nothing else I’ve ever smelled anywhere. It’s just very distinct for me…
The hell hole at Conneaut Lake Park was the tride that spins and the floor drops and you're left stuck on the wall. So cool to see the devil still exists. The park is doomed to be a housing development. The new owners just torched the historic Blue Streak roller coaster.
I stayed aboard ship in high school, just prior to 9/11. They scared the freak out of us with ghost stories in the Forecastle...dudes banging chains in a metal room that echoes into eternity. We didn't sleep that night.

If memory serves, wasn't the Lexington called the Blue Ghost? Or was that an earlier model, so to speak? 🤔

I got to sleep on the Lexignton when I was a cub scout! They had overnight events for groups, and they had us be sailors for a day.
