I think the biggest issue people have with Ambrose Island is the visibility. The map is dark, VERY dark, and it leads to sometimes missing obvious things that are concealed by the darkness. I personally find it frustrating to run around dark maps, since I am bound to miss stuff and often just stay in instinct vision for a better visibility.
When I’m playing hitman I’m basically always using instinct, and I play on console so I have no way to fix the darkness issue other than to hold instinct
I fell in love with Ambrose Island the very moment I began playing it the first time. Superficially, it's beautiful, despite the recycled assets -- the color palette and nighttime setting provide a great mood for assassination, the glow of the torches lights up the jungle impressively, and there's so much detail in every area you can explore. Further, the terrain is so varied, from seaside areas, to the pirate camp, to the militia cave/ruins, to the village itself, the jungle, and everything in between. Also, there is so much to do in Ambrose Island: so many possibilities for infiltration, tons of potential attack vectors, assassination methods, "side quests" & secrets for additional achievements, all kinds of NPCs/interactions/disguises, etc. This is a fantastic map IMO -- you can enter this map empty-handed and still have so many opportunities available to confront and eliminate your targets. Much appreciation for the detailed analysis you provide in this video, WildGold. Hail the Emetic Gas Grenade!
Am I dumb because I seriously can't remember playing this stage in main campaign. Is this stage one of those online stages or something? How on earth have I not played this stage despite completing Hitman 3?
I think it definitely is the lack of mission stories, when I first played the game and was bad at it that made me not like the map, when my dad played the game the first time he had no idea how to play without mission stories, when I got good at the game I loved Ambrose island and I then taught my dad how to play the game better and now he also loves Ambrose island
If others are like me, the main reason Ambrose Island doesn’t get mentioned in "fave map" discussions is because relatovely few people have played it. I played TONS of Hitman, but then set it aside and didn’t play for a year or two. Recently, I decided to play and found that I had a new map to experience. I played it quite a lot, and really like it. I now save it til last when doing a freelancer campaign as I'm now incredibly familiar with the map and all it's little quirks, safe routes, target patterns etc.
Right after your video, I decided to jump into Ambrose's challenges. The first time I played the map at its release, I wasn't very enthusiast about the map but my journey on this map completely changed my mind. I found out challenges on this map, whether it's assassination, discover or exploits are very fun and none of them are repetitive or boring. Moreover, as you like (love) so much to talk about "freedom of approach", I have to say that Ambrose Island is a real contender on this point. When you take enough time to see the opportunities around you to climb a wall in the ruins, a window in the village, the many ways to go through Akka's military base.. all of it together makes me feel like a real hitman. And to be fair, that's unique. In many maps you feel like there is only one path to follow when it comes to SASO but not on Ambrose Island, you have so many possibilities and specially for the control unit. I want to talk about the control unit. First, I felt like the control unit was a pain is the ass but then I discovered that once again, you've got so many opportunities to take it down that it doesn't end like Whittleton Creek clues or the Virus on Sapienza, boring. Nevertheless, the map isn't perfect. There is not that "wooooow" effect when you first play it and I never really had that feeling. The map is pretty but she lacks of something. What ? I don't really know. If you ask me however, today, I would totally rank up Ambrose Island on my maps ranking and I would probably put it on the higher tier of the list. I definitely assume that being comfortable with the map helps a lot when you decide to play on, on freelancer. Thanks for reading, whoever reads me 💀
I really loved the amount of detail you put into this video: the top-down enlighted map of the island and its traspassing zones aka the 2 fortresses pirate den and mercenary ruins/caves are helping new players to plan routes - i am a veteran and i already knew these ways and there pro's and cons :) from story related perspective it is a very GREAT map!!! The easiest map maybe to get a silent assassin sniper rating (you just need to use body piercing sniper, shoot the button on the tower to call the meeting, get your first route in non-trespassing are to climb from ocean side up to the small ruin where you get the u-boat keys (i guess i took out the patrol and the stationary guard, but when the meeting takes place Aka sends them away - so you got a window not to get the bodys spottet) then you position yourself on the hill looking at your two targets facing each other for the 1 bullet-2-people-collateral snipe kill and run down to the u-boat to exit... thats maybe 4-5 minutes work! BUT here is my point why i don't tend to play this map: i play Freelancer a LOT and know almost all possible targets - to get all objectives i recommend avoid "hide target bodys", "no bodys found", "suit only" because in progress in the campaign the number of targets increase from 1 up to 4 and YOU named it - it's the LACK of CONTAINERS to hide... and if you are spottet even if you dont play Silent-Assassin-Style in Freelancer this time you visit Ambrose Island - you can be in trouble... if this area is alerted it can be a nightmare because civilian NPCs become ORANGE and panic and "infect" other NPCs and guards as well and if you have the objective "use only one disguise" you are basically screwed... hope you do your evil doings getting spottet in your suit... so NOW it's time for a change :) i don't like Mumbai either... or Bangkok... or obviously Colorado but who likes Colorado as Freelancer?!? Only for picking up weapons for your shelves back in Safehouse ^^ but when it comes to Ambrose i do understand your "love" for it - it's great but maybe for story only. Ciao the Fox
My biggest issue with Amberose Island is variety. Everything feels samey on the map, whether I am outside, inside or at the coast. My approach never changes, while on maps like Miami, Mumbai or Berlin my approach changes based on location or even which level I am on. I hope this makes some sense.
Idk about the map, but this video was an absolute BANGER. The break down of the map, every individual section, the map with the legend - everything is top quality. I know it probably took you a shit amount of time, but something similar to this for other maps sounds like an amazing idea... Good job man
thank you for the detailed map analysis! also, thank you for showing how to destroy the camera recorder without entering the security room! it really helps me!
I don't have a problem w/ Ambrose Island, but it kind of feels like an afterthought. Sandwiching it storywise between Whittleton Creek and Isle of Sgail is awkward. You could have made this the lead into what happens in Freelancer, with the Syndicates, which would have added an element of excitement to the mission.
This was such a great in-depth video and was very informative. Now I feel motivated to try this map again. I just notice that Orson is from Hitman 2 first mission i just noticed.

The lack of mission stories is a big problem. Following mission stories can let you get familiar with the map quickly. When I tried Ambrose Island for the first time, I had no idea where I should get started.
I've always preferred the brighter and nicer looking maps. The bank, Whittleton Creek, Miami and so on. They're just way more fun to replay for me. I would say Santa Fortuna and Haven Island are better versions of a similar map...

Honestly I'd love to see you break down different maps bit by bit showing off all the possibilities. I'm just a sucker for a maticolously constructed map. Maybe Mumbai could be a next on the chopping block?
I honestly wasn't that impressed with Ambrose Island. So was I with Mumbai. For some reason, I just prefer day maps, over night or dusk. I just tried out the time of day mod today, and it was a game changer. EVERY single map in the game could turn into day, so now lighting didn't matter. I loved them all, except romania with the train mission, the moving bright white snow in day light just didn't look good. And due to that mod, I actually had an even better time with Ambrose Island! I thought it was fun before, but now that is was lighted, it was like a free haven island!
My issue with the the map has nothing to do with the map. This might sound stupid but I had played hitman a ton so when this map came out I forced my self to not try to hard for an hour to experience it normally. But once the hour was up I did SaSo In 3 minutes and then completed all the challenges in like another hour. So I don't know if this map has a lot less content or I was just more efficient than when I played the other maps.
I think the problem with this map is just the setting isn't interesting enough at least for me. Pretty much every other map is more interesting in setting for me
You should make more videos looking at the map like this one. This video was super interesting and I’d like to see another video like it. Maybe you could try with a bonus mission or something The costume and stuff was cool, but I didn’t really enjoy and found it a bit cringy (sorry). It was ok for this video, but I wouldn’t want it to return. But your video your choice.
Off Topic, but has anyone else lost access to all their hitman maps, except training and Dubai escalation, after Hitman went off gamepass, even if you paid for the game? I made a ticket with IOI today but no response yet, and Xbox support just told me I no longer own the license. Reading the recent reviews on Xbox show others have this problem, but I haven't seen any discussion online. Any ideas what happened?
I play it rarely, because it's really nothing that can visually impress me in this map. It looks too simple. But mechanical it's one of the best maps in the whole game
Honestly, I so want some 'bonus missions' on some of the Hitman 3 maps. Stuff similar to what Hitman 1 had with missions like A House Built on Sand, The Icon, and Landslide. Missions where they alter the maps in some small or large way and often taking place during a different time of day from the main mission. Though some of Hitman 3's Escalation Contracts do make some drastic changes to the core maps and stand out as a result but I generally stay away from because I generally do not like playing Escalation Contracts unless they have something I really want. I also dislike the 'Special Assignment' missions in Hitman 2. They generally don't feel different enough from the main missions to feel at all interesting to do for repeat playthroughs.
There is a reason why the map is what it is, and it comes down to space on a DVD that can fit on an Xbox/PS4, as for Hitman 3, IOI was stretching the game by reusing as much assets as possible to stay under 25 GBs while also have missions from 1 and 2 included in the 3rd game. If you know about this fact, you understand why you see the same face of guards in Paris, Isle of Sgail and on Ambrose island, with same voice actors, it's because they ran out of space for the consoles. For PC, this would not have been a problem as most people played a digital release on Steam or Epic, so they could have made it more beefy and PC players would still be able to play it. In Hitman 1, the only extra missions we received was the bonus missions set in the same maps as the original campaign, plus the patient zero DLC, a fairly easy implementation. In H2, the extra missions we got were Haven island and New York (plus the water bottle campaign), and those missions at least looked unique enough to be considered not totally re-used assets. And then comes H3 with a linear final mission on a train, and Ambrose re-used assets map that wasn't really up to standard like the other maps, and the only DLC they released was 7 deadly sins and the free Freelancer update with deluxe bling items. For me personally, I didn't like the jungle maps in the first original Hitman 47, I didn't like Santa Fortuna or Ambrose island for the same reason. 47 is a well dressed assassin that can blend in in urban environments, he looks like any other office paper pusher or limousine driver. Almost every NPC in Ambrose island is a person of color (except for the mercenaries), he doesn't blend in but rather stick out like sour thumb. The theme of the island is that it's a haven for pirates, but pirates are brutal in real life and if they sniff a white bald assassin walking around on their turf they would man hunt through the jungle to find him. The problem with Ambrose island was the re-use of assets limitation of the file size of the discs. It didn't feel like patient zero, or the water bottle extra missions or haven or new york, it just felt like: thank you for playing our game, here is a rushed shitty map with nothing new and nothing interesting. As you said, there are no mission stories like the other maps in the trilogy, so it is a sandbox do what you want-type of mission, and the mastery wasn't much to celebrate since they nerfed the molotov that people were misusing in speedruns. When I play freelancer I use the map remover mod and gladly turn off: Santa Fortuna, Isle of Sgail, Mumbai, Ambrose and Colorado. The first one is boring and repetitive in the fortress part, Ark society is unoptimized and NPCs will lag when walking even when it's not a showdown mission, Mumbai has NPCs everywhere that call the police as soon as they see you through a crack, Colorado is a shitshow for Freelancer and generally hated by the community and Ambrose is not fun enough to validate it as a standard map in the rotation. Seeing as the Hitman trilogy is a homage to the earlier games, they could have picked Russia, Malaysia, Austria, Chile, Hungary or a completely new country, even USA would have been fine as a majority of missions in Blood Money was set in the states, plus the Absolution game. Your video explained a lot about the different opportunities and paths that are somewhat easy on the island, but unironically it was things I already knew from my very short and few playthroughs of the map. I will not play it, even to unlock the mastery levels, it's just a boring map and it shows.
Berlin is a popular favorite map? Damn im out of the loop, i have played that level maybe 2 or 3 times at all, i utterly despise it loool For me its Hookaido, i really fell in love with this game when playing it for the first few times and suddenly had no loadout and no idea where to start. then New York and Mendoza
Ambrose took the worst parts of all the maps and combined it. Trash tier jungle? Yes. Atrocious buildings from Mumbai? For sure. Shit ton of guards in the same place that makes every mistake a kill everyone challenge like Colorado? We have that.
One HUGE issue with Ambrose Island is the fact that there are no escalations or any additional content. For me once I beat a level I play all the escalations. This lets me learn everything about the map which allows me to enjoy it better as I feel like a true hitman. But without escalations? I have no reason to play the map again after the first few. So I don’t play it.
I may be alone here, but I almost feel like the escalations are kind of a "how to play this game" tutorial in reverse. I learned a lot more about each map and NPC movements playing the escalations, probably because they forced me to.
However, the video is super great and it can be really helpful to have similar video for other map. The Crimson Games channel is a great additional source of info for map knowledge. There is this hitman youtuber: www.youtube.com/@crimsongameshitman With this playlist of video: ua-cam.com/play/PLmUMHFrA522Hczisjsr-X5mcdOvuZlI6Q.html&si=FzONYfgCrOwpIPnA
the map is a dark, boring, mission storyless maze with out that many opportunity's climb. ive barely ever played it for this reason also having no mission storys really ruins casual play, sure you do have heaps of ways to kill them but you really need a good eye to find most of them
The developers definitely love cocaine, and I actually think that they pulled off coke being in a game very unsuspecting and super chill, even when pat down and carrying what looks like to be about 4.4-6.7lbs just raw bricks ALL around a couple maps, coca plants we hide in, some really accurate production sites I mean tbh if you didn’t know what it looks like being produced by playing this game it would probably go over most players heads besides the Rando slabs you can grab around.
Ambrose Island is the reason I love playing hitman now. I played through the whole game, and while it was fun, it wasn’t enjoyable enough for me to replay all the maps over and over again. I’m not sure what it was about ambrose island, but I loved playing it. It was the first map where I reached max mastery, after that I started playing all the maps over and over realizing how enjoyable the game actually is.
When I unoinstalled the trilogy after 400h, this map didn't exist. They really expect to come back to their game each time they release something ? Where does it go in the story ? BTW the Story of hitman very good, the 8 games
Personally, I always prefer larger maps with much larger enemy bases but many more styles of approach. It really lets me be creative. I never really found this in Ambrose Island. To be fair though, I'm only level 730 and have not got 100% completion on ANY maps yet so I don't know if I can talk. Maybe my view will change as I play more but Hitman WOA came off gamepass on Xbox! 😢
@@oliverly I have about 528 hours on WOA alone and I don't play any other hitman games. If you haven't already, increase your mastery to 20 on all levels, try all SA, SO SASO and SNA on all levels and do freelancer. Levels aren't that important though. Fun is the only important part.
I appreciate it, and I'd rather have it than not. Doesn't mean I HAVE to like it though. It's my least favorite map. I even like the 2nd training map more lol
@@jimmypeeps8471 Same for me aswell. I'm just not interested in the setting/ location. Doesn't mean it's a bad map, just depends on personal preference really.
Uh…free doesn’t mean it’s free from being critiqued. Especially true when it comes to Freelancer and its buggy nature. I appreciate the effort, it’s still one of my least favorite maps.
I completed Ambrose Island to level 30 when it came out. And honestly, it was pretty good. A little dark, but the more I tinkered around with it I learned to exploit the map more and complete the mission in different ways. I think the lack of formal mission stories gave me more incentive to think outside the box, google how to tinker with the different achievements. Plus the vibes give me a mix of Mumbai with Haven and made darker. I say 8/10. Not perfect, but enjoyable.
To be fair, IOI always had an inspiration from the maps they made before when making a new one. Mendoza feels like a hybrid between Vintage year and Requiem, Berlin is similair to Codename 47 Rotterdam missions, Chongqing is similair to Hitman contracts missions, Dubai has some inspiration from house of cards etc. Many of these levels have been influenced by older games.
Ambrose is a goated map, I think the lack of Mission Stories does bring it down a bit in my opinion tho but considering it was a free map it was definitely worth grinding out for the 100% completion
That costume is god tier

Yo, there needs to be more of this type of videos. Super interesting to see the game desgin from this top down perspective! Do more maps! Great job!
Yes, Dartmoor inside the mansion is like this too.

Turn up your gamma correction, adjust your HDR settings and/or grab a Reshade preset if you're on PC.
just use *time of day* mod
When I’m playing hitman I’m basically always using instinct, and I play on console so I have no way to fix the darkness issue other than to hold instinct

Love the new costume addition of your video's, keep it up and I wish you the best.
My issue with the the map has nothing to do with the map. This might sound stupid but I had played hitman a ton so when this map came out I forced my self to not try to hard for an hour to experience it normally. But once the hour was up I did SaSo In 3 minutes and then completed all the challenges in like another hour. So I don't know if this map has a lot less content or I was just more efficient than when I played the other maps.
you've made so much progress since 2022 so congrats and keep doing what you're doing you are my favorite Hitman UA-camr
I do not play Ambrose Island much because its side objective significantly increases my run play time.
6:16 What is the 5th way to get in the camp ?
I would say oder the ladder in the Toilet in the top right corner
@@bennibreaktionen1333yes probably, thanks
BROOOO UR VIDEOS ARE ACTUALLY WILD COMEDY GOLDDDD
I think the problem with this map is just the setting isn't interesting enough at least for me. Pretty much every other map is more interesting in setting for me
You should make more videos looking at the map like this one. This video was super interesting and I’d like to see another video like it. Maybe you could try with a bonus mission or something
The costume and stuff was cool, but I didn’t really enjoy and found it a bit cringy (sorry). It was ok for this video, but I wouldn’t want it to return. But your video your choice.
Yeah I really enjoyed it too, great map!
That costume is gold 😍 and your hand too... *cough cough* 🙂
Its too damn dark without the time of day mod
Men make progres from 2023
This is basically a better 100% completion of Ambrose island, I’m gonna play it rn
Love your vids ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I will not play it, even to unlock the mastery levels, it's just a boring map and it shows.
thank you for letting me know that there's a mod that removes map for freelancer!
Berlin is a popular favorite map?
Damn im out of the loop, i have played that level maybe 2 or 3 times at all, i utterly despise it loool
For me its Hookaido, i really fell in love with this game when playing it for the first few times and suddenly had no loadout and no idea where to start.
then New York and Mendoza
Your videos are great❤
There are just WAY too many invisible boundaries. It annoys me. I also don't like the setting much.
I don't know if it's only me, but in both facecam videos I have a weird filling that your body movement isn't synchronised with your voice sometime
However, the video is super great and it can be really helpful to have similar video for other map.
The Crimson Games channel is a great additional source of info for map knowledge.
There is this hitman youtuber: www.youtube.com/@crimsongameshitman

Since playing this map with the time of day mod and playing it during sunset, I really enjoy it a lot more
Anyone have a fix for bad lag?
Eye reveal
Great video👍
I really love this vid, There was a big step up !
good timing. I was playing ambrose island when this video dropped lol😅
the map is a dark, boring, mission storyless maze with out that many opportunity's climb. ive barely ever played it for this reason also having no mission storys really ruins casual play, sure you do have heaps of ways to kill them but you really need a good eye to find most of them
Ambrose Island is a god tier map, made possible by all the lessons IOI learned coming so far.
Is this going to be the new format? Because I'm digging it!
Finally someone else who likes Ambrose Island. I always try to save this map for last in a Freelancer campaign
Yeah agreed with the conclusion. Lets let Rockstar games keep making island maps, other companies are just not that good with it 😂
Wait that actually existed?
Ambrose Island is the reason I love playing hitman now. I played through the whole game, and while it was fun, it wasn’t enjoyable enough for me to replay all the maps over and over again. I’m not sure what it was about ambrose island, but I loved playing it. It was the first map where I reached max mastery, after that I started playing all the maps over and over realizing how enjoyable the game actually is.
When I unoinstalled the trilogy after 400h, this map didn't exist. They really expect to come back to their game each time they release something ? Where does it go in the story ? BTW the Story of hitman very good, the 8 games
betweeh Another Life and The Ark Society
Personally, I always prefer larger maps with much larger enemy bases but many more styles of approach. It really lets me be creative. I never really found this in Ambrose Island. To be fair though, I'm only level 730 and have not got 100% completion on ANY maps yet so I don't know if I can talk. Maybe my view will change as I play more but Hitman WOA came off gamepass on Xbox! 😢
Only level 730😭😭😭😭
@@oliverly Just look at WildGold's level and you'll stop thinking about mine. He's like level 1880 or something. It's mad.
@@LordOrbitus im only level 330 and i have like 250 combined hours from hitman 2 + hitman WOA
@@oliverly I have about 528 hours on WOA alone and I don't play any other hitman games. If you haven't already, increase your mastery to 20 on all levels, try all SA, SO SASO and SNA on all levels and do freelancer. Levels aren't that important though. Fun is the only important part.
man this map came FOR FREE out of nowhere while the devs were working on 007 but people cant be grateful for once and appreciate it
I appreciate it, and I'd rather have it than not.
Are ya ready kids
I completed Ambrose Island to level 30 when it came out. And honestly, it was pretty good. A little dark, but the more I tinkered around with it I learned to exploit the map more and complete the mission in different ways. I think the lack of formal mission stories gave me more incentive to think outside the box, google how to tinker with the different achievements. Plus the vibes give me a mix of Mumbai with Haven and made darker. I say 8/10. Not perfect, but enjoyable.
It’s my fav map
I avoided Ambrose Island when it first dropped, but it started growing on me once I figured out a SASO method by myself with no guides.
...oh and there are the odd daytime version of Ambrose that appear in Freelancer and other modes sometimes
Many of these levels have been influenced by older games.
this feels like a swat mission planning ngl but thats a good thing btw
That pirate outfit tho.... 🔥 🔥 🔥
Ambrose is a goated map, I think the lack of Mission Stories does bring it down a bit in my opinion tho but considering it was a free map it was definitely worth grinding out for the 100% completion
