Great job. They had the Mayfield area pegged an hour ahead of time. Also Grant explained the family tornado vs one long tracked tornado before other broadcasts that I have watched. Nice work.

At 201:33, he mentions the best-case scenerio and the worst-case scenerio. The former, as he describes, is what the NWS Birmingham tries too hard to eliminate. They seem to only side on keeping down the False Alarm Ratio down, and which results in less lead time warning (especially for weaker tornadoes, which this wasn't).

This officiallly was a tornado family, the first long tracked EF4 hit in Arkansas and West Tennessee and stayed on the ground for 100+ miles, and then the second longer tracked EF4 tornado hit Mayfield and parts of Western Kentucky, and the tornado stayed on the ground for nearly 200 miles.. tornado families are nothing to fool around and play with when it comes to favorable unstable air mass being juicy and convective enough to make thunderstorms blow up.. it exploded in Arkansas, Tennessee, and Kentucky

  • @ARichardP

At least one hour before it hit Mayfield, they were talking about a direct hit on Mayfield and said with the history of this intense tornado staying on the ground for over 100 miles at that point and with unusually favorable conditions there was no reason to believe it would not continue and strike Mayfield. With that much warning, and dozens of mentions of a huge debris ball showing on sophisticated radar, I’d have gotten the the hell out of there, unless I had an underground shelter or at least a basement. Yes, there was the possibility of tornadoes elsewhere, so you couldn’t be sure you’d be out of the way, but if you stayed in Mayfield without an underground place to go, you were like a sitting duck. They must have had a tornado shelter in Mayfield (pop. 10,017) and some people probably went there. Really need to take these kinds of storms seriously, even in December.

I agree and they should not be afraid to say looks like an F4. People have to know this because there is no surviving unless you're underground or in a shelter built to withstand it. As I said in Oklahoma City in 2013 Moore, get underground or get out of the way. An interior closet just isn't going to cut it. Realizing you can't say this all the time and cause panic but this was one case I think they should have told them just to get the hell out of the way if they can't get underground.

@@GR-bn3xj reading that comment above made me think of Moore and that tornado and what Mike I believe was the one that said get out of town and I would have got out of town too except that they got bottlenecked on the highways which made them sitting ducks. That was the only thing that concerned me there. I would have taking side roads forget the highway just get the hell out of the way and that's what he said Just get the hell out of the way and anything above ground would not survive

@@catlover6930 yes he was the one and I heard since he got some flack for it. But I appreciated the honest coverage..if my family was in the path of an F4 or F5 then I would them the same thing, as long as there was time. You most likely won't survive in an interior closet or hallway. I'll take my chances on the road with a head start and directions. I realize it could clog the roads but 1 Mile away can be the difference between life and death. I wish more weather people had the balls to say what he said

Many many people voiced their opinion and credited their lives Mike said leave.

@@catlover6930 I feel blessed bc where in live in Alabama we have 2 or 3 good metrologist when tornados come around. But I also envy having the team in Oklahoma City, bc as good as ours are, watching all the coverage I have, it isn't as good as what they do out there. We have no helicopters, and rarely capture a tornado live. It was happened, and I realize the terrain is very different. Our guys do an incredible job but Mike and the other station do an amazing job.
We had an F4 a couple of years ago in Lee county close to me, and when they realized what they were seeing, the meteorologist changed his tone and words, saving lives. I always appreciate seeing that on screen and knowing when it's a maybe and when it's not time to screw around

I agree completely. Dude was talking about a severe F4 tornado at the 1:36:00ish Mark and she interrupts him saying she wanted to talk about severe thunderstorm warning somewhere else. It's like she couldn't stand not being the center of attention or she had no ability to see what the major storm was. When that debris ball popped up you focus your attention on, that you don't go to thunderstorm warning.

    • @ARichardP
      @ARichardP 2 роки тому +4

Takes way too long to give the information about the severe thunderstorm warning. It’s not nearly as important at that moment as the tornado. Could have said it in under 30 seconds. I think they should have been using a stronger word than “significant” to describe this tornado. They could see the debris ball was huge and had been for a long time. I know they don’t want to hype things like they often do on The Weather Channel but this was a situation where words like “catastrophic damage” was no hype.

Trying to outrun a tornado is an absolutely terrible idea. With this tornado traveling up to 60mph, you could easily get caught on worse roads or get caught in stalled traffic with people trying to do the same, putting you directly in the path with nowhere to go.
And they kind of have to cover the other storms otherwise they'll receive complaints from viewers, as dumb as that may sound. They're doing what they're supposed to

KFVS covers 5 states and the entire viewing area was being affected. They had a lot of warnings to cover.
And just to amplify the other commenters, do not try to drive away from a tornado. If everyone else in town gets the same idea, you could be in a traffic jam when the tornado hits.

    • @Marios_WX

yeah no, telling people to get out just clogs up highways and puts people in a way more dangerous position. Take lessons from Mike Morgan and his antics on May 31st, 2013. In which he told people to get out of El Reno and caused the interstate and state highways to clog up, causing people to become sitting ducks.
This was also an extremely volatile atmosphere, in which any storm could easily drop a violent tornado. They did their best, saying they're the most pitiful is sad. Especially given there's stations in which will entirely ignore warnings for "pretty storms on radar."

When you listen to Oklahoma City meteorologist you hear a difference. When an ef4 or EF5 hits they will say to get underground or get out of the way. That comes from experience. Listen to the 1999 Moore tornado and the 2013 coverage and listen to the lessons they learned. Once you get into a high-end ef4 or EF5 there is no surviving unless you are underground or have a tornado shelter, which most of these places don't have in Kentucky. Most weather men or women are scared to use terms they should, because it takes some balls to say get out of the way because of the thinking of the other commoners. While it's true you don't want to be in your car and that's the last place you want to be during a tornado, if there is time and that's the key, getting out of the way is the best thing you can do if an ef4 or 5 is coming your way. There was ample time to warn in Mayfield to do this. Yes it may have clogged the roads some but if I had a loved one in Mayfield and I was watching this then I would tell them to go out of the way as long as they left in time. In 1999 the weatherman in Oklahoma City offered prayers and the standard advice like this and many people died. They also told them to get under underpasses which is a no no now. You learn from experience and I would bet the next time an ef4 comes rolling through you may hear more meteorologist in this area telling people to get out of the way. You can stay in your interior closet during an ef4 but my butt is getting on the road if I have time to get out.
