    Today's "Art of War" by Sun Tzu was completely re-organized and edited by Cao Cao, who retained the principles that endured the test of time, but got rid of parts of it that had become obsolete by his time.

      @@codybonds The scholarly source is in Chinese...Cao Cao edited the Art of War and also wrote a commentary on it. You can get a summary on wikipedia Sun Tzu Art of War....
      If you have read Sun Bin's (His descendent) Art of War, you'll see that it had many tactical advice relevant to the Warring States period, how to deploy archers and infantry etc...but Sun Tzu's Art of War, breaking with traditions of the time, was uniquely devoid of tactical advice, thus making it relevant even today...Chinese scholars believe it's because Cao Cao had edited it several hundred years later, and edited out obsolete tactical advice (such as pertaining to the use chariots, of set battle formations and so on), so leaving behind only the broad principles of strategy.
      The Art of War as we know it today are 13 Chapters long but there are 5 more chapters attributed to Sun Tzu that were only discovered in 1970s in a Han Dynasty Tomb...So it seems today's Sun Tzu Art of War isn't the original version.

    You forgot to mentioned the grainery officer actually agreed to let Cao Cao cut off his head in exchange of Cao Cao raise his family. (I know. It was a different time). In which Cao Cao kept to his word. Even the Romance of 3 kingdoms who portraited Cao Cao as the villain admitted this fact.

    Liu Bei's Shu Han kingdom was only formed after he enlisted the legendary strategist Zhuge Liang who envisioned him to form a Western based kingdom and ally with Wu kingdom (Sun Quan) to fight Wei kingdom (Cao Cao). Before that, Liu Bei was basically on the run everytime from Cao Cao and was serving multiple independent lords. Only with the brilliance of Zhuge Liang did he finally manage to outsmart Cao Cao's forces time and time again. And with the strategies, tactics and valour of all serving under Liu Bei and Sun Quan did they manage to destroy Cao Cao's huge naval invasion force at the Red Cliffs which was one of the major turning points in the history of the three kingdoms. After that battle, Liu Bei went on to take the southern provinces of Jingzhou and finally took the Western provinces to form Shu Han and thereby fulfilling the Three Kingdoms. How the Three Kingdoms eventually fell is another long entry in the historical texts and romanticised novel.

  • @SleepingDrag0n
    @SleepingDrag0n 6 років тому +22

    Two historical events that demonstrated Cao Cao's cruelty was no fabrication. First was the civilian massacre of Xu province. His father was murdered by an ex-bandit subordinate of the warlord of Xu province, so he attacked Xu province in revenge. He killed all the civilians in the villages and cities he conquered, to "avenge" his father. While some argue he really did it to intimidate the opposing warlord into submission, or to scare the people of Xu province into turning on their own warlord whom Cao Cao's aggression was primarily aimed towards, it was an act of extreme cruelty none the less.
    Second was executing the PoWs after battle of Guandu. Cao Cao's forces were already short on supplies during the battle. He managed to attacked Yuan Shao's supply depot at Wuchao and burned it to the ground, which led to the rapid defeat of Yuan Shao's much larger force. 70,000 of Yuan Shao's troops surrendered or were captured as the result, a number that more or less matched Cao Cao's own forces. But since Cao Cao had barely the food to feed his own troops let alone these PoWs, so he had them all executed. There is reason behind his actions other than cruelty, but to slaughter 70,000 of his countrymen instead of freeing them just because they once fought for his childhood friend and now enemy, shows that he has a heart as cold as stone.

    • @codybonds
      @codybonds  6 років тому +6

      The first I knew but the second I didn't. I feel it wasn't just revenge. Most likely those soldiers were honor bound to fight against him, and if released stood a strong chance of returning to the enemy army. Most sources I have read talk about soldiers and civilians as expendable on the eyes of the generals of the day.

      Oaths were very serious business during those times it's a given that those soldiers would rejoin Yuan Shao if cao cao spared thwm, as for the other thing I don't buy that it was just mindless revenge, cao cao was probably the most rational general in the three kingdoms I won't be surprised if he simply used the death of his father as an excuse to attack Xu and achieve an ulterior motive

Despite the poor portrait of him in the Romance of Three Kingdoms, he actually had never betrayed his Emperor of the Han dynasty during his life time. He had already enough power to make himself emperor long before the battle of Redcliff, but he still kept Han Emperor in his rightful place. It's actually Liu Bei who claimed to re-establish power of the house of Liu decleared himself emperor while the real Han Emperor is still alive on the throne.

      there is no proof that Liu Bei wasnt the member of the imperial clan. In the Records, no one had doubted his identity of imperial clan member. Therefore it can be believed that he is a member of imperial clan.
      Cao Cao did lots of thing which disrespect and disloyal to Han. It is absurd to say that " dedicated his life to Han"

    • @vietimports
      @vietimports 6 років тому +3

      You people do realize this is 200 ad, any asshole could claim to be a member of the imperial clan through some obscure familial tie. It’s not like they had dna testing. This happened all throughout history, some guy shows up from out of the woods literally and claims to be a kings long lost son

    • @Lyserus
      @Lyserus 6 років тому +8

      vietimports You do realize when 200AD your ancestors are probably barbarians and don't have history record. China isn't like that. The line of royal blood is precisely recorded in China during its dynasty. Cao Cao might not be a villan but sure as hell was not “dedicated to Han dynasty” (In his early days maybe, but after that nope)

    • @qq6531
      @qq6531 6 років тому +6

      Actually, it is not Liu Bei who claim himself as a member of the imperial clan, at least not in the record. In the records of the three kingdoms, Liu Bei himself never claimed himself as a member of the imperial clan. It is Chen Shao, the writer who said that Liu Bei' ancestor is Liu Sheng

    It needs to be said that many thinkers at the time who actually cared about the people's plight more than they did about Confucius and his teachings supported Cao Cao. Great example: Zhang Zhao, tutor and chief adviser to Sun Quan. Before the Battle of Red Cliffs, he strongly urged his master to reconsider and surrender to Cao Cao, until Sun Quan slashed his table apart in rage and told that whoever tells him to surrender would be next. Zhang Zhao had no love for Cao Cao. He saw him as the most natural candidate for unifying China and putting a stop to the bloody warfare that turned the lives of the people into hell. Indeed, Wei/Jin did inevitably unite China, but how many lives were sacrificed until this was achieved? Zhang Zhao saw that, but Sun Quan was too prideful.

    Cao Cao (Cao Meng De) was the greatest hero which the mainstream historians had said he was a evil cunning warlord. I say he was the hero. All his lands he ruled, there was no famine and no drought. No civilians died from hunger and also no bandits terrorise his lands. He gave his people public law and order, with one objective in his mind, to stop all wars with the warlords and bring total peace to the Middle Kingdom.

    “I would rather betray others than others betray me.”“寧教我負天下人 休教天下人負我”
    It can be two meanings.First one it's like if someone need to betray others,for living it will be me.And the second is pretty different,it's like if someone need to be the bad guy be spurned by everyone,than let me be that guy. So it's pretty hard to tell is Cao Cao(曹操) a bad guy or good guy. He may have the charismatic leadership to become a new emperor,but probably not a hero.

    • @codybonds
      @codybonds  6 років тому +1

    • @smpss960471
      @smpss960471 6 років тому

      Cody Bonds Yeah,it's more correct than "betray others"."Betray the world" actually we don't use the word "world",we say "天下" it's translate the word is "under the sky" ,It's sound more ambitious than "world" in Mandarin. But "天下" we actually mean all part of china's territory or like the place china can reach. Hold china again we will say take over “天下”,so "others(天下人)"can be translate to "all people under the sky or all population of china".

    • @Kristaliorn
      @Kristaliorn 6 років тому +1

      I was really hoping you would say that. I think you have it on the head. Their is just no replayability or anything that keeps you going. I can't get attached to the characters as the progression is flat with no traits and perks like Warhammer. It need quest battles and more narrative. As well as the building progression being totally flawed. As it was literally a colour matching process. I was soo hyped for it. It really let me down. Going to try not to.preorder from now on. It's great that you are impartial and can not only make videos like this pretty much sellinga gae to me through engagement in the history or mechanics etc. But it's also criticise the total war franchise in a constructive manner. As with legend of total war now being less active in total war and Darren totalwar from republic of play not being as out spoken about it we need someone like you with a passion for the games and the style and the history who wants to give this constructive feedback ans this help drive the games on positively through engagement with the fans etc. I've went on a little. But cheers again and keep making your videos the way you do. I totally understand the time problem. When I get a chance it's just the Warhammer for me of ever. I miss the historical part but because the narrative and engagement in characters is so high I feel you make your own history and can role play really well!
      This was lacking in TOB. I enjoyed it also most acchieveing a short victory!
      Cheers

    • @lngngyn
      @lngngyn 6 років тому +1

      +Spicy Chicken Guó (国/國) refers to a political state/country/nation. Sānguó (三國) is the official translation for the era. The Three Kingdoms were technically never controlled by a king/wáng (王). I don't think they ever called themselves king because that's an old school title. They called themselves dukes or lords and then eventually claimed to be emperors. The translation of kingdom doesn't necessarily refer to a state owned by a king.
      I think it's translated to Three Kingdoms because the empire at the time was fractured into three states, and a kingdom is a generally a state smaller than an empire. Plus Three Kingdoms sounds cooler than Three States.

    As for Cao himself, he reminds me of a famous saying in Chinese - 一将功成,万骨枯. Can be transliterated as - for one general to succeed, many bones must pave the way. A ruthless warlord who will trade human lives for his own glory.

    Thanks for the right pronunciation.
    In China , most people like Liu Bei's faction more than other factions, because he's mercy, according to the Three Kingdoms Romanced.
    Japanese some how like Cao Cao more. Maybe because he's a powerful leader.
