You're the only booktuber whos videos I actually watch the entire thing instead of skipping/skimming, the way you talk about the books you read just makes me very intrigued and puts a smile on my face, the passion and the light in your eyes is truly something. Much love bro, also you gotta get on The Dandelion Dynasty train.
you actually hyped me up for sun eater so much😭😭😭 also, can i just say, it's so refreshing to hear that 60 books was your goal for the year (which is similar to mine). i think a lot of booktubers out there are reading soooo much and I feel like I could never read in that volume, it's setting impossible standards for me kinda. and it's great to hear that this is a valid goal, and you don't have to be able to read 100+ books a year to be considered a reader, idk if this makes sense lol
I’m not sure if I’ve ever left a comment on a UA-cam video but I felt compelled to tell you that your recs got me out of a GIANT reading slump this year and back into reading fantasy. The momentum from reading these books (which I now cannot shut up about) helped me find books in other genres that I liked and finished too so THANK YOU. @@Smitty1423 definitely! 💯 Here’s my review: Brutal, truthful, and raw. Ocean Vuong’s iconic poetic prose was so luscious and vivid that you deeply feel all the pain and beauty in this impactful multi-generational American story. I listened to this on audiobook and found it weirdly entrancing because of the beautiful poetic delivery hard juxtaposed with deeply unsettling emotionally charged vignettes ranging from the Vietnam war, Tiger Woods, Love & Death. I listened to the 6-8 hour audiobook in two sittings, it was so engrossing.

You have a great monthly list. Here is mine. Jan-Elder Race by Adrian Tchaikovsky Feb-Malice by John Gwynne Mar-The Wisdom of Crowds by Joe Abercrombie Apr-Fool’s Fate by Robin Hobb May-Changes by Jim Butcher Jun-Lonesome Dove by Larry McMurtry Jul-Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes Aug-The Wall of Storms by Ken Liu Sep-Demon in White by Christopher Ruocchio Oct-The Prisoner of Heaven by Carlos Ruiz Zafon Nov-In Ascension by Martin MacInnes Dec-just 17% in, but it’s Wind and Truth by Brandon Sanderson
Wow such a great year of reading!! Loved hearing about your top books, we definitely have some in common as you will see, haha. Loved Legendborn, and can’t wait to read Wind and Truth as soon as I finish Rhythm of War! My top books from 2024 are as follows: January: Tress of the Emerald Sea February: The Hate U Give March: Six of Crows April: The Way of Kings May: Funny Story June: so hard (three 5 stars!!) Words of Radiance 😂 July: The Things We Cannot Say August: Remarkably Bright Creatures September: The God of the Woods October: Beartown November: hmm… enjoyment level? Butcher and Blackbird. Quality? O Caledonia December: Two Twisted Crowns? Only finished 2 books so far so not sure yet!
Jan - Midnight Library. I read Poppy War this month as well and I agree with you. I think the audiobook does the book a disservice. I actually did not like the entire trilogy and I think that was partially influenced by the way Rin was portrayed by the narrator. If you go back to it, definitely read it. I'd be interested what you think, but the 3rd book is my lowest rated book of all time and I should've just DNF'd it Feb - Read 4 books and none were good enough for this list Mar - Harry Potter - Prisoner of Azkaban. First time reading through HP and loved this one Apr - The Lost Metal. Rhythm of War was a close 2nd May - Shadow of the Gods. Read 7 books this month so a bit tough June - Dungeon Crawler Carl July - The Will of the Many Aug - Tress of the Emerald Sea Sep - The Nightingale Oct - Scythe Nov - Blood Over Bright Haven. This was my highest quality book month so hard choice but it wins.
Thank you for being honest about red rising, I also thought that it was just okay 🤷♂️. But I’ll give the second a chance cause you thought it got better
My personal reading goal was 40 books, and I just finished book 41...so just made it Jan - A Memory of Light (#14 in Wheel of Time Series) Feb - The Subtle Knife (#2 in His Dark Materials) Mar - Not a great month but the best was Breach of Peace and Rebel's Creed by UA-camr Daniel Green Apr - The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue May - Dark Matter Jun - Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell Jul - GREAT MONTH, but I can't decide between Tainted Cup and Vanished Birds Aug - Project Hail Mary Sep - Read the Mistborn Trilogy this month my fav was Hero of Ages Oct - Best Served Cold just nudges out Hyperion Nov - I liked Dreams of the Dying slightly more the The Lies of Locke LaMora Dec - Gonna be a tough one just finished The Fifth Season and I loved it (starting The Obelisk Gate today) but I really really loved Dragon Mage as well...sooooo to be cont.
@@Smitty1423 Next year I plan to tackle more series (In 2024, I read mostly stand-alones, with a few series sprinkled in, I want to reverse that in 2025). I want to finally get into Sun Eater (if book 7 comes out), Stormlight Archives, Lightbringer, Red Rising, Mistborn 2, and a few more completed series.
Man, you are not wrong about Kingdoms of Death. I'm listening to it right now and I just got to the....banquet scene in Chapter 34. Man. Man. This is my favorite Sun Eater yet but at the same time, I feel like Christopher Ruocchio has personally scarred me
January - Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis. Its his take on pulpy old school sci fi, so so fun and thought provoking. 4.5 stars February - I only reread books this month, so probably Drawing of the Three by Stephen King. 2nd book of the Dark Tower series, where it truly comes to life. 5 stars. March - 11/22/63 by Stephen King. This one was a beautiful slow burn that will make you rethink your preconception of Stephen King. 5 stars April - Duma Key. Ok ok I know this is a lot of Stephen King, but he has some total bangers. This one is best read without knowing much, but there's some hauntingly beautiful magical realism. 4.5 stars at least May - That Hideous Strength by C.S. Lewis. The conclusion of his Sci Fi trilogy, things get absolutely bonkers. Thought provoking dystopian that explores past WWII anxieties, as well as Merlin and the descent of the gods on earth. 5 stars. June - The Road by Cormac McCarthy - totally haunting depressing, dreary and sad. But so beautiful, and with a little bit of hope. 5 stars July - The Shining by Stephen King - There's not much to say on this one. You know the story. 4 stars August - American Gods by Neil Gaiman - Fascinating exploration on what America puts its faith in, with a unique perspective from an Englishman. I know Gaiman seems like a scumbag right now, but he sure can write. 4 stars September - Golden Son. Freaking awesome. What else can I say. 4.5 stars October - The Green Mile by Stephen King. There's no way you don't this story. Like 11.22.63, it challengers your idea of what Stephen King can be, and will make you sob for days. 4.5 stars. November - Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace - It took me roughly three months to finish this (I finished at least 10 books while reading it) but the last 600 pages or so I read in a week and half. This book is a monster, and has a pretty pretension reputation (which isn't not earned lol) but it seriously has to be one of the best books of the 20th century. Wallace was one of the most talented writers of his generation and in this book he said everything there is to say about everything. Easiest 5 star of the year. December - ??? Let's face it, it'll probably be Wind and Truth. I'm about 700 pages into it and it is excellent so far. Thanks for the vid, happy reading!
I really love the Dungeon Crawler Carl series. Never read anything quite like that combo of balls-to-the-wall insanity and emotional gut punches. Hope you get to read more of the series!
Don't even worry about "spooky season." You can read horror anytime you want. If you are into other books in October just read them. Great video, as always.
I really want to sink my teeth into fantasy. I’m worried about extensive world building and maps on pages but I’m keen on getting into it on that level! Any recommendations for a newbie? Preferably not too many books in a series. Go easy on my pocket please 😅
Hi Smitty!!! I absolutely lover your recs, I found some of the best books because of you and I think we share similar tastes. However, I really freaking hated Dune (movies and the books) but I loved sun eater, so I was just curious: Dune or sun eater, which is your favorite?
@@Smitty1423 “Cold Storage” by David Koepp. I got it because my brother and I used to live in an old building named Cold Storage and it was a crazy place. This book was nothing like it but still fun to bond over. It’s a sci-fi/horror about a fungus. I gave it a 4 star and it was a fun quick read.
I’m in a dilemma Smitty. I just received books in the mail and I need to know which to start first. The Rage of Dragons or starting up my first Sanderson read with The Final Empire
FINALLY someone speaking truth about Name of the wind. Dead slow paced mess that never picks up or touches down with a villain satisfyingly. Engless side quests. Inconsistent power scaling. Writing skill cant mask the content for me. Biggest killer was having all this hype around the past deeds of the MC, only to find out they were mostly lies created at school wtf.
Yeah Name Of The Wind tho I finished was just 3 stars for me too. Beautifully written with an interesting power system but other than that, the rest are so meh: Side cast, plot.. ugh
your videos single handedly got me into fantasy lmao, best booktuber out there

Wow such a great year of reading!! Loved hearing about your top books, we definitely have some in common as you will see, haha. Loved Legendborn, and can’t wait to read Wind and Truth as soon as I finish Rhythm of War! My top books from 2024 are as follows:
January: Tress of the Emerald Sea
February: The Hate U Give
March: Six of Crows
April: The Way of Kings
May: Funny Story
June: so hard (three 5 stars!!) Words of Radiance 😂
July: The Things We Cannot Say
August: Remarkably Bright Creatures
September: The God of the Woods
October: Beartown
November: hmm… enjoyment level? Butcher and Blackbird. Quality? O Caledonia
December: Two Twisted Crowns? Only finished 2 books so far so not sure yet!
You had a great year as well! 2024 was 🔥🔥
@@Smitty1423so good!! I’m seeing more literary fiction here than expected, it’s giving fantasy a run for its money 😳😂
Jan - Midnight Library. I read Poppy War this month as well and I agree with you. I think the audiobook does the book a disservice. I actually did not like the entire trilogy and I think that was partially influenced by the way Rin was portrayed by the narrator. If you go back to it, definitely read it. I'd be interested what you think, but the 3rd book is my lowest rated book of all time and I should've just DNF'd it
Feb - Read 4 books and none were good enough for this list
Mar - Harry Potter - Prisoner of Azkaban. First time reading through HP and loved this one
Apr - The Lost Metal. Rhythm of War was a close 2nd
May - Shadow of the Gods. Read 7 books this month so a bit tough
June - Dungeon Crawler Carl
July - The Will of the Many
Aug - Tress of the Emerald Sea
Sep - The Nightingale
Oct - Scythe
Nov - Blood Over Bright Haven. This was my highest quality book month so hard choice but it wins.
Yo your year was incredible! Like so damn good
@@Smitty1423 It's been a good one for sure. Excited for 2025 though: The Sun Eater Series and The Wheel of Time incoming
Thank you for being honest about red rising, I also thought that it was just okay 🤷♂️. But I’ll give the second a chance cause you thought it got better
Yeah the first one was just okay! But man the rest of the series was insane
My 2024 reading year is my best so far! Currently on the way to finishing my 53rd book of the year!
That’s dope such a great year!
once i finish wind and truth I'm going to start the sun eater series because of you.
You gotta check back in and let me know what you think!
My personal reading goal was 40 books, and I just finished book 41...so just made it
Jan - A Memory of Light (#14 in Wheel of Time Series)
Feb - The Subtle Knife (#2 in His Dark Materials)
Mar - Not a great month but the best was Breach of Peace and Rebel's Creed by UA-camr Daniel Green
Apr - The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue
May - Dark Matter
Jun - Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell
Jul - GREAT MONTH, but I can't decide between Tainted Cup and Vanished Birds
Aug - Project Hail Mary
Sep - Read the Mistborn Trilogy this month my fav was Hero of Ages
Oct - Best Served Cold just nudges out Hyperion
Nov - I liked Dreams of the Dying slightly more the The Lies of Locke LaMora
Dec - Gonna be a tough one just finished The Fifth Season and I loved it (starting The Obelisk Gate today) but I really really loved Dragon Mage as well...sooooo to be cont.
Congrats on the 41! Looking at your year it’s going to be hard to top in 2025!
Man. Man. This is my favorite Sun Eater yet but at the same time, I feel like Christopher Ruocchio has personally scarred me
My man I was soooo scarred after reading that, good luck in Ashes of man as well lol
@@Smitty1423 Thanks! The whole torture-to-Severine proposition part of this book is like 4 hours that I'm gonna need therapy after lol
January - Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis. Its his take on pulpy old school sci fi, so so fun and thought provoking. 4.5 stars
February - I only reread books this month, so probably Drawing of the Three by Stephen King. 2nd book of the Dark Tower series, where it truly comes to life. 5 stars.
March - 11/22/63 by Stephen King. This one was a beautiful slow burn that will make you rethink your preconception of Stephen King. 5 stars
April - Duma Key. Ok ok I know this is a lot of Stephen King, but he has some total bangers. This one is best read without knowing much, but there's some hauntingly beautiful magical realism. 4.5 stars at least
May - That Hideous Strength by C.S.
5 stars
July - The Shining by Stephen King - There's not much to say on this one. You know the story. 4 stars
August - American Gods by Neil Gaiman - Fascinating exploration on what America puts its faith in, with a unique perspective from an Englishman. I know Gaiman seems like a scumbag right now, but he sure can write. 4 stars
September - Golden Son. Freaking awesome. What else can I say. 4.5 stars
October - The Green Mile by Stephen King.
Thanks for making this list and yeah Wind and Truth def will be the one in December lol
I really love the Dungeon Crawler Carl series. Never read anything quite like that combo of balls-to-the-wall insanity and emotional gut punches. Hope you get to read more of the series!
That series goes so crazy I can’t wait to continue it!
your video about it has me interested in possibility reading LitRPG
@ let’s goooo
Don't even worry about "spooky season." You can read horror anytime you want. If you are into other books in October just read them. Great video, as always.
Thanks for that yeah I felt lowkey guilty but those books were too good not to get through lol
Sun Eater definitely
@@darren2880 goes so crazy
In fairness, I haven’t read the Sun Eater series yet (though it’s my next read), but that Red Rising original trilogy is still my favorite.
That first trilogy does go crazy
I’m reading my first Brandon S. book in 25’. The Way of Kings. I hope I like it 😅❤
Hope you enjoy your journey!
I really want to sink my teeth into fantasy. I’m worried about extensive world building and maps on pages but I’m keen on getting into it on that level! Any recommendations for a newbie? Preferably not too many books in a series. Go easy on my pocket please 😅
Mistborn is a great place to start in my opinion
@@Smitty1423 thanks man! 🙏🏽
Hi Smitty!!! I absolutely lover your recs, I found some of the best books because of you and I think we share similar tastes. However, I really freaking hated Dune (movies and the books) but I loved sun eater, so I was just curious: Dune or sun eater, which is your favorite?
Sun Eater and it’s not even close
@ 😂😂😂 oh good
Since you loved John Gwynne so much, you should try out his The Faithful and the Fallen series!
On my list for sureeee
Boys. I am in the middle of Mistborn Book 2 and I think I love Sanderson. Do I go straight into The Way of Kings after this series?
You can but if I was to go back I would honestly go right into era 2 up until The Lost Metal
I read so many books the days just kinda blur together 😅 I couldn’t tell you what I read when if it weren’t for Goodreads lol
A great resource for sure
I read 1 book this year. Hoping for two next year!
Amazing! Which book did you read this year?
@@Smitty1423 “Cold Storage” by David Koepp. I got it because my brother and I used to live in an old building named Cold Storage and it was a crazy place. This book was nothing like it but still fun to bond over. It’s a sci-fi/horror about a fungus. I gave it a 4 star and it was a fun quick read.
@@Nick-ew2dp will have to look into it!
I’m in a dilemma Smitty. I just received books in the mail and I need to know which to start first. The Rage of Dragons or starting up my first Sanderson read with The Final Empire
I would do The Final Empire first get through era 1 then go to The Rage of Dragons and The Burning Series
@ awesome!!! Thanks for replying so quickly. Wasn’t expecting it lol
@ haha I finished a chapter of Wind and Truth so I was peeking through the comments
@@Smitty1423 I’ll get there one day and then I can be with all of the other cool kids
I’m trying to get into way of kings right now, how many chapters did you read before you got hooked?
Probably a 1/4 of the way through but remember I dnfed the first time then came back with a fresh perspective
Throughout the trials and hard times of this year, one thought has kept my head up:
May 6, 2025
The Strength of the Few
Ready for it for sure
Have you read the bound the broken ? Idk how you are with Dragon rider series but that one for sure scratched an itch I didn’t know I had
Also it was you who got me to move up the Sun eater series and my god that shit was amazing 🤣
Like how insane was it
Not yet but on my list for sure!
Book 4 of 5 comes out in a few months, I believe like april or may
Please create a 2024 top 10 countdown! Pleaseeeeee
I will!
The goat
Haha crazy if true
I started Red Rising and then stopped its hard to get into it.
Did u read stormlight before mistborn?
Nope I actually read Mistborn in 2023
You should read assassin apprentice by robbin hobb
On my list next year!
Try Digging for God, by Tom Hillman
Thanks for the rec!
Just so you know, you have ALREADY cost me quite a bit of money this year.
This did not help.
Lol my baddddd
Say dungeon crawler Carl 3 times fast
Lol
FINALLY someone speaking truth about Name of the wind. Dead slow paced mess that never picks up or touches down with a villain satisfyingly. Engless side quests. Inconsistent power scaling. Writing skill cant mask the content for me. Biggest killer was having all this hype around the past deeds of the MC, only to find out they were mostly lies created at school wtf.
@@Zdahszdahs lol yeah wasn’t for me
Yeah Name Of The Wind tho I finished was just 3 stars for me too. Beautifully written with an interesting power system but other than that, the rest are so meh: Side cast, plot.. ugh
Yeah it wasn’t for me but I can see how other people loved it
