I see a few complaints about Fred stepping on Julian here a bit. True, he does... but overall this performance is really beautiful. Aside from being an absolutely mind blowing guitarist, Julian also seems to always be the most gracious guy in the room. Just his vibe. And no one on the planet plays piano more beautifully, tenderly than Fred Hersch. This is a pleasure to watch. Not perfect- but gorgeous.
Just recently have realized how great Julian is. Very special guitarist, not like any other.. Haven't heard Fred Hersch before. Their duo seems to be very nice.
Two players who had to come back from major injuries/illnesses. That commands respect in my view, regardless of whether or not one enjoys their playing.
Maybe I'm in the wrong perspective, but I feel like Fred was taking too much space during his solo, and overall the whole song, preventing the both to interplay. Having said that, I would love someone to change my perspective.
Julian started his solo line and he was aggressively shout out by Hersch. Later, in Julian's solo Hersch started to overpass the guitar pitch capacity comping without support or consistency adding higher notes and forcing Julian to follow defragmentation. Don't be Fred Hersch in your area.
I have never understood the “sports mentality” when it comes to music, like “my guy is better than your guy”. The whole point of creative improvisational music is to become the best version of yourself. There are so many great guitarists, all original in their own right. I’ve got $100 that says Pasquale himself would tip his hat to Julian Lage.
@@jonathanzielke2280 Who am i ? Pro musician since more than 40 years playing jazz. My father was a jazz musician. I have been playing with great musicians. I was at Berklee in the 80's. You have to understand that when someone has a big background, culture and ears one can not be impressed by whoever. Greatness ? What about Wes M, George B, Joe P, John S, Pat M, and now Jonathan Kreisberg, Jesse Van Ruller and all these players. I do not like Julian Lage, really don't. One of the most overrated guitar players. So grow up, get education, some ears and f**k off dude

That piano is mixed beautifully!
What a wonderful interplay!!! Two talentous "monsters" no doubt about that.

You should check out their duo-album "Free Flying", it's amazing!
Fred is one of the greatest living jazz pianists

what did Julian have?
Robert Varon Focal dystonia
...very lovely....wow! i have a hunch mr. Rivers is smiling from the beyond... ;) ♥
Great tune! Thanks to Joe Henderson for turning me onto this on his State Of The Tenor album. RIP Joe and Sam.
reid2hai Fucking love Joe but it was Brad Mehldau (who was taught and is influenced by Fred Hersch) that turned me onto this
Very Beautiful!
Oh my, inspiring.
Gosh Julian was clearly saying "okay I'm gonna straight out of the head and take my solo" but Fred was like "excuse me no."

@@chrisblahblahh4468 I don't disagree. It's not hard to overplay his instrument. I have trouble accepting both guitar and piano on the same tune
@@Bipedlocomotion Even on duet like Bill Evans & Jim Hall (album - Undercurrent) ?
I think it's very doable, but both need to adapt.
@@chrisblahblahh4468 I'm open minded, I'll give that album a listen. I dig both those guys so I'm sure it's a treat actually
@@chrisblahblahh4468 that album and their other one Intermodulation are incredible, but are there any other ones that come remotely close?
Masterful!!! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🎼🎵🎶🎹🎸🎶🎵🎼

Wow...amazing.
Wow - Julian standing next to that Steinway. Never realized how tall of a guy he is.
COOL! :)

Julian Lage new to me, very mellow and imaginative.

This guy’s about as good as Pasquale’s shoelace.
Who are you to judge? Enjoy greatness.

@@jonathanzielke2280 "greatness" ?! WTF !
@@anneonym7346 Bro, let's see a video of your playing? Who are you to judge. Both these players are on of the best of their generations.
