This song was my youth itself . I can not hold back the moving whirlpool that heats up ! My mind rose , and the admiration turned to reverence . From Tokyo in Japan .
Total control of the instrument 👏🏻 It’s got everything: beautiful harmonies, dynamics, great soloing… and a modulation a half step down, something quite rare 👌🏻
Rows and flows of angel hair And ice cream castles in the air And feather canyons everywhere I've looked at clouds that way But now they only block the sun They rain and snow on everyone So many things I would have done But clouds got in my way I've looked at clouds from both sides now From up and down and still somehow It's cloud's illusions I recall I really don't know clouds at all Moons and Junes and ferries wheels The dizzy dancing way you feel As every fairy tale comes real I've looked at love that way But now it's just another show You leave 'em laughing when you go And if you care, don't let them know Don't give yourself away I've looked at love from both sides now From give and take and still somehow It's love's illusions I recall I really don't know love at all Tears and fears and feeling proud, To say "I love you" right out loud Dreams and schemes and circus crowds I've looked at life that way But now old friends they're acting strange They shake their heads, they say I've changed Well something's lost, but something's gained In living every day. I've looked at life from both sides now From win and lose and still somehow It's life's illusions I recall I really don't know life at all I've looked at life from both sides now From up and down, and still somehow It's life's illusions I recall I really don't know life at all -Joni Mitchell
La música tiene el poder de la vida. Esta por encima de todo lo material, es alma, espíritu puro y deslumbrante. Es un idioma universal y con capacidad de aflorar los sentimientos más escondidos... Bravo Fred!! BRAVOOO
Really great how Mr. Hersch transformed the song into this piano version . I'm very impressed by this....It becomes more a "sacred song" than some others have tried to do. What a wonderful jazz interpretation it is.... reflecting about life. ...so profound .... great craftsmanship.
I love the subtle minimal "accidental" tilting into the new tonalities.. this is how music is supposed to be, just one note sticks out and guides the way.
No lyrics have touched me so deeply or stayed with me for so long as those of "Both Sides Now." Reducing it to an instrumental (however masterfully and sensitively played) reminds me of that other great Joni Mitchell song, in which she sings: "You don't what you've got til it's gone."
When Brad Mehldau plays solo piano, you can hear a lot of Hersch in his playing... which I would consider a great compliment. It isn’t any wonder though-Brad studied under Hersch when he was younger.
I have good ears , so I can understand the greatness of his performance with splendid skill and magnificent technique . From Tokyo of the Land of the Rising Sun 🇯🇵
I'm blown away. Absolutely gorgeous interpretation. Question: I've never been to Lincoln Center -- is that really the view down Broadway(?) from inside?
This appears to be at the Jazz @ Lincoln Center space, which along with Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, is a few blocks south, on Columbus Circle. The old site of the Jacob Javits building.
The Jazz at Lincoln Center has 3 musical venues, the Rose Theater which is the main music hall, The Appel Room which is a smaller more informal venue overlooking Columbus Circle (where this performance occurred), and Dizzy's which is more like a jazz club space with dinner tables overlooking Broadway. The Big Band plays in Rose Hall Theater.
Not really.... It was only recorded by Judy Collins (first public release), but was actually written by Joni Mitchell and later included in Mitchell's second album "Clouds" (last song of side B)
No no no no no...imo this is an amazing song with melody, harmony and amazingly strong LYRICS....sorry...but this 'instrumental' doesn't cut it for me...
Ted Greene seems to have been the only one capable of conveying the power of the lyrics instrumentally. Great playing by Hersch as always, but the folk element, so crucial to the song, is essentially gone.
overambitious and a little scattered. very ingenious soft jazz quickly changes to confused strumming and back again. Ultimately without a concept and a display of possibilities that don't do justice to the delicate song and its quiet intention. This is not how I imagined the two sides would sound.
Yeah, I’m gonna jump on this bandwagon as well and say that is an incredibly stupid comment. Him being gay/being HIV positive has nothing to do with the formation of his passion for music, which has existed since he was very young. Completely irrelevant and insensitive to bring it up.
This performance takes away all the world's jagged edges at 4am, and leaves me hopeful for the dawn. Thank you Mr Hersch.
What a poetically beautiful comment to a poetic display of musicianship... Yes, you said it, Barron Hall.
When you hear great music, you will know from the first note.
This performance is one of them.
A good example of the type of jazz I like: the ability to improvise without losing the beauty of the underlying melody.
I thought this song would lose its power without its haunting lyrics. Fred Hersch proved me wrong. What a wonderful interpretation...
June Lee just uploaded a transcription of this wonderful performance!
Simply brilliant. Such tonal beauty makes me cry. So glad to be alive to hear this song.
Beautiful, it’s as Hersch is singing with the piano.
For some reason it almost made my cry. Very touching
very touching cover of one of the finest folk/rock songs into jazz genre and by one of the best improvisers of said genre.
I wish to get lost inbetween the notes and melodic lines here for eternity. Simply divine. ❤
No word to describe such beautiful sound, thank you Mr. Hersch.
@@bobbiebaucom2023 thank you for the suggestion! 🙏

And DON'T HOLD IT BACK! Let it HEAT UP, like you said. And up and up and up...!
Love to my Japanese jazz compatriot from NYC.

Good luck !
Someday please come to Japan
In an interview Joni said that a chord is the depiction of a feeling. Hersch's chords depict so much feeling!

From give and take and still somehow

Tears and fears and feeling proud,
To say "I love you" right out loud
Dreams and schemes and circus crowds
I've looked at life that way

It isn’t any wonder though-Brad studied under Hersch when he was younger.
Others who have studied with Fred include Eldar Djangirov and Lynne Arriale.
And to be fair, a respectful dose of Keith Jarrett in Fred’s wonderful playing… and Bill Evan’s in Keith’s etc etc
i guess i ll never more love again. this song ever after.
I just love this.

Both Sides Now is Judy Collins not Joni Mitchell.
Actually, Joni Mitchell wrote it. Judy Collins sang it later on in her career but did not write it.
I didn't know Joni Mitchell wrote it, but Collins did record it first. Just another amazing song to add to the Joni Mitchell career I guess.
original Joni Mitchell
Ronda Bernstein you are a moron then !

this is a piano cover, what do you expect?
This is a homage to Joni Mitchell by a genius jazz pianist. It's not a copy it's an interpretation.
Ted Greene seems to have been the only one capable of conveying the power of the lyrics instrumentally. Great playing by Hersch as always, but the folk element, so crucial to the song, is essentially gone.

He is gay and has hiv but he has found his passion
Zackary Gomez what the actual fuck is this comment
why even say that? music transcends and that matters.
What an appallingly stupid and insensitive comment!!
