"Play That Funky Music" by Wild Cherry; "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder (these two are actually somewhat similar--same position, many of the same notes); and "Disco Inferno" by The Trammps.

Thanks for these videos, they are great for finding new songs to practice. I also like how the songs do get a little bit more advanced as the video continues, that way it's not just for complete beginners
Awesome, simple tutorial. I really like the standard notation along with the tabs so I can try to learn to read music better. I would love to see a little more on licks and fills that could be used to spice things up to help improve my improv skills. Thanks! Cheers.

Idk how it happened but playing number 3 with this like metal setting on your amp or in my case headphone amp thing with the gain turned up is hella fun
Fantastic video this one Luke. I do love the theory one's they are so important but once in a while it's great to be able to just jam along with some of these songs.
Just been playing bass for about 6 months, and your videos have been super helpful! I'd really like to see a video about reggae bass if you are looking for suggestions.
Cool lesson Luke. Funk is not something I am particularly into but I love challenging myself with difference genres. These are 5 good ones to begin with. And you hit it on the head when you mentioned hitting the G on the one. Not sure where I learned that but it was a lesson about playing funk, and most important is hitting the one. I think Bootsy might have said that. Thanks!
For sure @Thomas Fioriglio - Bootsy is all about hitting hard on the one. All the James Brown stuff he plays on is like that, and then the Parliament Funkadelic and Bootsy solo stuff takes it to the next level.
@@5thbassdrum Not into. Well, I just don't know enough about it. I am sure there is some funk I dig. I do like James Brown. I just don't like the slapping and popping funk bass playing. Grooves are cool.
If you like Anthony Jackson listen to his work with Quincy Jones' album "Sounds and Stuff Like That". I was into The O'Jays but didn't know that Anthony was playing bass. I the Air Force in 73, from 69 until then, music had done a major swing for us at that time. AJ is the SHIT!!! He is so tuff that Fedora has a 6 string Contra Bass signature bass for him that's $20,000!!! 36" scale, single coil pickup, and no control knobs. For those of you who didn't know.

Luke, I just discovered your channel. Really enjoying going over some of your older material too. What is that awesome looking bass you are playing? Do you know of some simple and effective way to change the sound of a bass (like peddles do) but without the price of peddles. Perhaps using just one peddle that is controlled/managed from a laptop or phone. Possibly not a solution for advanced players but something that lets us beginners explore different sounds on a budget. Thanks again for the material.
Luke - I just found your "Guaranteed to Impress" videos - I am LOVING THIS! Could you please tell me what you use to make the drum beat? I have to get one!
My guess on "Get Up Off the Thing" - they recorded it either a bit too fast (in G) or slow (f#), and changed the tape speed during mix down, or even in mastering to get the song to feel just right.
I'm just getting back into playing bass after concentrating on guitar, banjo and mandolin. I found that I'd completely lost my confidence over a 20 year period. So I'm looking at UA-cam to get me back up to speed.
Started playing bass recently but im having trouble running my fingers to play the fast notes when the notes are on the same cord. What would you recommend for practice
Stretching your fingers to different frets can be really helpful rather than shifting side to side and get slower. It was really hard for me to stretch at my fingers more but practice is key.
That's a fantastic Spector you have there man, it sounds great. I got myself a super lucky deal on an amber burst Legend 5 classic with neck-thru, custom gold hardware and EMG's around September, decided it'd be cool to get it to mark the 5 years of playing as well. It gives an amazing growling sound but it's nothing like a fuzz/distorted/overdriven growl, the only thing I can compare it to is either deep thunder or maybe an earthquake. I have a massive weak spot for that sort of tone, not distorted but super growly and low. A perfect demonstration of the sort of sound I'm on about is the tone of the bass behind the solo to Floods by Pantera, except mines just missing something, it's missing an ever so slight wavy sound that the bass on the song has, mine also sounds a tiiiiiiiiny bit less growly than the original as well. Do you know what that slightly wavy sound and extra bit of growl I'm missing might be? Been experimenting for months and I've been listening to the song for years, but the sound is very tricky to get. All in all, this was a great video!
What kind of bass is that? It's awesome! And is that a stock bridge or aftermarket? Nothing bums me out more than seeing a thin wimpy looking bridge on a bass which yours does not have.
The bass in this video is a stock Spector Euro LX. As far as I know, it's not an aftermarket bridge, but I did get this second-hand, so I could be wrong. The Spector buffs will know a lot more about it than me. Haha!
What OTHER beginner funk bass lines should be on the list?
How about some Sly and the Family Stone?
"Play That Funky Music" by Wild Cherry; "Superstition" by Stevie Wonder (these two are actually somewhat similar--same position, many of the same notes); and "Disco Inferno" by The Trammps.
Thanks @Christian Clausen, @taperpowell and @Paddy Scott. Some great songs here so far. Keep them coming!
The Headhunters or any Herbie Hancock 🔥👌👍✌️
Maybe Rick James' Super Freak? I don't know if it's a funk song but it's a fairly simple riff. Loved this video, Thank you Luke.

It's a proper banger!
Fun lesson! Thunderous E string FTW! I'm totally learning that O'Jays intro soon. Thanks
Yeah - it's a killer track! Anthony Jackson is the MAN!
To anyone wondering why bass players hit the 5th fret instead of the open note, it's bc of the tone of lower fatter strings.
