Jazz bass lines can be intimidating, right?
You see these incredible bassists creating incredible bass lines out of thin air and improvise like there’s no tomorrow - it can be super inspiring.
But then you hear them talk about things like ‘double chromatic approach tones’ or using the ‘Superlocrian mode’ over altered dominant chords or using the 4th mode of the melodic minor scale… It’s so easy to get discouraged and think,
“That’s too complicated...”
I’d actually agree a lot of the time! But just because jazz bass lines can be complicated, doesn’t mean you can’t dip your toe in the water with some beginner-friendly jazz bass lines instead, and that’s exactly what I want to share with you today.
By the way - this is NOT about creating walking bass lines. I’m talking about ‘bass line’ bass lines that stay the same pretty much every time they’re played, which means you don’t need to get bogged down in the theory weeds just to get through a bass line.
You can just play!

Even if you don’t actually want to get into playing jazz ‘for real’, these bass lines are a great way to have some fun, expand your musical horizons and help you become a better, more versatile bassist.
Plus, it’s always good to have bass line #1 up your sleeve at jam sessions - it’s a favorite of singers that gets called every once in a while.

Nice material to get bassists thinking in a jazz mindset. Playing even just cursory amount of jazz is great because it really builds some great skills - being able to read/play over different chords all over the instrument; being able to think about "composing" on the instrument in the moment; thinking melodically (among much else) - even if the player isn't going to play jazz as a main focus. I might add that one can really help oneself out by learning to read standard notation. I know!!! It sounds like a pain and a chore, and it is a bit, but once you can do it, it makes a huge difference. Imagine all the things you wouldn't know if you couldn't read & write in English - from being able to operate an appliance instead of taking days to figure it out first hand, to having an idea of distant lands you've never been to...and everything in between. It really does open up a world of ideas that might take you decades to absorb otherwise. That said, there's a great transcription of the Mingus solo on Haitian Fight Song in "Mingus: A Critical Biography" by Brian Priestly. (Actually a bunch of amazing stuff - not including the great biography of one of the greatest bassists/composers out there!)

Haitian fight song is pretty popular. It is known by many people who otherwise don't listen to jazz. I know metal musicians who are fans of that song and Mingus, in general.
I had the opportunity to see the Mingus Big Band perform at Yoshi's in Oakland CA, back in the late 1990s
They were incredible!
Side note: Two or three years ago, I saw Chick Corea in Santa Fe (I brought my son, who is a pretty good jazz guitarist) he was playing with Christian McBride, and Brian Blade. That was one of the best live music shows I've ever seen in my life.
Side Note Continued: The only other one I've seen that was in the same league was Zakhir Hussein and his tabla orchestra (also at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA...in the late 1990s). I've seen some great shows, but those two shows, in particular, were occasions where the stars aligned and amazing musicians had amazing performances, which filled the space with magic.
@michael adams - I'm sure a lot of people know Haitian Fight Song, but not nearly as many who would know the other four. For example, the original Mingus recording has ~185,000 views on UA-cam, which is a hell of a lot. But compare that to Fever (48 million), So What (4.8 million), My Baby Just Cares For Me (11 million) and Song For My Father (6.3 million) and you can see that Haitian Fight Song just isn't in the mainstream like the others are.
That doesn't mean it's not as 'good' as the others in any way. I'd never judge the *quality* of a song based on UA-cam view counts, but you can get an idea of a song's relative traction in popular culture.

You've got data to back up your claim about popularity too. I had anecdotal evidence, so I'll go with your interpretation, there.
Its interesting, too me, though that Mingus and the Haitian fight song, in particular, are so well embraced by metal musicians and some punk fans, where so many eschew jazz more generally.
When I heard the Mingus Big Band play the fight song it made the hair on my neck stand up. It was one of the first songs I ever tried to learn on bass, when I was gifted a Donner uke bass.

I hope they help! If you are trying to nail a specific song that's technically challenging though, the thing I would recommend would be to play it way slower than the actual tempo (just about as slowly as you can bear) and very slowly bring the tempo up to your current limit, then go back down.
Over time, your upper limit will get faster and faster until your can play it effortlessly at the actual tempo - or even faster so the actual tempo will feel like a walk in the park.
I wish that it was flipped so I could mirror the hand movements better

Maybe a silly/noob question, but why would you avoid open strings on an electric bass? Is this just preference?
In fact if you mute the strings well, it is not an problem. However, when we want to use same techniques like tapping and pull offs they sound much better when we don't play open strings. At least in my opinion.
Good question @Liana Wait - a lot of electric players avoid using open strings for muting reasons like @Ali Doğukan İleri mentioned above, but also, the tone of an open string can be very different from a fretted note (depending on the bass of course). Some basses 'solve' this by having a 'zero fret' where the nut of the bass normally would be.
It does ultimately come down to preference though. I don't mind using open strings at all - some people hate them.
