    I love that she is an unusual breed of service dog. I have a yorkie-dachshund service dog and I get a lot of looks because of it. A lot of people are used to seeing labradors and German shepherds. All breeds are capable! 😊

    Thank you for posting these! I watched them the other day and have been having a lot of success shaping my dog's natural response to my anxiety. So far so good! :D

    This seems like a simple method. I'm going to use this. I like using the word Alert that way my pup will connect easier with it. Very helpful. Thank you

    These videos will be so helpful. I am trying to train my pup to alert me when I am having anxiety and to comfort me, and i cant quite figure out how to get her to sense it before I know its happening.

      I hope this will help! The next step is to whenever you feel anxious, call your dog over, ask for the alert behavior, and reward heavily. When your dog starts doing this on their own, PARTY! Keep a log of your dog's behavior and your attacks to document. Most dogs are able to switch from this (a response) to an alert (when they let you know before you know it) on their own with sufficient rewards.

    • @YeshItsCourtney
      @YeshItsCourtney 8 років тому +1

      +Veronica Morris my issue is that my dog only does the alerts when a reward is involved right now, and we've been working on it for a few months. Is it because I'm not consistant? ( work, ie other things ) ?

    • @VeronicaAndBradMorris
      @VeronicaAndBradMorris  8 років тому +3

      Try giving your dog more of an opportunity to figure it out for themselves. When you are anxious, just wait for them to come over. If the dog doesn't come over, they haven't learned the response yet. Start asking them to do the behavior without treats handy. Then get up and get a treat, go back and sit down. Ask for the behavior again, then get up, get a treat, etc. This way the dog learns not to cue onto the treats, and the dog will start responding on their own to your anxiety levels, and not to the treats. Does this help?

    • @YeshItsCourtney
      @YeshItsCourtney 8 років тому

      +Veronica Morris yeah that makes sense. I just am packing it with treats right now so she knows the cue, i have her going on "if im biting my nails" to alert me as well as because i have liver issues to alert me when i am itching my legs but she only does them for treats and sometimes the off times she will do it without. The predicting anxiety thing is what i am really trying to focus on now and i have no idea how to do it lol

      Have you joined our free online peer guidance group? www.psychdogpartners.org/resources/support-listserv You can get lots of different ways to train there. The way I do it for predicting anxiety is start noticing when your dog does the behavior on their own, and do a self-check. For me, the dogs I've trained have all picked up on it pretty well.

    Very smart pup. I'm training my g-shep but she still gets quite distracted. The vizsla mix has the behaviours down, but she's too energetic and excitable in public, won't pass the behaviour test. Plus the g-shep just helps me feel more secure due to her size.

      Every time you are anxious, make it the best thing in your dog's life by using treats or a special toy. This will get them to clue into your anxiety. We have a free online peer guidance group through psych.dog . If you're interested, give me a call at 805-876-4256

      You can use this same method, but with any attention getting command you want. For example, my Standard Poodle would nudge my hand over and over again very insistantly.

    This is definitely going to be helpful once I get my prospect puppy and start the training. By chance do you have any recommendations of what I should look for in a dog or puppy to pick as a prospect? I'm still in the process of looking for one and don't have a solid pick yet for a puppy or dog if I happen to adopt.

    Have you had experience with dogs in training that may perform alert/signal behaviors with others? For instance, when first teaching a dog to nudge or paw, that dog doing it with other people thinking it is a desired behavior even though you only want that dog to perform that behavior with you. An example is your dog randomly pawing or jumping up on people visiting your home (not in response to anxiety of that person, but simply because you've been working on that behavior). Does that make any sense? lol I lost my dog three months ago and would like to look into obtaining and self-training an ESA dog for psychiatric reasons, but also want to teach that dog basic manners with others as well. I'm concerned of my ability to teach a dog to signal me with a behavior and also know that that behavior is not desired with other people.

    • @VeronicaAndBradMorris
      @VeronicaAndBradMorris  7 років тому

      With any behavior you are shaping, the dog will start to offer it when it is trying to figure out what behavior you want. So yes, if you train a dog to jump up on you, they may start jumping up on others. But it is pretty easy to train them not to do so and only jump up on you.

    I have a question I hope you can answer or give advice in the least. I plan to get a psychiatric service CAT. I know psychiatric service animals are different from service animals meant to help those who are disabled, but do psychiatric service animals get the same rights as a disabled person's service animal? What I mean by this is, are they allowed in public places? (ADA only states that dogs are only service animals, however, have been proven wrong with miniature horses and, occasionally, cats who are just as legal and qualified as dogs).
    Cats are not very common to be service animals, but I'm not the best with dogs and grew up with cats and am most comfortable with them. I have severe anxiety on a regular basis, combined with a severe depression that can come due to things that either trigger it to come, or can come out of nowhere and is extremely dangerous for my own well being. My doctors, therapists, counselors, and even my own professors in school have all recommended I get an emotional support animal, but I heard how little public access they have. According to the people I consulted with, (meaning, my doctors, etc.) I'm going to need more than just an ESA to allow myself safety wherever I go.
    I know certain breeds of cats are more suited for this training than others. But how does an animal become a certified psychiatric service animal? I already know training is involved. Is personal training enough, or is expensive training needed from other professionals? Where would I get the certificate?
    (I'm also EXTREMELY unsupportive of people who fake service animals and want an excuse to take their pet everywhere they go).

    • @VeronicaAndBradMorris
      @VeronicaAndBradMorris  7 років тому +3

      Only dogs and miniature horses can be service animals under federal law.

    • @Megan_Kasza
      @Megan_Kasza 7 років тому

      People have been able to get a service cat, but it's not common. I plan to have a cat. (Grant it, I WILL have to go get it certified and have to make sure to get past the legal issues with permission from the right people, but that's something I'm willing to fight for, even though it's a pain in the butt). I am also aware that it may only be possible in some states, not all of them. (And I know there is a difference between an ESA and a PSA). I'd be happy with an ESA if I were able to take it into public places, but I know ESAs don't require training and are not allowed in such places, which is why I am aiming for a PSA (Psychiatric Service Animal).
      I've been asking people with service animals about this to make sure I get the best advice possible for what to expect when they have a service animal and what is needed for training, etc.
      Your answer was not helpful at all, if not judgmental. I also appreciate how you ignored my other questions.

      A service dog is a service dog is a service dog. Calling them psychiatric service dogs is just an additional descriptor. A guide dog is a service dog for the blind, a psychiatric service dog is a service dog trained to help those with psychiatric disabilities, a mobility dog is a service dog to help with locomotion. Legally they are the same. Under federal law, only dogs and sometimes miniature horses can be service animals. Some states may allow other service animals, but generally cats can only be emotional support animals. Why? Cats are not trainable like dogs. Every dog can be taught to obey basic commands, but I've never seen a cat sit, not even for a treat. If you want a public access service animal, you will need to get comfortable with dogs.

      there is no such thing as certification. and only dogs and mini horses can be service animals by law.

    • @leavemaealone5694
      @leavemaealone5694 6 років тому

      Unfortunately, only miniature horses and dogs can be service animals. This is due to federal law, therefore it is impossible for you to have the same rights. You can’t go into a store with a service cat (since there is no such thing).

      Feemailgamer This is sadly a sign that your dog is not going to be a successful working dog. If they don’t have the drive to work and that ambition, it’s not going to be good for them to try to be forced into it. If they don’t want to do it it’s hard to make them.
