  • Jasper is a retired seizure alert service dog. Here I am demonstrating how to teach an anxiety alert. Jasper has never been taught this, so it's perfect to show you how to start to build it.

I did this with my dog and it works. I was kinda skeptical at first cause it took forever for him to figure it out but it works so well! Thank you for posting this! Super helpful!

I’m glad you made this video and at the same time I wish you would demonstrate putting your chosen marker word, YES, precisely with the desired action. Your dog will learn 10 times faster and so will your audience.
Please keep in mind many people who find your video are DIY service animal couples.
They are going to water it down themself. Your demonstration needs to be spot on even if you have to record it multiple times.

If you listen to the video it's not about the timing in the video it's about the explanation. I explain that timing is important and to mark exactly when desired behavior is given. As well as in the description. I would hope those watching would be able to decipher that for themselves.

I understand and I appreciate your reply.
All the same I would encourage you to make your videos with more thought to precise marking of the desired behavior. Please remember your video may be the first one someone comes across.
Verbal is nice and beneficial however a picture is worth a 1000 words and a video is worth more words than can be counted.

Thank you for your input. This video was made three almost four years ago.
You must have been seriously looking for videos like mine and then to take the time to correct me on my training. I be sure to add a video soon the lives up to your high standards of UA-cam videos and marker training.

YES, thank you for seeing me! I am indeed searching for anything and everything service animal related. Since Phoenix came into my life full-time in the autumn of 2017 I have been studying dog training in general and endeavoring to find service animal publications in particular. I don’t find it easy to find of the service animal publications I hope to find. At this point I think I could produce quality content in my own UA-cam videos if I had a clue how to get started. Want to tutor me?

I've had problems with leg tapping for over 10 years now, but coincidentally also struggled with anxiety. Are they connected? )-: Always wanted to know.

It is possible that they are connected. If your leg starts moving whenever your anxiety is up, then yes they are connected. However, if the leg bouncing does not happen during an anxiety episode, they are not. They have to happen at the same time to be connected. But yeah, because of the tachycardia and adrenaline and overall fear you will experience with heightened anxiety, any fidgety behavior such as leg bouncing, finger tapping, skin picking/scratching, nail biting, lip chewing, and so on, can be expected to occur. The behavior can be different depending on the individual or even the event causing the anxiety, for instance when I am having anxiety over a social interaction I will tend to bounce my leg and drum my fingers on my thigh, or cross my arms very tightly around myself; if my anxiety is from a PTSD flashback, I scratch my skin and chew the top layers off of my lips and even will chew off the skin on my fingertips, occasionally to the point of bleeding. If it’s really bad I curl my spine badly from “slouching” forward trying to become as invisible as possible. Although, since getting a service dog to assist with my anxiety and PTSD (among other things) she has been able to disrupt my spiraling thought process and prevent me from getting so anxious that I hurt myself accidentally.

Hi this is the first video that I have watched from you and I love it, I have anxiety and depression should I get a service dog to help me feel more comfortable at school if so what breed would best fit a dog at a high school?

    • @hannamyers7487
      @hannamyers7487  5 років тому +1

      Sophia Davis.
Please talk with your doctor first and see if they recommend a service dog as part of your treatment plan. Then contact an ADI trainer. You can find accredited trainers for service dogs on assistance dogs international website.
What breed of dog you get will depend on your needs. A good trainer should be able to help you with an appropriate breed, once they understand your needs.
Service dogs take up to 2 years to train, so please keep this in mind. They're also much more expensive then a regular pet. It's a big life change.
If you'd like, please check out our Facebook page Elite_K9 and Canine Kinship for more info.

Registration and certification are not required in the U.S. Legally to have and train a service dog, you first have to be declared disabled by your medical professional. Either your primary care doctor or therapist. They then need to prescribed you as treatment for your disability a service dog. Not an emotional support dog.
Service dogs under the Americans with disabilities act are dogs that have been trained to do one or more specific tasks "not including comfort " to help aid thier handler with thier disability. For example.. a dog that can detect low and high blood sugar in a diabetic. A dog that can guide you if you're blind. A dog that can alert you to the door, fire alarm or alarm clock if you're deaf.
If you have a debilitating disability were the help of a service dog would allow you to live a more normal life. Then I would talk to your doctor.
However keep in mind that each state has its own laws regarding service dogs. It can take up to two years to train your own dog with the help of a trainer. It can be quite expensive. So please do your research.
Do not go online and buy a vest. That is fraud and can get you a fine of up to $250,000 dollars and jail time.

Yes Canada has different laws regarding service dogs. You can owner train but your dog has to be certified through a ADI accredited organization. ID's and paperwork are required in Canada. Unlike the U.S
Good luck in your journey with your dog :)

This video is for instruction on how to train a leg tapping alert for a psychiatric service dog. I myself no longer shake my legs in this manner due to medication. So no to your question I do not shake my legs all the time. However I used to shake my leg in particular if I was anxious or my muscles in my legs started to Twitch due to nerve damage. And a lot of times I was unaware that I was doing it. So this particular task can be very helpful for those that have anxiety tics like leg shaking
