I have a kindergarten student that dresses every day in her own style. Last week she came to school with a dress and cowboy boots along with a paper crown she had made. Another day she wore leggings with rain boots a tee shirt and an apron that she liked. I love her style and her attitude that goes along with it.

There is a young girl that works at the local library and she does stand out….she dresses like she stepped out of the 1940’s. I think there’s a fine line between dressing your true style and dressing in costumes. Dressing in a specific vintage way can look very costumey to me, but that’s just my opinion and I would never say that to anyone.

I can relate to this comment. It's really hard for me to be anything close to a minimalist because I had so little growing up. And my mom grew up the same way. But, I am trying because years and years of "collecting" has turned the corner for me into an overwhelming guilt inducing amount of stress. But, I will never be a a 10 items wardrobe kind of person. I know how you feel. Through 8th grade, I had 1 school uniform, one Sunday outfit, half to 2/3 of which was hand me down, one play outfit, and a swimsuit. Schoolmates would ask me why, on the 2-3 days per year we didn’t wear a uniform, I always wore the same thing (my Sunday outfit). I told them it was because they were my favorites. When you only have one, it’s your favorite. It’s also your worst, your most colorful, your newest, and your oldest

One of my history professors had a formula where she wore the same thing on the same day of the week. I always admired her level of self confidence in not caring that she wore the same dress to all our Tuesday classes. I make a point of dressing well every day, even if no one sees me. For the first time in my almost 60 years I cleared my closet and only have spring/summer hanging in it. I turned the hangers backward so that I’ll know what I did or didn’t wear by the end of August. I will donate what I don’t wear. It’s a step towards cultivating a more streamlined wardrobe. I am looking forward to achieving a smaller and well-defined wardrobe that I love wearing every day. Thank you for showing us how to curate and enjoy such a small but distinct wardrobe. 💕

First, I love the ten item or so wardrobe concept. Secondly, I love the jean and shirt outfit , too. For a while I stopped watching your videos. I thought they had a harsh tone to them. Recently, I’ve started watching them again, and enjoying them immensely. Where I differ is wearing your best at home. I like to approach life in a pragmatic way. I dress for my lifestyle. Sometimes videos like these can make women feel bad about themselves and what they wear at home. Most men wouldn’t think twice about what they wear at home. When my husband comes home from work, or works in his office he is definitely in his home clothes. When I come home from work the first thing I do is change my clothes. If I wear nice clothes at home I will often put off doing messy jobs, especially since I have ruined several favorites. Now, when out and about I think it’s respectful to dress accordingly, but at home… I’m like Mr. Rodgers’s I like the transition from the outside world to my home world.

I don’t have anything that doesn’t get worn in the appropriate season or for the occasion. My at home clothes are mostly leggings and tees and oversized tops in warmer weather. They’re not stained or stretched out….they fit and are comfortable for puttering around the house.

I love this, and appreciate the encouragement to never mind what people think. I’m an old soul, I love dresses and skirts, and I take walks in the neighborhood every day. Sometimes I’m self-conscious that people probably think I’m weird, but I do it anyway because it’s me. I love the idea of how having the courage to express our true style invites others to express themselves, too. To stop being invisible in depressing, drab duds. I’m sure some neighbors do think I’m odd, but I’ve had a few lovely compliments, and actually no criticism, come to think of it. One man said he had noticed “that angelic woman”, another, “you always wear such pretty dresses!” “Your hair is so beautiful” etc… I am no model, but I hope that is encouraging to anyone else a bit shy to stand out.
I think dressing well is a way of infusing joy into the world for others. It’s giving beauty, color, delight into our surrounding space, the way flowers and leaves and birds do. It’s not about wanting attention, but giving joy. It’s not about thinking we are the stuff, but offering what we have and are.

I have read your books and love the concept. I follow your channel so I decided when we were going on our vacation in april, I would try this concept. We were gone for 3 weeks- my husband turned 50. One week it was just the 2 of us in the Dominican Republic; then one long weekend in Orlando with our adult children, grandson and my husbands parents to visit Disney and Universal Studios. Then finally 10 days or so alone before coming home.
I was amazed - it felt so good not to be so overwhelmed due to overpacking. I think the "paradigm shift" for me was when we were in our VRBO rental house in Orlando. I hung up my clothing in a walking closet and it had just my items. It was beautiful and relaxing and enjoyable to get ready every morning for Disney or whatever adventure awaited us for the day. When I came home and this is still in process, I put away all my winter/ not in season items and working on scaling down to a 10 item wardrobe (maybe just a few more than that) LOL but wow!!! I dress very differently from the ubiquitous black or gray gym outfit “uniform” that everyone wears here in NorCal. For one thing, I can only wear natural fibers, I prefer dresses and skirts over any trousers, and generally look “dressier” because of these elements. I do get those “what are you so dressed up for”? snide remarks, but I don’t care what other people think anymore, I’m 64 and dress only to please myself for decades now. If I had to wear that hideous polyester/Spandex gym uniform everyday, I would never get dressed at all! I think my soft, breathable dresses and skirts are the most physically comfortable choice of all. I wear a lot of silk and linen this time of year, and some cotton, if not too thick and hot. I also don’t wear denim, I just hate the feel of it. It’s just that fashion expectations have changed, dresses/skirt outfits were the daily wear of women when I was in my 20s-40s, we didn’t wear pajamas or exercise outfits as daywear until very recently, and I never will.

I agree with you. I'm 62 yo, and denim is not comfortable to me! Also, it so engrained in me from my mama that you dress presentable and yoga pants and pajamas are unacceptable other than their intended use❤

Thank you for this video, Jennifer. I need constant reminding because I struggle with dressing nice. I was recently taking out my summer wardrobe and putting away my winter clothes and I realised that I have so many clothes that are too small and I have to give them away. They are all nice clothes that I hardly wore and I just thought to myself, why didn’t I just wear them when they were a good fit and when I liked them. I was “saving” them for a special occasion whilst spending most of my time at home wearing joggers and an old jumper. Now, they are hardly used and I am giving them away. It is madness.

Jennifer, You have chosen especially lovely pieces for this season! Though I have been curating a “concise” wardrobe for over a decade, I still enjoy these inspirational videos. I like to think about cultivating “luxurious simplicity” in my life (and wardrobe). For me, that means: choosing what will delight and satisfy….and releasing everything that is not doing that. Whether it’s how I schedule my days, fill my plate, or how I choose my words….the intent is to identify what is bringing the most value and lean into those things. It takes restraint and consideration but it is well worth the effort. The fruit is beauty, health, simplicity, and effectiveness. Lastly, when I am pondering a decision and on the fence, I often find that “if it’s an I don’t know, it’s probably a ‘no’ “. Thank you for your beautiful content that speaks to so many likeminded people.

Your camel brown sweater with light trousers and your dark green dress are especially so lovely on you!
Over the past few years I've discarded items that no longer represent who I am or that no longer feel comfortable. I've worked hard on curating my closet to follow a set color palette, specific materials, and the best silhouettes that make me feel confident. By slowly easing into my new, or rather, more intentional style, I never felt self-conscious like I was suddenly dressing fancy. Yet when I look back on what I wore just 4-5 years ago it's so strange to think of!
The other day I received an unexpected compliment that I always look nice. Considering how unsure I have still been at times, it meant so much to hear and has encouraged me ☺️ I'm down to about 35 or so tops that I wear regularly and am very excited to set a goal for making that number even smaller in the coming years!
By the way, I often think of "Madame Chic" when I decide not to change out of my clothes after going out and it makes me smile because I always feel that much more accomplished as I do any small task around the house while still all put together, lol

I like nice clothes as well. I live a very messy life. We have a yard that requires much maintenance and my husband and I are the maintenance people. My dad was in the navy and wore a uniform. The uniforms varied accordingly to occasion and season and you didn’t wear your everyday uniform for dress occasions and vice versa. I was raised with the mindset that there’s home wear, out and about wear and special wear. At 64 I maintain this philosophy. At home I do dress casually, I don’t like to dress too preciously but, when I’m out and about I wear my out and about clothes. I like to dress according to my needs, but when I’m out I do attempt to but my best foot forward.
