Yes, people seem to not realize her greed comes from an extremely strong will to save the people she loves from monetary agony, since she saw her mother choosing death to save her and her sister from being killed due to not having enough money. She may tax the whole crew for ridiculous things, but under her economic guidance they'll never lack food, clothing, medical supplies or a safe shelter/boat, and she'll stop at absolutely nothing to use all her wealth to save a friend, like we saw during the Sabaody arc when they tried to "buy" Carnie.

I love the scene where Nami the first person to suggest to use the Skypea money to help fixed merry while other characters were interested in using it for their own selfish desires like more food, booze, books and fridge lock. Even Usopp didn't think of that. And she does it in the most Nami way possible in pretending to take majority of the money away for herself only to revealed her true intent of fixing Merry. This scene perfectly represented your point of Nami's obsession with money is not out of greed. This also shows how much she cares and value Merry as much as Luffy and Usopp does. She's not obsessed with money for materialistic reasons. She just views it as a safe heaven and as a non-violent solution to a problem. It's the easy most peaceful way of saving someone like Cocoyashi villagers and Camie

She didn't get to buy Caimie and Arlong didn't even honor his deal..... with those 2 situations alone this theory goes out the window. Sure she cares about not being poor (who in their right mind would want to) and tries to resolve things with money, but that just shows how dumb Nami really is since it has never worked. You can't convince me Nami is a good character with such niche things like being an accountant in an anime about pirates lol Her only saving grace in my eyes is that she unconditionally cares for children (yet letting momo be a pervert is something that always annoyed me) because I too love children and hate seeing them get hurt.

She spent most of her childhood scraping together money to pay back Arlong, so along with keeping the Merry/Sunny afloat and the crew fed, it's something that just stuck with her since childhood, she values money because it was literally the difference between life and death for Nami and her village.

For how mean she can be, one aspect I've always really liked about Nami is how she cares so much about children. From her refusal to leave the Punk Hazard kids behind, to her standing up to Ulti for hitting Tama in Wano, it shows just how much of an impact her mother had on Nami as a person, willing to risk her life for theirs in a similar way Bellemere sacrificed herself for children she wasn't even blood-related to. It's no surprise Oda said she'd be a child-care worker if she wasn't a pirate, because it fits her so well.

Something I love is her relationship with Usopp!! Probably one of the strongest friendships among the Straw Hats and you can feel they truly see each other and care for each other. Nami always acted nicer to Usopp then a lot of the other boys and I think that also is probably due to his more emotional openness, as well as having to work with brains over brawns!
There’s a countless number of scenes between them but one of my favorites is when Usopp first loses the money in Water 7 and confides in her that he felt ashamed. He felt so horrible for losing the money and he probably felt Nami was mad at him for doing so, but never once does she blame him. She shows an immense amount of care and outright says she doesn’t care about the money. Another great example of her putting friends and empathy over money!

Another cool thing I like about Nami is that recent arcs seem to be pushing a more "motherly" aspect of her, as if she is inhering Bellemere's character. From the PH kids, to Tama, to the wounded Zou citizens, Nami is often finding herself in a position of caretaker, nurturer, etc. And while that's a traditional female role, I like when it's done in a way that doesn't insult the viewer's intelligence. And it works with Nami because, like you said, caring about others is something she really wants to do but is afraid to be seen doing. I was half expecting Nami to adopt Tama at the end of Wano, and I suspect she will adopt someone by the time OP ends, be it Tama or someone else (maybe one of the seraphim), to conclude her motherhood arc.

might also be oda's way of showing her healing from Arlong even further, albeit in a traditional female role kinda way.
After all before she would never have been able to truly help others in need, having to use them in oder to save her village.
Her now being able to be the protector of others is a subtle way of showing that she is not the person she used to be.

I feel like in a lot of modern stuff, we try to get away from what we consider to be traditional or expected so much that we forget that those roles (in most cases) are still desirable and positive. Being nurturing and caring is something we associate with mothers for obvious reasons and there's nothing wrong with putting a woman into that role, mother or not. There can be immense strength in that role, such as standing up to a Yonko or putting an entire village on your shoulders. It's a good thing for writers to branch out from traditional roles, but it's always important to not forget the reason why those roles are traditional in the first place (obviously this doesn't apply to everything, but protecting and nurturing those who need it is certainly something you want to encourage in everyone, women included)

My absolute favorite thing about Nami is that, despite the fact that Zoro is Luffy's right hand man, Nami is squarely the second in command on the crew. Whenever the Straw Hats are faced with a difficult situation or important decision - where Luffy either isn't present or, frankly, too much himself to make an informed decision, it's always Nami who makes the final call.
In Skypiea when Enel was about to destroy the whole island and the whole crew had just reunited at the bottom of the bean stalk, in Sabaody when the crew was barred from entering the auction house and couldn't fight their way to Camie, in Punk Hazard when they discovered the kids Caesar was experimenting on, and most notably, in Dressrosa, where it was Nami who realised they had to get Momo and Caesar as far away from Doflamingo as possible when they had the chance, even if it meant splitting the crew.
I think Sanji, especially pre time skip deserves a lot of credit for being really important as a rogue agent who understands situations fully and does really important things like sabotaging Enel's ship or intercepting the Water 7 train, but Nami's ability to direct the entire crew to success is unmatched.
Also, the fact that she is so vulnerable compared to most other members of the Straw Hats makes it so, so much more impactful when she chooses to fight. She has some of my favorite fights and moments in Alabasta, Enies Lobby and Onigashima, because it is completely clear the stakes to her own safety are so much higher than they are to Luffy, Zoro and Sanji, and yet she still chooses to wholy and truly commit herself to her crew and their allies.

      @flamemasterelan 4 місяці тому +3

@@colorfulcheshire4181 This isn't really a complaint about her cowardice, though. It's about the writing. Too often, writers will introduce a token girl on the miniboss squad just so that the female MC has someone to go up against, because they're afraid of showing her fight against a man instead. This happens in a lot of media, from Japan to America. And if there does happen to be a fight between a man and a woman, the woman will almost always end the fight, whether the winner or loser, without a scratch on her.

One of the most beautiful pieces of Belle Mere's effects on Nami that i always notice is that she tends to act quite motherly whenever she sees a child alone in this world. She was the first to care for the giant kids in Punk Hazard, took care of Momo when he was sailing with them, took care of Otama before during and after the raid in Wano, she always tends to random children around and I think that's adorable. She even pulls some tough love punches on the crew, she is 100% an adoptive mom.

Nami is beautiful and feminine but she isn’t boy crazy, she isn’t physically strong but she is resilient, protective of her friends and will take on her fair share of fights in the saga. Nami isn’t a perfect human being nor is she top ten strength wise in the verse, she’s better than that, she’s a layered, flawed, and sympathetic character.

I love Nami's moments in Saobody Archipelago and Fishman Island.
In SA, while Nami didn't forgive Hachi for what he did, she was still able to move past her resentment and eat his takoyaki. Her moment also with using money to save Camie shows how selfless she is. "We'll play by the rules! We'll get her back" is such a powerful moment as she will do anything to buy someone's freedom (also shown in Punk Hazard).
Also, in Fishman Island, Jimbei was willing to accept any punishment, but Nami's not like that. As she states, there's no point in her resenting her past, and it was because of her suffering in Arlong Park that she was able to meet her friends.
It shows that Nami's suffering was not all for nothing and that her circumstances were what led her becoming the person she is now.

Since then, Nami refused to ask anyone for help because fishmen are so terrifying and she didnt want anyone else to die. But she asks Luffy for help and for the first time puts trust in her crew to help her and save the villagers who are ready to march into certain death.
Then she gathers herself and runs to help in any way she can.

How Nami cares for others is a reflection on how she has been cared for by other people. I know lots of people mentioned this but I will as well, is that Nami isn't just the ships navigator, she is the quartermaster, the person that takes care of their supplies and money. And as the Strawhats are a family that is a role that is in many if not most households around the world something done by mothers which basically makes Nami the Strawhats maternal figure or potentially the big sister of the crew. Another aspect of Nami's character is her maturity when compared to the other Strawhats especially early on before Nico Robin joined. She was the one mature figure in a crew full of goofy and immature boys.

"And as the Strawhats are a family that is a role that is in many if not most households around the world something done by mothers which basically makes Nami the Strawhats maternal figure"
That's a stretch, because you seem to be leaning into only the reagan era style of household, which isn't old, and is very artificial, and even the, the husband of the house did the taxes and handled the money.
The Quartermaster in private vessals is the captain of the ship in all situations outside literal battle. They handle the crew payments, duties, contracts and make sure the ship functions properly. Probably less so in OP but she clearly carries weight with her words among the strawhats.

She keeps the team in check and tries everything in her power to stop the dummy crew from doing anything life-threatening. I think Nami wants security but also Control. If She can Control the situation, then She can keep bad things from happening, She can prevent pain and She can prevent losses. When Arlong betrayed her, and She trying to slip back the mask of a confident woman in Control to the villagers who saw right through it, She realized it. That with no money, no security, She had time to think about how much Control She had of the situation: none. She had never had Control
I still cry everytime i think about the scene where She broke down, because my heart really went out for her
Not only that, her relationship with jinbei is really interesting to me. She had been abused, used and traumatized by a fishman She despises with all the fibers in her being, only to find out that the man Luffy trusts and Will eventually join the crew was the One that freed that 'monster'. But She didn't resent him for it. She got reminded of all the pain She had been through but She was fully aware it was not Jinbeis fault. Arlong was the only One that was responsible for his actions when he decided to take the east blue for himself, not jinbei. Just as there are bad humans, there are bad fishman, but it doesnt mean every single One is like that, especially not the fishman who was fully ready to take on the burden of her pain and apologize for it

Edit: ...and of course, she is this way because of her trauma too. Short after Wano, she was shown unintentionally using it, with Jimbei commenting on it in shock. And I feel this fits Nami super well. The prerequisite of attaining conquerors haki is to have kingly desires, and the drive to go for your ambitions. And what better way is there to describe Nami? I remember seeing people talk poorly of Nami because she's a "gold digger", which is honestly such a gross misinterpretation of her character. After Arlong Park, she never once prioritized money of the crew or anyone she befriended. And I'm confident that she wouldn't trade them for any amount of money if asked point blank because money for her means that she can protect and provide for those she cares about. If she was as two dimensional and greedy as people like to think she is, she wouldn't give the crew allowances, she'd hoard every bit of it for herself and would only pay for bare necessities. I once had a conversation with a friend about how eaxh Straw Hat would be as a romantic partner and Nami was ranked very favorably. We're gonna completely ignore the whole physical aspects of her, but she's loyal to those who have earned her trust, she's very smart with money, she is generous, her hotheaded personality would mean she'd keep you in line, and she's dependable when it counts. As for her over sexualization, it's anime, what do you expect? I personally have no qualms with characters being sexualized (provided they're of legal age of course, don't be gross) but what sets Nami apart from someone like Rias Gremory is the quality of the character. I do like Rias but the difference in quality is without question. Anyone can make a female character with big tits, but what makes that character truly fantastic is how they're written.

Nami and Luffy's dynamic is probably one of my fav in anime. The way the "help me" scene was built up. From Nami hating pirates to Luffy directly contradicting the way she thinks pirates act. To the treasure talk and how Luffy openly states the straw hat is his treasure then trusting her with it when she was at her most vulnerable. Then obviously the take down of Arlong. But man it goes beyond that. You see how dedicated and loyal Nami is to Luffy. Like not even romantically it's one of my favorite relationships.

Bell-mere also slapped Nami, when she said that Nojiko wasn't her real sister. when Nami slapped Sanji, it seemed like another example of Nami doing what Bell-mere did to her and it was the only time she didn't say "Sanji-Kun", it was just "Sanji", showing how disappointed she was with him.

Another reason why I think Nami wearing more revealing clothing is because of her tattoos.
When we first met Nami and when she was with the crew before her betrayal, she wears T-shirts to cover her Arlong tattoo. In addition to hiding her secret, the clothes hide her shame and despair. When she's in Arlong Park, she lets everyone see the tattoo while she's pretending to be this ruthless person.
Once Arlong is defeated, she removes the tattoo and replaces it with the tangerine-windmill--a combination of her adopted mother and her father figure. Then she wears more clothing that shows off her tattoo as a show of pride of her hometown which is now free thanks to the Strawhats. Her tattoo and her constant showing of it through revealing clothing is her showing her pride and happiness of being a Strawhat. And the fact that the tattoo is covering the stabbing scars she'd made also shows that being in the Strawhat crew has helped and heal her life.

Nami has consistently been one of the best characters throughout the time skip, and that really isn't something I can say for like half the crew. In almost every arc, she has had at least 1 well-written character moment, and her most recent in Onigashima, where she told Ulti that Luffy WILL become Pirate King, really convinced me that she, like Zoro, will follow Luffy to the end.

I see myself a lot in how Nami acts towards people. Honestly got bullied a lot for crying without understanding why which made me more secretive about my emotions. But when anyone I care about gets to the point of crying I don't judge, but rather respect them for being brave and ask what is making them feel the way they are. So yeah, I cried at the scene where Luffy gave Nami his hat. Not just because he shows that he trusts her to keep it safe but also that he returns the favour without any hesitation. It reminded me of how I wished for someone to help me back when the bullying happend and I realised I was crying joyful tears because I saw someone get something I never got, a friend that cares.

I think it's really sad that most people seem to disregard everything else about a character if they have sex appeal. Nami is sexy, and she both knows it and flaunts it, and it's a part of her character. But because she's a created character, and she's sexy with "ridiculous" proportions (have you looked at the characters in One Piece?) that is apparently all she's allowed to be, or all that is allowed to matter for some people.
I honestly think that Nami is greedy and selfish, but she's also generous, caring, and selfless. She absolutely loves money, jewelry, and extravagance, and she will revel in those things when she can. At the same time, though, she's aware of how little practical meaning those things have. I think this is very well demonstrated in Louge Town when she's trying on all the expensive clothes but doesn't buy any of them, instead opting for a mix of cheaper, more functional outfits that still look good. It shows that she is aware, both of what she likes and wants, but also of what she actually needs and will actually be of use to her.
I grew up poor, I had to see my single mother give up things she wanted and even needed to afford things that I needed. I can definitely understand Nami's desire for money, I have a similar desire myself. It's so clear that even before Arlong, she was still aware of the value of money, and she already had the tendencies to steal and try to charm people to get what she wanted. That's because she saw her mother doing it.
I think a lot of people tend to forget that we are following a gang of pirates. Partly because they are the protagonists and all extremely likeable, partly because Oda isn't really putting a lot of focus on the more pirate like aspects, but Nami is sort of an exception there. The fact that she's willing to lie, cheat, steal, play dirty, all these things make even more sense in a story where she is an actual pirate (which she is in this story, imagine that).
I have been half expecting her to parrot Luffy's line that he said in fishman island, but with money instead of food, ever since he said it.
She's not a hero because heroes share the money, she wants the money herself.
Just like how Luffy shared his meat, Nami has also shared her money, so the parallel remains true.
The crew aren't supposed to be fully moral people, they are pirates not heroes, they act according to their own desires and do what they want to do. It just so happens that while they aren't fully moral, they are still flawed but ultimately good people. What makes me like them and this story so much is that they are able to be both at the same time. Nami is both greedy and generous, selfish and selfless at the same time.
I love Nami, her manipulative tactics and abusive behavior is at times triggering memories of when I was with an abusive woman, but I expect that to be similar to how some people feel about Sanji. In spite of all that, I still absolutely love her character, her story, and the role she plays in the whole story.

One thing I love about Nami is she is probably the most resourceful strawhat. She is not strong, and she is not even the most intelligent member (though she's in the top half at that), but she is always instrumental to the strawhats' survival/victory, one way or another. The strawhats always die without Nami, either at the sea or in land. She will fool the right person, or make the right read of the situation (one moment people don't talk about much is the "cards" one in Dressrosa where she reads Doflamingo's entire hand), or make the right ally, and so on. She always finds a way to be the ace in the hole, usually in a way that doesn't involve fighting. And that's so refreshing in a shonen.

I fully agree with all you said here. It’s mind boggling how there’s ppl who don’t understand her character and call her gold digger, manipulative, abusive, etc and hate her.
She’s weak among the crew and she knows it. She also believes in the abilities of other members. But it doesn’t mean she’s always a damsel in distress because she asked Usopp a weapon to defend herself.
She’s not a gold digger for her own benefit. She manages the crew finance well, understand each member’s needs, and shares fairly. But when it comes to her friends, she will use everything she has to save them. Her sister also mentioned how selfless Nami is. Imagine how a 10 yo girl carrying a burden for the sake of a whole village. And probably her past also makes her have this motherly attitude that can be seen since Skypiea.
She’s not a mary sue character, which makes her so humane and relatable, perfect in her own ways.

It was a matter of respect moreso than betrayal. She did feel betrayal, i dont disagree, it's just she has limits to her empathy with that scene in particular cuz she's indebted to luffy/her crewmates. While I do love the "help me" scene, I think my personal favorite scene is the one where she is holding all the money Arlong gave her (16:05). You can see her gritting her teeth while she is faking how happy she is to have money now. Indeed after that, she runs away and leaves those money on the ground too. I think that's the beginning of ther "money-loving" persona. Of course, she actually does love money, but as it's clear to us, she would never value money over the other things she loves. Also in 16:20, she likes to TROLL high-class shops because at Logue Town she tried every clothes and did not buy any of the "fancy ones", instead she bought more casual clothes in another shop XD.
NGL, small-chest Nami of early One Piece was so cute... and since Oda loves the perv humor and boobs, he could've kept nami "cute" and contrasted her with the "mature" Robin. It would've still been "bad", but at least it would add a bit variance. It's a shame that she is always the token fanservice.
Another thing that I regret Oda never did is that he actually NEVER showed Nami drawing a map since Arlong Park... at least the anime gave her that much.
Nami is an amazing character on her own, but to me she shines the best in the story when she is in limited groups or paired with someone (Nami&Luffy, Nami&Zoro, Nami&Robi, the weak trio...). She is so funny seeing her interact with others. On the other hand, I like Robin the most when she goes off on her own. Every panel with Robin in it, it's automatically an interesting panel XD.

Wonderful wonderful look at our incredible navigator. One scene around Nami regarding trust that seems so minor in the big picture, though says volumes in the moment, is that Nami is the one Kiku asks if she can join her in the bath.
Rather than asking someone she already knows, Kiku feeling comfortable enough to ask someone she met recently implies a fair amount of trust between the two. More so with Kiku being someone who asks for so little in general.
The two of them have much more similar backgrounds than is spelled out in the story, with both taking on much of the share of the emotional burdens of those close to them from a young age and into adulthood.
And Nami would 100% be impressed by Kiku making a fool of that sumo guy by strategically acting the damsel in distress. Also feel it's no coincidence that Usopp is the one to call both Nami and Kiku out on not being genuine to themselves, during their lowest moments.

I can't help but think in Nami's heart, despite her love for all her crew mates, she always admires and holds Luffy in higher regards (okay, I guess not just her, clearly everyone does), I'm not talking about shipping just in her mind, Luffy is way more special and on a completely different level than other crews. Not because he is the captain but because he is her Savior and emotional anchor.
So when sth happened or she is in trouble, Nami always called out to Luffy or at least mentioned his name in front of others. In other words, she put her utmost trust into Luffy and her trust only grows more after sailing with him.
Also, regarding the sanji's whole cake island situation, I have a different opinion.
I do believe Nami can understand Sanji's situation, I mean she did the same thing back in arlong arc. She understands but couldn't stand it. THERE IS something you can say and you can't say....And sanji said that "something" despite knowing it well, so... Nami couldn't stand his words for insulting Luffy's dream. Even she clearly can tell Sanji was hiding some complicated situation. I mean I was the same around that chapter, I definitely know he is lying about his feelings, but insult luffy like that is a complete no no.( I don't even mind the beating he gave to luffy that much) it's like ussop said in Arabasta, can't tolerate anyone to laugh at your friend's dream, so when a "former" friend said something like that, it's still unforgivable and need at least an apology. So she went to defending luffy without a care about sanji's "true feeling behind his hostile facade"
So sorry, sanji, no matter how many things you did for Nami, luffy will always remain at a special place in her heart (again, not talking about shipping). And I do believe this is a trend in every strawhats' heart that includes sanji himself. 😂
