I hope you'll keep going. After Skypia it'll be a little slow because Oda seems to want to write something funny in the next arc like long-ring long-land after that he'll take you seriously and you'll see another peak in water-7 and enies lobby.
Favorite bit of this show is just how fucking *unashamed* it is to be a one piece show. The marines wear weird hats, they talk on snail phones, the mail is done by seagulls, and sometimes a motherfucker is just made of rubber
Yeah it's not afraid to be goofy, and I think that's it's biggest strength. So many (*cough Marvel) adaptations are scared of embracing what makes the original great.
@swans184 man twitter just revived the Scorsese vs mcu discourse out of sheer boredom because all the actually interesting people left for blueksy, let's not let that nonsense breach containment lmao Instead let's do a better one: ragging on live action cowboy bebop :D
@@swans184 In the most direct comparisons too. Marvel threw out Ms Marvel's entire power set for her own show because they were too afraid to make her the stretchy/embiggening gal she is the comics
While at the same time it doesn't FORCE goofiness that wouldn't work in LA. Like Usopp's nose or Sanji's eyebrow, or Luffy's aloof nature. Trying to be TOO much like the anime is also an issue, they somehow managed to capture the essence of One Piece without being a cringefest.
my 90 year old granma loved it. She was wide eyed when Luffy first extended his arm to hit Alvida, and at the part where Nami is nagging Luffy for letting Zoro fight Mihawk, she told me, with a very serious face "Sometimes you gotta let boys be boys, so they can become men, but you cannot blame her bcs she is not a mom" I was flabbergasted by her words of wisdom since she has gone a bit senile as of late, but the show had her snappy and sharp, meaning it grabbed her attention fully. I will never be able to thank them enough for this moment I shared with her.
i think it's the same for men and women or kids in general. you have to let them make their own decisions and their own mistakes so they can be their own person at some point. they is a a japanese saying: "if you love your child, let them embark on their own journey." (the original text probably meant an actual trip and not a metaphorical one... but of course maybe also mean a metaphorical one if you like to interpret it like that...)
Connor was definitely underestimating the normie appeal of the live action. Friggin Whoopi Goldberg was talking about it two days ago, and now Phillie D is binging the anime because of it.
@@stormysoup1083 the start of the Anime actually adapts more than 1 chapter per episode. only later on when the Anime started to catch up to the Manga more and more, did the pacing became worse until it was 1 chapter per 1 episode.
Whoopi Goldberg was on Star Trek and is well-known to like a lot of nerdy things. Philly D is also into nerdy things. Neither of those people are "normies". My parents are normies and they would think it was childish and stupid
@@TheBigMeetch ye i feel like there are levels of nerdiness, to people who are very nerdy- people like whoopie would seem like normies, but there are people who are actual normies, they only watch the most normal and mainstream stuff and anything else looks weird and cringey to them. Though i would say that people less than 40 today are less normie and a bit more open minded to different kinds of media and entertainment.
What Garnt saying is right the show is sincere and is never ironic or ashamed or points fun at itself to be witty to the audience. The fact that it where’s it hearts on its sleeve is great.
I will say, my 75 year old Stepdad absolutely loved the One Piece show. He grew up reading pirate stories, which I didn't know until I was telling him about this show, and when I described the world he got really excited to give it a look.
love to know more. Did he watch it in Eng dub? was there any shortcoming about the series that he did not enjoy? was the story easily digestible (narrative wise) . What scene hit the most for him? His prediction to future content or what the one piece is?
We watched it in english, so the language it was originally made it, as per my personal policy. He had a hard time for the first episode getting to grips with the fantastical elements, but once he had an idea of what the setting of this story was going to be he had a lot of fun with the show, said it wasn't the kind of thing he'd go looking for but he was glad he saw it.@@foster4241
@@foster4241 Honestly, other than weeaboo bias, there shouldn't be a reason for why someone would prefer to watch the One Piece live-action show Japanese dubbed.
@@foster4241 Of course he watched it in English, its the original language and the language the actors are physically speaking. Why the hell would he watch the One Piece live-action show Japanese dubbed?
My 59 year old dad also really liked it. He found it on his own and had finished it whereas I had only seen 1 episode and stopped. I only watched the rest because he asked me if I had heard of it and was excitedly telling me about it.
one thing I think was smart. Zoro only used three sword style twice, once at the start and the other against mihawk. It kinda makes it look like his strongest style and allows them to not have it in every fight as three sword would very goofy in real life, while two sword style had such good choreography
yeah LA zoro use 3 swords mainly for finishing moves at maybe like 20% of the time while in anime & manga he use 3 swords like at least 70% of the time
Hahaha you got me thinking how it would look if he were to actually fight like that in the live action. Just him shaking his head the entire time. But yeah, good point that the anime is literally just finishers when he uses it or slideshows.
and adding to that, child LA zoro train 2 sword style only to defeat Kuina, He Start training 3 sword style after Kuina Died, to honor her & their Dream. while in Manga/Anime He start to train 3 style after he got defeated but sadly she passed away before he challenge her again.
The thing is Japanese style sword fight shouldn't be this acrobatic. Japanese swords are very long and they usually hang cases on the side. Chinese martial arts characters on the other hand usually carry swords which are shorter in one hand and toss the case away or give it to someone to hold to fight.
I had the same thought Connor did, that this might be too weird for normies. BUT, I then had a similar experience to Garnt, where I was able to get two normie friends of mine invested in the show. Like, glued to the screen invested. I think that anime fans see cringe where normies don't, and vice versa. For example, Luffy constantly talking about his goal comes off as cheesy to someone who watches a lot of shonen and is familiar with that trope, but it might just seem like a unique character trait to someone who isn't as steeped in the genre.
I think that's very true about Luffy, Western live-action shows are full of jaded protagonists with a chip on their shoulder, so plop an optimistic goofy shonen main character like Luffy into that kind of show and you've got something really fresh and different. It works even better because there are other characters, mainly Nami and Zorro, who fill that "jaded stoic badass with a chip on their shoulder" role and you get to watch them slowly come around to Luffy's way of thinking, just as the audience would
Honestly, even as a person who got into One Piece straight from the Alabasta parts of it (I skipped out on East Blue arc), watching the whole East Blue arc in the live action was a fun trip.
I think it maybe is the same feeling you get when you sit down to watch your favourite show or movie with someone that watches it for the first time and you start to feel insecure about being it weird but they don't feel that way, we are just overthinking it.
Oda himself said his goal was to reach fans who wouldn't watch the anime and it definitely worked. Myself and multiple people I know said they wouldn't get into the One Piece anime/manga and yet we're all very invested in the story having seen the live action. It reached it's target audience and achieved it's goal imo.
Thing about the One Piece live action is that it feels like it’s Oda’s what if. A second chance to retell the story now that Oda has more experience as an author
Exactly. This has been going on for 26 goddamn years, Oda as an author will have changed in many way over that period of time, ANY author still writing after so long will always look back and think they could have done certain things differently
Idk man, doesn't seem that way when Maeda comes out in an Interview stating that they had to persuade Oda alot because he didn't like things, like the Garp storyline being so frontloaded. So this is quite the bold assumption to make, with no evidence to back it up.
Conor is definitely wrong on this one. This is the first time I’ve ever seen normies or friends/family watch anything even closely related to anime. The show is done so well that it stands alone on it’s own. I was shocked that people I couldn’t get to watch anime were watching this on their own volition. The power of a successful or viral Netflix show is crazy! I love how unashamed everyone is and how diverse the cast is. As someone who got fed up with One Piece and didn’t like it anymore, this live-action really hooked me and got me back into the series.
I am one of those normies 😅 one day out of boredom, I decided to watch OPLA. I was hooked in the first 10 minutes and I watched all the episodes in one sitting. I think the live-action has become a bridge for normies like myself to connect with the One Piece world. And I have to say, everybody in the fandom is very nice and welcoming. So, thank you!
I think the biggest success of the live action is so many people who have no idea what it is liked it. Had a friend told me his like retired parents were watching and enjoying it without knowing its anime/manga based show. Man the last one that translated this well had to be like Edge of Tomorrow? But that one was like they just took the concept and rework whole thing for the movie.
Edge of Tomorrow also got the advantage of starring Tom Cruise. The OPLA has a cast of mostly unknown to the casual audience. The show is successful through a lot of word-of-mouth which is extremely impressive
My father too.. he grew up watching and reading dragon ball, saint seiya, and samurai x and when he had me he still watch a little bit of one piece and Naruto since I watched them all the time when I was a kid 😂.. he sure love rurouni Kenshin live action and checking out one piece too.. he wasn't disappointed 😊
Alice in Borderland and Rurouni Kenshin had good live actions, translated well, while Rurouni Kenshin went a little away from the source material, Alice in Borderland followed the source material and was really enjoyable. But these are Japanese live actions which usually do well or at least better than western ones. One Piece is probably the first western live action adaptation of a manga that I enjoyed
no wonder cos hes still really into it for sure most of his takes are good and valid i just wish garnt have a better people to talk to about this kind of discussions cos its waste for him talking about it with connor whos cleary doesnt know what hes talking about atleast joey listen im okay with that.

Connor was definitely very very wrong. So many people have started the anime because of the live action! Is one of the reasons why i love the live action so much. Because it's doing what we all want. Getting people to give the anime a chance!
Damn Straight, I got the jist of the entire One Piece anime and manga just through short snippets and I am hooked, The LA was the bait, and I was the one who took the hook.
i sold my parents on this show by telling them its a pirate show with superheroes. Totally worked they texted me a play by play of every episode they watched
I've been following the Manga for 10+ years and it feel so refreshing to coming back to east blue. The live action make me want to reread the Manga AND re-watch the anime. It's also perfect introduction for my friend that don't know one piece.. That big W for me
I have little to no familiarity with the anime or manga. But it's honestly refreshing to see a live-action nerdy property that's just unapologetically silly and over the top. Especially after the abundance of meta 'Whedon-esque' humor in nerdy movies this past decade (e.g. "Erm... That sounded better in my head." "Well, THAT just happened!") that always need to make sure that the audience knows that the movie also cynically sees itself as silly. It's nice to see a show that doesn't feel like it has to justify it's silliness with a wink and nod to the audience and instead proudly say "Yeah, this shit is goofy and ridiculous. Watch it, or don't." I see characters like Merry who styled himself like a ram, or that one navy who has a mouse ears hat and whiskers, and was pleasantly surprised to see everyone taking them seriously, with no character taking cheap digs at their appearance. Really allows me to be more immersed and just go "Yep, this is probably just a normal thing in this crazy fantasy world."
The live action being a fishing net to catch normies attention and pull them in is the best outcome imo. It will never be as good as the manga, or parts of the anime, but if it can give people the feeling of why people enjoy One Piece, that's worth so much more.
I've actually seen more normies have a bigger positive reaction compared to already fans. Personally, from opinions I've seen of fans stating what they expected compared to what actually happened, I think fans have preconceived notions of what we expected the show _needed_ when a lot of our opinions aren't actually that important in telling a regular good story.
@@shadowgame0630 I’m saying Netflix used the One Piece IP to make a show that had a ready made audience and it’s hypocritical that when that audience is more critical of the show than the non-fans perhaps they should have made an original good show instead of using an existing brand if is supposedly irrelevant to compare the original source material to the new product. If existing fans opinions aren’t important to the new show then why did they use the existing IP in the first place?
@@shadowgame0630 “a lot of our opinions aren't actually that important in telling a regular good story” when that “regular good story” is the substandard story that is told through the live action. Do your best to keep trying to read 🙏
Watched it with my non-anime-fan wife and she really enjoyed it and got, to my surprise, really invested and interested in the world. So now we're really looking forward to s2. It's such a cool thing to be able to share that huge world. I've never thought I could get my wife into One Piece at all. And now she's a Zoro fangirl.
My opinion on Chopper is that if Sonic the Hedgehog can be done in live action Chopper can be done. Also I hope they slow down the pace of the show in season 2.
I also thought it would have been cool for them to use pupets, OR make a blend with some of the original designs that had more human proportions, and make it similar to the fish mam, and use makeup and prosthetics
i think they should just make chopper a kid with deerlike features like his horn and blue nose but make sure hes cute cos his personality is mostly like a kid anyways so why not make him one and most of his dynamics and interaction with everyone will be like in the manga if hes a kid its also cheaper and they dont need to sacrifice his screentime to fleshout more about his character. also goda himself said he made chopper cute cos of his voice actor so why not go full cute on him lol..
There are live-action Sonic MOVIES and therefore they have the budget and whole composition built to fit the CG characters specifically. How many consistently present CG characters that interact with the environment do you see in live-action shows? Every second active on screen they bleed money. Also the way you compare implied they'd actually make a fully "unreal" character like Sonic and not even have prosthetics and/or puppetry that are patched with CGI, which is far more laborious in the long-term.
The one part they missed out on was Arlong noticing Zoro’s Mihawk wound and saying something along the lines of how are you even fighting, or doing anything in this state. That showcases how serious the wound is while making Zoro out to be a monster for still being able to fight in this condition.
I’ve never watched the one piece anime in my life, I thoroughly enjoyed the live action as someone’s who’s watched anime my whole life. Solid 9/10 for me.
@@dtechzsama I love the anime. On Alabasta arc now. Did skip some unimportant episodes like in the whale stomach. Original is funnier and more heartfelt.

I tried to get my dad to get into One Piece but we stopped at Syrup Village but we're almost done with the live action and he's reacting to Garp being Luffy's Grandpa was priceless 😂
When I see people liking the live action Garp I just cannot wait until the LA gets to Marineford (fingers cross). The pay off will be huge. Just imagine the scene where Garp goes "why didn't you live like I told you to?" will hits different.
Oda set a goal for the live action and based off of it's reception, he killed it. The only people I know that didn't at least really like it are HARDCORE anime fans because it wasn't 1 to 1 but it was NEVER going to be.
When I was watching this show, it reminded me of the movie Hook in how they had this super fantastic world but thanks to the costuming and set design, they were able to find a way to ground the world in reality.
YES! I thought I was the only one who thought that! The Baratie in particular reminded me of the docks set from that movie! And Zoro has some Rufio-esque vibes
The live action is suprisingly really good. I actually did show it to my mum, who insisted she really despised all anime-related things, but turns out she really enjoyed it and keeps now randomly repeating some of Luffy's voice lines 😄
@@JohanssonDesign Hasan thinks he's right but that guy is just saying something that is one of the most out of touch BS that I've ever heard. Blud is smoking more high than Sanji's ciggies. 🗿
There's probably 4 distinct ways they can attempt to do Chopper. First and most expensive is to go full CGI and have a Detective Pikachu or Rocket Raccoon like character. Second is to have a full puppet like Baby Yoda. Doesn't look as realistic, but because of that it avoids the uncanny valley. Third option is a human kid in reindeer makeup VFX. The biggest issue with this one is that the actor will noticeably age throughout the seasons of the show and it would be much more noticeable than the aging of the young adult cast. Lastly a short person in a full costume like the Ewoks from Star wars. This works, but these tend to be the less emotive option and it makes it hard for the actor to stand out.
I think a combination of a puppet and CGI for the expressions and whatnot is the way to go...but I do think it's doable without going overboard on the budget and give enough screentime
I feel like the Baby Yoda option works the best. The Mandalorian already set a precedent, and it fits the tone of the show (although Baby Yoda didn't move as much). But there are great TV shows and movies with cute puppets (Alf, Labyrinth, Dark Crystal).
A baby-Yoda style Chopper wouldn't be able to fight... but Chopper needs to fight. I think they will go for a short adult in makeup, shorter than the rest of the crew but not a kid
My 65 y/o dad loved the show! He watched it on his own and recommended me the show, like I didnt know what it was lmao. (I DIDNT EVEN KNOW IT WAS UP ON NETFLIX UNTIL HE TOLD ME).
I think the secret to a successful adaptation is simple, have the original writer come on board with a veto right on what needs to change and what needs to be left untouched...
It works mostly, Oda managed to veto most things except Garp, when he vetoed that That triggered Steven Maida's ego as seen in a screen rants extra interview and he kept pressuring him to include it until he caved And now we have 100min of his ego on screen, Garp being where he wasn't wanted by the creator and that cracked large portions of Sanji's Amazing Arc from a 10/10 to a 7/10 with the backstory still 10. They had to cut Don Krieg added in Arlong in Baratie which Oda also didn't like And more.
East blue was a very good introduction arc and live action friendly. Crews, pirates and navy are all borderline super human at most and not many devil fruit users had been introduced. Costumes and actions could be re enacted without heavy use of cgi, both anime and rl shows watchers like real drawings/actions instead of goofy cgi. But it takes a lot of resources for hand drawn/real actions, and almost impossible once we get into next season when most enemies and friends are DF users or non human.
I’m a One Piece fan, but my girlfriend had no desire to get into it. We watched the Live Action, convinced her to start the anime, and now we’re in Thriller Bark! As a One Piece fan, the live action helped grow the fanbase even more!
Live action MHA worries me because of how inherently Japanese it is. It's not set in a fantasy world, it's set in modern-ish day Japan, and Japanese national identity is a pretty big theme in the story. I don't see how a live action could work if it isn't set in Japan with a Japanese cast.
Oh. I never watched or read it. But it always seemed heavily inspired by American comics. This sounds like another thing they possibly got from there. Sounds interesting.
I wonder if they’ll ever make a monster live adaptation because this has been stuck on my mind that this would be one of the perfect anime that can transition into live action.

My dad and I don't share a lot of interests, so when I think I find something we can both enjoy I'm desperate to share it with him. We watched the One Piece live-action, and when I said we were on the final episode he said that made him sad. When the credits rolled, he said that out of all of the shows I've shown him, this was the best. That really made me smile. I hope the show keeps going with this level of quality and faithfulness, because I know my dad doesn't have the time for 1000+ episodes of the anime.
The live action is way more accessible for 'normies'. I have recommended the anime to si many people over the years and maybe 10 percent watched more than 10 episodes. Meanwhile with the live action, even my aunt and grandma watched it and liked it.

I think it was a genius move to have the ongoing joke of "real fighters call out their finishing moves" it let Luffy scream out gum -gum without seeming ridiculous or super anime
It's 8nteresting because of the criticism by anime fans (like when connor said about luffy saying he's gonna be king of the pirates) and I was like, that happens so much in anime. It's clear people have far lower standards in anime than live action.
@@itsgonnabeanaurfrommei think it's more of what works in one form of media doesn't work in another. animation can make really wacky stuff and it will work while in live action if you try to do it, it can come off as sometimes ridiculous. Most of the production timeline for se 01 was preproduction and writing. Makes a lot of sense since I can only imagine that time wws spent ironing out story beats and detailing changes from the manga with Oda as well as casting and artistic direction (ie. What will the sea kings look like? How accurate do we want the costumes to look like? Does finishing move callouts work? Etc.) The actual principle photography only took about 8 months and post production took ab a year. So it would probably take roughly 2 years for the next season- possibly even less since most of the development work can be more streamlined this time around
I was at my mates house and his retired Carpenter Dad was talking about a funny pirate show that released on Netflix. He was so upset there was only 8 episodes! I was surprised that he knew all the strawhats members names and also liked Zeff and Garp very much. I told him there was an anime with 1000 episodes and he was shook 😂.
"A funny pirate show" and this is why OPLA is such an hit with normies. At it's core, it's a funny pirate show where the pirates are either super human or have a weird power due to eating a weird fruit. The basic premise isn't that strange to get into. Normies like pirates, they also like super powers.
As an anime family my wife really did not like One Piece but when we watched the live action she binge watched it like an addict, then watched it again. For me personally I am glad it has worked out well because it might just open the door to a lot more people exploring all the different types of anime out there.
It took almost 3 years for season 1, but that's also bc of covid constraints. I think one of the producers said they expected the next season to take 1-1.5 years to film.
That and by the time season 3+ comes around Oda should have finished the last arc of OP and be more readily available for writing. Hopefully season 2 completes Alibasta in 10+ episodes (Chopper needs his intro too) and if a season 3 re-up is announced, I hope the pirate rap from the 4kids"dub" gets reworked a bit and becomes straw hat rap for promoting season 3.
I had a similar experience with Garnt. I had friend, who's practically the stereotypical jock who loved the show and said he considered watching the anime after. He probably won't due to time and his job, but yeah. In terms of recommending the show to "normies" who has no intro to anime, I'd preface it as a tv show that is closer to a theater performance. The characters are camp and zany, and there's a lot of suspension of disbelief. The corny-ness is part of the charm. If they're the type of person to like that kind of genre, they'd probably like the live action.
The stage play comment is my exact feelings of this show. The live action One Piece feels like a stage play. Which actually makes some of the things that could be complaints actually be improvements. Like how the fights felt very choreographed. Or how everything felt unrealistic in a way. Unrealistic in a way that felt like a stage performance. Kinda loved it.
I absolutely loved the choreographed fights the actors/actresses did in the show. Especially, Iñaki Godoy, Taz Skylar and Mackenyu for doing their own stunts.
Fun fact! The Marvel Syndrome referenced in the video has an actual media term! Lampshading. Where you make a joke and then the writer calls out the fact the joke sucks or places the spotlight on the fact the joke is a joke. There's a great Overly Sarcastic production video on it.
OPLA was my intro to One Piece, I'm now caught up on the anime. I showed the Live Action to my parents and my siblings over the holiday seasons and they all wanted more!
If Sonic the Hedgehog, Rocket Raccoon, and Pokemon could be made convincably well in live action, then Chopper is doable too. The actual issue finding a good voice actor/actor and of course budget.
They're probably gonna take Jamie Lee Curtis as Dr. Kureha and the dub voice actor for Chopper since I heard they're friends and want to get into the live action.
@@dfqgoing_on6899I doubt Chopper casting would really be too bad, considering that they used all of the original Japanese VAs for the Japanese dub. And Jamie Lee Curtis REALLY wants to play Dr. Kureha, so I doubt they'd have to try super hard to persuade her

Before it came out, I was only discussing it online among the One Piece manga community who were anywhere from downright mad the LA exist to optimistically skeptical. After it came out, I enjoyed it but I had doubt about some changes and a few nitpicks. It was only after I watched non-anime watchers react to it on youtube, I realized how well the Live Action did.
The best part of the One Piece Live action is its ability to get non anime watchers into One piece. Or my buddy who was just put off by the number fo anime eppisodes. He loved the LA and now hes watchiing the anime cause hes hooked.
If I remember correctly the Death Note series was reported to be planned by the guys who made Stranger Things, so I have faith that they could both nail the shinigami designs and nail the thriller kind of aspect of the show as a whole.
I can say myself, I always looked at one piece incredibly intimidated by the size of the show. Having the live action which is just 8 episodes gave me a very enjoyable taste of One Piece, I very much enjoy it, and am now interested in seeing what the Anime is like because I wanna see more.
I think reading is less intimidating 1000+ chapters sounds a lot but it isnt that much tbh, you can read a chapter in 5 minutes so even fi you take things slow you can still catch up in a few weeks pretty easily
I would always recommend reading/watching to enjoy, not to complete. One Piece especially is built to be well digested in parts, enjoying arcs one at a time.
It’s never made sense to me that people find lots of episodes intimidating. Either you won’t like it and stop watching which means you don’t have to worry about how many episodes there are, or you enjoy it and are luck you still have hundreds of episodes to enjoy. But I guess now you skipped the first 50 episodes that you can just breeze through the next 1000?
@@royalfun1031 also that, if somebody likes the 8 episodes of the live action what makes them think they will like the following 1000 episodes that have a very different tone and characterisation.
I watched the Netflix show first and I thought it was fun and good. I wanted to see more. I watched the first 70 episodes of the anime and I noticed where they changed characters and plot points and I must say they have done a great job. If you are only able to make 8 episodes then they picked the right stories to focus on and the characters that were left out or changed also felt like they made the right choice
Actually filming on first season took almost 2 years, not 3 or 4 like you guys said xd the preparation for everything lasted for a long time but actual filming took them around 18 months
Okay as a person who never watched the anime or read the manga, I felt I missed out while watching the one piece live action.. I loved all the characters and I felt it was really flipping good and I was really into it, In fact It was SOO GOOD my entire family sat down and watched the show with me.
I for a long time said I wasn't going to start One Piece until it was done. With it already having so many hundreds of episodes by the time I even just knew of it's existence, initially it just seemed daunting, and then I didn't want to watch that much and get caught up to then have to wait for new episodes. However, when the live action came out and I saw people who had never seen the anime or read the manga really into it, I thought I'd give it a shot. It was only 8 episodes, after all. Then I was obsessed with it. I loved all the characters and their backstories and the absurdity that was played in all seriousness. Very shortly after finishing it I finally decided to watch the anime, and now in less than two weeks I'm 170 episodes in, and I know plenty of other people are the same way.
That stuck out to me, too. But I had to remind myself that children who move to a different country adapt and change their accent, so that can easily be explained in the show.
If they ever get to that point, having Dadan be played by a Mexican actress and just be a Mexican mom (completes with the chancla) to the three kids might be a way to explain it. Sabo would've left early, so his accent can be whatever since the Revolutionary Army is very diverse. Most likely he'll be British Ace will probably also be South American (I think Oda said he's Portuguese), but he also spent more time at sea than Luffy, amongst the very diverse White Beard pirates, so they could go either way
yeah just chalk that up to limited child acting abilities. Child Sanji didn't have grown up Sanjis accent either but that wasn't as jarring coz at least it was still a British one, just not the exact specific British one and honestly i doubt anyone unfamiliar with British dialects even noticed.
After watching the show with my wife and my parents, who are in their 50's, they're very interested in watching the anime. At the very least, the live action show is a great way to ease people into the anime or manga
My parents are not interested in any anime whatsoever but, they freaking loved the One Piece Live action. Even made my mom rewatch the Arlong Park Arc in the anime.
The overall process of making the show took 6 years but filming took around a year or so. The producers believe it'll take 16-18 months to actually finish Season 2 completely.
I seen a couple episodes of the anime when I was kid like 17 years ago and thought it was boring as hell and the power systems with the fruits were stupid. I watched the Netflix show and absolutely loved it. Hearing them all constantly talk about their dreams made me cry and remember what it was like to be a kid again. After I finished the show I started up the anime and am almost to episode 100 now. I still dislike a lot of the anime. But it’s also really enjoyable.
How do you like the pacing of the anime? I read a lot further than I watched the anime when I was a kid and my subsequent attempts to catch up failed because of the pacing early on.
People complaining some things were changed "by Netflix" I think forgot that Oda was a writer for the show too. You really think that after 20+ years he doesn't have any regrets on how he wrote some stuff, doesn't want to make changes?
I'm an anime fan but never watched One Piece. At first I wasn't sure, but I've slowly seen its virtues and am surprised by how much I like it, just not as an anime fan. As a 90s kid, I slowly find myself seeing it as if it were a prequal within the Hook universe. The slightly janky but colourful set pieces, exagerrated characters and costumes, the Luffie actor imbues the energy of a young Robin Williams Peter Pan, and Garp carries the presence of Hoffman's Hook (the sense of disturbing a family accord, also taking an ally of the protagonist under their wing - Peter's son for Hook, and Koby for Luffie). Zoro also plays off of Luffie like Rufio does Peter. You can feel the creative ways they've tried to realise such a colourful world with the modest means of our reality, and it's charming. Also, there's plenty pirating. As a millenial with a lot of nostalgic attachment to Hook, I just love all that.
I think the live stage prop stance was the most accurate way to explain the feel of this show, it's 100% like you're watching a play of the anime and tbh they executed it perfectly. I could never get into the anime cause I am not a fan of the animation or art style, but the show did a great job with it
This show had a low budget when you compare it to other contemporary streaming shows. They did decent and I can only see them getting better as long as they get bigger budgets, maybe we'll see an alternate story direction based from one of the prior times Oda thought of ending it. Also the anime was paced really well early on until it started getting into marinford saga, sadly.
Uhhh, it had a higher budget per episode than Game of Thrones ever did. What on earth are we comparing it to where we can say "low budget"?? All the Marvel stuff? Rings of Power? The vast majority of streaming shows are not as expensive as One Piece was, everything above it is either Disney or Apple money.
@@jazzycat8917 disney, apple, discovery/wb, and amazon are netflix's competitors why wouldn't I compare them? maybe I should've specified that I'm talking about flagship shows and not the totality. those companies spend ridiculous money that most shows can't compare to, but they're making it a norm.
The one thing I think is that it kind of crams later stuff with characters like garp because it’s eager to drop that bombshell cause the character is cool rather than letting the story speak for itself because it is afraid there won’t be later seasons. East blue is the hardest sell in the one piece experience (especially syrup village) but the build up to the walk to arlong park is one of the best moments
I think, dare I be so bold to say this, One Piece (live action) will be the video series (show/movie) of the 20s. We had Harry Potter for the 2000s, MCU for the 10s, and (skipping over 2020 and 2021 from the pandemic) I think OP will be the main video series for the next decade to come.
@@ceshmate1953 I'm talking about what will be the best video (show/movie) from the 20s, which hasn't happened just yet since were in the 20s. While comparing it to what I would believe were the most popular HP in the 2000s, and the MCU in the 10s. My argument here is that OP will take the spot for the best and most popular video (show/movie) for this decade, not best show or movie that had just a couple years and a few season like whatever other shows or movies might have, I'm referring to the entire next 8-10ish years and what video (show/movie) stands out the most during that time by being the best and most popular.
I would still credit Alice in Borderland for starting the trend of great live action adaptations. Although Japan has been nailing Shoujo Manga live action adaptations for many years. There was also Burn the House Down on Netflix this year which was an adaptation of a Josei manga.
Yea Connor is definitely wrong I've had family and friends who've both never watched one piece and never watched anime in general who watched this loved it and are now watching the whole anime.
my 71 year old dad AND my 73 year old mom LOVE one piece live action and they even got my uncles and aunt's into watching it and its a absolute hit they all cant wait for season 2 the normies love it from my view
Considering the series spans 25+ years and is STILL a good ways away from any kind of conclusion, the only feasible moves the live-action has going forward is to have a hard exit strategy (to stop at a major point in the series and nudge fans towards the OVAs, anime, and manga), or power through to the major events and then work with TOEI to figure a way to fill in the gaps. I kinda hope it's the former, because it's always better to leave on top, than risk an unsatisfying conclusion (or no conclusion at all).

This is so cute and cool that you got to enjoy this show with your grandma!

love to know more.

It kinda makes it look like his strongest style and allows them to not have it in every fight as three sword would very goofy in real life, while two sword style had such good choreography
yeah LA zoro use 3 swords mainly for finishing moves at maybe like 20% of the time while in anime & manga he use 3 swords like at least 70% of the time
Ya I agree, 3 sword would look goofy af aside from finishers in live action. Anime/manga let you get away with it more than live action would.
Watch it, or don't."
I see characters like Merry who styled himself like a ram, or that one navy who has a mouse ears hat and whiskers, and was pleasantly surprised to see everyone taking them seriously, with no character taking cheap digs at their appearance. Really allows me to be more immersed and just go "Yep, this is probably just a normal thing in this crazy fantasy world."

Or like a Yoda puppet. It's gonna be cheaper with less odds of looking completely shit.
It's definitely gonna be pretty expensive to do chopper. He's definitely gonna have a lot of cut screentime.
i think they should just make chopper a kid with deerlike features like his horn and blue nose but make sure hes cute cos his personality is mostly like a kid anyways so why not make him one and most of his dynamics and interaction with everyone will be like in the manga if hes a kid its also cheaper and they dont need to sacrifice his screentime to fleshout more about his character. also goda himself said he made chopper cute cos of his voice actor so why not go full cute on him lol..

The animatronic Bobby in Sweet Tooth looks lile a good way to tackle Chopper as well. A mix of animatronic/puppet and vfx to add that oomph.

I think the secret to a successful adaptation is simple, have the original writer come on board with a veto right on what needs to change and what needs to be left untouched...
It works mostly, Oda managed to veto most things except Garp, when he vetoed that
That triggered Steven Maida's ego as seen in a screen rants extra interview and he kept pressuring him to include it until he caved
And now we have 100min of his ego on screen, Garp being where he wasn't wanted by the creator and that cracked large portions of Sanji's Amazing Arc from a 10/10 to a 7/10 with the backstory still 10.

Yeah I wonder how many devil fruit users and weird powered characters in the Alabasta saga will just end up cut entirely from the show
I’m a One Piece fan, but my girlfriend had no desire to get into it.
Agreed.
They could just make it an international school set in Japan, even Japan has those.
Oh. I never watched or read it. But it always seemed heavily inspired by American comics. This sounds like another thing they possibly got from there. Sounds interesting.
And people have blue hair. Just say quirks make peopl look different. And the west has a lot of Asian actors
They need @RivenX3i to work on it. He made a conceptual spin-off of MHA that went viral a few years ago.

Meanwhile with the live action, even my aunt and grandma watched it and liked it.
the fact that my mom caught a glimpse of the show and said "I've seen this kid somewhere. Why does he look like a cartoon??". I thought she meant she's seen Iñaki online or something, but no, SHE MEANT LUFFY just she didn't realize it was an adaptation of the anime I've been yapping about. So the fact that she recognized him immediately without even knowing one piece got me flabbergasted
That’s unfortunate as the writing and changes were probably the weakest part of the whole series

"A funny pirate show" and this is why OPLA is such an hit with normies.

The actual issue finding a good voice actor/actor and of course budget.
they could just take the anime dub actor for chopper...i think chopper sounded great in the dub

I for a long time said I wasn't going to start One Piece until it was done. With it already having so many hundreds of episodes by the time I even just knew of it's existence, initially it just seemed daunting, and then I didn't want to watch that much and get caught up to then have to wait for new episodes.

Really enjoyed it Though it was a bit weird that child Luffy had a US accent and adult Luffy had a Mexican accent.
That stuck out to me, too. But I had to remind myself that children who move to a different country adapt and change their accent, so that can easily be explained in the show.
I'm a little daft so maybe I'm not a good example but I seriously didn't notice it until people commented it😂
If they ever get to that point, having Dadan be played by a Mexican actress and just be a Mexican mom (completes with the chancla) to the three kids might be a way to explain it.
Sabo would've left early, so his accent can be whatever since the Revolutionary Army is very diverse. Most likely he'll be British
Ace will probably also be South American (I think Oda said he's Portuguese), but he also spent more time at sea than Luffy, amongst the very diverse White Beard pirates, so they could go either way
yeah just chalk that up to limited child acting abilities. Child Sanji didn't have grown up Sanjis accent either but that wasn't as jarring coz at least it was still a British one, just not the exact specific British one and honestly i doubt anyone unfamiliar with British dialects even noticed.

The one thing I think is that it kind of crams later stuff with characters like garp because it’s eager to drop that bombshell cause the character is cool rather than letting the story speak for itself because it is afraid there won’t be later seasons.
