I think when Usopp's Haki Awakens , its not Haki but it devil fruit powers.

What I find the most fascinating about Usopp is that he's the only member of the crew who has actually reached his goal even if he himself isn't aware of it. He wants to be a brave warrior of the sea, bravery isn't the same as being fearless, bravery is FACING YOUR FEARS and Usopp does that every single time to clutch for his crew. Imho Usopp already is a brave warrior of the sea even if he doesn't know it.

A part of it is that Usopp's goal isn't as material (not using this word in the cars and money kind of materialistic, I just mean tangible) as the others, his goal is an ideal, he can keep aiming for the ideal forever every day.

Except this is exactly why Usopp has yet to achieve his dream. See, his whole character is about his own insecurities and he can only achieve his dreams when he himself believes he is a brave warrior of the sea. He needs to learn to accept himself for who he is. We see this part way with Peronna when instead of becoming confident and positive, he embraces his own negativity and cowardice, which leads him to being cautious and strategic. But he has yet to fully accept his value and his bravery. We see this in his reaction when people started calling him god Usopp, he clearly doesn't believe in that title nor any other titles he has given himself in his lies. He needs to genuinely regard himself highly without it being a lie for his dream to be achieved.

"The biggest lie that Usopp's telling is that he's a coward" Holy shit, I love this line so much because it's so true. Usopp Is the bravest character in the entire series but his lack of self confidence prevents him from seeing himself objectively, so he lies to everyone and he lies to himself that he's a coward because he can't see past the fear he has when he's staring down absolute monsters and see how brave he is for fighting them anyways.

Usopp's sheer will is even proven in the Wano arc, when some fodders are trying to attack Usopp, Big Mom sends out some Conqueror's Haki nearby, which instantly knocks out those mooks and even startles a gator smile fruit user. But Usopp? He doesn't even flinch or bat an eye, seldom faint. He's just wondering "What was that?" and when he realises he immediately starts using it to his advantage, saying that he used the Haki, and honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if he actually could use Conqueror's, he can already use Observation Haki unconsciously though. He was even brave enough to object against Luffy who wanted to replace Merry, their friend, with some other ship, and even left the crew for a while, becoming Sogeking to help the others save Robin. What a living legend, who turns his big lies into bigger truths.

    • @heek8964

@@obeseoverlold There's actually a very cool theory that Usopp has had conquerors for a while. Every time Usopp beats someone by scaring them (Ms.Merry christmas, Perona, Sugar, etc) they foam at the mouth just like when someone is knocked out with conquerors. Someone is knocked out by conquerors not when their significantly physically weaker but when their willpower is significantly weaker. However due to his low self confidence he needs to weaken his opponents willpower, convince them of his overwhelming strength, trick them into beliving there's that overwhelming strength gap that there normally is in conquerors haki, and in turn giving up their will to fight and leaving themselves vulnerable to his weak conquerors haki. There's also an idea that in the moment Usopp buys his own hype, convinces himself he's lifting a 10 ton hammer, and that boost to his confidence also strengthens his conquerors haki.

The fight with Perona was also a great display of Usopp's emotional maturity because he was the only one who could push through his negative thoughts, something even Luffy couldn't. Luffy can do things nobody else does because he never really has doubt in his abilities, which is another reason why he was so emotionally crushed after Marineford. Usopp on the other hand almost always severely doubts wether or not he will succeed, but even so he keeps trying, and more often than not, he pushes through.

He's not even like Batman with the whole "I don't have powers, but I basically do because I'm better than everyone at pretty much everything" schtick. Ussop is literally bringing a slingshot to an arms race that escalated to nukes, and he still manages to be the one who comes in clutch. I almost don't want him to get any stronger. Usopp has been the strawhat hurt the most by the rampant rise in powerscaling/power fantasy parts of teh fandom the most. His greatest strengths as a character has always been what he does in the events AROUND the battle rather than the battles themselves. I'm so happy you touched on his connection to the idea of being "average" within the the crazy world of One Piece. It's a routine thing not only in one Piece but in many battle focused series that people tend to lean towards and favor the stronger, more flashy, more powerful characters because they embody the things we want to see/be in these types of worlds. Ironically enough the hate towards him is fueled more by a breaking of fantasy with a dose of reality than it does with anything to do with his character being actually "annoying". I've found most people who don't like Usopp play a lot of comparisons rather than actually discussing aspects they don't like about him, and the aspects they can mention are overplayed and casted over the strengths of them.
I find his comedy to be some of the best. It's goofy, fun, and lighthearted, not to mention it often comes back in unique ways (insert Prophet Usopp joke here). His fights in early one piece are some of the most interesting because he actually uses a mixture of mundane and everyday items with things he manages to either make, learn how to use, or both. Mix that with the creative ways he uses them alongside his lies and bluffs end up creating some of the greatest set ups and finales to fights I've seen. And of course, as you touched on so incredibly, he grounds and keeps the crew together. He acts as a sort of support to the crew, helping in all the little small things no one else can do. The type of small things that most people look over in fact. He was the one who made their Jolly Roger, he helped keep the Marry afloat and was the one who assisted in the upkeep of everything. His biggest moments in every arc are when he helps get the strawhats that finale big swing for the finale or helps them achieve their current goal. But, that's not the big, crazy, punch battle spectacle most fans look for.
I find it heartbreaking whenever I hear people saying they hated Usopp during water 7 because of his conflict with Luffy, because it means they missed teh core part of his struggle and a major point of the crew, they're a family. Everyone here isn't just there for a job or a niche, as you said. They're here because they uplift each other. The connection you made with Sanji, especially given your previous analysis of him as a character, works so well into hammering this home. They need each other not because they're useful for one benign reason or another, but because they care and love for each other and the shared hardships they've been through together. Whether it's the trauma they each have in their past, to the challenges they face in the future. They stick together, because they know they wouldn't be here without each other. There's a whole lot more I'd love to talk about but this is starting to become a small essay already. So for now, I'll leave this with a thank you for another amazing video! I've been really enjoying your content and even been looking into your older stuff too! I really appreciate the hard work you put into these and hope you keep it up! What I love about One Piece is that the characters feel so real. Usopp in particular. Him lacking confidence does not get solved in one battle where he shows up, but it is a slow progression of constantly having to show up, push himself out of him comfort zone and getting more and more confident in doing so.
I also see people mention how Usopp didnt develop as a character because he ran away from sugar & trebol in Dressrosa, but this was his bravest moment yet !! He jumped into action, fully aware that he would probably die, to save some strangers he meet 3 hours ago & people still call him a coward because he hesitated before doing so. Usopps will never be someone to blindly jump into action like Luffy is. Every battle Usopp faces is also a battle with himself, he fights with so little self believe that he managed to make the negative hollow from perona depressed, yet he still fights. I just really love him

Something that I use for my defense of Usopp is that he’s a long ranged fighter that gets put up in close ranged fights early on most of the time. It makes sense for him to panic because obviously a sniper shouldn’t be on the front line of battle. Adding to the fact that most of the enemies in one piece have incredibly powerful devil fruits and levels of haki, I think Usopps fear is pretty justified. He’s physically a normal human that thrives best on the back of the battlefield.

Usopp already got lot of followers in Dressrosa and 2 giant followers in Ennys Lobby, and it is probably going to expand as the manga reaches Elbaf. It is going to be a cliche, but I really hope that Oda presents us with a scene, on the world war against the world governement, where Usopp yells "BEWARE MY 8 THOUSAND FOLLOWERS" and then 8000 followers shows up to fight with the King of Snipers.

Usopp if far from normal he does superhuman feats all the time in one piece. I also think you can aspire to be like any straw hat. They all believe in their dreams and work hard to achieve them. There are two things you didn't mention:
    1) Yassop sailed with Shanks for a while before Usopp was born. Meaning that he's the symbol of his and Banchina's continued love and relationship. Of course there's no ill will from her. She knows and understands the choice he made and imparts both onto Usopp. At least indirectly. Of course he can't help but admire this myth of A Man.
    2) Back in Arlong Park, there's this moment where Luffy tells Arlong that his crew do what he can't. And for Usopp, that is to lie. He overhears this, still sticking around after "running away," but that only helps to make the point we saw in Syrup Village. Usopp lies to himself and others to do what he does end up doing. But he doesn't truly believe in them. Probably due to the deep-rooted abandonment issues he still developed despite admiring the cause of them.
He's the polar opposite to Luffy in this regard. Who didn't know, or even considered, that he had a father who left him behind. To whom the very concept of lying, be it to himself or others, is foreign. For Luffy, there's only doing, his immense self-confidence built from the ridiculous trials Garp imposed on him and wanting to fulfil his dream and (then) two promises. Which only makes his wavering in his fight against Lucci and the encouragement he got from Usopp all the more powerful. There was no lie there, only truth. And we see that on full display with the Mask of Sogeking gone.
Thinking a bit more on father figures in One Piece, I'm curious about your take on the importance of A Father in the story. You always mention them when they come up, but I do believe that there's a larger thread to be had. Especially since they are the most important to the male characters. Which isn't to forget Vivi, Lola or Chiffon, but those, alongside Yamato whom we can debate a bit for either, are the exception. With Vivi being the exception even among them. There's a lot to be examined about Fatherhood in this story.

Usopp is SO underrated in Punk Hazard. Getting all of Cesar's underlings on their side was no small feat and it's the first time any Straw Hat declares that yes, Luffy will be King of the Pirates. Also, Bon Clay played a similar role in Impel Down (cowardly, still rooting for Luffy, and getting allies to also root for Luffy) and it's worth noting that people loved that character arc for them, but when it's Usopp suddenly no one can read. Usopp has so many people convinced he's useless, and that couldn't be further from the truth. But even if he were useless, the Straw Hats love him and that's all that matters. I hope we see him use Haki again. I literally cheered when he made that shot.

Before Jinbe joined, Usopp was my favorite Straw Hat. The fight with Luffy and that whole "I'm already Negative" line hit me in the gut in a way I never realized I understood and suddenly a lot of things about me made sense. I often feel like I'm worthless, that I'm not as smart as my younger siblings, that I have no real talent, that everything people say they like about me is just a result of the false persona I put on just to get through the day with as little problems as possible. But there are people that have seen under that mask and like what they see, I'm not stupid, if anything my merely admitting I don't know as much as I want is a good sign I still have so much potential for learning, and I do have an amazing talent, I just don't have ways of using it for making money. Here was Usopp continuing to try his darndest even though he was clearly out of his league and he beat those challenges each time. He was the most human member of the crew and the most relatable. I love this guy so much I actually have a SogeKing costume that I wore to a con once. He inspires me to keep trying in spite of everything the world tries to do to keep me down. I'm not the worthless teammate. I am the heart and the storyteller. I can meet any challenge with my friends by my side. And things will get better.

Personally one of Usopp's Dynamics/relationships that I like the most is with Franky (he's quite underrated and I hope Oda will explore it further or cover more). How their relationship begins and how it evolves taking into account that Usopp does with Franky what he should do with his father; they work together (Franky has a high opinion of Udopp's abilities), often compete in sniping (this has been seen in the movies).

Even before the Going Merry fiasco, in Arlong park when Luffy is listing why he needs others to achieve his dreams, he tell "that's why a have swordmans, a cook, a navigator and a liar". Of course for Luffy this skill is as much as important as the others (kind of how Sanji "bad traits" is what Luffy finds best). This is played as a comedic moment, specially by Ussop, but Luffy was really serious about how Ussop lies are as important as the others rôles. But imagine how Ussop felt to be the liar of the crew and being compared to Swordman, Cook, Navigator... No Wonder it all boiled down at Water 7, but in every arc since his introduction Ussop usefullness is put through the test, in his regards

While Usopp definitely has importance, like when it comes to needing, y’know, sniping skills, the main point is that Usopp doesn’t necessarily need to be strong for the crew to like him. Luffy was more than willing to invite the tree guy from thriller bark cuz he looked cool. What matters is their bonds. The fact that the whole crew just so happens to be strong is cuz of story convenience. Like how there just so happens to be enough high ranking goons beneath the arc’s main bad guy to give each crew member a fight

Thank you for sharing your amazing thoughts about Usopp and also scolding people for hating on him. It's okay to hate a character or a flaw in that character, but honestly, for hating him for not understanding how complex he is - it's sad and wrong.
I never saw Usopp as a coward. For me, he was always a brave man, a great friend and he's really smart too. To me, him running away or trembling with fear, stems from his insecurities and anxiety. He's one of my favorite Straw Hat, because he is so cool. Usopp is the sniper and a sniper is a supporter, so of course he's never going to be as strong as the monster trio. That is not who he is. However, without him, the crew would be missing a strong member. His strength is in his skills as s sniper, his intelligence and creativity. He creates Nami's weapon, it gets better and better each time, because he learns more about her strength and needs. Usopp pays attention to details, he knows what the crew needs and when.
Yes, he might run away at first, but when it comes down to it, he steps up and fights. He fears doing so, he's terrified to fight strong opponents, but not because he doesn't have the skills or strength to do so, but because he lacks the confidence in himself to believe that he truly can do this. Instead, he pulls out another strength. His desire to be there for the crew, to protect them and to show them that they can rely on him when needed.
He's really a great and well written character. Best of all, he's so relatable too.

There is something I learned a long time ago, and that is, one is braver than anyone when you are scared shtless but do the thing anyway. And Usopp does it constantly, every arc, all the time. He is relatable but also one of the most human parts of the crew. And probably the bravest one among them just for the fact that he is always scared but never backs down. He knows he's more vulnerable, he's physically weaker, he's not a "monster" but he will still stand up, crying or whatever, but he will stand up and fight anyway.

One thing that always got me about the apology scene--specifically in the manga--is when Usopp apologizes, among the reaction panels of the Straw Hats, Zoro is the only one visibly smiling. That could be interpreted as a simple "Zoro is being smug because he feels like he was right" but I think not only is that a very un-Zoro like interpretation, it reaches deeper and farther back into Zoro and Usopp's relationship.
Before Water Seven, there are multiple instances of Usopp briefly vocalizing his feelings of inadequacy to Zoro, and only Zoro. One instance I can recall off the top of my head is the moment in Skypeia after the crew comes back to the Merry having been attacked. Usopp laments that he was incapable of doing anything about it and we get some reaction panels of Zoro listening to him airing his woes before--in typical Zoro fashion--he tells him to just shut up and go to sleep. Zoro as a very emotionally mature character who also has trouble showing his feelings must have internalized all this about Usopp, yet still treated him rather harshly during Water Seven, most likely as a form of tough love. It's probably one of the many reasons he remained so stoic during Luffy and Usopp's arguing and fighting; he fully understands Usopp's self-esteem issues.
It's why I think Zoro's stubbornness about not letting Usopp back into the crew was because--after everything they had been through--he truly did believe in Usopp's ability to tap into his courage and inner strength when the chips were down. Therefore, Zoro believed in Usopp's ability to nut up and apologize if he was pushed to do so, and I think Zoro's smile proves that wholesale.

One basic concept A LOT of people fail to grasp, and that Usopp embodies, is that bravery is not the absence of fear, but the will to overcome it. Luffy is basically fearless (except for his immense fear of losing those he loves), and Usopp is extremely fearful. Yet we see them standing side by side against overwhelming odds constantly. Who is the one showing bravery there? The one who has no fear, or the one that despite being afraid stands against the same foes?

Usopp is the kind of character really enjoy to see in media and like to play in Pen and paper RPGs - the average guy among the hyper capable monsters, who distinguishes himself by preparation and creative use of tools and gadgets- like some kind of discount batman!

It just struck me, that there might've been another Straw Hat that could battle Perona in Thriller Bark, and her name is Robin.
Also, Zoro failed to play Usopp right after he said he never prayed to God. How ironic.
Love your content, keep up great work!

Maybe before Enies Lobby. But seeing how much she’s loved and what they went through for her, I doubt it. She feels loved now and realizes she isn’t alone anymore.

I think negative hollow affects people who have self worth and belief in themselves which Robin has I mean she was ALONE for 28 years and survived everything. As melontree said Robin's enemy is the world but ussop's enemy is himself

@@sakshiiii1270 yeah that's why I think Robin would be powerless against Perona

I've never clicked a video so fast! I love Usopp sm!😭💖
I didn't know there were so many people that didn't like him tho. Usopp is a very relatable Straw Hat imo. I've liked him from the beginning because I could relate to his character in a way. Basically because misunderstood and believing in not being worth the effort. He has done a lot for the Straw Hats and people overlook that because they're still stuck on him being a coward and a lair. Bffr, half the people saying that wouldn't have the balls to go through such lengths Usopp has. I know I sure as hell don't. Water7 had me in tears because relatably so, I have done horrible things to friends I love and was too afraid you apologize because I'd think they hated me. Usopp just hits more than the others because I see a lot of myself in his character

    Aesop's Fables
    Usopp's Fables
    Stories that were untrue
    versus
    Stories that "were..." untrue...
"we learned [you can't please everyone/Lions need teeth/doctors that steal from you don't restore your sight/the squeaky wheel gets the grease/if you can't lick from plate fill a vase/THOSE GRAPES WERE FREAKING SOUR ANYWAY]"

Hell yeah, Usopp is my favorite character so I really enjoyed watching this in depth look at his character. It drives me crazy to see him so constantly belittled in the fandom! Great vid!

I think the red hair pirates will be a huge “don’t meet your heroes” story. Luffy will see shanks as an adult in a more realistic light and ussop will see his dad for the asshole he really is.

I'd upvote this a million times if i could, and I'm only 3 mins in. Usopp is one of my faves. Not my top fave, but he's had a lot of good character building and more useful and dependable than ppl rag on him for.
Like sure he runs away comedically, but when it comes down to it he is dependable and does what he needs to, not just for his crew and captain, but for himself!

My only complaint is that the narrative doesn't always give him a lot of chances to snipe. Which is like, his whole deal.
You'd think they'd have more sea battles where that might happen or something.
I just want MORE Ussop. And Nami for that matter.

There is something I always say to people who complain about Usopp being a "coward". And it's that he just flat out isn't. He is not a coward. A coward wouldn't risk his life for people who hate him. A coward wouldn't stand up to a man he admires over a big difference in opinion and belief. A coward wouldn't valiantly stand by and fight for a man who challanges the entire world and the strongest monsters in it to an open fight. A coward wouldn't face his fears despite how justified they may be. A coward wouldn't risk a fate worse than death for the ideals of his captain. Usopp is not a coward. Usopp is a man who has fears and expresses them. He is a man who faces horrors and terrifying scenario after terrifying scenario and while he does buckle, he does not break. Usopp is god damn aspirational. As a truly brave man once said: "Bravery isn't the absence of fear. It's having the fear and finding a way to work through it." And by that logic Usopp may be the bravest member of the entire Strawhats.

I never really liked Usopp, but your video helped me understand him better and I've found a new appreciation for the character :D! With Sanji it was easy because he was already my absolute favorite so I was just eating up all you were saying about him. But with Usopp I was not convinced, so well done! Really well written video and a great character study!
