    I've just recently became a workshop addict myself. I finally decided to grab a soldering gun for various automotive projects and hit youtube for some tips. I came across your video and thought it was excellent, primarily because you wasted relatively little time and got to the core of your instruction. Well done. I'm better off now because this. Cheers.

    I needed to solder some wires and didn't know how or what to use. Ran across your video and it was PERFECT. VERY informative on what to use and how to do it. THANK YOU

    Good intro to soldering irons. Ive been working on commercial aircraft wiring and avionics for over 30 years and all of our terminations and splices are mechanically crimped due to high vibration and variations in temperature. I will add that our terminations(lugs, splices, connector contacts) are crimped with calibrated tools and are very specific as to not over crimp(metal fatigue) or under crimp because you do not want an electrical failure on an aircraft in flight

    Lots of different opinions and methods for connecting wires...I feel it is better to get a mechanical connection prior to soldering. That means twisting your wires together prior to soldering. I also have had good luck crimping using adhesive lined shrink tubed butt connectors. Keep in mind that most of my wiring is done on my Harley's and it has to be vibration and weather proof.

    Yes, I hate crimping too! I think its because I use to work building sports and Racing cars and that is where you notice crimping connection vibrate loose or corrosion gets in and causes issues. I have not worked on cars for years now and I play with old Radiograms tvs for fun ,but i still do not use crimping much. Good video you made for People!

    Thanks for the great video !
    I was confused as to when you applied heat to the solder gun (did you press the button/trigger on the gun and for how long before trying to solder). Why did you use the heat gun for this job ?
    Seems to me that the actual solder operation would be better when the shrink-wrap is applied to one end before joining the 2 wires.

    Yes, I have questions: do you touch the gun to the solder or the wire? 2: I need to to fix wires in a sewing machine. I. Not going to be using this thing all the time. A sewing machine repair person recommends an iron that heats to 500c. Is this necessary? Don't want to spend $200 to fix 3 wires. Thanks.

    I just bought a Weller soldering gun, I will be doing some automotive but mostly soldering wires for headphone and speakers. Would I be better off with a soldering iron station or should I be fine?

    • @WorkshopAddict
      @WorkshopAddict  7 років тому +1

      I have a small weller for automotive. IMHO, rig up a small station your self to hold the wires. some alligator clamps can help give you the third hand that you need.

    • @treadmillrepair754
      @treadmillrepair754 7 років тому +1

      Weller gun is the best option for soldering wires, I am in electronics and I use a Hakko FX888d for the boards but the Weller gun is indispensable for many things.
      Cheers.

    8:10 "...much better joint than..." - disagree. Opposite. Its not recommended to solder wire connections in most of cases. Because soldering makes the wire rigid. Makes it very fragile, soldered wires break very easily from agitation, movement. Its a very common and frequent source of the electrical device's failure. The crimping needs more practice, more experience, but the connection lasts much-much longer than a soldered wire connection. Usually you won't see soldered wire connections in a professional quality device, only "cheap" crimped things, and this is the reason.

    Hi there, just quickly writing to say thank you for having a chance to watch a demonstration of tools at a bench. I am just learning here about the internet and UA-cam. I physically spend time between America and Canada and for some reason I think that technology for a bench that is available on the American market may be a little bit different than the technology that is available on the Canada market even though much of it is made in China and then sent bacl over here, as far as I know. I guess, and I do not mean to put a point to much forward, that could be something that could be taught in school. I do not want to say "should be taught in school" because that may be a little bit to commanding or dictatorial or something like that... In other words not very democratic or sort of unAmerican. That is the end of my wordy rant.💲

    Can u just use a paper clip instead of that wire

    • @FusionDeveloper
      @FusionDeveloper 8 років тому +2

      +alonzo Coston a paperclip maybe as a soldering tip, but not as soldering wire, because the metal in a paperclip, will not liquify at that temp and if you manage to get it hot enough to liquify, it will be glowing white and be molten and will destroy what you are working on. The purpose of official solder wire, is that it melts at a low temperature and it cools off fast.

    I highly recommend lead-free solder! It may not be as great as the normal solder, but it's worth it! It's way better for your health, and it's not worth risking your health with normal solder!

      I find if you use a soldering gun then your burn won't even show on your skin if you burn yourself while the button isn't being pressed down which is probably the most likely scenario if you have a gun one but a soldering iron is always heated up all the way for the most part so maybe yes if you have a soldering iron
