I find it very interesting that Million Dollar Man Ted's (slave) bodyguard's name was Virgil, and that was taking a dig at Dusty Rhode, who's real name was Virgil. Dusty was also known as "the comman man." So symbolically, the story line is how the comman man became a slave of the wealthy and corrupt. Dusty was also known as "The American Dream," while Ted's finisher was the Million Dollar Dream. There were definitely symbolic themes running through those 3 characters.

In the 14th Century that term actually was used for slaves who ranked slightly higher than the regular working slaves, but were slaves nontheless. It's idiotic to think anything else.

Virgil was never a slave. It's almost racist to say that he was. Hercules was the slave.
