Today we take a visit to our local feed mill where they mill our pastured pig feed for our farm. We talk about the ingredients and the ration that is milled to help grow our pigs big and healthy so they are ready to go to market at 6-7 months old.
Our pastured pigs are out on pasture but they do receive a regular ration that helps them put on weight and muscle quickly so they can be processed. Pastured pigs are a great option for beginning farmers or anyone who wants to raise their own food on a homestead. If you are homesteading we would highly recommend raising pigs on pasture and especially raising pigs outdoors.
The mill we visit is an old feed mill located in central North Carolina that has been in business for around 125 years. They custom grind animal feed for local farms and farmers helping them to raise animals right using locally sourced feed ingredients. Julian Milling Company is a very cool place and is like stepping back in time.

@@SheratonParkFarms a little town with 1 blinking light called Cove City. About halfway between New Bern and Kingston. I’m excited for pigs. We’re on wooded property and I think they’ll enjoy it!
We used ground corn and barley and would mix in 5 gallons buckets of water and would let it ferment in summer in the gainery winter woul keep beside out wood heater for house had enough buckets that would soak 48 hrs in the winter house smelled loke brewery LOL plus whatever vegetable scraps

That’s really neat. I use Bartlett feed for my goats and it’s good stuff.
We use their poultry feed for all our birds. It is good stuff.

We are in the 14-16% range. Everyone gets the same thing. Just easier that way.
What do you finish them on, or do you use this mix to finish as well?
Hey Chuck thanks for the video and thanks for sharing the recipe for the feed . Could I ask what you are getting a ton for . We have been buy pig feed by ton but our mill just recently has stopped producing feed . Kinda puts a in a bind. Thanks and keep those videos coming .
We pay $560 per ton. Sorry to hear about your mill. That makes it challenging.
Maybe you can get some other farmers together and start a co-op mill. I saw another farm do something similar, but it was with a farm supply store that closed. The farmers got together and reopened it as a co-op.
See if the co-op farmers can buy the feed mill that closed and the machinery in it at a discount, hire someone to run it, and the farmers in the co-op can split the profits, plus perhaps get feed at a discounted rate, below what other farmers who did not want to participate in the co-op would pay. It could be a good winter project.
I'm trying to stay away from soy. And limiting corn.

Soured oats and a couple others.
My mix is
50# whole oats(so what the dont eat can grow ,not what most people prefer)
3# black oil sunflower seeds
6 # corn
2 cups mineral
Then I sour that mix from day to day
Then I give them red apple (treats) and feed them regular protien(mainly chicken) from time to time as well as some duck weed about every day this time a year(about a pound of duckweed each)
Does grinding the gain down to a powder, really benefit the growth of the pigs to justify the added expense to grind it? I guess the pigs will digest it faster.
No GMO grain, I hope.

What is the cost of a 50 pound bag? I really like the idea of locally milled. But knowing what you are feeding your animals is priceless. I'm buying commercially right now but looking for an alternative. Thanks

Stuck with coop concentrate and corn for now. No local mills I know of around me.

Per 1 ton:
1200 lbs of corn
400 lbs of soybean meal
400 lbs of oats or wheat
50 lbs of mineral mix
What do you think about fermented feed for finishing pigs ?
Afraid I don’t have any experience in that subject. I would try it but we have too many animals for it to be efficient.

We add it just to be sure we are getting a good balanced feed. Not sure if they are getting everything they need so we just hedge our bets.

What could the soy beans be substituted for in your feed?
Sunflower meal, cottonseed (too much lysine for pigs as I understand it) not sure what else could be used.

I feed my pigs turkey feed, is that healthy or will it effect the meat badly?
Honestly, not sure. But it is probably fine. Most all animal feed is made from similar ingredients. If it’s all you have, go with it.

Feeder pigs get all they want. Gestating pigs get 5lb/day. Lactating sows get 15lb/day and boars get 5lbs/day.

Do you use non gmo feed ?
I do not. Too cost prohibitive.
i use to mix soy bean meal into my feed mix, buy my feed mix by the one ton tote bag, but i cut out the soy some years ago because of cost, it the most costly feed going, at $62 cnd per 50Lbs, were i can buy cracked corn ground barley at $10.50 per 50lb bag, and by the ton its 28% less, i mix in free chose 14 mineral mix as $34 cnd per 50lbs, both my pigs ans steers get the same feed, i tried using corn meal added to the mix but didnt see and added weight gain, i have the mix 1000Lbs of cracked corn and 1000Lbs of ground barley per one ton tote 2000Lbs, i dont know why soyo is so costly been it is all grown here, by buying by the ton i save 28% over baged feed, as your paying all that labor for a guy to stand there bagging it, we it takes then 10 min, to run a ton into a tote. i refus to feed any man made pellet feed, such as hog grower and beef grower as you dont know what put in that crap. keep in mind our Canada dollar is around 32% less the one USD

What would you recommend and why?
Feeding green/non-fermented soy produces phyto-estergen and can lower testosterone and raise estrogen levels....soy is a cheap source of protein, but it produces tumors and fatty tumors in animals....not such a problem in animals raised for quick slaughter at a young age........most good dog foods have dropped soy, because dogs live longer than slaughter animals and tumors/cancer was becoming a huge problem for pets.....soy is a big problem for next generation feeders of soy fed meat and eggs and milk and cheese.....
We get too much soy in our diets and hence the 10 fold rise in prostate cancer and breast cancer.....all restaurants use vegetable oil ---it is cheap (read the label --- soy bean oil)......burgers, fries, even little Debbie cakes have soy in them....it is in just about all our foods...Just too much soy for our diets.....We use no soy to grow our organic eggs (chicken, duck & quail).....I'm not sure what is compatible with pigs, but we use milo, millet, flax, barley and some rice....We buy pork and beef that has never been fed soy.......We have 6 doctors, and several nurse practitioners who send us their cancer patients who have estrogen driven cancers, prostate and breast primarily because our eggs do not have phyto estrogen... .Larry @ Scoot's Organic
@@connieblasingame7996 This is the best response to this video. I was super excited while watching until he mentioned the high percentages of corn and soy in the feed. It is way cheaper to feed this way, but it doesn't make their diet any better than commercial/grocery pork. I'm sure their pigs live a happier and healthier life otherwise. You are what you eat (and what your food eats).
It’s fresh ground. not a year old and there are no fillers, no insecticides, heat damage .....
Is the feed organic, or at least non-GMO?
It is not. The ingredients to do that become pretty cost prohibitive for us and the mill has challenges finding it. Everything is local. Appreciate y’all watching

So disappointed to hear that you care more about time and profit than the health of your livestock and the health of the people eating your products.
Corn and soy are the least healthy food you could possibly feed. Treated with more chemicals than any other crops. Even if crops are genetically modified the chemical fertilizer, herbicide and pesticides used on these crops is mind boggling.
And you are worried about fillers the big producers use?!?!
