Today we are talking about how we feed our pigs for free on some days. We have access to expired food from a cold storage company close to our farm and they give us food that is out of date and they are planning on taking to the landfill.
This saves money on our farm by reducing the amount of purchased pig feed that our animals consume. That causes an increase in profitability for our farm.

I feed my pigs totally free. I have never have bought feed for them. I get beans and bean meal that truck drivers dump on the shoulder of the road by the AG Processing Plant that my wife and son works at. They empty their hoppers along the road after leaving the plant from unloading. They have beans and meal that gets hung up in the hoppers of the trailer. I have several videos of free feed runs. I also pick up corn or beans that farmers spill during harvest.

Great tips on pig farming and feed acquisition. I work for a cold storage company (of course I am not going to disclose them) but you are correct in that there is a sickening amount of food waste in this country. Why not turn that into an asset for everyone. I love watching your videos. Wife and I have acquired some tropical rainforest acreage and looking into breeds....of course, I see us getting only about 2 or 3 pigs...probably Idaho pasture pigs, kune kune, or American genea hogs. I am thinking about developing this into a fruit and nut orchard and using the pigs to keep the area clean as well as meat. We are also thinking about doing vacation rentals in cabins in back of the property as well.🌈😃🤙

How’s the tropical rain forest going? What’s the location, here it rains every day, $40 for a bag of grower pellets. Banana tree and coconuts are free from my land. 🤙🏿

Another potential free or low cost option is to ask for spent grain if you have a brewery nearby. From all I've read (aspiring homesteader here, studying and biding time before making the leap), pigs 75lbs and bigger could eat about 50% of their diet in spent brewery grain. Depending on the brewery, they have a LOT of grain that has to get thrown out after they use it for their needs. Not a bad way to supplement feed! Also, dogs love it baked with peanut butter as treats, too. It could even be dried and ground into flour for human consumption too.
I used to work for a guy who got outdated bread from a bakery. Tons of free feed, literally and some goodies once in a while, too... Hundreds of outdated Entemann's chocolate covered donuts for example. A few times they had some dough to throw out and the pigs sure loved that raised but uncooked dough.

Just lay out flat in winter may have hold it down but it really helps soil it will rot away by spring
From my knowledge that would be a wild hog.most likely boar from the size of the dewclaws he is a big boy. Looking to service the gal in the pin. One or some are coming into heat.
My gramps use to wait till he saw these sights and he would go out with the dogs and round him up. Hobble the boar walk him back to spend time with the Sows. After he got acquainted with each one .He would put him in a different pin get him good and likkered up cut him and feed him out for another 3 months thin it was ham and bacon time for him. He sold all of the piglets when it came time. And waited for the next boar to come by.
Sounds like a good way to make use of a pest! He was a smart guy.

@@jamieramos8079 give him a 5 gal bucket is sour mash. Or a pint or 2 of moon shine. When he gets good and sloshed he will just lay there and grunt. Won’t have to worry about him charging you when you walk in the pen. Old timer Rohypnol.

I have a half acre garden which is fenced in. I use it as a winter paddock for my pigs. They root up the soil and eat what I dont, saving me a ton of work

Biggest issues in a lot frozen human food is excessive salt content...which can lead to a host of issues in pigs.

Awesome! Pigs are great animals. How are cattle prices now a days? Don't follow that market very closely.
I belong to a farm market co-op and they gladly give me their scraps from the vegetables they clean or can't sell. They sure help me out during the summer months with feeding the pigs.
I hope that's at least a 1 ton truck.
You need to calculate that weight before you load on the springs of your truck.
Adding a new transmission would definitely cut into the savings/profits.

It is a 3/4ton heavy duty. Rated to haul around 4000 lbs so should be fine. Agree I dont need to be buying a transmission. I did that last year on another truck. Appreciate ya'll watching.
Could be wild boar. Or wild hogs. Then again could be cattle or deer. Just whichever of these that are more prevalent in the area are probably the ones leaving tracks!! Thanks for all the good info!

I worked on a horse ranch a couple years ago, the owner raised chickens and sold off eggs to help pay feed costs, she had 2 old sows and we would end up with an excess of eggs, we fed them to the sows, they old girls loved them, tore into them with nothing left, we would also toss them a round bale of coastal, gone in 2 days.
Our pigs love eggs!

I wouldn't even bother mentioning this except that the feed is out in the weather (I am assuming), but rubber tires have alot of toxins in the rubber and water leaches those toxins out and into whatever is in contact with the tire. You are absolutely right about how perfect they are as feeders, especially the way that you have the 3 of them mounted on that wooden structure, so it pains me to tell you about the nasties that they contain. Appreciate the feedback. The feed doesn't sit in the tires for very long at all. We don't stockpile feed in them. They eat it as quickly as we put it in. Point being they get enough parasite exposure rooting in the ground, we try to cut down on that by not feeding them in the dirt.

if you put bags inside eachother you can use them as insulation for the hutches

Chuck, this is getting closed to the way we would raise our pigs for our own consumption. They got everything!! Grass clippings, fish guts, all left overs. We had a small deep freezer that we would bag up left overs and clean out the fridge. In the freezer it went. It would feed the pigs for a couple of weeks at least. We also would pick up out of date produce at the local IGA. Milk, bread, veggies. All free!! I haven’t done any of that with these. Wasn’t sure if that might be breaking the rules🤪
So my understanding is that as long as it isn't animal products (waste beef, pork, chicken, etc) you can feed it to them. Animal based waste food has to be heated and there are a bunch of regulations surrounding their use. In NC you have to have a permit to even feed it to them. All of our stuff is strictly vegetable/fruit products. GA may be different, not sure.
Good to know! I didn’t have any intention of feeding any thing that was a meat bi product. That is good to know though. We can get old produce that is being thrown out. Thanks!
Contact grocery stores to collect all the fruit and vegetables trimmings and discarding old produce make great tasting pork

Its been a while since i actively raising animals things change sometimes not always make sense when government gets involved if you know what i mean
For example in my area kids used to be able recycle bottles and aluminum cans ect some of which would come trash bins but local government has made against local law for any one to retrieve items from trash bin i learned this while trying to recycle dirt LOL LOL i was retrieving potting soil to admend the earth for flower bed LOL i got warning that its wasnt allowed to access anything from bin could put stuff in but not take out
So around here alit recyclables end up in land fill some where

9:12 Buck. Front tracks are noticeably larger. Front tracks also sink in deeper and splay more due to the heavier front end on a mature buck. At first glance, most hunters would call it a running track, but if you look close the edges are sharply cut, there is no sliding of the hoof, and no debris thrown forward of the track. This is a walking track.
Great observations. I had a camera on that field earlier in the year and caught a few bucks wondering around on camera. Hope to get a really good picture of him!

I use the Central Virginia Food Bank (Feed More) to get out dated food mainly veggies and my feed bill has completely been reduced> I only have 1 gilt that should farrow 1st week of September. We AI'd her using seaman from Shipley Swine.
If I may suggest, it is a bit ofextra work, but we feed our pigs with similar foodstuffs and we just compost all the cardboard or use as weed barrier with compost on top:) love your efforts:) thank you, Ryan Eschweiler

My stepdad fed his pigs from mainly grocery store garbage( old or bruised veggies fruits and orange juice puree. He would litterally get a pickup truck load 3 times a week for free. So i guess he basically fed his pigs for all but free. He would get a 55 gallon drum full of grain once a month. That was it for 3 sows and a boar and all the pigglets. Bread stores is another good way to feed up your pigs too. P.S. always soak your grain. But don't add fruit juice to the grain especially in the summer. You will have soused sows. Yep, they will get pickled. Lol. Ask me how i know! Lmao

Another way to cut costs my great uncle used to feed his pigs road kill deer. Probably be able to get a good bit of that if you call your game commission, he said the pigs loved it and it was the best pork he had ever eaten

Next time you have a 1600# load, why not get an empty pallet and lift it up next to the load in the truck. Move the boxes onto the pallet and then you won’t have to manually carry them so far.
Just make a ramp with little cookies to entice the piggies to climb into the truck bed. Then a split box will let the piggies know to chew thru the cardboard! He he

Way back when I was in school the scraps from the cafeteria went to a pig farmer.
I love the resourcefulness and cutting down on waste. When we get pics, I've thought of asking neighbors to fill a container I provide with scraps. I'd pick them up a couple times a week, empty, clean and return. I'll have to check around at restaurants or cold storage. Thanks for the ideas!

Next time tilt forks down while picking up then roll your forks up. Tractor is weak with the lift cylinders but strong with the tilt
Have you tried to ferment the feed mill feed, maybe something to save there too, at least 30% or more?
We've not tried it but have talked about doing that. heard a lot of good things about fermenting. Reduced waste, better digestion, etc.

Next time back the tractor up, put another pallet on it, stand on the tailgate, raise the empty pallet to just below waist level, and move boxes onto it. Time and back saver.
Get some pg 600 from your vet. If she's past the age of her first heat cycle and hasn't come in a shot of pg 600 will do it within a week. Then if she doesn't, id put her in the freezer.

Anyone thinking about this.... check your state laws first. In WV..... a farmer requires a state Ag permit to feed their hogs garbage..... and you need to get the guidance for what is garbage and if you need a permit.

Hi, Greensboro NC here. My Aunt owned a farm in Liberty NC and I would spend every summer or any other time out on the farm with her. She never bought feed. She always fed her animals with what grew on the farm so I don't understand why I've seen some people on UA-cam spend crazy amounts of money 🤑 on expensive feed! We never got sick 🤢 or had any problems with eating the animals so please explain to me why people go to such extreme lengths?
I know of a pig farm up here that has muliple trucks in the twin cities that picks up unused food on the daily to feed theres
I am just starting and i bought 2 AGH 10-week-old pigs I was told not to feed meat to pigs
Where we live you are not allowed to use food waste unless you cook it at a certain temp for so long. By having to do that it cost less to just buy regular feed. Such a waste but that’s gov for ya you can use it for your own pig you plan to eat but can’t sell it to someone else from my understanding.
From what I understand we can't feed any type of animal based waste food. Like leftover chicken, pork or beef. To do that you have to have a permit, it has to be cooked to a certain temperature for a specific length of time. We only feed vegetable, plant, fruit based. Good point.

I've seen farms that just dump that ki.da stuff over the fence. Leaving all the trash in the pasture
If there are any grain dryer near you ask them for any old grain they have. You can get cheap pig feed that way. Those dig spots look like armadillos digging for worms and grubs to me. The split hoof tracks look like a wild hog track.
Good idea. We don't have aradillos (possum on the half shell 😂) around here in NC. Could be a wild hog track. That's what we are afraid of near our pigs.

For you portable gates on pasture. Is the zips tie and fence wire held up. Or would you recommend added something else to stabilize it from them knocking it over ? I’m planning to do that same set up come spring .
If you are not going to use electric fencing in the inside, you’ll need something else to stabilize it. Hope that helps.

Does NC have regulations on feeding "spoiled" food? When I looked into it here, MO required it to be pressure cooked before slopping the hogs if the hogs are to be sold for consumption.
Same here but my understanding is that it applies to meat products. We only feed produce or non-meat products.

@@lendanhoke9066, yep, I read they’re not good for them anyway. My feeders last year would not eat brussel sprouts or broccoli at all. I haven’t been able to score much at our store for my breeders this year.

How long does those tire feeders last and once their spent how do you discard them ?...I found out we have alot of tires on our property that we just bought and i planned on using some for pig feeders, dust baths for quail and chickens , planters for a couple for container planting, and several to use around newly planted tree's to help hold moisture in the orchard...
I've been using these for about 3-4 months now. They hold up pretty good. Have to rebolt a tire down from time to time but otherwise no issues.
You have to be careful showing that the health dept does not like it. I done had a visit lol
Ethically, I wouldn’t use any soy products to feed any of my animals. With over 90% of soybeans being GMO, I couldn’t claim my animals as pastured, or GMO-free. Not to mention that unfermented soy causes decreases in testosterone and increases in estrogen. Just my two cents worth.

Ours is a mix of corn, soybean meal, wheat and a mineral pack.

Had a guy I knew that raised basic feeder pigs. He had a local buffet separate leftover food and food trays scraps and he picked it up daily. Kept the pigs happy and the buffet made money from something they were throwing away. Win, win

I brake my unusable eggs and feed back to my hens smashed up and mixed with their crumbles . Watch feeding to much filler feed like fruit and vegetables they are great energy but not good for weight gain . I wouldn't feed it it a big waste of time . Its is a great thing to use to reduce cost becouse a animal will eat way more then what they need to grow and be healthy . It's a must use product but watch how much you feed .
