I know this play well, and your pointing that out is the first I noticed it! And the ambiguity would undercut Macbeths’ assurance, if only he would listen. Nice catch!
As a fan of Shakespeare, I always find it exciting to see new refreshing takes on Shakespeare's works and this version takes the cake. The camera-work, the acting is just amazing. Can we talk about how the witches just drop by to give Macbeth the prophecy in his own home? Genius!
I agree. I thought that there were many interesting aspects to this version. The striking stark sets and cinematography (enhanced by being in B&W) were really interesting. The novel take on the witches was phenominal - really creepy and other-worldy. I mostly really liked MacBeth and Lady MacBeth being older than usual. I thought that this gave them quite a different feel to the more commonly shown ambitious young/in their prime couple. Even before the events of the play really took off, they were older, more mature and possibly more world-weary than we usually see and this was put across very well by both actors. And much more.

Macbeth is my favorite Shakespeare play, and this is my favorite version of it, ever. Just a masterpiece. It’s like experiencing the story for the first time.
Am I correct in saying this spell the witches conjure is a "real" spell, hence why the play is supposedly cursed, as witches at the time were unhappy with such knowledge being shared, and thus put a curse on the play?
We did play the Scottish play at my school. I only had a side role as Duncan, Guard, and Soldier. When we played that scene, the whole school building had a blackout.
I’m no theater person, but it seems to me that this interpretation focuses on MacBeth’s interior state. In most plays the action is “out there,” but here we seem to be constantly inside MacBeth’s heart, mind, and very sick soul. Maybe that’s why it stands apart.
If you're sick of nonsensical movies in today's world, read old literature they're more fun and exciting than today. I read a literary work by a Russian writer titled "Lazarus" it blew my mind at how dark it was yet compelling at the same time.
I haven’t seen Kathryn Hunter in anything since rome, but every scene of her in this makes it abundantly clear how much of a mistake that is. I mean they’re all amazing, but she is just a complete mind blow. Something else.
@@michaelepp6212 the witches, particularly in the opening scene, look straight out of Seventh Seal. Bergman was clearly a big influence here and I love it!
I think Joel Coen's two best directorial movies are "The Tragedy of Macbeth" (2021) and "Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?" (2000). His greatest Screenplay was for "Unbroken" (2014) in my opinion. His other films I would be interested in watching sometime are "Burn After Reading" (2008) and "A Serious Man" (2009).
This is probably a good movie but I can't get over the fact that this director is pretty much doing the same thing with the play that Orson Welles already did,...look it up
I gotta say, this is impressive - but by far my favorite macbeth adaptation is the one by roman polanski. gets me every single time, absolutely brutal.
The witches told Macbeth earlier that he shall be king (by now he is) but that Banquo (other knight) will produce his successor. Now the three witches come again and Macbeth has some more questions about it all. The three witches summon their master by tossing bits in the water all things of living things that don't go to heaven (animals, plants and non Catholics(middle ages Britain is where the play is set)) the master appears and he just asked if his reign will be long and if he has to fear Banquo. Tbh I'm not a Shakespearian.
@@pmgrantz Funny you should say that. I was thinking when I saw this trailer, 'why didn't they make a movie of Othello, starring Denzel Washington?' So the answer is yes, I think that it would be stupid to cast a white man as Othello, when there are plenty of good black actors. I bet that there would be uproar from the woke brigade, if that happened.
