    I visited the HENRY FORD MUSEUM in October for the second year in a row. I highly recommend visiting if you have never done so. Please allow a minimum of 2 days so you won’t feel rushed. I gave myself 3 days and I’m sure I missed something.

    In the late 70's I used to help my brother who was into American cars at a guys warehouse full of American cars , the owner went to Spain on holiday came back with short wheelbase Lincoln Continental said the car was a White house protocol car , was told car was in service at the Hawaiian embassy or something like that , the owner wanted to bring his kids up in Europe . It was black and had a thick padded roof small back window looked like it had a very small stretch of about 3 to 4 inches in the B post , was class getting Chauffeur around in it LOL .(UK)

    That is technically NOT the car Kennedy was killed in as it appears in the museum. Only the chassis underneath is original, the rest of the car was rebuilt and modified many times over the years.

      The once great American auto industry has lost it’s lustre many years ago.
      I believe after the last for years with Trump so has the presidency.
      The US has decline on the world stage. It’s never in the Top Ten Best place to live.

    Actually one of the last Presidential Limousine that preserved in museum is Bill Clinton's 1993 Cadillac Fleetwood Presidential Limousine. You can find the car in William J. Clinton Library and Museum.

      At the Eisenhower farm in Gettysburg Pa in the garage is a Chrysler Imperial about 55 or 66 which they said was used by Ike on his trips in the area. It is in the garage with other vehicles and can only be viewed through the garage door windows.

    It's amazing that Teddy Roosevelt would just get out of his 1902 horse drawn limo to shake hands with strangers, considering that his immediate predecessor, William McKinley, was assassinated in 1901. 20 years earlier, James Garfield was shot, and later died due to incompetent medical care. And in 1865, Lincoln was assassinated. Three presidents killed between 1865 and 1901 (inclusive). And yet, TR seemed to act as if there was nothing to worry about. In 1912, he was shot, but survived, while campaigning on a 3rd party "Bull Moose" ticket. He continued to give his speech, saying, "Friends, I shall ask you to be as quiet as possible. I don't know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot; but it takes more than that to kill a Bull Moose"! Contrast this with how the secret service quickly pushed President Reagan in the bullet-proof limousine, and then immediately rushed him off to the hospital, after his nearly successful assassination attempt by John Hinckley in 1981.

      After the assassination attempt in 1981, the limousine was refurbished and upgraded by Ford. The original trim on the limousine was early 70’s tail lights, and front grill and headlights. Even though Lincoln had gone through a complete model change in 1980, Ford replaced the front and rear with 1979 trim which was the last year that trim was available for that model limousine. A new limousine was available a few years later during Reagan’s term. Another new Lincoln Town Car limousine was used at George Bush’s inauguration.

    We all have opinions. But who agrees with me? well, at least on this one? They should have left the limousine the way it was; without altering it in any way, shape, or form. Why? Because it's all part of U.S. History. They should have left all the dents, scratches, bullet holes, blood stains, original tires, original paint job that was midnight blue, original windshield, windows, trim, strands of whatever, Paper, 🖋️ pens/pencils, tablets, everything that was inside including the original floor mats, everything and anything period (even other evidence) the original limousine keys, and flags in the front, instead of reupholstering it, and adding armored glass, and a bubble and update it for future presidents by painting it black and to modernize it after the fact; when it should have been done like that from the very beginning;(though I know who would have known back then; it was a different era) what good was it at the time that they re-did everything? To show off to the rest of world that yes!, The newly renovated limousine is now safe for future president Lyndon B.Johnson and for other future presidents.

      @jec1ny 3 роки тому

      The POTUS has a fleet of limousines, executive sedans and luxury SUVs, all modified and armored, available for his use or the use of anyone he chooses to allow to use the cars. The principle limousine, officially known as the state car, is actually two cars, nearly identical and built from the frame up to highly classified specs by the Secret Service and a contracted coach works. The frame is currently supplied by GM and labeled as a Cadillac though there is very little beyond the frame that provided by the company.

      Hi Kevin,
      The Lincoln Continental used by President Ronald Reagan was manufactured in 1972 and had been updated in the early 1980s, as the limousine was used by subsequent presidents.
      You can read more about the Reagan car in our digital collections: www.thehenryford.org/collections-and-research/digital-collections/artifact/186628/

      They swapped out grills and other external details over the course of the decade. The basic body remained the same. Remember, there was a huge budget for these cars but even so they got as much use out of them as possible before completely replacing. I know when Reagan was shot his still had the '72 taillights. Later '70s taillights are on this one.

      The midnight blue, un-armored convertible was rebuilt after Kennedy's
      assassination with a permanent roof, titanium armor plating, and more
      somber black paint. The limousine returned to the White House and remained in service until 1977. The modified car shows the fundamental ways in which presidential security changed after Kennedy's death.
