We have a word for this in Japanese:
    Yoko Meshi | 横飯
The peculiar stress caused by speaking a foreign language. Literally, a meal eaten sideways.
I struggled with this feeling for a long time.
Thanks for your videos. they're really helpful.

Ah this is such amazing advice, thank you! I feel like I have a high enough level to have conversations now but I always get stuck on how to start sentences or keep a conversation going. I think this will help heaps!

Laura, thanks a lot for your tips. I found myself in similar situations (in English), my fault was do not prepare the conversation previously. Honestly good tip.

Brilliant advice lovely Laura 👍👏🎁🙏👌. The idea of writing down conversations in order to prepare for the scenario is very helpful. That’s because, when learning languages, it’s difficult to articulate our thoughts because we are not used to formulating our message in the new language. So writing down the message is a good way of learning to formulate messages in the new language 🧐

Practicing “real life situations” is essential - and you nicely review an approach to gain experience in this area! My suggestion for even faster feedback is simply to use Google Translate. Depending on what I want to talk about - I simply type out in my native language (English for me) a quick conversation (ie, using the “filing your taxes” example that you mentioned in your video) - I’ll type out a few quick sentences to get a quick overview of the needed vocabulary in my “target” language - or, sometimes I’ll type out a complete detailed discussion. Best to do this in paragraphs (as Google Translate only remembers a limited amount). You’ll get an instant translation - AND - the voice translations have greatly improved in Google Translate in the past couple years in virtually ALL languages (ie, even in different alphabet languages such as Hebrew - the Google voice is amazingly good!). For A2,B1,B2 speakers - I find that between what I know in the target language and what Google Translate gives me - I can almost always recognize when a Google translation is a little bit off. You can SAVE your translations - practice translating yourself from your native language to the target language - play the Google voice translation - and repeat as often as needed. It’s available ANYTIME you want - and does not cost anything. It’s a great supplement to use IN ADDITION TO language speaking lessons with a teacher whenever that is possible for you. LAURA - Thanks as always for all of your GREAT material! - :)

Have you tried out Deepl? I use it all the time to write messages in Italian or Swedish! I use it a lot at work too to write in French 😄

Absolutely! As you say, inaction and insecurity are a happily married vicious circle. Practising important vocabulary/questions or talking to yourself helps. Another thing that really helps a lot is to embrace your "ignorance". You can have the bank conversation in English, you could just ask the bank person at the end how you have this conversation in German. And even when you do (key word "do" and not just study theoretically) it once, the second time becomes shockingly better! And when you do it a few more times, you'll be a wiz at it! This applies to all kinds of learning btw. Nice one Laura!

Can you recommend something similar to Lingoda that has classes in Catalan?

It is different than lingoda, but italki does have Catalan if you want to check it out 😊

@@CouchPolyglot Thanks! I speak Spanish and Italian, and a little French, so I'm finding Catalan both easy and confusing! 🤣
