- We team up with a carnivorous plant expert and enthusiast Mr Yudhistira in this episode to discuss Nepenthes. We start by defining what carnivorous plant behavior is, and where they stem from in evolutionary terms. We talk about their natural habitats, importance for ecosystems, their symbiotic relationship with many animals (Some of them you would be surprised), and conservation. We also break down the pitchers morphology, to understand what are the designs and functions of the pitchers to very minute details that is fun and interesting!

Yudhistira did a fabulous job of explaining the carnivorous adaptations of the plants! Thank you for sharing :)
Thank you.
I just want to say “WOW”
🥰🥰
Fascinating! When he came back with “Highway to Hell,” I cracked up! Excellent video!
😅😅
That's a beautifully planted greenhouse, every square inch packed with lush, natural looking plant communities.
Thank you
Oh my...what a coincidence....I just acquired a few nepenthes plants last week...interesting species....thinking of getting more....thanks for featuring.
Yeah they are next-level plants. Very interesting and satisfying to grow.
I've seen the documentary on the redfern channel, they re-discover that nephentes clipeata on mount kelam, and it was very-very hard to find and getting closer to extinction. So sad there are still many poacher freely took it.
Oh noooo
I’ve been growing these for years and did often notice my plants forming some kind of relationship with the local ant colonies (the plant give the ants constant supply of free food in exchange for a certain % of ants - and it’s a lot of food for the plants!) also, I notice geckos visiting my plants every day, they love the nectar.
Interesting interactions! Hope the gecko is not too small to fall into a pitcher.
I love having carnivorous plants for their beauty and unique characteristics. It is also quite nice that they eat the fungus gnats!
😀
I startrd my passion with aroids but Nepenthes hsve become my favorite. Redleaf Exotics sparked something in me and i just find them the most beautiful and unique plants
Redleaf exotics have done a great job sparking interests. I hear about their business a great number of times 😍
I love carnivorous plants. This was the most interesting and informative video I’ve seen on this plant. I’d love to go visit there!
Thank you. 😋
Such a cool conversation, was also awesome how excited Mr Yudhistira got the longer you talked about nepenthes :-) love to see professionals who are so passionate about their field! Very excited for part 2
Oh yes he is one of a kind. Some of the information blew my mind.
I thank you so much for this special episode Sir!!!🙏
You’re most welcome. Thank you for commenting!
Wow Sean, this was one of the best lessons I’ve seen on ‘planty UA-cam videos’ so far. Brings me back to my college days. Looking fwd to part 2. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you. I learnt so much too!
So informative! Carnivorous plants are definitely a very interesting family of plants. Thanks for posting Sean.
❤️❤️
I really enjoyed this episode. Super informative and explained brilliantly.
Fun fact, some regions in Thailand eat certain types of pitchers (they stuff it with rice and cook them)
Oh wow that is fascinating. I can imagine the nectar being fragrant….
Fascinating and attractive group of plants! Especially interesting that they are pioneer plants of the rain forest. The interdependence of all life forms in an ecosystem is an amazing thing. It forces one to look for the intelligence behind it all! Thanks to Mr. Yudhistira!
❤️
👏👏👏 Thank you very much for this 🙏
🙏🏽🙏🏽
Such an overlooked species of plant but very fascinating! I’ve just started collecting our native species here in the American southeast through legal means.
❤️❤️
Woaaa loads of info ..all this time just ignore to Nepenthes..now I'm in 😘💕. Thanks Sean 👏👏👏💚🌿👍, can't wait for the next!!! 🤗😍
Thank youu
Loved this video! Can’t wait for the next one 😍 I’ve just started collecting Nepenthes so this was perfect timing 😇
Yaye
@@yukihilwani9721 iya kah? Sempet juga sih me-generalisir kalo kebun raya yang dihandle pemerintah emang suka tidak terawat, infografisnya minim bahkan jadul, tapi setelah lihat video ini jadi punya harapan lagi sebernya mampu buat dikelola jadi bagus gini.
Very informative and interesting facts. Have more of this type of content in future. Good job
Thank you 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Thank you so much Sean for this video!
I truly appreciate it, since Nepenthes have become my new passion
and I have just started a small collection of hybrids.
This was so very interesting and informative!
Watching part 2 now ! 😀
Thank you 🙏🏽🙏🏽😋
Wow! One of the best carnivorous plant videos I've seen
Thank you. ❤️
I love the viedeos, which educate us, thanks!
Thank you 😀
Simply mind blowing! Thanks to Yudhistra, now I understand the importance of nepenthes in ecosystem building.
As usual great content. Keep it up Shawn😘
Thank you 🙏🏽
I recommended your channel to a plant group today. ^^
Whoaaaa that means a lot. Thank you 🙏🏽🙏🏽
I could literally listen to the two of you talk in this subject for hours. Both brilliant and the such a very interesting subject.
I also spot some very nice aroid and fern specimens.
Oh yes we have had interesting conversations off-screen too! Cant wait to visit him again
Very interesting video!
Thank you 🙏🏽
Bapaknya informatif sekaliiiiiiiii, it's like he loves Nephentes so much! oh iya apakah area Nephentes ini terbuka untuk umum di KRB?
Buka 😀 tapi make sure jgn di hari istirahat nya.
This is one the MOST fascinating and educational videos on Nepenthes I have ever seen!!! All thumbs up! Yudhistira is a Nepenthes+ living treasure. Can't say enough. Just awesome!😻 Mahalo nui loa to da max!
Thank youu
Great episode! Did not know that there are such a variety in nepenthes species
Thank you 🙏🏽
Long awaited collaboration 👍

You’re welcome 😀
That was so enjoyable and educational. I love your channel.
🙏🏽🙏🏽 thank you
Night time flowers r usually white but that one was red!!!
😀
Wow, wow, wow! I learned so much from this Sean. This episode was fascinating from start to finish and what a beautiful facility. Off to watch part 2.
Thank you ❤️
This is one of your most interesting topics so far. I always wondered if I can keep nepenthes plants. They're interesting but I don't like to kill one so I just admire them from afar. I also learned a lot from this.
Im actually still learning too. I have 3 nepenthes at this time.
@@onlyplants I made a big decision and got my first Nepenthes. I hope I can get them live for a very long time. I watch all your videos about it and watch your other videos in my spare. They're very interesting and informative. Thank you for sharing your travels.
Hi bro remember me? We met at Lanna, at Chiang Mai. Would like to know about the carnivorous plant nurseries in Thailand as well, there are few big ones near Rayong and Krabi.
Hello, I am not familiar with carnivorous nurseries in Thailand. Do shoot me a DM on instagram if you hear about any interesting ones. 😀
@@onlyplants Sean I would love to, but unfortunately I just returned to India from Thailand and it will be at least a months time from now when I visit again. Can give you great leads though or you have to wait for a month for me visiting there again 🙂.
Thank you for these two episodes Sean. It is so good to have an expert explaining monkey cups, as we call them in Malaysia. Have killed many and the ones I have left no longer produce cups, so am enjoying learning from the videos!
Thank youuu 🥰🥰
Now that’s one super fit tongue!😜
😛
I used to be a huuuugeee lowland nepenthes nerd before i turn 180⁰ and go all out on arid plants. Been keeping and hoarding cacti for a year now and i lost my touch keeping nepenthes and wet/humid loving plants
Your video really called out something in me, my old self that still believe on (what is left) my ability to make them little pitchery goodness thrive, but yeah hahaha (my living conditions now doesn't help at all on their wet and humid livestyle, like what i said, all out on arids)
What an interesting share. Nepenthes are actually quite challenging and can be stressful when conditions not ideal 😀
The selaginella are soooo gorgeous
I’m obsessed with them too! I havent figured out how to keep them alive though.
Best
Thank you 🥰
I've been thinking of maybe getting a nepenthes plant so this video is great time. And totally off topic but I'm jealous of how easily he can roll his R's 😆
Haha we Indonesians can roll Rs easily. Some say its the spicy food we eat!
A completely different world of plants. Why Indonesian seller doesn't like to export plant to UK. They always say they have difficulty with documentation. whereas Thailand they do it easily and never had problems ⚠️
This is because Thai government promotes exports of plants but the Indonesian government create a lot of barriers to export. Its a bit sad 🥲
That's my greenhouse? I wish!
😀😀
💚💚
❤️❤️
Wow very informative and educational, he explains it so well that we learn so much from a 37-min video -- including the evolution part! Great episode!
So, this section in KRB is open for public, right?
Thank you. And yes this is open to public!
Best to call beforehand though they are closed on many days during rahmadan month
thanks for the lectures and study tours!
Any recommendation for the newb which one was the easiest to care ?
I have watery habitats that are perfect for them :D
Nepenthes gracilis & mirabilis
Orang2 bilang "Nepenthes sejuta umat" 😅
Nepenthes ampularia seems to be a common one too… that probably means its easier and faster to grow.
Finally someone said it! Nepenthes flowers do smell like sperm and it was what struck me when I had my first Nepenthes flower. Awesome video! 👏
Haha Ill try to smell mine if it flowers
is this wonderful greenhouse open to public? How can I reach there?
It is open to public, in Bogor Botanic Gardens 😀
@@onlyplantsthanks!
🧐🧐🧐
🥰🥰
@@onlyplants hujan shain Ciledug 🤣
Where is this place
This is in Bogor Botanic Garden 😀
Is he saying huo/oo/m-m to mean 'yes?' All of that mean yes in my dialect. Haha
I think its just natural stutter in between sentences haha
@onlyplants Ahaha. Coz I notice he seems to say that when he agrees with you. 😄
That's really bad English lol
😅😅
This was a fantastic lecture on Nepenthes & carnivorous plants. This gentleman was so knowledgeable & I learned many new things. Great video Sean. Please thank this gentleman again when you see him for his time. I'm so glad you spoke about poaching. I have seen Hoya for sale on sites out of the country. A seller tried to encourage me to purchase a Hoya that his guy collected with no name, no registration , and no name. I told him No thanks not interested! I could tell they were poaching & that I will never support. We all need to try and do our part for conservation. ☺️💚🌿🪴🍀🌵🌱🍃
Whoaaa thanks for that. I will ask Yudhi to read the comment section. Its overwhelmingly positive!
