The 55/1.8 was the very 1st lens I bought when I switched to Sony FF. I photographed dozens of weddings with my A7iii and the 55mm. I now mainly film weddings so the 55 mm stays on my camera for the reception dancing. Great video as usual!
55mm f/1.8 has to be my most favourite lens ever…. For the last 8 years this has been must 80% lens at weddings on full frame and super35 talking head videos … love it so much that when we sold all our Sony cameras. I kept it knowing I will get at least one Sony body soon… super sharp and gets the job done…. This too me was second only to the otus
Used it on a senior portrait shoot. If you on on the fence about this lens just get it. I have a whole bunch of 50mms and I was like how good can this be? Its excellent. The coma is gone with the press of a button in LR.
Would you do zooms or primes if you wanted to shoot on a single body? You being the primary photographer. (With backup body and lens inside your bag obv, just not harnessed to you rambo style) I'm thinking about going with a 24-70 2.8 or extending my 24 and 85 with a 35 or a 55. Main camera is an a7r3. Any thoughts?
Hey Taylor! When you crop in camera Is there a lot of difference between the 20mp on the R6 and the 32 on the A7iv? What are your thoughts? Thanks for the video!
I have the Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8 Lens which I use on my Sony A7RIV both in "full frame" and in APSC mode (or crop), so it is "two Lenses" in one Lens. The Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm Lens are excellent in optical image quality performance, it is compact and light and very nice to handle for several hours. I use it for people and pets with eye detection autofocus. I can very highly recommend the Sony Zeiss Sonnar 55mm 1.8 !!! Sometimes I also use the 55mm for fx street and landscape photography. I also use my Sony 24mm 1.4 GM on my Sony A7RIVA Camera, also both in "full frame" and APSC mode (or crop) for people and pets, so with two Cameras and two Lenses, it is like havavin "four" Lenses, I can recommend it ! (If your are on a budget, get used gear, you can save more if you go for Sony A7RIII).
super ! newbie in sony with a a7m4, very interested with a7m4 tutos. interesting to set C2 to 1.5 crop factor !!! - Do you still use back button focus ? Mark galler seemed to say it becomes "obsolete" today with all other custom buttons and menus and prefers half shutter press method, hold focus lens button,... also he uses c1, c2, c3, afon, ael, video buttons with custom functions or the three "custom hold M1,M2,M3 menus of settings" - i see you are using M mode. I set "1" preset to mode A, AF-C, F/2.8, iso auto (i can easily set to fix value with OK reel), min shutter speed at 1/250sec, face detection. Does "M" mode remain better and more versatile and why ? I set video button to min shutter speed so can easily increase it to 1/1250sec for action. My "3" preset I use M F/1.8 1/60sec auto iso for night street photo mainly.
Do you use any ND or CPL filters during a wedding day, if so which ones work best for you and what time of day and when do you choose to use them mostly?
Hi Taylor, Gerald from Austria here. How would you describe low light performance from the 55mm F1.8 at a wedding day? Is autofocus reliable in dark circumstances? Thinking of swapping my 50mm 1.2 for the 55mm 1.8 too. Thank you for your help.
I've been filming Hybrid weddings for a few years, I was surprised how my philosophy is reflected in your wedding practice. It's nice to know their are others out there! we did have very similar kit till last year where I sold all my Nikon gear and now use Sony mirrorless, it is so much easier to do hybrid with! anyway thanks for the inspiration Taylor (I'm editing yesterdays wedding shoot whilst watching your vids! 😅)
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto nice. Follow up question which focus mode: tracking spot? Wide? Zone? With tracking spot you can lock onto your target but I think it’s the reason my battery lasts 300-400 shots
I feel like a good way to start out in weddings is to look for work as a second shooter. And / or, looking for smaller, more informal weddings as a primary shooter and then building up to larger ones. This is just me posting my inner monologue here, for all to see 🙂
Thats actually what I thought about the last days since I think that wedding photography is just a lovely task but I am bit intimidated if I would screw something up and would not be able to deliver their pictures or if I missed putting on the rings or the first kiss. Just me adding to your inner monologue :)

Totally agree. I get 6-8 hours of shooting, 1500-2500 pics. Was just confused by your wording. A7iii uses even less battery. Crazy how good Sony did after from the a7iii and beyond. A7sii needed 6+ batteries per wedding lol

I just bought this lens for $365 on ebay in mint condition, barely used. Cant wait to try it out when it comes in 👍

You killing it Taylor!
Hey Taylor. Pls make a video where you setup your a7iv. It’ll be really helpful since I’m thinking of getting one
I can do this
55mm Zeiss...such a good compact lens
I used only that lens for a wedding last year and I was surprised how great it did.

Curious to know too
In crop mode the A7IV spits out a 14 megapixel file

Hi Taylor,
Gerald from Austria here.

Thinking of swapping my 50mm 1.2 for the 55mm 1.8 too.
Thank you for your help.
Hi Tyler, what do you use as a setup on your camera to film behind the scenes? I saw a video of you a while ago, but I think you've changed setup now
This was excellent and fascinating. Thanks
I JUST shot my first wedding with an A7IV but with a 35mm 1.8! How weird! This camera is amazing though I got fantastic shots
That’s also a great lens
35mm is my favourite focal length 🥰
One more nice video! Wathcing it with my lovely cup of coffee!
Wait you became a Sony shooter????? Welcome to our side !!! Yessss!!!
I've been filming Hybrid weddings for a few years, I was surprised how my philosophy is reflected in your wedding practice. I like so much this 55mm. In wedding my first gear keep it all the day, and with second gear with 20mm or 135mm :)
Will it be sharper than the Sony 35mm 1.8? I'm not very impressed by it.
please do 50mm f1.2!!!
Do you prefer the canon r6 over the A7iv
They both have positives and negatives. Sad there still isn’t a perfect camera for this yet
Zeiss 55 best forever;D
Yo that APS-C feature. Never would have thought to assign it to a button. Literally paused this video to grab my camera and set that up lol
Love the video would you be able to list the settings on the photos like iso shutter speed etc! im definitely subscribing this video helps a lot
There’s a video over on the weekly members site content with a full walk through of the gallery and all the settings
I really like the shots at 10:30+, beautiful flare
Curious which focus mode you were in to make your battery last 1000 shots?!
I was continuous autofocus all focus points with face detect on. It probably would have done 3000 on one battery
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto nice. Follow up question which focus mode: tracking spot? Wide? Zone? With tracking spot you can lock onto your target but I think it’s the reason my battery lasts 300-400 shots
Whatever the widest all points is. I typically don’t run any tracking at a wedding
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto very helpful thanks 🙏🏼
You have fast hand bro!!
is zeis 55mm F/1.8 much better than sony 50mm F/1.8 250 euros ?
Hey please can you tell me where you got your bracket for the go pro?
Wonderful that is a surprisingly great lens!
Tell me
Plz stats in house. ISO and shutter
Can you do a wedding video using the a7IV's video capability?
I don’t really use it for photo/video hybrid days sadly.
Got a little confused. The battery lasted 2k photos with 35% left or nah ???
From full to 37% it took 2k photos
Do you inform the bride and groom you're only using one lens for their entire wedding?
Do you use flash for your non candids?
Not unless I really have to
That flare- vertical line the only thing i dont like in this lens
no chromatic aberration?

Why the 55mm over the 50mm 1.2?
Cost savings, weight. And I just enjoy this lens. 50 1.2 is great as well though

If I could only have one Sony lens for a wedding, hands down for me, 24-105….. oh, I have photographed several hundred weddings in my 30 year career.
cricket in Canada?🤔
Taylor sounds a little sad is everything okay? 😢
Like it
Imagine shooting so many weddings you get to put out this level of content with dedicated lenses haha awesome stuff!
The 55/1.8 have so much character, the images have a 3D look.
You said you had 37% battery remaining on your first battery at dinner time w/ 2k images. Then said it only gets you 300 images per battery?
Spec sheet always gives very low battery performance ratings, around like 300 or 400. When in reality it gets a lot more in normal use
I use 1.5 batteries for a 8 hour wedding day, about 2k photos per battery
