I was expecting a flat twin like the 2CV, but obviously with more advancement. I am surprised it has a 360 degree crank and hence the need for a counter balancer. Good it has a timing chain rather than a belt.
The TwinAir looks like a modified engine block version of the cast iron four cylinder. The FIRE engine. Yet, the 4 cylinder ran a rubber timing belt but they chose to run a timing chain with the 2 cylinder version. Wonder why ? The old set up with a rubber belt would easily have worked here as well.
Would’ve been soo much better to use a 270 degree crank... Examples: What Fiat used for the Twinair, a 360 degree crank inline twin: ua-cam.com/video/1R621EHFAOc/v-deo.html What they should have used (much better sound and smoother engine): 270 degree crank inline twin: ua-cam.com/video/b3ZDS6ssXcc/v-deo.html Firing order of 360 degree crank inline twin: ua-cam.com/video/658AsQxmQ44/v-deo.html Firing order of 270 degree crank inline twin: ua-cam.com/video/00RO9rOLt-E/v-deo.html
i know cars like the back of my hand and even i cant seem to understand whats going on here...my best guess is that its turboed enough to give it the hp numbers then (maybe) bypasses the turbo the your not accelerating to get the great fuel mileage

A V- TWIN ....is a much much better designed engine. Smoother and without inertial torque in the Fiat motor ..the Fiat engine is flawed due to its 360 degree crank...Fiat should have used a 270 degree crank in its parallel cylinders to emulate a 90 degree V-twin....cheque out the Yamaha R1 motorcycle crankshaft Fiat..please
john masters that's correct, and it's an I4. The MT-07 would be a good example of a 270 degree crank. I'd disagree that a v-twin is a better design for a car because it has to replicate many parts with a second head, timing chain, cam, etc. The advantages of a 270 degree crank I2 don't exactly play well in a car either, things like secondary balance and inertial torque aren't as useful in an engine that isn't designed to rev that high. The twin air shares its 360 degree firing order with the BMW F800R, a bike known for a smooth idle and good torque, but a relatively low redline. Good characteristics for a car engine.
orhan koç if the cylinders swing opposite of each other then the engine would try to rock along the axis of the crankshaft (the technical term is "nutate") and it would need a balance shaft anyway. Swinging the cylinders together at least results in an even firing engine.
they are moving together but if you can spot the cams, you can see that it is actually evenly firing, meaning the first cylinder has combustion stroke when the second cylinder has an intake stroke and vice versa. That means that the vibrations from the combustion are evenly distributed in time without grouping. Should it move anti-symmetrically, it would result in uneven firing and uneven distribution of vibrations in time, with a smaller interval between vibrations from combustion allowing them to constructively interfere from each other resulting in bigger vibration amplitude=more vibrations.
@ALGoodCars Il coso zoppo ti fa oltre 24 km/l in ciclo combinato!
get your mate to fit a bigger turbo to it and blow off valve. and from experience, women can't get the most efficiency out of an engine, it's not about driving slow, it's about smooth acceleration and not unnecessarily accelrating, predicting what's going to happen up front so you can slow the car down with using brakes so you don't have accelerate much to get back to normal speed
Why is the TwinAir not sold in the US? Really cool engine.

It's a balancer shaft. It counteracts the inertia of the pistons to stop the engine vibrating.
the video has frame-rate smoothness problems and the sound is periodically ticking...

A quad-air would have went like a rocket.

The inlet valves are controlled hydraulically to give variable lift and timing
@ors0balosso
Where is engine control module on Fiat 500 twin air 2013?
The part linked to coil pack

is it called Twinair because it has only two cylinders? sorry cant understand the video.. who knows why its called twinair?
Yes
nice track

Really? So may be you've built my new 500 Twin Air Yellow I've took yesterday!!!
What can I say...
Ginkuia!!!!!!

Io ne ho fatti 305000km poi l'ho data in permuta...

isnt the r1 crossplane crank ?

why is two cylinder moving together in the same direction? Doesn't it cause vibration?

how to assemble the Twi nair Turbo two cylinder distribution kite can someone help me plz with a video or something please

What is this madness?
This video explains nothing! International engine of the year! WHY!?
