this is one of the most informative automotive videos i've ever seen. thank you for making this so easy to understand for those of us who don't know cars
For some reason the VVT code didn't show up on a 2000 Avalon. I researched the symptoms on the internet and used a UA-cam video to replace them. It made all the difference in the world. You're a champ for taking the time to help folks with your videos. God bless!
I've watched so many videos that include needless time wasting information that is never relevant to the issue at hand. Having lived in New York for over five years of my life, I've gained the attitude of "get-to-the-point". Simple, straight forward, and concise. I've never done this but your video will be the go-to instructions I'll use in the future. Thank you.
You SIR are one of the best I've seen! Super informative, super step-by-step instruction, and great photo work to show what you are talking about! ALSO......... you SPEAK clearly and loudly enough so that every word is audible. You don't "assume" that the viewer knows anything and your explanations are spot-on. Thank you for this instructional video! It's going in my library now.........
Wow so thorough I love it! The other people that make videos like these just don't seem to care about the details I mean he even told us that it's located at the front of the engine which is so key. Thanks again!
It was pretty informative. One issue right at the start of the video where you said this part sends information to the vehicles computer is not actually true. The valve is just a dumb component that's controlled by the computer.
WOW, REALLY well done video; just the right amount of explanation and great editing to eliminate much of the in between stuff that people don't really want to see. Also, excellent explanation of what is going on. GREAT job; thanks so much my brother and God bless you.
Thank You so much for your video! You have not only helped me find my issue when doing my diagnostic for my smart car issue but you also did an AMAZING job with describing inm addition to the codes that the car would throw; explain what exactly will be going on with the car in addition to the codes being thrown to ensure more that this is most likely the issue. With your help I was confident in my online purchase for finding the part that was needed for my car. Please keep the love and support going by uploading more videos like this so us amateur auto enthusiasts can have some support when working on our cars! God Bless💌
Life saving video.. my hyundai i20 automatic check engine light was on for 2.5 years. Many car mechanics could not diagnose why. One guy recently diagnosed it - CAMSHAFT VARIABLE TIMING SOLENOID VALVE - thanks buddy
Great video!! Thank you for posting ☺️ my engine light has been on & was told that code meant needed to replace valve you were talking about. If at a light engine would shut down & sometimes hard to get back running & getting into traffic. Got to point where battery was drained. Today went got new battery - everything was great 5 min later & engine light returned . 5 min later stalled out in middle of traffic @ a light. 😬 fortunately had help pushing it into a parking lot. Was able to get running again and get home. Went to autozone and got the above valve. Wish I found your video first!! Took a couple hours but finally got the old valve out & new one In. But this video would have saved us so much time & F bombs 😂
Great video. My VVT harness voltage shows ~7.3 V. Resistance show ~7.6. Use 9V battery test is best way. Old battery of 7.7V does not trig valve open or close. Use MAF cleaner clean surface, and ultrasonic bath clean VVT ( merging into ethanol or gasoline) to remove the tiny deposit. Put it back, it works great. Toyota part costs $244. OEM part costs ~30 bucks. Cleaner costs 15 bucks.
My Hyundai i20 AT had this check engine light on for 3.5 years...I took it to 7-8 car garages.. had many scans done but all those idiots could not diagnose that the VVT solenoid was broken on one side and hence the light was on. Finally i found a mechanic who diagnosed and found this. On changing it immediately the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT VANISHED. Also thanks to this video which i forwarded to the mechanic it helped the mechanic
first of all, god bless you too budy, i´m from Argentina, i have my own workshop and you my friend just helped me a lot, it´s kind of hard to get information of this kind of quality, keep going like this!!
You saved me $$!... Very to the point, no BS video. I was about to buy 2 new ones when I saw your vid and I cleaned in solvent, did the tests, changed oil and filter (very important) and viola; good as new! I owe you one my friend, Thanks from Ft Worth Texas
Just replaced mine today didn't have a clue what it was 51$ 15 minutes... Gave me a camshaft sensor fault but I found it because it cracked open and was leaking oil squirting out. Thank you
Thanks man ! mine looks clean as hell soaking it for 2 days to try and get any gunk out if there was any it wasn't visible, with mine the spring is at the top near the connector so it probably traps a lot of gunk and its completely seized! Also to anyone trying to test the spring by moving it up and down be careful its pretty brittle metal as I just found out when It chips a piece off. Luckily mine was seized or unluckily so it doesn't matter.
At the 30 second mark of the video your finger appears to be directly below the Intake cam VVT solenoid. The 1ZZ had a VVT on the intake, or exhaust cam depending on the series 1 or 2 engine version. Then I believe on the 2ZZ there are VVT hubs on both cams. Thanks for the video.
YOUR VIDEO IS ABSOLUTELY FAB. I have watched I don't know how many different car fix videos and you put out a 100% user friendly video. Keep making cuz your great.!!!!!
Great video and word of caution. You tested the solenoid input voltage at 1v and used the 12v battery to activate the test. AA battery most likely would have been sufficient. Too many amps and/or voltage could breakdown the insulators in the part being tested and destroy it prematurely. A stepdown transformer with the battery would be a decent option too, amps depending. 😁
I had fault code P1007 and P1014 on Peugeot 207 car could not start I just cleaned it and bingo it started again. Be careful the symptom initially looks like a fuel problem, don’t replace your fuel pump just yet. Thanks for the video!
Very informative, thank you. Question: does a bad VVT solenoid cause, for lack of a better description, a 'wheezing' noise when bad? - I am not getting any warning lights and no noticeable running problem, but rather a noise that started suddenly and that now goes up and down with engine rpms. 2012 Range Rover Evoque 130K miles.
Bro you need to be a teacher for this stuff cuz you have explained this better than any other tutorial I have watched 🤘🏼🤙🏽💪🏽✌🏽.. mad respect fam peace n love keep it rad stay safe and build on
Really helpful explanation of how to diagnose a faulty valve timing control / oil control solenoid. I am going to ask my mechanic to run through these tests before he replaces the existing one as they are $1,500 USD just for the part, and it may not be the answer!
0:12 Incorrect, the solenoid is NOT a sensor. What was described is what the Cam sensor(s) does along with the crank sensor, and translated by the ECU as to what load, and cam phase to adjust to. The solenoid is only a sensor if there is a short in the circuit. The ECU give a solenoid fault if it doesn't see the cam phase adjust to what it expecting.
Awesome Video! Had P0023 (2012 Enclave) (also had P2099, P0430) engine chugging slightly in OD. Finally SOLVED it by replacing VVT Solenoid (think problem was: I cracked solenoid plastic housing when replacing my alternator), But first replaced Camshaft Position Sensor (see steps below) but didn't get rid of codes so I replaced VVT solenoid after solenoid connector cracked off in my hands when trying to unplug connector to test. Also used liquid electrical tape to reseal connector wires as they were pulled back from connector and showing bare wire. Side note: Did all the following and didn't solve it...ugh: Replaced the Camshaft position sensor & bank 2 lower O2 Sensor... but code came back. Bank 2 exhaust is located just to the left of the Oil fill cap (near top of engine). Unfortunately, it is hidden behind a ton of stuff that needs to be removed to get to it. Heres what it took: Detach negative battery cable from battery. Remove10mm holding ac line near top front. Remove (2) 10mm holding overflow tank (move aside). Remove Fusebox cover. Loosen (2) phillips 10mm bolts (holding fuse wire harness) inside fusebox. Remove (1) 13mm bolt connecting positive battery terminals to fusebox. Unclip and remove fusebox middle part (with fuses) removing wire harness from bottom. Unclip/remove fusebox bottom. Remove (3) 10mm fusebox aluminum baseplate. Unclip wire harnesses from baseplate. Remove (2) 15mm engine mount bolts (holding rubber figure 8 mount). Slide rubber figure 8 mount out sideways. Remove (2) 18 mm bolts from part of mount that bolts directly to engine. Remove (1) 10mm camshaft position sensor bolt. Remove sensor. Detach sensor wire clip. Reverse to replace everything. Lots of parts to remove - it wasn't that bad once I figured it all out but just a lot of little maneuvering to get such a small part out. I would give yourself 1.5 hours (or more) to remove and 1.5 hours to replace. This same/similar procedure can be used to get to the alternator on this car also but I'd also remove radiator hose for alternator and plastic shroud for alternator.
In this video link, the guy has to take an engine cover off to get to it. It would be nice if engineers would design stuff where it's easy to get to, wouldn't it? If they had to work on their cars they'd build them differently. Here's the video I found: ua-cam.com/video/sIQy4Lshvjo/v-deo.html

Excellent video thanks. Mine also has the screen at the bottom below rhe solenoid...should I try to remove & clean it? I'm not sure if I should take the risk .... my understanding is that they're very fragile.
Paul, I have a 2010 Camry. I received the P0013 code. I completed step by step, by the way; best video I have ever seen on here, and everything has checked out. I replaced both of the OCV/VVT and still getting light and codes. Any suggestions?
did you read any voltage at the connector with the switch on? i read no voltage and i cant find anywhere if that's normal for this car (also have a 2010 camry)
Thanks you so much for your very helpful video tutorial.I just saved a lot just by watching your video. Sure to follow your next and other tutorials in the future. God bless you man..
Don't know if mine's operating or not and it's a PITA to pull but there's Oil in the plug. So I did a little research and found a replacement with a better rating than the factory piece for a fraction of the price.
Thank you so much for the informative video, I have 2012 ford expedition 5.4L, mileage is 200KM. It has the P0024 code with "check engine on" for over 2 years now, I have changed the The Oil Control Valve (OCV) to the bank 2, but it did not fix the P0024 code. do you think using the "Cam Phaser Lockout" can fix the problem. note1: there is no knocking noise sound, the sound of the engine is good. note 2: mileage per hour is always around 12mpg. note 3: I am using 5W30 full synthetic engine oil. Thank you.
I have the same problem with my 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe 3.5 V6. And the check engine turn on and after driving about 20 miles turn off and then on. It’s crazy I’ve spent $$$ trying to fix this problem
Does oil pour out when you remove the valve? Also I suspect you have to re-install the valve if you want to drive to the auto parts store for a replacement!
Very nice video, very helpful. I have 2.4L ecotech 2012 Buick Lacrosse code P0016, P0017 and P0172, smoking tail pipe and engine doesnt pick up 100% power. Engine sound fine, probably timing chain off track by teeth??
What type of cleaner could I use on an OCV/ VVT solenoid? I have a code for the driver side one on my Lexus LS400. I've ordered a new one but I wonder if I can salvage the old one.
Your videos are helpful all times thanks for them🙏 but i need help if you can please! My car Peugeot 107, P0010 cod have no connection to VVT-ventil. I check it with digital diagram and there no connection in the cable/ lin. I don’t know how to fix the lin?
Say Regularly again. I got a laugh 😅. You was this 🤏 close to tung twister. 😅 You have good vocal to facial expressions 😅. Oh and pretty informative on Vvt actuator thingy. 🎉
I think you may have solved my issue on my 2010 Buick Enclave, But I am getting a P0008 code which is related to Timing chain issue but I only trip this code when I stomp on the gas to get across a 2 lane highway or I get shudder Lack of power when I am going up hills. which I thought was transmission issues, Recently I replaced 2 cat converters P0430 and P0420. Leaning now towards VVT Solinoids Do you think my issue is simular with a P0008 code?
Straight up the best automotive diagnosis video I've ever watched on UA-cam, and I've watched a lot. Thanks for being so clear and thorough!

Does oil pour out when you remove the valve? Also I suspect you have to re-install the valve if you want to drive to the auto parts store for a replacement!
Thanks friend , your video has seriously help me on a car in my workshop. Greetings and God bless you.

Very nice video, very helpful. I have 2.4L ecotech 2012 Buick Lacrosse code P0016, P0017 and P0172, smoking tail pipe and engine doesnt pick up 100% power. Engine sound fine, probably timing chain off track by teeth??

Where do we find information on ohm resistance values for particular vvts?
Usually in the vehicle service manual, you can find them on the manual datacar pages and some in AutoZone, there is a lot of information on the net.
Your videos are helpful all times thanks for them🙏 but i need help if you can please! My car Peugeot 107, P0010 cod have no connection to VVT-ventil. I check it with digital diagram and there no connection in the cable/ lin. I don’t know how to fix the lin?
Thanks so much! God's blessing to you also.

Say Regularly again. I got a laugh 😅. You was this 🤏 close to tung twister. 😅
You have good vocal to facial expressions 😅.
Leaning now towards VVT Solinoids
Do you think my issue is simular with a P0008 code?
Many thanks, God bless you 👍
