Sarge's is probably the only reasonably popular restaurant in all of NYC where you can order coleslaw over a pastrami and corned beef sandwich and not be asked by the staff (and maybe by a customer) to leave the premises -- post haste! Although such sacrilege upon a perfect piece of brisket is ordered fare in S. Jersey and Philidelphia, it is not ordered that way by self-respecting New Yorkers! Compounding your gastronomic faux pas was giving the sandwich at Sarge's your highest score, despite that the rye bread there crumbled out of your hands upon immediately being touched. The only ones who rave about their pastrami and corned beef are the tourists who eat there, which entails most of their customers.
The attempt by two west-coasters to seriously critique a NY culinary staple like the pastrami sandwich rang hollow. It was tantamount to my going to Los Angeles -- or San Diego -- to preside over and bestow the Blue Ribbon Award for the best tacos.

Oh come on! What kind of fair and equitable taste testing is this? All four sandwiches needed to be identical: Sliced rye bread, pastrami, corned beef, and NYC style deli mustard. That should have been it for all four sandwiches. If the restaurant could not produce that it should not have been included in the test. You are in NYC for crying out loud and you couldn't find four restaurants that could do that? Out of all the delicatessens in NYC?

the pastrami on rye at katzs with mustard for me is the best sandwich in the country hands down, if im within 100 miles of NYC im making the trip every time and I dont like NYC at all, I sometimes hate it. the traffic and the amount of people never mind the sick parking situation. but then theres the pastrami and the corned beef, Dont get them Together on the same sandwich thats just wrong. the knish and hot dogs with mustard and kraut are a must, i think the cream and black cherry sodas are like $3,50 a can I havent been in over a year thinking of taking a trip soon. oh btw last time i was there with my wife and daughter we spent over $125 we left with a smile. there are alot of tourist for sure but the real new yorkers are there in big numbers trust me im 48 i been going since i was 10 the food has not changed. I want my last meal on this earth to be a katzs pastrami on rye with mustard and slip the cutter a 5er and tell him to make it MEAN and LEAN !!! that 1st bite youll know what pastrami should be. so is $25 alot for a sandwich ? Not this one.
Thanks for reading just my 2 cents

Thanks for the recommendation. I ate at Sarge's for dinner when I visited NYC for the first time and was not disappointed. The Pastrami and Corned Beef Sandwich was delectable. My only issue was that the bread sliced could have been thicker so it wouldn't fall apart as you eat. But other than that it was terrific.

As a native New Yorker, come on guys. This comparison is all over the place and inconsistent. A pastrami and corned beef sandwich at one place, just Pastrami at another and a Ruben at a third place. Rye bread, French banquet, vegetables, mustard, Russian dressing and sauerkraut. Russian dressing and sauerkraut is a Ruben which is a different sandwich style that will always be less dry. If you’re going to do a comparison of NYC best pastrami and/or corned beef sandwiches keep it consistent. Have a pastrami or a corned beef sandwich on Rye with mustard (the standard) at each deli. Also no offense to the guy from California that doesn’t like mustard but the pastrami sandwiches in Cali are as good as world famous Katz’s Deli (the oldest deli in the US)? You’re crazy. Ive spent a significant amount of time in Central and Southern California, the sandwiches don’t even come close. They are diner quality at best.

My yelp review of Sarges. We really enjoy watching you but have to respectfully disagree with you about Sarge's. "Ate here last Thursday, so disappointed. Service was slow and only 3 tables had patrons including ours. Waitress was distant and cold. Food was expensive, 25.00 per sandwich (2) fries, 1 wine, 70.00 plus tip. We saw Here Be Barr on youtube who said Sarges was better than Katz, not even close. The pastrami was like chipped pastrami which hurt the overall flavor for us. Bread was on the dry side not soft and pillow-ee like Katz. The fries we very good. We regret not having gone to Katz instead.

Katz's Deli IS great, and the sandwiches WILL fill you up. But it's also a definite tourist trap, in part because Meg Ryan's famous "orgasm" scene in "When Harry Met Sally" was filmed there. There's even a sign over the table indicating where she & Billy Crystal sat during the scene. Also, the place is ALWAYS crowded, even on "slow" days. So, expect to sometimes sit with total strangers. I'll definitely have to try Sarge's Deli next time I'm in NYC!

i've been to restaurants that seat total strangers at the same long table: in Amish Country and in Texas, and i even worked at one. it's a great way to meet interesting people from all over and, if the food's good, the ambiance can be tremendous! so don't dismiss the practice out-of-hand, William.

2nd Ave deli was the best I have even visited,, but it was so long ago it was on 2nd Ave. (I moved upstate.) I liked that it was not a tourist trap. The atmosphere was completely different from all the others. More real. I will visit the new location when I return.

I can get a Pastrami Reuben for about $6-8 on Long Island at pretty much every deli.
Edit* Thanks to inflation my local deli is charging $10 for a pastrami and melted Swiss on rye.

I stay in LIC when I visit NYC. The Plaza Express Deli by Queensboro Plaza is awsome and less than $8 for the largest sandwich. (The Ruben and American were my favourites). Katz does have better pastrami but not $25 worth.

I don’t think Sarge’s beats Katz’s. Don’t lose sight of the fact that you had just meat and mustard on Katz’s sandwich whereas you had Russian dressing and coleslaw on Sarge’s. You should compare apples to apples in order to make a fair comparison. I also recommend Pastrami Queen for a superb corned beef on rye.

Only foods typically associated with New York, but you're not gonna find let's say Tex-Mex foods in New York that even come close to what you'll find in the Southwest!! Bagels, deli food, pizza, sure.

Aaaahhhh New York delis. I do occasionally miss NYC delis, you can get most any sandwich and any way you like it. I think someone may be able to make a vlogging career on NYC delis, well at least a pretty beefy book (no pun intended).

Aaaahh New York Delis. I occasionally miss the delis of NY. In many of them you can have your sandwich made anyway you like it. You could spend quite a bit of time just vlogging on NYC delis, it may be able to be its own channel or at least a pretty thick book.

Katz's has good quality meat but not the best. Their mustard is the best deli style I have ever had. I grew up nearby and we had them cater the last couple of funerals and they did a fantastic job. 2nd Ave Deli was the best in the neighborhood until they moved. Their pickles were incredible.

Been eating Pastrami in NYC since 1945. Nineteen-forty-five. Three quarters of a century (3/4). Nothing, nowhere, not on this planet, is there anything like Katz's. Wasn't, isn't, never gonna be. I hate the crods there - I hate the chairs there, and I certainly don't like the prices there. BUT! If you want a knish - square or round, or a latka and a Dr. Brown's and a real pickle, a pastrami sandwich which is better than ***. Katz's- before Paris, before a trip to the moon, before you win the lottery and before you die. (I do not own, nor am I in any way affiliated with this old place. I'm not even Jewish.)

PNonone talks about Katz's dining room. The back room. As of '21,while waiting in line with a group of four, look for the waiters coming out front to find the groups. Table service in the back dining room.
