I BOUGHT THE MOON WATCH YOU'VE NEVER HEARD OF!

- The Bulova Lunar Pilot moon watch is a relatively inexpensive timepiece with an AMAZING history. I've been eyeing up this particular watch for a while now and finally decided to pull the trigger and buy the Moon Watch you've (probably) never heard of! In this episode I go in to the history of this iconic watch and tell you all about how this Bulova ended up replacing an Omega Speedmaster on the Apollo 15 mission to the moon! Collecting watches doesn't have to be expensive, there's so many amazing pieces like this one, steeped in history that won't break the bank.

Swatch Group owns Tissot and Omega as well as many other brands and the ETA line of movements. Omega does NOT make Tissot, they are independent companies under one umbrella corp.
Thank you.
I was hoping someone would correct this.
While it was a cringe comment, I’m hoping he was trying to say “made by Swiss” and just had Omega on the brain.
I know I misspeak all the time so I suppose it’s possible.
At any rate, it definitely needed correcting so thank you!
I paused the video and came to the comments for this. Well done correcting that mistake!
Haha!!! That comment made me cringe. It's like saying this VW was made by Audi.
Exactly. This greasy dude lost me with that one.
Caught that one too
When I was growing up, Bulova watches were the thing for the stylish folks and very much in demand and Timex for the general public (I'm 75). Thanks for taking me back in time a bit.
In Toronto the daily noon news was sponsored by Bulova . Its 12 o clock Bulova watch time. There was also a Bulova watch tower at the Canadian National Exposition. I collect vintage Bulovas. Oldest is 1953.
They're coming back I have 3 lol
2:54 Seems like an awesome shop - but saying Tissot is "made by Omega" is misleading at best. Tissot is owned by Swatch Group, operated under completely different umbrellas even though Omega and Tissot both are under Swatch. Tissot uses ETA (Swatch) movements, while Omega makes their own. They aren't made by the same people - just a heads up to any viewers!
Also the Hamilton shown here has very little ressemblance to the Elvis’ one, saying it’s Elvis watch is very misleading as well…
Tissot is, historically, the sister brand of Omega (like Tudor is to Rolex) since 1930 when they together formed SSIH, the precursor to the Swatch group. There are several older Tissot watches co-branded with Omega.
..but to sell a Tissot Ocean Seastar Automatic (Powermatic 80) for over $1000? Tisk Tisk. I mean, I am all for mark-ups, but that watch, MSRP is $725. Damn. Even the Seastar 2000 MSRP is $825.
Yeah, this guy is the reason that when I go to a watch shop, I shop and don't talk to the salesperson until I am ready to buy. I don't allow sales people to help me shop. If they follow me around the cases like this guy, I just look and leave then buy later online.
I have the exact same watch. Bought it roughly a year ago and still love it to bits. Wore it on the nato strap for a while but swapped it for a Hadley Roma Kevlar strap (black with white stitching). You're gonna absolutely love it!
Space graded speedmaster didn’t have saphire crystals, they were all acrylic crystals because saphire if it breaks makes tons of small glass pieces, acrylic does not.
Good to know!
None of the Speedmasters of that era had sapphire crystals (in fact, I don't think any watch did). They had what Omega called "armoured glass" or hesalite, which is a form of acrylic.
@@coopdivi armoured glass was acrylic with a brass or alloy ring on the inside diameter of the crystal. This is my understanding, which I’m happy to learn more about.
@@theGoonezone I think you are thinking of Apollo 13. Jack Swagart used it to time a mid course burn in the absence of the Nav computer.
Saphire never scratches acrylics does
I have 7 Tissots and 3 Rados. Each of them are of better quality than any Tag Heuer or even some Breitlings and Tudors. Good doesn't always have to be expensive. Look in to Rado ceramics and Longines. You will not be disappointed. I always say a Longines is a poor man's Grand Seiko and a Rado is a poor mans Rolex.
They nailed the 2021 presage series. Great little shop with quality watches for normal people
Agreed!
It takes me literally weeks and sometimes months to research and look at the next watch I want to buy. I love my collection of Seiko's, G-Shock's and Tissot's, but I have been looking at other brands, and the back story on this Bulova is what got me interested in this watch. And the fact that it is a great looking piece is why I want to get it.
Watching your video got me even more excited. And I would agree, that the silver cased model with the NATO strap is the way to go.
Do it! I love mine
Never heard of?Lol,its one of the most known models.
Glad you’re well read on your watches!
Only well known in the watch community.
@@ohno316 never say never my friend. Stay safe and positive! 👍
@@hockingham7160 could say that about any watch other than a Rolex
@@AdamSwords Dam so rude of the guy not everyone is a watch nerd.
I bought my 50th Anniversary bulova moonwatch at kohls for a little over 300! Had it for a couple years and love it!
Very nice!
Great Bulova i Love my Bulova and my Speedy both are great
Awesome Adam, love the format, Please do more like this, you concentrate on the prices us mere mortals can afford on all sort of goods, from watches to cars and clothes and let Michael do the high end gear, look forward to the next one,, p.s as usual its raining here in the Lake district lol
For sure!
@@AdamSwords Have you had a look at the Sinn U1? I would love to see your reaction/review of it. It made out of Uboat steel.
@@ddaydingo7041 yeah it looks like a Lego watch lol but Sinn is quality
@@darrenfry4695 That’s true! Never thought about it. Lego is awesome and Sinn is quality. Nevertheless, Adam is obviously missing out on a lot of amazing brands.
My Bulova Lunar Pilot is coming today. Very excited.😊
Great watch Adam, but most people aren't sleeping on Seiko. The "top" 1% dont care about Seiko, the majority of the rest, us mortals, deffo know our Seikos :)
Thank you for bringing this watch to me. Iv now got one and love it. Love the story behind it. Thanks 👍
Love the energy. Dude knows how to keep a video from going stale.
I have this watch on the metal bracelet. I absolutely love it!
I heard of this moon watch as I'm into watches , just bought one today same model like yours
At 21:40. In the fall of 2023 I started seeing new versions of this watch at Bulova ADs. There is a polished stainless steel case version with black dial and link steel bracelet. There is also a white an blue dial version with steel link bracelet and leather strap.
Just bought a NIB Lunar Pilot with the bracelet for $375... With tax/ shipping $432... Can't wait for it to arrive...
Congrats!
Cmon bro.... Never heard of Hamilton???? LOL....
I bought a Bulova Lunar Pilot about a year ago after hearing the 'only other watch to be worn on the moon' story.... Its a beautiful watch, However, its so nice looking i cant bring myself to wear it! Great pick up anyway...
Cool episode. My first “expensive” watch I bought for myself is a Seiko Titanium Chronograph. People are amazed at how lightweight it is!
I appreciate how you open the door to us on new, interesting and affordable watches.
You being an ad man I'll add this to your knowledge pool...the first ever TV commercial was for Bulova. "The world runs on Bulova time"
Great video, need to go back and look at the other side of the shop. Great work Adam
Make more of this watch content Adam, seeing this about affordable watches and your unbiased attitude towards watches is enjoyable. The Rolexes etc. on the other channel are getting a bit of tiresome.
Glad you’re enjoying!
I have a bulova and everyone thinks it’s ridiculously expensive. Great watch. Great value. Gorgeous
Cool watch, great bloke in the shop.
$695 ? These were $350 two years ago when I got mine, and it has the metal bracelet! Somebody has a nice markup.
A very nice watch. I'm sure you will enjoy it. I have the version with the bracelet (95B258) and timed over precisely one year from when I got it, it had only gained 2.3 seconds. I hope however you didn't pay the asking price at the shop. Here is Aust, you can buy the same model as you did (96B251) for AUD$499 which at the current exchange is approx. US$375.
I didn’t :)
I love my Lunar Pilot. I got the shiny one with the old-style Bulova logo. No date, alas. I like the distinctive pushers and the case shape. And the sunken index track and subdials look great.
Cracking watch. I rock mine on a Kizzi NASA strap for a more “authentic” vibe. 👍🏻
Bulova makes some of my favorite watches. My newest is an Octava crystal in black stainless steel. It’s very affordable and catches a lot of eyes
I love the way you rationalize your decision-making and how you don't let other distractions factor into your original reasoning. It's an amazing-looking watch. I love the story behind it. Congrats!
I know what I want! 😂
@@AdamSwords dude you have the same style as me! I love it! Always do you bro! Love your channel man!
Hey Adam, I'm a bit of a watch reseller myself, and I have to let you know, I have never seen the Lunar Pilots trade over $600, let alone that high. Even the one on the bracelet which is sold out most places doesn't. $699 is an absolute rinse, guy probably made $300+ from the resell if he got them for $320 on release like most of us. Also, you can just straight up buy your model for under $600 from bulova themselves... it's $556 from them right now. In general this guys prices were over MSRP, especially if he really sells seiko 5's for over $299. You could probably walk into like a Macy's or something and do better on pricing. I'd be careful dealing with someone like that, good luck in the future.
So true, I couldn't believe the prices he was giving. Adam needs to learn a lot about watches still.
..and that Tissot...jeez. The MSRP is $825. Dude selling it for over 1k...that's ridiculous.
i bought the bracelet version for $460 on Amazon. that was what people were asking on ebay for the same model used. the price fluctuates from $400 to $580 new on the grey market. yeah he bent my man over on the price
The man has to run a shop in a expensive aeria, keep on the light and pay rent: he is providing a service for the customer who is willing to pay for it. Also you can see the actual watch before buying it. I would rather pay a bit extra for that than buy something that I've seen on a screen without actually wearing it, feel it and seeing it with my very own eyes. If he really was too expensive, I think his shop wouldn't have survived.
I got mine on Amazon $240 with 1-day shipping. Nice to support the mom and pop but not at 3x the price.
Adam
Great video down to earth , most of the population in the Earth are not rich to buy bling bling expensive watches . Normal people mostly buy brands you showed us in this video .
I have seven watches ( Tissot titanium , citizen , Toywatch , Kronos, Dogma , Casio and Viceroy ) rather than buying one expensive watch I have 7 that's Great and you working with Michael but your this video shows your are down to Earth . Great video I love this Bulova which you bought enjoy
✌️
As close to the original? Why didn’t you get the version without date, the special edition? It’s as close as it’s gets, absolutely stunning 😍
I have the no date version. Unfortunately it doesn’t come with the Velcro strap. I’d love to get one of these straps for my no date lunar pilot
I just picked up your video by chance. I'm also looking for a Bulova, I wanted to buy the 50-year anniversary model but I'm like you: I prefer the original version with all its incredible history. I can't afford to have a Speedmaster, but I would still have a watch that went to the moon.
A Frenchman who loves watches with a history !
Lunar Pilot is a beautiful watch. I sold mine a year ago and I don't know what I was thinking stupid, stupid, stupid!! 🤣 To be fair, I have a pretty decent collection including Tudor and Omega but I really regret flipping the Bulova. Fortunately they are relatively affordable so I can pick another up.
Bulova have some fun items in what I believe they call an archive series. I bought the silver coloured Computron as a novelty. Enjoyed having it then sold again as never did find an occasion to wear it. That 50th looks snazzy. Perhaps I am off to find a local stockist here in the UK. The 50th could be a bit showy for me so Adam's choice might be the one. In the meantime enjoy the new watch. Thank you.
Beth Harmon wore a Bulova given by her mother in The Queen's Gambit
Adam your a man that now knows what real timepieces are, G-Shock, Luminox, Seiko, Tissot, Panzera and Bulova. Soooooo much greater engineered and incredibly built to go through any type of condition all the way to going to the moon. But for one thing if my beloved G-Shock was around in 1971 it would had been on the astronaut wrist, no doubt and you know it as well. Your Bulova is stupendous and Ivan is so cool and righteous!
20:14 The Omega did not have a Sapphire Crystal It is made of Hesalite.
$600 for a Seiko dive watch with a pressed clasp? No, no no no no
hay Adam i got my Bulova 2 years ago due to the history of it. i love it . It kick started my collection. i got mine for £450 good value. side note its made in the USA
Oh that’s cool :)
Great choice Adam!
Speaking of moonwatch there is one of the Omega Speedmasters that's in your brand colour : The Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8. I know it's a totally different price category but I just wanted to let you know this one because I think it would go very nice, one day (hope for you 😉), next to your Sub! I'm also a very big fan of this speedy model (well I own one) because the all black them and the, I would say, mango yellow in real life is SO stuning!
I’ll check it out
That band in the Bulova you put on is not a "true" NATO band, the band you put on is made of the same material, nylon, but the true NATO band does not pin to the watch, the band instead goes over the top of the pin then goes under the back of the watch then goes back over the opposite pin, this is case during combat you break a pin the watch won't go flying off your wrist unlike what would happen if you accidentally broke a pin on your watch with that "NATO" band. Your "NATO" band is simply giving you the look of one.
That Bulova you bought is a spectacular watch, good choice.
Good to know
The watch seller doesn’t know about that Tissot Seastar 2000. He said automatic 200 meter water resist. The 2000 stands for 2000 feet water resist, equals to 660 meter.
Then he said made by Omega when Tissot helped omega get on there feet.
Nice watch, going to try out the size for my wrists this weekend. Adam check out Seiko 7a28's and 38's similar styling, awesome mecha-quartz movements from the 80's you'll love them
Never heard of? That is a bold statement bro.
It’s almost like I wrote the title to get peoples attention and watch my video hey?! Crazy concept for somebody that earns their living from UA-cam I know 🤯
Got mine in 2019 for appolo 11 50 year anniversary. Also got the strap for the space suit.
The new Seiko presages are gorgeous!! I like it without the open heart though. White face and black bezel though 😍. Wearing it right now lol.
Unheard of?? This is the most famous moon watch, second only to the Omega Speedmaster. Got mine new for $335 last Wednesday, then went to Nathan's and got a Massive bacon burger. I Love leather, meat and bacon!
And what do you mean, "Bulova is unheard of???" They've been at it since 1875, six years before Seiko, dude!!
I got into watches when I was serving as a soldier ( British Army ) in West Germany as it was then. I saved and saved for months and bought myself a Omega Speedmaster on a Leather strap in 1976, which I still own! I also believe it or not a “Trump”watch for exercises and operations as it was much cheaper but still a mechanical movement.( It’s German made and still going strong). Since then I have acquired a Seiko titanium which tends to be my everyday watch a Ebel silver and Gold Chronograph and a Bulova chronograph. I had seen the watch you bought last year proved around £690 in a watch shop and always admired it. Enjoy your new watch
That’s awesome
I also have the Seiko Titanium and enjoy it as my everyday watch.

Thanks Adam. Hope Diesel is doing well? Enjoyed the content especially about the Bulova being also on the moon. I actually remember them landing, more because I had my first crush on a girl on chatted about it all the time lol
Could you do a video about haw to use all of the functions on the gshocks? I wanna know how to use the alarm
my wife got me this watch for my 50th birthday this year, one of my favorite watches in my collections.
I knew about the Bulova Lunar Pilot when it came out 6 years ago. Nice of you to catch up. Why talk down to your audience?
Hahaha, I didn’t realise you were one of my viewers. My humble apologies sir. I’ll ensure never to offend your highness again.
Hi IVYN thanks for selling me the Metal Casio DLC watch at the mall in LA. Ivyn is a great sales guy & very friendly ! If Ivyn was not around i I would have not bought the watch. He made me a Black Friday deal that I could not resist ! I am very interested in the BULOVA LUNAR PIOLET watch & hope to by it next time I am in LA . I also like the Hamilton Khaki King . I am sure IVYN will make me great deal!
I am looking forward to my next trip to LA .
BEST WISHES for 2024,
Nigel from Germany.
Tissot are class. Super well made Swiss watches.
This is hilarious. Adam goes in to get a Lunar Pilot (which I own) and happens to pick out my top watch, a Seastar 2000 Professional in Deep Blue on a bracelet. It has specs similar to a Planet Ocean but only costs around $1,000USD. I don't know how Tissot does it for the price (actually I do, they just don't push as hard when they bend you over)! 😁
Aw damn Adam, you should've bought the Seastar 2000! It's not 200m water-resistant, it's 600m!
I recently began hearing of Bulova as the American company and American watch that really doesn't get a lot of overwhelming respect. As a youngster I remeber an uncle in Biel Switzerland working at Bulova. I remember Grandad visiting his brother and the factory where he purchased a watch. So I always thought that Bulova was Swiss. Bulova did open a factory in Biel in 1912 and operated until it closed very sadly in 1983. Through those years, Bulova was very well known and highly respected in the world of Swiss horology.
I bought mine a year ago for £270 brand new. Super nice watch with a interesting story
AWESOME VIDEO!
Thanks Brett!
Good video and great watch. I have the same one and love it!
Nice watches! I totally agree about not having to spend too much to get a watch that is both good quality, and a pleasure to wear. I have a Tissot v8 that i really like.
👍🏻
That's one of the most well known moon watches in existence, I have one. Never heard of, LOL.
I have to say excellent work Adam, love the producer Michael show but definitely your videos give a insight to more obtainable watchs and things that are more realisticly achievable for the average person , A1
I love this little Watch store! Next time I’m visiting Corona Del Mar, I’m stopping by. Oh, I just picked up the Bulova Moon Watch. Had to have it.
Good choice Adam..I bought the exact same one years ago and wear it exclusively with the Velcro Nato also I still think it's the coolest and most true to the original with exceptional accuracy 😎👍
Yup!!
The video misses that there's a fourth version of the Bulova Lunar Pilot - a polished case with the 70s logo. So basically none of them are accurate - the titanium and black one in the video have the correct logo, but the wrong case. The one you bought has the right case, but the wrong logo. And the one not stocked has the right logo and slightly wrong case. The ideal would be the dial from the all black one inserted into the version you bought. That would be the most accurate.
Also a 5th version, which is the brushed case, new logo, with date, on a steel bracelet. That's the one I bought myself since I liked the brushed one most, and wanted the bracelet with the option of converting to another strap later.
It would be good to see a vdo on Gshock’s more expensive watches. The stuff that goes into them is amazing.
That original moon watch went for over 1.2 millon at auction nice watch looking at one myself
Lunar Pilot 262khz high accuracy like $3k Grand Seiko quartz. I have both can't go wrong. Also have 4 of the Seiko Prospex.
Oh, man. How did you miss the beautiful Edge 540 airplane in your back. I hope she is RC flyable. I own an Omega Speedmaster Pro Moon Watch with sapphire and I love it as my daily time. Also, I have been interested in knowing more about this Bulova moon watch. The titanium version is really beautiful. You made a great decision.
Never heard of Hamilton? I thought everyone did after Men in Black. Jealous though. I want the Hamilton Ventura, a little different than they one they showed. I do want the Bulova though. A nice affordable alternative to a Speedmaster.
Love this watch. Just wish it were a tad smaller
Great watch, I’ve learned something new and very interesting, enjoyed the vid , peace ✌️ 😎🌴
Thank you!
Awesome storytelling!
There is also a version with a high polished case in stainless steel.
Great video Adam...Not sure if you're familiar with them, love to get your thoughts on Xeric watches. Pretty unique pieces.
I got this watch last week and have been loving it!! Such a fun piece.
Awesome!
Quality improved when Citizen bought Bulova. Quartz though. Hmm. I am on an Auto kick but this one looks nice and unique.
Very cool, Man. Such a Great watch, wonderful salesperson/Businessman, very pleasant experience, seemingly.
I have never heard of it either…..I guess It’s known in watches community. (Snobbish comments by some peeps just watch the video and enjoy it and don’t be a snub to those who are enjoying watches )
Seiko all day, it makes me laugh when people will pay £500, for a fake rolex when you can buy a really nice genuine seiko for the same price, also citizen watches are nice for the money, very affordable.
i have 2 accufrons and i love them. space view 1965 and devils diver 666 (i believe )1968. love them
astronaut will be here soon i hope
It's a *cool* watch Adam. Shows people that knowledge makes something interesting and even fun and cool.
That's the one I'll offer to my brother, he has your stature, it's a big boy watch for big boy wrists 😂
I just received my Bulova Moonwatch a week ago and now I come across your video. Seems that we learned about the watch and bought it pretty much at the same time. For me - somebody who needs a watch and is interested in space programs and such - the Lunar Pilot is no brainer. Great price range in relation to the quality plus its history. I also went for the version you chose and I wear it on the NATO strap which, in my opinion, is the best choice for it. The watch is highly legible (in light and dark) and its dial is not too busy (the design itself reminds me of the lunar craters), it has fantastic mechanism / movement of hands and kinda elegant but also specialistic look - all of that makes wearing it a pleasure for me. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in buying it.
Awesome!
I prefer my Steel Bracelet Lunar Pilot over my MK1 1983 Rolex Sub Bicolour. Great watch.
Nice. Congrats! Treat yourself to a ladder-style bracelet to go with this Bulova😉you’ll see what I mean. Enjoy
OK there is another version of this which is polished and does not have the date complication as per the original it is based on. Personally I think its the best one as it looks gorgeous which is why i bought it 😁
Yup!
Version 1 (96A225)
Hey man, great choice! Hard to get more history for the price, a friend of mine has that watch on bracelet and the level of execution is amazing.
May I advise you to check out the Victorinox I.N.O.X Titanium.
It is a very tough quartz watch that is Swiss Made and is offered in 2 very cool color variants. You can find it on Amazon I'm sure.
Great video as usual, sorry for the long comment!
you have to geek up on watches @AdamSwords, haha, hey that's a good buy, I already got that one too, and tissot is not made by omega, they belong to the same group, swatch group!
I bought one about a year ago, but I got the model you missed from this video, the no date polished version on a black nato strap. I know the original wasn’t polished but it still looks the most like the original given that it hasn’t got the date complication. It gets quite a bit of wrist time and this constant barrage of people online saying it’s too big is rubbish, it’s fine on my seven and a quarter inch wrist.
There’s another version of this watch. It’s the 96A225 model. In my opinion it’s more faithful to the original. It’s a no date watch and the Font for the Bulova brand on the dial is the same as the original watch. They are all very good watches and I love the one I have
Adam go to new York empire state building and visit the Bulova museum and see the real deal moon memorabilia the museum is run by Bulova enthusiasts .
Hope you didn't pay full retail price for those, at least haggle a bit, or do what I do and go gray market and save $250
Check out the seiko 6139 pogue if your interested in space watches picked one up last year. Great history 👍
The price for that "moon-watch" is way out of hand... I can get those all day for around $275.00 to $300.00 max! 😳
I agree. They’re not even that price here in Australia.
They’re great value for the money. I have the strap version, had the bracelet but moved it on and picked up the 50th anniversary edition. It’s been a great watch with an awesome backstory and from a great American brand. Great video, like the format.
I like when he said “full automatic”. I normally buy semi autos as they tend to be 50 state legal. 🤣
Ahahahahahah
Just don't buy the fully semi automatic. You'll need your papers in order to get through the checkpoints. 😂😉
you could buy the same watch on amazon for $200 cheaper… and btw is one of the most popular watches of omega
Adam what size is your wrist, I have 7.5 inch and I’m looking to buy this watch 😃
