all back belts should learn from Dean - he is there to TEACH not to show he is better than a purple belt.
The most beautiful Jiu-Jitsu I’ve ever seen. Always entertaining to watch
so awesome to see instructors like Dean who let his guys work and fed him a bunch of submissions....that's so awesome.
It's also really cool to see the follow up to the purple belt examination.
That's the philosophy I live by. There are plenty of lower ranks that roll hard and want to win more than they want to learn. I find those kinds of students eventually drop out. I check my ego at the door which really speeds up the learning process. I enjoy Roy Deans video more than any others I've seen.
I'm a student of the art here in Portugal and I have to say that I'm most impressed with the technical level of Mr DaSilva. Congrats on your brown belt...
I have a few of Roy Dean's vids on both gi and nogi and they have been awesome instructional videos - have learned a tremendous amount and I really like his focus on the small things that make the technique more effective (or the fixes as to why it might not be working). I have no belt as do not belong to a formal school but have entered several tournaments and have used his moves to come in second place in my weight class on two occasions. One of best instructors out there for sure.
As a 2 year purple belt, watching this video has inspired and humbled me. This was a beautiful display of JiuJitsu, I can't remember the last time I saw somebody transition so smoothly with technical perfection.
I have much to learn and a long road ahead of me, congrats, this brown belt is well deserved
dunno how often i've seen this vid, but i'm still loving it.
I love the way Roy Dean seems to run his Academy, captures both the traditional, communal aspects, at the same time it really required his students to prove that they know their stuff, awesome, hope I can train there on day
Slended! Top class Brazilian jiu-jitsu and jiu-jitsu period
ive been a fan of bbj for a while but i have never done it this man's 2 vids have made me decide im doin it! great skills man
Very smooth! A beautiful display of the art of jiu-jitsu. Congratulations on your advancement, you deserve it.
I love the way all your guys move and roll! So smooth, beautiful transitions! Outstanding stuff!
I follow Roy Dean Academy + the Art of Juijitsu. I made fun of Roy when i 1st saw him speak and as i watch the quality students that he has produced I respect him more and more. I would love to visit his school!
The more I see of this academy and their beautifully smooth JiuJitsu the more I wonder if this might just be the best place in the world to study the art
It's one of the top tier for sure
Truly amazing..I had to keep rewinding it every ten seconds cause I did not believe what I saw. I am a blue belt under Luiz Palhares (got his black from Rickson)..the technique is mindblowing! Congrats!
This guy is amazing. Very nice technique. In my opinion he already looks like he's at a black belt level.
Great job man! I have to say I really enjoyed watching your smooth, patient and fluid Jiu Jitsu. Keep kicking butt and the best to all of you at the academy!
roy harris must weigh a 1000lbs in sidemount
Wow. Off all the demo videos Roy has posted, I don't think I've seen someone make him or Roy Harris tap so much- could be editing. Nonetheless, that was some superb jiu-jitsu. Quality stuff- Roy Dean should be proud.
Roy you have a great school and great students! You can tell that there is a very cool vibe there. Congrats!!
Congrats Jimmy on your brown belt excellent demo. Great style crisp clean flow. Nice to see Roy get tapped out even if it is an ankle lock x3. Roy excellent job training!
To be honest, BJJ is a combat sport, but the BJJ they teach here is a beautiful art, not only it's effective but it's just amazing to observe. Great job on painting a beautiful picture. Simply incredible!!!!!!!!!
roy, thanks for posting both of Jimmy's purple and brown belt tests, maybe I'll get my blue belt in BJJ some day
Sgt Donovan, WIlliam
USMC Black belt instructor
World Class technique. I love this way of testing.
The technique in this video is just plain beautiful.
Smooth and clean.
Very beautiful Jiu - Jitsu.
Congratulations my friend.
See you soon!
This is so beautiful.. Thank you guys for uploading this!
This guy was smooth as blue belt...great going on you brown bjj ! Great transitions..nice stand up too....Inspiring roy...thx !
@devinthedewd i watched all your videos, Devin, you have a lot of skill and talent. I'm surprised that at your level, you can't appreciate the beauty and execution of technique in this video. cheers
So fluid and graceful!
I am proud to be Brazilian. This is beautiful.
That was incredible. Just an amazing demonstration.
I couldn't tell you how many hours, but I could tell you he attends class pretty regularly (3 or 4 classes a week).
If you know Jimmy, you know that he is also fanatical about drilling. I know last year he had a grappling dummy that he would do drills on for hours a day, doing things like several hundred reps of armbar or guillotine a day.
fantastic! everything was so very smooth. great transitions!!!
Well deserved. congrats and good luck in the future.
@CNCTEMATIC: Yes, he is. His pain is utter exhaustion. If you're being tested for a belt upgrade, you will be pushed to the limits of your physical endurance, to see how you perform. When you have almost nothing left in your tank and cannot rely upon strength, all you will have at your disposal is your technique, and that is what your coach will be looking for.
it would be so awesome to train with all of these guys...you guys are great!

The belt ranks go like this:
white as soon as you walk into the school the first time
blue 1.5yrs after white
purple 1.5 yrs after blue
brown 1yr after purple
black 1yr after brown
There are belts after that, but you only need to worry about them if you plan to spend over 30 yrs practicing jiujitsu. The times I put down in yrs are approximate, if you go four days a week at least.
The belts don't mean much, it's the mat experience that really counts, as well as your attitude.
Great professor
im brazilian but i know that roy is a good professor just watching your rolling with your studnts
This is one of my favorite BJJ demonstrations!!! Awesome technique and very inspiring.
Beautiful. Worked very hard for that brown belt.
very nice. No matter how many times I watch this
This guy is awesome. I wonder how tall he is and how much he weighs. His technique is absolutely incredible.
Roy: am I correct in understanding that you are going at about 70% when you are testing your students? I get the impression that you're going slower intentionally so that you can judge whether or not they are good at actually finding the individual submissions. Otherwise I would find it odd that an end stage purple belt is able to repeatedly tap the instructor of his school. So... what is the goal you are setting for yourself as the instructor when you roll during this? Thank you for your time.
OMG!! That's the Boa himself!!
Great style. Really smooth and clean.
Love the music on these. Good demos my man.
@Agtren couldn't agree with you more my friend on the last part, attitude is everything, I used to feel bad for being a white belt for what felt like forever but I really appreciated the experience once I got my blue, I mean I'm still getting tied in knots lol, but the defense skills I learned as a white belt are helping me fend of subs longer and what not.
ye this dude gets it, good transitions
i think Roy rewarded him with submissions after jimmy busted some great moves...Yeah right you gona catch a black belt that easy.
@BlackShinobiShozoku The thing is, ending up on your back is not an accident as it is predictable and occurs consistently. Yes, many martial artists will try hard to avoid being put on their backs, but even great ones end up in that position sometimes. For the rest of us, it is even more common. The Guard as well as Positional Escapes of BJJ are important when you are on your back.
Roy Deans place is really cool! Lots of class. :)
Fantastic video. But what exactly are they doing when they come out of the back room?
That guy is fucking amazing. Wow, great job, dude.
those black belts didnt give him a hard time, i thought it was easy that make it easy for him, I barely see a black belt tap out for somene who is not a black belt also...I think they were just letting him to demonstrate that he has for sure a lot of technnics ,,,any way congratulations and i learn some of your moves to use in my rolls at academy also..thank you.
No he is great in Jiu jitsu
Nice takedown at 7:10. Caught Roy totally by surprise :)
Congratulations! Great video!
great video and a great depiction of the overall sport of bjj.
Thats Roy Harris incredible side control pressure. To be honest if he wanted he could have held him there for the day.
simply incredible, congrats!!!!
truly great martial artists, wow.
That guy is phenomenol!
thanks for the teaching
damn that was amazing, i always enjoy watching this little guy move does he have any videos when he competes on youtube
I think I saw him getting blue and purple before :) he bacame very solid I`m happy to see this fast improvements!!! think just 6 years of training OSU
This guy is really talented.
@hmeboy i meant no disrespect. would just like to see more application. I'm a major fan of Roy Dean and believe he puts together extremely well rounded fighters.
Maybe an obvious question; but is this guy earning his brown belt here?
Question 2 - why is he in pain at 8:18 ? I must be missing something but I can't see what part of him is being put under pressure. Cheers
@devinthedewd No worries my friend, I didn't think you meant any. I also would like to see that, I couldn't find any competition footage of Jimmy, which is unfortunate because I think he has incredible technique. Happy training!
Damn, that's ~45 manouvers that were perfected for this grading
Nice video!
Hope i'll gain this knowlege someday!
This video went down smooth.
in the end, it was David against Goliath ! :) Great Job !
Pardon the ignorance, but is this traditional Japanese JJ?
While on that topic, what's the difference between JJJ and BJJ?
about time... congrats
@uchideshi ohh, i see, should've been stressful for jimmy to have 3 black belts witness his brown belt demo.. what an achievement :)
i feel related bro, jiu jitsu is the best way to go for smaller pple
That guy is really good!!
Mr. Dean: It looks like you guys use HCK brand belts, I was wondering if the white bars on either side of the black sash meant anything or if they are just there because they look nice. Great videos by the way!!
This is so beautiful!
well done the best iv seen.....
Great video and techniques.
awsome!! very clean and precise.
this guys good i liked his purple belt video too
wow thats an awesome video... but did he really tap out his instructor that many times or were they helping him out???
I've seen Roy's recent second degree test (congrats to the man who brought all of these bjj videos!), where Jimmy was one of his sparring partners. Although I was a bit skeptical at first, I think Jimmy is on a steady road to Black Belt.
Jimmy Dasilva your a badass man!!!
Still waiting on DaSilva black.. did he get injured or move from your academy?
***** Thanks for the response Roy, very sorry to hear that but I'm sure he's doing great where ever he is!
***** No!!!!!! That is unfortunate
Congrats Jimmy on your belt promotion, looked great out on the floor
@wicked25 I am 42 -- I feel your pain. You may not be able to match a younger guy's cardio - but work on slowing down their pace. Work on strength endurance. Very slow push ups. Count five on the way up and ten on the way down. Same with pull ups and leg raises. Everything to work - not high rep but rather constant pressure. You will start to see you can hold and restrain easier - and set the pace- saving your cardio. Work these things on days off of jui jitsu. Yoga is helpful.
Very smooth, very technical display of BJJ.
Q: Did Mr Roy Dean give away the subs or did the student actually catch him?
jimmy is a beast
Forget the percentage, this was a demonstration. The student was allowed to move and continuously work throughout the entire process.
Beautiful.
This is Great , pure jiu jitsu no mma stuff
man this is nice! amazing stuff
Very nice work.
Jimmy got his purple belt in early 2007. I think his blue belt was 2004 or 2005 from Mr. Harris.
very nice takedowns
