  • This is so smooth, X11 screen capture always dropped like, all the frames. This is great.
To get PipeWire screen capture working I had to find out how to enable Wayland for my desktop environment. On Pop!_OS (actual spelling...) it turns out Wayland has been forced disabled for... reasons. I needed to edit /etc/gdm3/custom.conf and comment out a line that disables it. (For some reason, X11 and PipeWire don't seem to see eye to eye...)
To be fair there were some bugs that crashed my PC so I guess I can see why it's disabled for now, but look at how well this works! Once this gets less buggy this is it, the Linux desktop is here. Ask me about it... and maybe don't use Pop OS?
(And hmm whoops, I actually didn't notice my mouse cursor on the video. That can be disabled at least, but I think I'll have to look more into that!)

I am now running KDE Wayland under Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS "Jammy Jellyfish". (Yes it took me a while.) Screen capture using Pipewire is now working perfectly, and in fact KDE feels very good like this. However, it's still considered beta and there are some issues... in particular, turning the screen off while idle can cause your display to stop functioning and/or strobe. I recommend turning off screen energy saving if you're gonna do KDE Wayland under Jammy, especially if you have epilepsy.
I will try to record and post more demonstrations of the screen capture functionality!

While recording videos to use as an example, I noticed they were being frequently cut short. And OBS was using all my RAM! It seems this whole thing still has some bugs.

Hey, same cursor! I switched to Wayland a week ago, and you're right, it is sooooo much better for streaming/video capture lol. There are a couple odd bugs (absolutely can't play War Thunder in fullscreen for some reason) but I feel the benefits far outweigh the drawbacks

When it works anyway. I can't wait until that's more of a thing.
Back when I was more experimental I also found that some less mainstream desktop environments broke games, especially when setting fullscreen mode. (I use KDE on my gaming PC now.)

@@ObscureNForeign Yea, the only problems I really have with KDE Wayland at the moment are War Thunder not being able to be fullscreen, and for some reason the Steam popups are VERY dark. Not complete black, I can see them if I really focus, but they're pretty much just a black box

@@FoxyllAkora You know, I can't actually remember whether or not I switched to Gnome to record this video... I might've.
Regardless, KDE Wayland will surely be good to go within a few years... I can wait, it'll be wonderful when everything just works immediately. (Or maybe it already works if you use a more updated distro.)
