You really should be drinking more water, Mike. You will feel a lot better for it. Carbonated drinks can aggravate a hungry stomach too.

Drinking diet coke or other carbonated drinks during a diet is never a good idea.
The artificial flavoring effects the brain and it changes the insulin and ketone levels much faster.
This basicly means that you feel the hunger and illness a lot more.

MrGreenYeti I wasn't referring to insulin resistant people. The brain effect of drinking carbonated drinks lowers the insulin level and increases the ketone levels with a very small amount according to medical science about diets. This effects makes you more hungry.

Pepsi max and the like actually make you hungrier (If I've read it correctly) They make you crave calory rich foods. So stick to water and tea.

There's a difference between undercutting your needs at your present weight, activity, and tissue distribution, and eating as little as is considered safe without medical supervision.
seigeengine Well to be fair, anytime you start a diet you should be consulting your doctor anyways. They'll tell you whether or not a diet is safe for you or if you should be seeing a nutritionist.

+mark maron It's zero-calorie soda. There's nothing in it that can add to your weight.. fat comes from excess sugar energy in your body being turned into stored energy, and pepsi max has no sugars.

No, it's not healthy.. In fact, aspartame (the sweetener in most diet sodas) makes me sick within a couple of hours of drinking it.. and there is a lot of evidence to support that it can have very negative long-term effects on your health if you consume it all the time.. but it doesn't negate the effect of following a calorie-control diet, which is what you implied, and what I was responding to.
Sure, it's easy to look like you still have a point if you change the topic of discussion.. but don't do that. The point of these "week on" experiments is to see if he can lose weight (hense why he weighs himself at the beginning and end), not to argue whether or not he's poisoning himself with questionable food additives. If you want to discuss that, let's start with all the preservatives and other chemicals that get added to processed foods like Slimfast products, in the first place.

i would like to point out that the diet information says a 600-800 calorie dinner... that dinner was probably 1500+. really the only thing that makes slim fast work is that you are consuming less calories per day. as long as you consume less than 2000 calories, you should have steady weight loss regardless of what you eat (you could eat nothing but oreos)

+Xicor Seriously! I'm on a lean cuisine/smart ones diet, and watching him casually drink a soda and eat a huge dinner like that is just frustrating because it's negating the whole point of the diet.
That part at the end of "I finally feel full and happy", after disregarding the diet and "cheating". The first few weeks of a diet isn't meant to be easy, especially when you're 200+ pounds.

+Xicor No, that dinner was not 1500 calories. I ran a recipe through a calorie counter. If the chicken and red pepper pesto had pine nuts in it, 1 serving is 696 calories. Without the pine nuts, 639 calories. One cup of plain cooked couscous is about 175 calories. I'll estimate Mike had 1.5 cups (erring on the high side). So the dinner was 900-1000 calories.

Mix the shake with lots of coffee and cinnamon. I do 75-90% coffee the reminding 10-25% is the shake. With two or three large cups of coffee sipped over the morning, you can get it down. I’m going to try 9ne shake a day, the rest real food. I add cardamom too but that’s unique to me.

Add a handful of porridge oats to your morning milkshake. The resulting goo expands in your stomach and gives you the impression of feeling full.
Do you wake up hungry? I wake up and sometimes I am hungry and other times I don't eat for most of the day, if at all.

it's the sweeteners saccharin and cyclamate. also used as appetite enhancers to fatten pigs. i find sougary drinks dont make me much more hungry, the body actually get's the carbs, that the flavor promises. a glass of diet coke (or so) or using sweetener tablets in your tea on an empty stomach can makes your blood sougar drop, often to unpleassant levels, and your stomach grumble almost painfully.
+Snarfindorf ugh, ya.. soda ("diet" sodas included) are the WORST thing to drink when trying to lose weight, they increase hunger. The best way to feel full after a large meal is to drink a large quantity of water, 1 litre of water will keep you feeling full for a good while (a bit bloated, but not really hungry) whereas even a bit of soda will simply make you hungrier even after you just ate something. That and soda in general is bloody poison for the body.
Hathur Actually aspartame has been extensively studied and nobody has conclusively proven that it's dangerous for human consumption. That being said, it can have some side effects such as drowsiness, general feeling of being unwell etc.

The Slimfast meal plan is a little flawed since they have you eat your large meal for dinner instead of lunch. Your metabolism is more active during the middle of the day so you will naturally burn off more calories you eat in that time. Also you wouldn't be feeling so starving all day and you won't be tempted to overeat for dinner. Hope you'll try switching your lunch and dinner meals and see if it makes a difference for you :)

Keep on hammering man. You're lucky; I just had to force down some fried ramen noodles with vegetables (boil the noodles, then fry them in peanut oil, sesame oil for taste). I was weak so I added some chicken breast to it. Remember, nothing tastes as good as being thin feels!
are you drinking 2 litres of water a day? if not, maybe the reason you're always feeling hungry. have 2 shakes/bars a day, allowed 3 snacks that's 100 calories are less and a since you're male, a 800 calorie meal.
I guessed right, Hes had the Cafe Latte for breakfast.
May I recommend tea? Unsweeted tea when you feel hungry.

God, that diet looks rough. I did the Special K diet for the two weeks and it wasn't even that bad. o.o The cereal was a bit more filling than just having a cereal bar for a meal.
Need to get stuff you will not hate or it is pointless. Best not to get too strong flavours or you will get sick of them. Ended up with just having the vanilla flavoured shakes until I got sick of them.

Even the people who make Soylent say you shouldn't make it exclusive to your diet. It's meant to replace about one "convenience" meal a day, not be a food replacement.

Actually, fructose, which makes up ~67% of the sugar in apples, is the type of sugar most associated with the bad effects of a high sugar diet. There is no "good sugar". The only benefit to getting the sugar from an apple (or any fruit) is that the accompanying fiber slows down the metabolism of the sugar, meaning the energy will last longer and you won't "crash".
The banana Mike is eating has a similar level of both fiber and sugar as an apple (per gram), but has a lot more nutrients. He should continue eating the banana, but switch to eating it on camera; for schadenfreude.
+fedos Seems as though today "everything" is bad for you. Today it's sugar, tomorrow it'll be something else and sugar will be good for you. Quite frankly, I eat what I want....I just do it in moderation.
Having a proper home cooked meal for tea spoils the fun of this a bit. You really half-arse these challenges (which are hardly torturous in the first place).
I did the slimfast thing a few years back and the chocolate tasted horrid, sounds like it's gotten better. That pesto looked good!

I often don't have much for breakfast as I struggle to have an appetite early in the day. A cuppa and maybe a couple of biccies is enough.
Then 1130-1330 I'm often peckish and want a regular ISH lunch.
Then dinner is my big meal around 1930
I might snack between lunch and dinner.
I'm not a huge person but I think I need to eat somewhat frequently.

+MiniMackeroni Those "candy bars" are actually very high in protein and fiber. Both of those help to keep you full longer than you would expect, it suppresses your appetite. So a bit more than just a regular candy bar.

I respect your feelings.. but like.. Is this really that bad? A shake, a bar and a snack on the day and then a big meal on the evening seem pretty cozy to me? I mean compared to other diets.
I am someone that do not need to eat so often or much, though, so I apologize if I sound not so sensitive.

+Herman Langland It basically suger and empty calories no vitiams and minerals until dinner. So he is practically starving himself during the day and feasting a night. A shake or bar should be a snack. not a meal.

I've had those chocolate crunch meal bars and they're lush but fucking hell do they make you fart. It turns you into a cow basically. Farting aaaalllll day.
These drink meals also will make your bowel movements a horror. I used to help at an elderly care facility and the patients that could only drink things like that had nightmare BMs.
If each snack is under 100 kcal, just have a load of carrot/cucumber/celery... you could literally have a whole salad for 100 kcal. Would stop you being so hungry.

Slimfast is a part liquid diet.
This hurts to watch. This is a crash diet. You will lose weight very quickly but it's only temporary. You're very likely to binge and gain it all back quickly. It's better to just eat slightly less and get some exercise, try to lose 1-2 lbs a week and sustain it for a longer period of time if you're serious and not just fucking around for our entertainment.

It's day 2 for me and I'm not as hungry.
But, I had the high protein chocolate smoothie and at 1030 am, the slim fast ddbl chocolate chip.
At 4am, I had 3 big bowls of salad.
Tonight at 6pm dinner, salad again
and now he is drinking soda rather than water.......

Kemikal Sodium causes a person to retain water, Caffeine can screw up some diet plans.
P.S. WATER is supposed to be consumed when eating protein bars, they specifically state this on most of them.
Antinull I hardly think that a small bottle of Pepsi Max could have any measurable effect. Also caffeine might interfere with exercise but not the food intake or digestion itself.
That meal bar would fill you up if you didn't normally over eat. That's why you have to diet. You eat too much.

Mike this is all going to be a waste of time. Unless you change what you were eating that made you fat you will put on all of the water weight you are losing when you stop the Slimfast. The way you are moping around after only two days I think that you will blow way past 204 lb once you eat again.

Also, carbs are not a problem.
After a day on those restrictive caloric intake he should be getting a good chunk of fat and carbs in the evening meal.
