Hi, I personally supervised a team to erect our 58 pattern ponchos (in use at the time 1987) as a line of lean to's against a stone wall in wet weather. They were fastened onto the wall with tent pegs and pegged onto the grass. It certainly kept us dry throughout the night for a good night's sleep. Exmoor 1987, 17 port and maritime workshop REME.
nice to see those tarp poles in action, and your set up, i bought them and have never set a tarp up yet, everyone else seems to use trekking poles, nuce one.....
Good video mate, keep them coming. I've used the BA Basha absolutely loads of times, on the ground in many formats, also over hammocks, and in some dismal weather. Absolutely love the idea of the shower bottle, I've always used bath waste pipe (not great) and I've never bothered to think outside the box (well pipe) . Thank you, ,
used them for 25+ years, ... the issue ones weigh approx 1Kg but their very robust and reinforced, originally the army used the 58-pattern (olive drab) poncho, ... when goretex clothing came on issue the poncho aspect pretty much became obsolete, hence why the head hole/hood generally disappeared.
Yes you are correct, I thought that after making the video, this is a generic tarp and lighter than the issue one. This one weighs 800g for basha, paracord, clips and poles, and it weighs 1.3kg with the pegs, although these pegs are the hefty steel storm ones, could make it lighter with alloy ones.
Looks like a tarp not a poncho. The guidelines are good to ventilate humid air in the first configuration as condensation will build and under tent gets very wet. I think you are right but you'd want to test your theory by using it in various conditions, you might find various issues that don't make it great. You should make a video of yourself in it in heavy rain cold and get back to use. Ponchos are smaller. I wonder with ponchos why not set up poles on the diagonal for more leg space, will the coverage be that bad and you get rained on hm. Thanks for demonstration.
The only think with these cheaper tarps the are not as configurable as a proper bushcraft tarp that has 19 tie points allowing you to do so much more. Example tarp tent setup with one pole, also the eyelet tarps don’t last or wear as long as the above tarp either you get what you pay for with tarps. The best being DD if on a budget check out Plant Gear tarp another excellent tarp I have both highly recommended.
This has a seam, so will certainly leak over time, if it's a genuine British army one or similar spec, they have a rubber coated seam, this rubber coated is faces the rain and makes the seal much more water tight.
Good video mate! The BA basha has become probably my favourite piece of kit. I did a wild camp video a couple of months back using a setup with 2x poles and a closed back to give a bit more wind protection. Just subbed 👍 Would appreciate it if you took a lookover at my channel 😁
Used to use the olive green poncho 70s-80s, set it up properly it's as good as a tent.

Horse was brilliant. Came in looking for the 6 corners of the poncho 👍🏻🤪🤪🤪

Finally someone does against a fence line....used it all the time in nz
I've got one of those. Thank you for this.
Enjoyed the video, I use poles cut to 39 1/2”. They give good headroom.
i remember i had to sleep in one during army , must say ,one of the worst when it rains heavy
0:47 “6 of the corners” I think you’ll find there’s only 4 corners 😂
Funny Mare.... She was born with the desire to be a pop star... :)
Good video.. I remember sleeping in the bivvy bag with my feet inside my Bergen for a quick bail out
Can one man put it up or do you need a horse to help normally?
Its a good system.
Yes i have used simular in my service days.
Look like you have a friend in a horse.

Thanks, hope it goes well
@@51North Cheers buddy
A British Army poncho has a hole and hood for your head and you would synch it up when using it for your Basha.
but does look like a nice poncho
It's not a poncho, a poncho is also a garment that fits over your head as well.
The ones I have used tend to leak on seams after being used for some time. Is there seams on this model?

lol love the random horse that gets in the way aha
He gets the crazy idea you're laughing at him.
LOL at the horse. It was neigh bother, though.
I do this all the time saves me from carrying my tent
Hi, thx for the video. Which basha poles are you using and cordage for corners/eyelets? Cheers.
The poles are just the cheap ones on eBay. Think they are made by webtex, and using para cord on the corners.
Surely any tarp that has been water proofed shouldn't be used to collect water as you'd be consuming chemicals.....
Jason is that you? not sure how you popped up on my youtube, hope your ok buddy, been ages, rav 131
Yes brother. Hope you are well
