      I liked the review, but if he thinks a .47” DLP is giving a million to 1 contrast he doesn’t know much. That optima is 1000:1 at best and the 5040 is 5000:1 at best, with the 4010 somewhere in the middle. It’s just the technology and what it’s capable of, and the reason he had no clue why the Epsons were larger and heavier.

    The thing I like best about electronics and testing them for yourself in your own setups. Buy at store, test and review, return or exchange... repeat. Projectors can easily get difficult to compare since some are drastically different technology's used and picture quality can be based on screen type, size, light, sunlight, throw, and distances all differentiate with the models I have used. Hands down, the Epson 5040, 5050ub or 3020 and 4010 models are my favorite over all other models i have experienced. Not the easiest product to just try out and return if your not satisfied. Great video!!

    The colors can be adjusted. The DLP is a dustless solution as no dust can enter the optics. The 3lcd has air moving over the lcds or they burn and discolor. They will eventually be dusty like your furnace. DLP sounds weird for a first time buyer but once the precision is realized, the dustless optics are just icing on the cake. And the default color is your fault.

    • @butterflyadmirer4358
      @butterflyadmirer4358 4 роки тому

      Yeah when I bought my first projector, I wanted it to work like my big screen. The LCDs seemed solid state and the best solution, but after owning a DLP, I want a projector that works like a projector, not a TV

    • @lancekimpelton5931
      @lancekimpelton5931 4 роки тому

      I was eyeing the top of 1080P and the bottom of 4K and settled on the Viewsonic 4K. Glad I did, we do some wood working so the dust was a major concern. We are always doing projects and we track a little dust, forthermore the projector is electrostatic by nature and it is wonderful to know that the dust is locked outside of the optics. Plus most brands use the Texas Instruments DMD chips. If they are good enough to make my college calculator, they are good enough to make my projector.

      One more thing to notice is the baseboard underneath the projectors needs a bulb change.

    For what it’s worth, you made a great choice with the new Epson.
    But, if you want to get the most out of the UB, your system will benefit a lot with some darker colors for your walls and ceiling surfaces.
    I was happily surprised when I toned down the walls in my own media room and discovered what Epson “ultra black” really looked like.
    Well worth the effort. I guess this is why all commercial movie houses are caves.

      I personally would choose a 1080p projector with better colors than that. Although I'd appreciate the extra details that 4k would provide, I think the poor color brightness of the px 747 would be enough to ruin the experience for me as it would be more noticeable than the loss of detail going from 4k to 1080p.

      I have the ViewSonic pjd7720hd and the color and contrast are great for a $500 pj. I do think that you can put these images side by side and see what the extra money buys, but if you have $2000 to spend, there are some very large TV's that will destroy all these projectors in picture quality.
      The $500 to $1000 price range is the sweet spot for projectors, in my opinion. Beyond that, large TV's start to compete.
      The cheaper projectors are also more portable if that matters, easier to mount, and a little less obtrusive in the room.
      Personally I use my projector for backyard movies and enjoy the portability in the house to just shoot it at a wall...I have no intention of replacing my 60-inch 1080p plasma in the family room with a projector or 4k TV any time soon. All the content is still 1080p/1080i/720p.
      The plasma is hands down better image than the pjd7720hd, but the magic of the projector's huge image makes it great for movies.

  • @AndyGrimm

    The reason you can't tell the difference between the 5040 and 4010's black level is because you're using a white screen in a room with light walls and a white ceiling. You're getting a ton of reflections back on the image. If you blacked everything out, or at least did it around the screen you would notice better blacks with the 5040. Good review though. I'm seriously about to buy the 4010 because of it.

    • @matthewphillips5483
      @matthewphillips5483 Місяць тому

      If you went through blacking out the room with black velvet, you would get better performance from the 4010 than you would get with the 5050 in a regular room. Treatment > native contrast.

    • @AndyGrimm
      @AndyGrimm Місяць тому

      @@matthewphillips5483 Eh, it's not that simple, actually. If you treat a room with black velvet then it shows the projector's raw performance, thus exposing the higher black levels. Since writing this comment I've gone through the 4010, treated my room with black flock, a 5050, a JVC x790, and have now written multiple projector reviews. Treating a room with black velvet is a double edged sword. You get great blacks with mixed scenes but now dark scenes are being compared to the pure black of the velvet, which makes them not appear dark enough.

  • @billreddy7593
    @billreddy7593 3 роки тому

    Even though it's not a HUGE purchase, you don't wanna get buyer's remorse.
    And "specs" can vary (like car stereo amps touting 400 watts, which is really 200W per channel peak, and actually 100 watts RMS) and in some reviews, they'll measure the contrast ratio and state it's 40% of the advertised value.
    But creating a spreadsheet is a good idea to rule out projectors that won't fit your screen, or aren't bright enough for your environment, or don't have a specific feature you're looking for...
    EXCELLENT job. If I buy one, I'll go through your affiliate link.

    Great video. What happens with the chip-shifting 4K basically is this: Lets say you have a 4K image as a source. Instead of projecting it full resolution natively, what it does is to divide this 4000p image in four 1080p groups, and displaying one right after the other so fast than it creates the complete full 4K image to your eyes. Again, with only 1080p max capacity.

      I agree, these are all 100% not calibrated, I've seen other videos of the viewsonic and there is no way the colors on it look that dull. Either he calibrated some to make them look better, or he just set them up out of the box and did nothing.

  • @painterdood2484
    @painterdood2484 5 років тому +1

    One other thing,
    Virtually all new projectors are in need of some fine tuning or calibration out of the box. Manufacturers are doing better in recent years with out of the box performance but even so, every projector I’ve owned over the last 25 years including my current Epson 5040 benefited from this process. You can save a lot of time and get a better picture by getting a inexpensive from calibration disc from Amazon and spending a few minutes with the wealth of fine tuning features you have in the setup menu.
    Proper setup for a projection system is a bit of work.
    But the reward of a 16ft wide theater screen in YOUR OWN HOME! Is well worth the effort.

    Today is 2022, 5050UB is about $3200 on Amazon and 4010 is about $1999, about $1000 more and if you are not in a full dark room, which means the wall and floor should be dark as well to reduce the reflection, to get pure black, 4010 is a best in those range.

Epson wins all the way. I suspect this has got to do with DLP being an inferior technology to LCD.

    You should have used PX727 not PX747. PX747 is not for home theater. HC 4010 looks fantastic! Love the sharpness.

    Thank you for your review. If I may add an information about the size of the beamer housing. It does matter in terms of fan noise. In general the larger the cavities for the cooling air flow is, the slower the fans rotate, hence, the beamer runs quieter.

    Great job lining up the footage. That had to be a challenge. I'm surprised the 5040ub didn't seem as sharp as the 4010. Did you have the 4k enhancement on? I have a 5040ub and its super sharp, but only after I turned on the 4k enhancement. Also the Optoma is a DLP projector vs the Epson LCD projectors: hence the color difference. Alot of people say DLP is more cinematic. Great video.

    A few things I’d like to chip in. First off the projectors were probably played in the ‘out if the box settings’. I wouldn’t discount the view sonic on the basis of factory settings. It’s cheap yes, it won’t hold up against the others as well, but for the price you’re paying you can easily get to about 75% sdr video quality. The difference between the 4010 and 5040 comes during playback of 4K hdr. Not only is the 4010 hdmi slower, but also the extra contrast and lumens help you achieve a much vibrant image with color accuracy and not losing details in the sky or night scenes.
    I’m running the epson 5040ub and you have to believe me when I tell you that watching calibrated hdr on my 133” CinemaScope black diamond is awesome. Switching to HDR is another beast altogether. It’s crazy to watch 10bit 4:2:2 bt2020 image. Now when I go back to original settings and start watching SDR content, I feel there is something wrong with my projector.
    HDR settings on the 5040ub are a little tricky though. I had a lot of issues getting it right, but trust me once you do, it’s life changing.
    Another note to people watching this video. All devices process HDMI differently. So HDR/SDR on say nvidia shield/ps4/roku/cable box etc. will require you to tweak the settings a bit for optimal image.
    PS a professional screen calibrator charges a bomb. Buy a calibration disk and get your hands dirty. As projector bulbs get older they lose the brightness anyways (people say 1000 hours, I’m at 1200 without a noticeable difference). Hope this long comment helped.

    I started out using optima projectors but they tend to become problematic and the bulb life ate bery short. Now I run the Epson 3010 no problems. I agree the Epson 4010 does have the best overall picture. Good video thumbs up to you.

    Nice comparo, thanks. The Optoma's lack of decent black is disappointing, but not unexpected. The 5040UB is ever so slightly superior to the 4010, but few of us have either the truly dark room or the extra dollars to spring.

    Thanks for the side by side comparison, too many reviewers just throw out a ton of information without explaining anything, I too would agree that the Epson 4010 is a much clearer image which I would have thought with the higher brightness being 1,000,000:1 on the 5040ub it would perform better but I couldn't take my eyes off the Epson 4010 for how clear the image was.

    Literally no point in this video. They're all from different price ranges so the result are obviously reflect this..... you might want to be stingey and say "well actually the most expensive epson wasn't the one I picked" that's irrelevant when both are high priced.
    There's also no point ragging on the viewsonic then writing it off for being the worst when it's 1/3 the price. Your video message is literally "buy the expensive epson its better!" Well yeah, obviously?
    Linus Tech Tips has the viewsonic as his "ultimate theatre setup" so something tells me that you haven't calibrated any of these projectors correctly. The side by side comparison shows this. But anyway for 99% of people who would rather keep their money for other things, price for performance is key, so ragging on the viewsonic then writing it off when its 1/3 the price doesn't sit well. You can get a much better image from the two cheaper options using their settings but you glossed over it and didnt show you trying to do so. This might as well be an advert for epson.

    Epson wins, the 4010 is sharper because of the 16 glass elements lens from Fujinon Japan
    Is dumb to build a native 4k projector, with bad optics or cheap lens, bad lenses causes uneven focus and focus hot spot, practically impossible to focus the entire screen accurately.

    Great review. Only thing I think you could have added is a noise comparison. I would guess that the Epsons are larger for better cooling and quieter operation. Unfortunately it looks like the 5040UB is no longer available and the 5050UB is a crazy $1000 more than the 5010 so I think that your choice is definitely the way to go
