Do You Need a Dumpling Maker for Perfect Dumplings? - The Kitchen Gadget Test Show
Вставка
- Опубліковано 25 кві 2018
- On today's episode of the Kitchen Gadget Test Show, Choi is battling her handmade dumpling skills against a stainless steel dumpling maker that retails for $7.99 here: amzn.to/2I1. But as Choi quickly points out, the dumplings made by the dumpling maker end up looking more like ravioli - since the small tool triples as a means for making ravioli and perogi, too.

My mom was probably bad at making dumplings
Aquarium & Birds love you buddy
@Jason Smith i don't remember why i said that, ill have to watch the video again ro know
Jason Smith because in the vid she said there is a saying if you make a bad dumpling you make an ugly child
Jason Smith r/wooooooooosh
that less dumping more empanada
You mean dumpling?
i prefer the dumplings!
That's exactly what I was thinking! Not so great for dumplings but perfect for empanadas. And it looks exactly like empanada presses that I've seen over the years. I think the marketers are trying to reach another segment. The handmade dumplings are obviously superior.
It would be a good tool for small empanadas
That’s the reason for the weird shape! Exactly what I was about to comment
I remember trying to learn how to make dumplings, but never could do it right. A few years later on a whim, I made dumplings and made them quite quickly and quite well. Not sure why, but something happened.
But definitely do it by hand like Choi did.
I have a set of these and I've learned that they work better with fresh dough rather than premade wrappers. I got mine with a cookbook and they range from 1.5 inches to 8 inches. Pretty nice. They make good hand pies.
I way prefer the beautiful pleating by Choi. Seriously. The crimped dumplings look odd to me...like weird, fake, unappetizing sea creatures. Another great Esther Choi episode. 👍
Tosh T They remind me of mezzaluna ravioli.
Those were normal pierogi, they don't look ugly or odd its a traditional Polish dish soooo.
Awwww I like the weird unappetizing sea creatures lol. My dumplings are questionable so I bet it could be helpful for me.
the handmade is so BEAUTIFULLY MADE
Okay, so I just had to comment this. I'm from Poland and we are famous for "dumplings" which are called 'pierogi' and what you were using is maker for exactly this kind. The dough for pierogi is much thicker then what you have and another thing is that you are using this "gadget" wrong. I still remember my great-grandma using this (it was plastic not metal).
Haha, I love Esther's little anecdotes. Reminds me of when my grandmother would tell me to finish my rice or my future wife would have tons of pimples. 1 pimpler per grain of leftover rice.
Have seen numerous of the videos with this host, and one thing I really like is that she usually seems very objective and doesn't try to enhance a fail like some do.
Keep her, she is doing an awesome and objective job and comes across very sympathetic imo.
seems it's more of a pierogi maker (considering the seal shape)
Evvi Magpie it's actually is a pierogi maker :)
The thing is, that is not a dumpling maker. It’s an empanada or pay maker...
or pierogi - these look exactly like Polish pierogi
Unless it is advertised as dumpling maker
Your Waifu Sucks but isn't 'dumpling' the overall category, with pierogi, gyoza, mandu and so on falling under it?
Dumpling makers are often used to make dumplings in Poland because they make dumplings a lot more even in less time. Only grandmas nowadays know how to do beautiful ruffles. But pierogi's dough is a lot different so that makes sense.
And in perogies case you absolutely don't need to fold them before hand.
You might not be proud of your dumpling making skills, but it is very impressive
I don't that was meant for dumplings. In my country we use the shaper to make puff pastry turnovers (curry puffs, sardine puffs, etc.)
Esther should keep in mind people with fine motor difficulties. This would be a great device for people with arthritis also.
Well I'm glad the maker worked because I've never made a dumpling in my life but I have a maker just like the one you used.Watching you gives me a little confidence that they won't turn out too bad for a first timer, thanks.
Aren’t we all born with dumpling makers? 🤲
please somebody find ja rule so you don't have hands?
Some Asian moms will also tell you they give birth to dish washers, so they don't need one.
I think is more for empanadas than dumplings, in Mexico lazy people (or people who can't make the "ruffle" part ) use for make empanadas.
Never seen an empanada that small
I love the finished edges on yours. I have seen so many beautiful different ones. I've tried several times and can't get the knack of it. I bought one of these gadgets (haven't used it yet) in the hopes that I can put more filling in it without it coming out. I'd love to have one as full as the frozen ones I can buy. Thanks for sharing!
*me: takes 5 minutes to fold two*
I hope you could share the filling recipe. Looks tasty!:) thanks for the video
I think Esther’s mom was a very talented dumpling maker
I watched your video because I'm making dumplings today, and my girlfriend (the Asian half) offered to bring over a dumpling maker she uses for making empanaditas. I think we'll make a fun afternoon of it by racing to see which method makes more dumplings : )
When i make dumplings, every single one becomes a new design😁
And that's with their own signature pattern which makes them very unique.Because i cant recreate them ever again🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😂
love her, doing great
"Ugly dumplings, ugly babies." Sooo Korean Grandma
Thank you the comparison. I wish I could make the dumplings the original way without the air bubbles from the dumpling mold but, due to a stroke a few years ago, I only have use of one arm/hand. I am now grateful that I can at least make a close kind of gyoza😉
we use it to make pan frying types of dumplings, we also got a set of 3 from a garage sale
The handmade ones look really good!
I do not have 30 years experience. You rock. I need this🤜🏻
I just found a lotus shaped Bao maker online- I’d love to see a similar test of it versus made by hand!🤷♀️👍🏻
You're Awesome! You almost made the whole dumpling before you put it in the device... I you only used the maker you would've be beat it. Keep up the awesome vids!
If you made the dumpling skins slightly larger then you wouldn't have to fold the dumpling before using the dumpling maker
Also, if you put in more filling then it would have been more "plump" as you put it and also there wouldn't be any air pockets either or risk of them exploding.
her using that thing was like OJ tryin on the glove, "it doesn't fit!" lel.
Ester is such a cute dumpling.
that thing is great for making puff pastry filled with stuff ^^
I love making gyoza, the part of making it is sitting down watching TV and spending an hour or so making crab Rangoon and gyoza. Like idk it's an activity for me
That dumpling maker was used to be my lola's empanada mold. Its my first time to see it for dumplings.
OK........ as much a I love gadgets.... YOU convinced me to try "grandma's" style and NO Air Bubbles!
How did you get all the wrapper at same size? Are you using machine for that or is it by hand made. Very impressive.
You can get 2 different sizes at the store. I'm not sure what she does, but if I make my own, I use a cookie cutter. Tip: sprinkle corn starch between the layers so that they don't stick together.
That dumpling maker is like what some people use to make Gujiya (Indian dessert) here in India. It has that exact shape of a Gujiya. Even I have it at my home but we barely use it, hand folding is the best.
Dumpling having an identity crisis lmao Love it
Those machine made dumpling look better than mine lol
ziljin you comment on everyyy video I see, Tara's kul for example.
ylli rustemi haha cool!
her dumplings are so niceeeee
I mean we all have to be impressed that she was able to use the machine to make 3 in 3 minutes and 35 seconds, but she learns very quickly, and is able to turn out 6 MORE in only 6 seconds: 1:56 followed by the pesky last one that took almost 40 seconds.
I like how she said let’s try the shape and eats the first on in one bite and the second one half a bite.
This! Pop the whole thing in your mouth like you did the first one!
You can actually put the filling and seal in the dumpling maker in one go, just that you need practice.
how do you wash the dumpling gadget?
I'm wondering if you make your dumpling dough yourself. I've not been able to find any so I was wondering if I could make them myself.
i like how this person alone has decided how a dumpling should look like despite there is a whole world of dumpling out there.
Great episode!
10 perfect dumplings in 4.5 mins. It took me that long to make a single crap looking one.
Good and funny comparison
In The Netherlands this device is being sold to make ravioli or other kinds of stuffed pasta.
"Ugly dumpling, ugly baby." Words to live by.
what kind liquid in the bowl? Thanks
i've tried to make dumplings by hand three times, and mine weren't as beautiful as yours, but i bought a dumpling maker for 1.75$ and i think it might work for me, but i'd rather make ones like your hand made ones
People use that in Malaysia for making curry puffs. First time I'm seeing someone use it for dumplings. It looks exactly the same so I'm not sure if it's really a dumpling maker.
Get someone who has never made dumplings before to do the test and you will see that the device perform much better.
Okay now a homemade dumpling making video
where can i find the recipe for the filling?
Both are yummy!!!
UGLY DUMPLING UGLY BABY! LMFAO. Sounds like my mom. SAVAGE AF.
This device looks more like for empanadas. I should practice more with dumpling making, especially with making bao. For some reason mine always opens up.
My God she rode hard for her handmade dumplings ....lol
in middle east we use plastic dumpling maker for home made samosa
Can I have your dumpling recipe please? Also a good recipe for dumpling dough? There are so many different ones but I just want a proven and tested good one
Another Gateway Gadget. Great.
YAY MORE SHOW
The dumpling gadget looks like someone took the fake teeth in the dentist's office and used it to make dumplings.
A bowl of dumpling filling some Wonton skins and 20 to 30 minutes and you can genuinely get the Rhythm for dumpling making
Don't know if it's a traditional thing, but these are different to what we usually call dumplings in the UK. A dumpling here is boiled fat and flour, and we call these wontons.
Alfred of Wessex I think these are called dumplings everywhere else in the world
You win! Your dumplings look way better/appetizing than the device.
I was today years old when I learned perogi makers suck at making potstickers, a completely different dish
I would take Choi and her hand made dumplings!
I LOVE YOU CHOI
Can you share the dumpling recipe?
That mold is what we called currypuff mold in malaysia. Its like empanada
The comedy factor here is great. Also that gadget is not a dumpling maker.
Though I like guo tie more, boiled dumplings are better in winter with like a hot warm soup.
I think dumplings are a communal thing where 4-5 gals get together , catchup, gossip, socialize for an evening on an assembly line type thing and each go home with a 50-100 of them... Kind of like Lumpia.
I had a plastic one 30 years ago, I think I used it once.
More Esther!! 😊
The dumpling maker is more pierogi (polish) type of. Its not ugly! Xd
That looks like the empanadilla makers we use in pr
These are good if you make the dough yourself as it saves you time from cutting, but if the dough is already premade just fold them by hand.
I am still deciding on wether to buy one of those or work on my skill (which is at ~0 at the moment). The air bubbles which makes it wet inside are a red flag for me. I still have a few videos to work through until I make up my mind, but I guess I will come back to this one for the last 30s of that video
would you pretty please share the filling recipe?
+Eater do you make your own dumpling skins?
Oh, this girl is such a cute dumpling.
I knew you were Korean!!! ..... lived in Korea and have a Korean fiance... Hanguk people are unmistakable once you've lived amongst them........ excellent Mandu by the way
I think that gaget is for empanadas cause I use to see my mom use it for that
Your mother must be very good at making dumplings ☺️☺️
what? You're the one that stuffed the meat in the wrapper. How can you say one has more "skin" than the other?
😩 This video just made me hungry for pork dumplings 🥟🥡🥢
What’s the recipe for the filling?
I'd imagine the 'sauce uptake' level would be less also on the gadget dumplings.
And that dumpling maker made that dumplings look squished..
The dumpling maker one look more like empanadas than dumplings.
c'mon man, the most difficult part -- the dough --is pre-made, pre-cut and pre-sliced. What's there left to do? Still need a dumpling press?
Yihao Xie she probably got the frozen precut dumpling dough, seen them at Chinese stores. But yh that's the longest part.
a good filling is the hardest part
Well, I for one actually need the press. Since I broke my hand, I can't seem to get my pleating skill back. The muscle memory is there but the actual muscle is too weak.
@@tongdak. not really. most people buy the meat minced in store already. So again, the heavy work is already done. Just add egg, chopped vegatables, seasoning and viola.
