Do You Need a Dumpling Maker for Perfect Dumplings? - The Kitchen Gadget Test Show

  • On today's episode of the Kitchen Gadget Test Show, Choi is battling her handmade dumpling skills against a stainless steel dumpling maker that retails for $7.99 here: amzn.to/2I1. But as Choi quickly points out, the dumplings made by the dumpling maker end up looking more like ravioli - since the small tool triples as a means for making ravioli and perogi, too.

      That's exactly what I was thinking! Not so great for dumplings but perfect for empanadas. And it looks exactly like empanada presses that I've seen over the years. I think the marketers are trying to reach another segment. The handmade dumplings are obviously superior.

    I remember trying to learn how to make dumplings, but never could do it right. A few years later on a whim, I made dumplings and made them quite quickly and quite well. Not sure why, but something happened.
    But definitely do it by hand like Choi did.

    I have a set of these and I've learned that they work better with fresh dough rather than premade wrappers. I got mine with a cookbook and they range from 1.5 inches to 8 inches. Pretty nice. They make good hand pies.

    Okay, so I just had to comment this. I'm from Poland and we are famous for "dumplings" which are called 'pierogi' and what you were using is maker for exactly this kind. The dough for pierogi is much thicker then what you have and another thing is that you are using this "gadget" wrong. I still remember my great-grandma using this (it was plastic not metal).

  • @blueberrymomo4497
    @blueberrymomo4497 6 років тому +4

    Dumpling makers are often used to make dumplings in Poland because they make dumplings a lot more even in less time. Only grandmas nowadays know how to do beautiful ruffles. But pierogi's dough is a lot different so that makes sense.
    And in perogies case you absolutely don't need to fold them before hand.

    If you made the dumpling skins slightly larger then you wouldn't have to fold the dumpling before using the dumpling maker
    Also, if you put in more filling then it would have been more "plump" as you put it and also there wouldn't be any air pockets either or risk of them exploding.
