- Yesterday it was revealed how Kung Fu Kenny himself would rank his four main studio albums, and I've got some thoughts on his order and reasoning.

wow. this made me laugh more than it should have.
The thing is you could literally rank those albums in any order and I would respect your opinion. They're all that good
Charles Barkley exactly!
Charles Barkley agreed. DAMN. is the most replayable, self reflective and modern imo, TPAB is the most risky (musically and because it's socially conscious) and GKMC is his life story told in a way that everyone can relate to. Section 8.0 was gimmickless but it's the most hungry album he has. 3 albums crafted in such a way that they can be the best for good reasons and Section 8.0 is still not bad, wow
s.80>TPYB>GKMC>OD>DAMN
will you take that?

You can say to Kanye's discography as well.

@William Magee Oh I thought he was joking because it was such a ridiculous statement
GKMC = A New Hope

Best ranking, because people can still argue about what it means.

Armand Perez Exactly. I feel like I’m part of a minority of people that ABSOLUTELY LOVES To Pimp A Butterfly, because I’m pretty sure general consensus among Kendrick fans is that GKMC is his best album. I think that’s third best with DAMN. second, but that’s just my opinion.
Edit: This is cap, clearly TPAB is the consensus #1, I was an idiot 3 years ago I know 😭 Also I think GKMC is way better than DAMN, I can’t even remember saying any of this dumb shit
I can't help but feel even Kendrick doesn't realize what a masterpiece he crafted with TPAB.

While i respect your opinion, i cant see how yr missing the strongly thematic message of DAMN. Again, if TPAB is BORN TO RUN, then DAMN. is Kendrick' Nebraska: stripped way down to just a beat and a message. In both cases u get simple powerful, relatable but not watered down American music. Also when u speculate on KF Kenny's intentions for DAMN (which i know u do alot, and thats cool, its part of yr style) you have noticeably not payed attention to what Kendrick or anyone else has said abt wat his intentions were. So u kind of invented and believed yr own narrative. Now if you dont like it as much or arent into it as much or dont put as much stock in it as his other albums, thats fine, totally cool, thats all you bb: like what you like. But the reasoning you provide def seems myopic and maybe stuck in some echo chamber of yr own making. That is my opinion. Peace & respect, Thanks.
I completely agree. I think Anthony heard the much more mainstream instrumentals and production that it gave him a bad taste, and while that is a very fair interpretation, damn kind of falls as more of an imitation of that.
I think if anything he had an experimental take on trap rap with damn, and I think he totally reinstated what trap could be and what it is on damn. The theme of the album where it follows the ideas of TPAB, but almost like the gritty undertones, the doubt Kendrick has in himself when he is saying what he says in TPAB. While it is fair for Anthony to not like DAMN, I just think that maybe he isn’t considering what damn means for rap and for Kendrick as an artist. I feel it is his most complex album, but masked as a simple trap album to in a way follow the themes presented throughout the project.
1. Good Kid, Mad City / TPAB

TPAB - 10
Damn. - 8.5
Only reason people don't like Damn. as much is because it came after TPAB and I feel like their expectations were too high
ISMAIL DAN SADIQ wtf dude, you're the one that sounds 12 years old

Joshua Scrivner damn ain’t even close to section 80 neither have aged well but section 80 a 7 and damn like a 5 rn
Anytime I listen to TPAB I always have to finish the album. Can't say I do the same with DAMN but I still enjoy it.
The only songs that are still as good as they are in context are "i" and "Wesley's Theory," but they are all fire regardless. I think since the message is more tight and less conflictive than in DAMN., it's easier for me to listen to select tracks from that DAMN. without feeling it takes away fr the experience.
Yea tpab is like a 8 part tv show that you have to binge. Damn is like anthologies. Like black mirror

George Harrison u gon put 🅱️ONES in my shit?

sam holik understandable.
have a good day.
Honestly Anthony I think you go into this with too negative/skeptical an attitude to be fair to DAMN. It's fine if you gave it a 7, that's not the problem and it's a fair score, but the real problem is that you can't wrap your head around it being incredibly valuable to Kendrick because you don't think it's as valuable. You immediately come in with the "He's probably just saying this to pimp it out cus it's his newest release" which already comes off a bit insulting considering that Kendrick is the farthest thing from a sellout that has came out of hip hop this century. Then you start saying that while everything else Kendrick says about DAMN is accurate, the album doesn't have as powerful a message to you than TPAB. Again, that's just your opinion. Kendrick himself might hold more emotional value to the messages in DAMN than any of his other albums. Maybe his own personal demons and faults (Which he goes into at great length on this album) mean more than the overall racial oppression plus some personal introspection he describes in TPAB (Let's not forget 'u' here, cus it's amazing).
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt though, you're right about DAMN probably shifting place in the future because Kendrick's mentality changes with each album, and it's not technically the best album he's made, but that's our opinion. Kendrick is 'DAMN' well allowed to feel the way he feels about this album whether it's lesser or greater than his others, because it's his opinion and his point of view. You look at his opinion in a quantitative way when this quote and likely the rest of the interview was qualitative.
So yeah, I don't think it's fair to give your opinion on an opinion without looking at the perspective of said opinion fairly.
Macros20 👍👍👍
Oscar Iván López Anguiano How's he being a dick ? Everything he said 100 % right ,to make a review about an artist having an opinion on their own music is like an exercise in pointlessness
1:15 Shows he was immediately biased to think that "he's just hyping itself up." My quote above wasn't an actual quote, just a summation of what he was saying.
Well that was quite the essay of a response. Good shit tho 👌
don't know if it would have more emotional value to kendrick; i feel like if it was significantly more meaningful to him he would've mentioned it in the interview

honestly i think DAMN. is the best project he's ever put out. I absolutely love it. I wish I could erase my mind and listen to it for the first time again.
facts bro people don't appreciate it
lies bro people do appreciate it
It’s not about what’s objectively best, its what youre looking for in an album.
GKMC is a great narrative, easy to follow, and has some great beats.
TPAB is highly conceptual, full of risks, and incredibly artistic.
DAMN. is Kendrick looking within himself, his relationship with God, and life on top.
And theyre all perfect

My list from worst to best:
Section 80
Damn
Good kid, mad city
To pimp a butterfly
teenage emotions
@Don Shrek i think it's a joke
I think Harverd Dropout is better
I feel like it's normal not to agree with an artist though, because he has entirely different reasons for liking or disliking a project of his. Writing these projects gives him a relationship with them that you won't get just by listening to them, so it's almost inevitable that he'll find different things to appreciate in these projects.
My favorite is and always will be section.80, it means a lot to me personally
One other point is that Ab-Soul said that DAMN. was internally seen as kendrick going back to his roots, back closer to the types of sounds and themes he would have had interest in in the early days of his career so it is possible that part of the reason Kendrick ranks the albums as such is due to authenticity
Compthony Kentano
Section 80 was the best album IMO. Top to bottom the tracks were amazing (maybe disluding no make up), the album was cohesive and just like Kendrick said, it was raw. Plus you can listen to it casually without following the storyline
To Pimp A Butterfly is a like an experience you can almost never come back to cause it'll never be as good as the first time, while DAMN. is an album that you can come back to at anytime and it still sounds fresh as fuck. Both of them are great in their own unique way.
I think Section. 80 was the best. And I don't know why no one else has stated that. It was psychadelic, had a strong message, beats were great, performance was insane! I love that album. One of the best albums of all time. The only dull moment is the hook on No Makeup. Other than that. It is pure fire.

4:48 "DAMN. may sort of change itself, you know, in terms of its rankings down the road, not only for him but for the rest of us too."
Melonhead has already completed the first step in taking back giving DAMN. a 7.
Could you say something about breaking down DAMN?He talked about it on interview too. You touched it very softly, and it's a riddle. It's more a riddle, than a message album.
It took me some time to find out whether "good kid, m.A.A.d city" or "To Pimp a Butterfly" was my number one by Kendrick. But in the end, it had to be "To Pimp a Butterfly" just because it's such a unique experience, so extremely well done, and so interesting! And it really feels like all songs were made to be where they are.
"DAMN." has a lot of great tracks, but it fails to feel as good as an album to me (though I felt it had a better flow in reverse), and "Section.80" is interesting, but to me it feels like Kendrick doesn't have the self esteem and the production needed to pull it off quite yet there
I feel like kendrick ranked the albums not by how good they were, but what they mean to him at this moment. my personal favorites in order:worst to best: DAMN, Section 80, Good kid, and TPAB. I like all his albums so far.
you just know you're a great artist when you see people not having arguments on wether you're a good artist or not but instead on which one of you albums was the greatest.
“getting us ready for the new record”
3 years later still no record
I think its really hard to decide between TPAB and goodkid, for me purely because goodkid was the album that really put me on hip hop I'd have to say goodkid, but TPAB truly is a masterpiece if not very close
Based on the overall enjoyment of the album
Good kid mad city
TPAB and Untitled Unmastered
Section.80
Damn
Chicket pot pie
I feel like Kendrick doesnt have a bad album so ranking them is pointless, it's all a matter of opinion
I had an argument with a friend of mine because she said that good kid was way better than tpab. I explained to her the instrumental diversity and heritage as well as the lyrical content and overall message is what rooted tpab so deeply in my ear. She started to get quite frustrated especially at the fact that I said I related to the album a lot. She said that there was no way I could relate to it because I wasn't black. She said that good kid had so many good songs on it and that's what made it so much better.
I was especially frustrated at how she said I couldn't relate to the album, especially coming from someone who hadn't sat down and listened to the album from beginning to end multiple times, trying to absorb every verse and searching for the overall meaning.
Tpab hits me hard because of its references to self-hatred, temptation, ignorance, and revenge. Each song flows into one another and the record gives you that satisfying feeling of completion at the end similar to the feeling of finishing a Pink Floyd album.
It is people who observe album's as complete works of art who are keeping the music industry from drowning in retarded shit. It is you and I and everyone watching and listening to this video who give me hope that music won't go to complete shit. Not anytime soon at least.

I don't like his condescending laugh about Kendrick's rankings in the beginning it's like he is saying "Silly Kendrick leave the opinions to the guy who knows more about your music than you do yourself"
Trevor Fox Shut the fuck up. His listings are shit.
Trevor Fox he laughs because he thinks kendrick isn’t being real
Honestly I understand why Kendrick has the albums ranked like this. If Mr. Morale was out at the time of his ranking, he would probably put it above DAMN, since it does have the much needed focus missing from the precious album alongside much more personal songs. With the fatigue that comes from the music writing and rapping process, it makes more sense that he would line himself up with stories about himself that he wants to communicate that experience best to his audience.
FEAR from DAMN is definitely inspired by his storytelling process in GKMC, but elevated skill to the point that it is genuinely one of his best songs in his whole discography.
Btw the album ranking for me from worst to best would probably be: DAMN, Section 80, GKMC, Mr. Morale, TPaB
Although, the difference between his worst and best is so small it might as well be equal
I mean it makes sense. He feels that he has put out the best music he can on DAMN. He feels that he is always evolving.Which all artist should try to be doing
I have an interesting interpretation for damn. And that is the gunshot in BLOOD. and DUCKWORTH. are the same bullet, is just after BLOOD. Kendrick is experiencing the 'life flashing before your eyes' effect where he reflects upon himself and how he fears that he is damned to go to hell because of his past and his opinions on himself and the world around him, he comes to accept this near the end with GOD and finally reflects on how it all began but the bullet finally hits him, I recommend listening to it with this in mind cause it's a nice twist, obviously I am not saying this is what's intended at all but the beautiful thing about damn is it's made in such a way it is open to interpretation
You should know by now, Anthony, that the opinion artists have about their own stuff is usually much different from what their listeners usually think;
its TEE PEE AY BEE no tee pab
young thug has spoken
Idk if it’s just me but I don’t get to pimp a butterfly

2. TPAB
3. DAMN/ SECTION 80
(honestly equal imo)
to pimp a butterfly is just so hard to listen to all at once, and theres a few tracks that i honestly couldnt be bothered listening to at times. theres also such a range in quality across the 16 tracks. institutionalised, for sale, momma, complexion and you aint gotta lie just arent worth listening to most days.
the track-to-track quality on GKMC is pretty consistent, and i really have a hard time telling people what my favourite tracks on the record are because i end up just reciting the tracklist. i guess i didnt love "real" or "now or never" initially but theyve really grown on me.
another reason i liked GKMC is it was one of those albums that really puts you in the story. it felt like i was there, watching k dot and the boys get up to no good. saying specific street names as well made it feel really local. loved that.
its so easy to listen to as well, never want to skip a song. barely even notice that sing about me, im dying of thirst is 12 minutes long. just get lost in that track.
moving on, while i do think that anthony didnt give DAMN. enough credit, i think a lot of the people here are giving it a bit too much. people everywhere telling me that it tells a different story backwards or some shit. like, it doesnt really tell a fucking story forwards, let alone backwards. to my knowledge, there isnt a fucking story spanning more than 1 track.
i will give him credit for packing so much meaning into each song, though. it was very clever and good commercially. each track is like its own individual story. What annoys me about that is that theres no real reason to listen to them in sequence. as a result, it doesnt really feel like an album to me. just a collection of 14 singles.
7 was fucking harsh though, especially coming straight from a 10. the albums an 8, just like section 80
i wont hold it against TPAB just because i personally dont like the sound of a few songs. the message is still strong, and its amazing lyrically. feeling a mid to strong 9 on this one. same with gkmc
Good Kid Mad City is by far his best album. A classic from start to finish.

My favorite song on damn is pride. Damn is my favorite album mainly because in the end it rewinds and restarts. He explained that somewhat in a recent interview
Anthony Fantano's ranking of Kendrick Lamar albums (based on the ratings he gave for each):
4. DAMN (7/10)
3. Section 80 (8/10)
2. Good Kid Mad City (9/10)
1. To Pimp A Butterfly (10/10)
1. Good kid, mAAd City

3. Section 80.
4. DAMN.
The theme not being so clear in DAMN is somehow what makes it so desirable for me, like who is the blind women? What happens when you play it backwards? I feel thats what makes me go back to it all the time
That unsolved rubik's cube in the background was stopping me from fully enjoying the video. You need help solving that?
Melon, you keep saying there was not an overall theme for Damn and I just don't understand why? I think it's pretty obvious and has been spoken about at numerous websites and videos that the album is Kendrick realizing that we aren't inherently a certain way, we are who we are because of the choices we make good/bad and the choices of people around us good/bad. That everything in life has a choice and you can choose. He discovers whether it's weakness or inherent in humans. I think he wanted people to think about the choices they make and the impact they have on everyone around them including one's self.
I kinda see where Kendrick is coming from as well. But I more of see DAMN. as a Kendrick "Jack of All Trades" Album. Not a bad album at all, but not exceedingly mindblowing in any one category
