    I'm furious about the lack of penalty for Will Power on Malukas. If the roles were reversed, Malukas would have gotten penalized immediately. Malukas' interview matched how I felt as well. He's never going to get justice and that podium today.

    The audio showed that Power's spotter was clearly informing him of "inside, inside", yet he still came down leaving less than one lane. Can you ask officials if they were considering a penatly? In the end, the penalty wasnt necessary since on the next restart, Power was taken out. On the slow restart, Herta's audio said "he deserves a penalty for speeding up and slowing down... that is dirty". My main question is "was Newgarden at normal pace car speed" as required by the rules. He appeared much slower. Even though he said he does that all the time (slow restarts), he certainly did NOT do it right after the red flag restart that he caused. I agree with Herta.... it was dirty, and intentional. Restart Rules: "The leader of the field under the yellow condition is required to maintain pace lap speed until reaching a designated point (restart cone) where the leader is REQUIRED to accelerate smoothly back to racing speed and the green condition will be declared. If the leader does not accelerate at the restart cone, THE STARTER will show the green flag to the field to accelerate." Newgarden did not accelerate until the green light came on, meaning he was outside the restart zone. He did not comply with the "smoothly accellerate" portion of the rule. Had there not been cars taken out, I would say let it stand (no penalty). However, since Newgarden caused a lot of equipment be destroyed, and endangered his competitors, a penatly is warranted.

    SO much going on in this one...wildly entertaining, phenomenally high quality racing, incredible drama. Driving as good as you'll see anywhere, any time. Controversy. Emotion. Drama. In many ways the best of what contemporary IndyCar offers. But. BUT. You've hit the nail right on the head of some key 'buts'. But: the damn hybrid. One, it continues to regularly cause so many race-ending mechanical issues that it almost feels like a return to 80's-ish era reliability again. Two, by throwing a 100 lb weight over the rear axel (among many other things) it's created needless and contrived balance/setup/performance issues that feel like a barely controllable crapshoot from race to race, even day to day, things that should be worked out long before introduction (as should be it's rationale for even being, from a racing quality value-add perspective, which if one exists I've never heard it and sure haven't seen it.) Three, aspects of its control have the potential to raise serious integrity issues, never good but especially not for this series at this particular moment. All three of which are elements of this question: Why the F did Scotty Mac NOT HAVE A FUNCTIONAL HYBRID PU on the deciding final restart and laps of the race? A slightly important one, especially as it's the reason Scotty himself gave in his post-race interview as to why he so badly gapped right from the jump and remaining laps, which sure looks both true and accurate as nobody remotely pulled a gap like that on any of the (many) other restarts. It looked weird. And it sure turned out to be. Who has the ability to to remotely turn it off and on, when, and who is minding that store? Can it malfunction? Why is the series even utilizing a power unit technology so unreliable that it vanishes on someone on a late restart and the remaining laps? Which at minimum is grossly unfair, and possibly cost someone a chance at a win? Questions that pertain directly to the integrity of the series. NBC, in their completely non-journalistic role as hypemasters/shills for the series (not a judgement, and I get why that's the gig) aren't going to ask them...they literally pretend as if they don't exist. Sadly the Jack Arute's and Sam Posey's, who actually asked hard questions and reported facts that pissed drivers teams and the series off because they saw it as part of their jobs and a service that fans deserved, are long and forever gone from broadcast coverage. Thankfully there are people like DL who've filled the void and picked up the IndyCar journalistic baton. I'm appreciative of the fine balance every reporter has to walk between delivering the info their audience wants and deserves to know and pissing off and potentially getting frozen out by the subjects of their beat. It ain't easy. Great job as ever. I'd love your take on the hybrid in general thus far and the Scotty Mac issue specifically.

    I’ve been suspicious of The sway the Penske corporation holds on the IndyCar series ever since we found out three of their cars had push-to-pass in a race that did not allow it . What I expected would be a serious reprimand/penalty was substantially lighter than it should’ve been. You’re right to think there is a bias towards the Penske team and against its competitors and it couldn’t be more apparent than in this race. It’s not consistency that I want. It’s fairness and the race is not being run in a fair way. I noticed the things you noticed, Power going low and pinching Malukas, and the slow restart that caused the crash that benefited Newgarden. These things immediately looked off to me and the fact that there was no just remedy makes the Penske team look like a villain on the circuit and the series rigged in favor of the Penske team.

      I don’t think you can do that, the reason they’re able to get back on the lead lap is the wave around. Let’s say we’re in a situation where the leaders need to pit and all the cars a lap down are on alternate strategy. Then we’re going to have positions let’s say 14-21 lead the field to green.
      Leader needs to take the green flag. Wave around rule allows that, plus gives people a lap down a chance to redeem. Otherwise there’s two cars on the lead lap at the end.

    I get that in ovals, you need to be more safety sensitive, but there really needs to be a rule change on bringing out the yellow. There's no way a driver should make an error and spin, then get a benefit from it by getting fresh tyres and put right back behind the car he was following. A yellow wasn't necessary for Newgarden, but since it was thrown, he should have been made to go a lap down.
    Also Power should have gotten a penalty, but I guess it all worked itself out in the end. Newgarden's restart was dumb, but not uncommon in racing, maybe if they were allowed to go two-wide he would have done something different. Maybe McLaughlin was a bit caught out by not knowing the rules as well because he could have done what Palou did and put some more pressure, but maybe he was already pass the green flag lights and a bit too close to Newgarden to move to the side.

    Every car has telemetry. I wanna see the brake trace, throttle trace, and speed for Newgarden. These are all fundamental vehicle data taken by every team. Maybe it would settle the debate. If Newgarden was more than some percentage slower than the pace car, or if there's a certain amount of velocity change, or more than a certain number of throttle aplications in the restart zone, it should be a penalty!
    Honestly, talking about what it looked like is kinda nonsense. Opinions are like assholes. There's data for this, and everyone needs to know the rules and compare the data to the written rules, or we need to change the rules to eliminate this in the future. Appreciate your thoughts DL.

      Nope, I sure don't, but I would need to, in order to comment intelligently. This situation is still clear as mud a week later. And as far as I can tell, the announcers, pundits, and fans don't know the rule. You better believe I'm downloading the rulebook after this though. Everybody has exhausted themselves speculating, but nobody's figured out whether this was legal or not.
      There are a lot of people hinting that this was a malicious move. I'm saying it's the responsibility of the announcers and commenters (anyone arguing about it) to know what the rules are. One rule says that they have to maintain pace, and another rule says once green, the leader has the field, but neither of those is damning without the data. I guarantee Indycar and Penske both know whether or not he slowed. They have the telemetry, but they won't tell.
      I'm pissed, because my favorite driver got knocked out in the jockeying. But, I'm more pissed that nobody seems to know if it was legal or not. There should be a defined threshold for whether or not JoNew did anything wrong.
      If he did slow down, this sets a bad precedent that every leader on every restart can go as slow as they want, which is obviously not right. Or, if he didn't slow down, everyone else is just SOL, because they didn't know the rules, and overcommitted to the leader going when it went green. If that's the case, it's on them.

  • @ProModsPerformance
    @ProModsPerformance 25 днів тому +13

    You are mistaken on the restart rules in IndyCar. On restarts specifically, they're meant to call the green after the lead driver accelerates.
    Rule 7.7.1.3: At the appropriate time, the Pace Car lights will be turned off, indicating the intent to restart the Race. The leader is required to
    maintain the pace lap speed until reaching the restart zone designated by INDYCAR when the **leader shall accelerate** smoothly back to

    You misspoke when you said Lundgaard ahead of Power. It was Kirkwood. This isn't the first time when I have been wondering how a car is allowed to stay on the track if there is not a single car they can pass...mathematically impossible to improve their position. There was 21 laps left when the Power/Malukas crash happened and Kirkwood was 33 laps down. There was literally no way for him to improve. The only reason I could think why he would still be running was to stay in Power's way to help Herta. By my way of thinking, Malukas, Power, Grosjean, Rossi, and Harvey were all taken out by the #27. I am not anti-Kirkwood...in fact, I had him picked to win this race. The fact is, he shouldn't have been there at that point and I believe the #27 is directly responsible for the disastrous end to this otherwise amazing race.

Short track racing in Indycar with multiple lines, lapped cars battling for position making it tough for the leaders to get past who are also fighting for position reminds me of the 90's with the races at Phoenix, Milwaukee, Nazareth and New Hampshire. Driving around in a line at 200mph with very little passing and lapped traffic not being a factor is boring, but actually having guys needing to make decisions and try and get through that traffic while also trying to pass the guy in front (or defend from the guy behind) is what racing is all about and what seperates the good drivers from the great drivers. Michael, Al Unser Jr., Mario, Emmo and Nigel really put on clinics in the mid 90's as to how to race. Even the race at Burke Lakefront Airport I think from 1995 or 1996 with Nigel and Emmo going side be side, turning left AND right for half a lap with inches between the wheels shows how great they were but it all the chaos with cars on different laps passing each other on short ovals is what is exciting.

    I think David is pretty spot on with his recap here. Optically its tough to make sense for the average viewer the contact with the 3 no calls/call. It was a great race all in all that had the finish tainted. I enjoy Gateway every year and will 100% be back next year.

    Facilities good enough for an FIA championship in recent years ✅

    I just wanted to say I really enjoy your videos and how you show your passion in the auto motorsports. I didn't watch this race you are talking about, but I will be looking for a replay of the full race. I follow NASCAR more, but you got me looking into Indy/F1. I had no idea Indy raced at Nashville or is that a 1st time track for Indy? Either way I think it should be good.

    Well done Linus. Let’s hope your second podium of the season and the teams inside knowledge of a) your times and b) situations outside your control are enough for Chip to offer you a new contract.

    So totally agree with your entire assessment including what makes a good oval short track race. I'm going to blame unclear rules and inconsistent enforcement of those ambiguous rules on drivers driving dirty and stupid. Will Power got exactly what he deserved after crashing David Malukas out, but he wasn't wrong Josef Newgarden his team mate cause the accident. Zero Penske cars got penalized today. So I have been saying this for years and it was the way things were at one time, if a guy is alongside like Malukas was, like Legg was you have to give them enough room to have their car on track whether it be inside or outside or whatever else. Now drivers are literally going completely offline to run other drivers off track or pinching them as happened multiple time at St Louis. This discourages legitimate passing and causes wrecks for no good reason. What then is considered alongside? Well if their front wheels are alongside your rear wheels or past them they have the position leave them enough room ontrack, if they are not alongside then there is no need to do anything but take the optimal normal racing line and the onus is on them to backout. We have replays and if you misjudge it is on you as a professional race car driver to get it right.
    Now how penalties are handed out is remarkably inconsistent. the race control people need to be held accountable too.
    David it was good race and I was literally outside the main gate at 1PM passing by and intended to go as this track is on my list. Had been out of town and the family was willing but homesick.... keep up the good work sir.

    The rule in all motorsports on the safety car restart is that when the safety car period ends it is upto the lead car to control the pack at a safe and consistant speed. Another dumb call from indaycar officials

    • @simonkevnorris
      @simonkevnorris 25 днів тому

      In most series on a restart cars can't pass until the start/finish line. In the USA they're allowed to pass as soon as the green flag drops. I first saw,that at a NASCAR race at Dover Downs in 2001.
      I must admit that I don't know if that rule has changed since then. International racing hasn't changed about no overtaking before the start/finish line.

    • @Mortimuss
      @Mortimuss 24 дні тому

      @@simonkevnorris nascar and indycar make their own rules. There is no international oversight. It sounds like pre race they determine a restart zone and the leader can go at any point inside of it. Since Newgarden rolled all the way through at 80, indycar threw the green. Newgarden still didn’t go right away. Rossi saw green and hammered it.

    I'm not a big fan of Newgarden, but I find no fault in his restart. His critics can't have it both ways. If the pole driver is in charge of pace until the green flag / light is flown, then that's the rule. Newgarden didn't flagrantly break-check McLaughlin, but McLaughlin may have been flagrantly too close to Newgarden (as were other drivers to other drivers behind them).

    I think oval races show a lot about the characteristics of a driver and his car. The differences in mechanics are more noticeable on an oval with a lot of flat out most of the time, but the intelligence on track, how clean a driver is or isn't riding at 200mph with teammates just inches away, the control of the situation to stay out of trouble and even a driver's luck for a yellow flag

    I would like to know if in car telemetry set off the sensor as Newgarden moved through and had left the restart zone. Because the green flag waived right before the wreck. I wonder if everyone is going then Newgarden was still slow.

    I don't think there is anything they can rule about the restarts. The leader can take off or pace the field however he want as long as he is at pace. Ya it was probably a shady tactic that threw the competitors off but it's happened a fair amount of times and nothing has happened. Maybe in the future they make a rule specifically stating how a leader must restart the race or deem forcing a stack up to be illegal. But for now there's nothing there that would warrant anything penalty wise.

    Watching the last two restarts of the race, they put the green light on way earlier on the last one than the one Rossi hit Power. I mean it was put on in the middle of 3&4 on the last one where as they put it on when they came out of 4 when the accident happened.

    I don't understand Indycar's restart zone. I hated when they restarted on essentially the backstretch. But now they restart so late that you get these accordions. Move the zone to middle of 3 and 4 and stop these clown show restarts.
