I think this video speaks the truth about the industry you will "have" to work extra hours and layoffs are really common but I think the way you said it make it sounds like artist need to tolarate this because it is like that and nothing can be done about, especially when you say is sometimes not paid. Hopefully and probably you think the same way as I do, is not ok. Please artists make yourself get respected. Do not get into positions where they exploit you, even if it is a great curriculum point, especially for years like Mark said, just quit those jobs is not worth it. Your art will speak for you and if you need to get prestige then better improve your art not your curriculum. Is a complicated job and world, I'm not trashing on Mark's words they are the truth but at least I'm trying to make it clear that yeah the industry is like that but is not ok and nobody should tolerate it no matter what. Is not cool to be on the club if the club just wants to harm you.
Me being in my senior year of highschool, only just now realizing what I wanna be, with an intense creativity to draw something new everyday, this video helped me so much!
I remember Karla Ortiz saying she was asked if she wanted to move to LA to work for Marvel. She said no, and they said that’s fine - she could work from home. Haha Just goes to show that if you’re really f’n good you may not need to relocate. 😄
This was honestly extremely disheartening but I’m glad I know now. I was interested in environmental and character design but only really for cartoons and most of that industry is in LA and I don’t care how good a position is, that’s a hard no for me. I’m disabled and can’t move around a lot and would really struggle with relocation. I’m scared because there isn’t a lot of industry over here that isn’t 3D stuff and I need to be able to work remotely and from home. I hope something good actually comes from the virus and studios will have a lot more wfh opportunities to make their work my accessible.

I've just got rejected from my dream college. I've wanted to work as character concept artist for years, so it broke me. Now I'm facing a difficult choice between giving up on my dreams or waiting another year and participate again. Your video brought me to tears and made me realize that I need to push forward, work harder, develop myself. I'll do everything to achieve my goal, despite the failures. Thank you, Marc
Might be a blessing in disguise! Only about 15% of all working artists have a formal art education so it's not at all needed, if anything statistically it's overwhelmingly a waste of money for students. What matters is your portfolio and how much visibility you have, that's it! (I never went to college myself)
I've never seen anyone use the methods you use to color in artwork. It's so interesting the way you stamped the color from the images and then somehow blended them together. As for your tips on making a career out of concept art, your words are very encouraging and inspirational. I hope to do the stuff that you do in a few years.
I absolutely love this video, it was short but straight to the point and helped me to make my mind up about whether I want to be a concept artist or an illustrator. I'm going to work hard to become a concept artist specialising in characters. Thank you for this enlightening video and if I get the funds imma definitely go for your art school! Thanks for everything!! 🥰
What an amazing video! I definitely saved that game dev map website to my bookmarks. Now that I'm done with my master's, I want to get back into learning with your ART school curriculum since I have the time to dive in again 😊 thanks Marc!
I'd never thought about being a concept artist before, but that this video has made me think about it, i think it would be a good job for me. I am very creative, enjoy drawings (specifically sketching) and my ideas can be all over the place leading to a interstingly unique interpretation.
I took your advice from an older video you made, saying: Make a public portfolio. Get recognized, and build a community. I have a Deviantart page, even though I am not very good at digital art yet. I hope to improve while growing and enjoying this whole process. Thanks so much for the advice! I really love that I took that jump, and stepped out of my comfort zone.
I'm recently starting to study art by my self and I know I am try to get as good as an illustrator but my main and love goar ia been this a concept artist . I've had the goal of working as an artist in the video game industry ever since middle school and often think about choosing concept art as a path. I knew several of the expectations listed, but you got me thinking more about other things I hadn't fully considered. It's great to hear advice from an artist with experience in this particular field and I feel better hearing what you had to say. Thank you for this video.
"its all about ideas" The video ends for me here , i consider myself the most uncreative person , my brain stops when i want to think about something new
Don't think just grab a big flat brush and fill in the canvas and then you'll eventually feel the need to decrease the brushes size and opacity as you go and voila you'll have a bunch of shapes before you find the time to think about it. (worked for me I used to overthink as well)
Well, nothing is actually new. Just start by combining different things that already exist. Did it turn out good? Great! Didn't it? Great too, you checked out a bad combination. The greatest concepts in my opinion are those that are sufficiently grounded to make me think they could actually be made/found in real life. If you don't like this approach, I believe you could still find a place at illustration where you draw things that already exist, like landscapes and other backgrounds/scenes
creativity is a teachable skill, dw. it's not about imagining or creating something new, it's about connecting things that already exist into one cohesive product. a remix, if you'd like. people that're considered extremely creative simply saw patterns in things others didnt notice, or simply by messing around with the question, "what if ...?" what if i combine this with that? what if i use this colour/pattern usually associated with one thing to represent another thing instead? etc. so, again, it's not about creating something new, it's more about mixing and matching things together with the intent of making something better than those things independently. moodboards and collages i think are really good practices for creativity. :-)
Nothing is original. It's like "finding a style", learning from multiple good sources by trying to imitate them to see why and how they're good. Like ErickShocks said, if it didn't turn out well that's good too because you're learning from mistakes. Combine and see for yourself.
I'm currently moving away from a pure drawing process to a more concept art process and I'm LOVING IT. Didn't know I fit the concept artist ethos so well. I'll keep learning as if my career path is for a CA.
Thanks for the vid! I would love to know more about the process that you’re doing in this video, how quick you’re able yo establish great environment concepts
I'm a composer and can't seem to be able to land a gig or become part of a team, even tho I hear only positive feedback from anyone and everyone. Have been thinking about taking courses in Concept Design on the side and growing that skill as well. I used to draw when I was younger and was very good at it without having a teacher. Also, I think there are more concept artists required for a project than composers. I don't even know if that's a good decision but it's definitely something I've been thinking about. Thank for the details, it helped a lot.
Hi Marc, Thank you for all your tutorials. I have seen a lot from you about how to draw and how to prepare professionally. As an aging artist, I have become concerned with creating professional longevity for myself. I have noticed it has been harder to sit in the same position without strains and pains. What is your experience with creating an ergonomic work setup and how do you keep your body in shape to grind out long hours creating digitally?
There is no way you made this today. 2 days ago i started doing concept art and watched a couple tutorials. I got pretty good at it, but i need this as well to get even better. Seeing different styles is amazing and helps me decide on my style. Thanks
Hello!! Professional COncept artists here and I absolutely agree. What is most important is bring ideas, use references and ideas to the table, finished art is not as necessary as people think. We have only had a few clients asking for fully rendered and finished concept art. Most of the time they just want visuals to the ideas they put out. If this is a job you want to be a part of absolutely give more value to your creativity and ability to put that down in an image than the quiality of fully rendered drawings!
Just yesterday I started classes at an art school to be a concept artist! I enrolled literally a few weeks before I was supposed to start community college and realizing I didn’t want to waste my time with a career I wasn’t passionate about. I’m so grateful to have found this channel!
The things you say are very reassuring to me, since it is ideas that I really excel at, and drawing/illustrating is the tool I want to use to show the ideas. Now I just have to keep on practicing.
I don't know whether or not I want to, or will be a concept artist, but I am interested in it, mostly because I've looked at the concept art for Zelda games and it looked really cool to me. I love how different the characters looked early on, while still being recognizable as the same person, and it's fun to see early ideas that never made it in-game. :)
I'm a Scottish Digital Media graduate with an interest in multimedia and concept design, especially characters. But I've been struggling to find work these last two years and my motivation for online courses (I've got tons of them I've yet to work through) has been drained.
From my observation, clients usually game devs cant fully comprehend an idea whether its a good or bad one and cause of that, concept artists tend to illustrate their ideas to communicate well with the client. And it goes on and on until the two terms got mixed up.
Got a BFA in animation.. Realized I wanted to be an illustrator instead after a month. I never had the time at my school to sit down and think about what I was doing due to it being crunch time literally 24/7. I got this, I can do this. I just need to stay positive! I've made leaps and bounds, but I still feel the daunting feeling of "You will never be good enough."

I have no intention of doing this, in fact I'm barely capable of drawing something, but here I am watching this video with full interest like my future depends on it
This is EXACTLY the type of industry I'm interested in! This was incredibly helpful, thank you soooo much! Most helpful industry related video on UA-cam I've found so far! My dream is to become a character concept artist, but my art style still needs work. So it was super encouraging when you said that "good art" isn't always what's needed, but ideas are what really counts (and I have more ideas than I know what to do with, haha 'xD). Super excited to explore this more and find out if this industry is actual for me! I'm totally considering checking out your school when I have the funds! Digital art is a paaiiinnn to me, so any help in regards to improving it would be a life saver. Again, thank you so much! This was enlightening

has been a while since i saw a video from you this really open my eyes to start working towards a goal, also it put a smile on my face to hear Travel Agency theme from FFX at the end! even if i cant pay for courses atm i can at least follow these tips
I'm so happy I watched this. I want to be a character concept artist, so it was this video has helped me with my worries. I love drawing, I live creating characters, I need more practice in both art and getting good ideas, so I think I'd live to go on with it. I have a long way to go, I've got so much more room to improve - and although I'm scared for what the future holds for me if I keep going down this path, I'm goin to try my best. I'm still young, so I've still got a bit more time left. Thank you
Thank yew for your sharing your enormous experience with us! I am currently in IT and I..should honor what I wanted to do, which was art / film... more drawing though!

If you want to dive into this further, The Art Department podcast talks about this more.
Bottom line, age doesn’t matter. Your work and ability to meet deadlines does. 😉 Don’t feel ashamed of your age, just go out there and be awesome. Imagine yourself in ten years looking back having NOT decided to pursue the things you wanted. You’d be kicking yourself for not starting now.
hey dude, i'm 28 and im juust starting to be really keen on pursuing art... its hard not to be ashamed so i really appreciate you sharing. i struggle with energy, like i feel like the kids around me just have endless energy to practice but after i get done with my actual work i'm all but dead. i went back to school recently and eveeryone around me is like ten years younger. it's a trip. i wonder if there are groups catered to older artists getting started and such?
@@Within_Cells_Interlinked thanks for your input , yeah focusing on one area , is not easy as it's tempting to learn so many things and learning can also be a rabitt hole as well,i will take a look at the podcast , thanks for your encouragement ;)
I hope something good actually comes from the virus and studios will have a lot more wfh opportunities to make their work my accessible.
i've always been interested in being concept artist and this really helped me
i've always loved to invent things and some people even told me i'm too quick at coming up with concepts so it always seemed like a good thing to do in the future, thank you for making this video, it really did gave me a good vision on what the job is, and it's definitely something i want to be in
U dont how much you saved my life 😅 because i just realized that i really need to become an illustrator if i want to make cool environment and all thats cool illustration and not concept artist because im not into characters design and dont have a ton of ideas etc so thank you so much this video help to find my truth path of art ! 😊

Me going to school to become a concept artist: Thank you youtube algorithm
I've been thinking about this career a lot, man your channel is gold, I've found gold.
this is great, im 19 and been drawing for a year and concept art seems like an amazing job path. thanks for the video :]
I've been looking at articles about this just yesterday! _How come these videos always come at the right time_
This is perfect! Thanks for the tips, I'll show this to my significant other to let her make more informed decisions.
What an amazing video! I definitely saved that game dev map website to my bookmarks. Now that I'm done with my master's, I want to get back into learning with your ART school curriculum since I have the time to dive in again 😊 thanks Marc!
What you're talking about is actually applicable to almost every career.
I'd never thought about being a concept artist before, but that this video has made me think about it, i think it would be a good job for me. I am very creative, enjoy drawings (specifically sketching) and my ideas can be all over the place leading to a interstingly unique interpretation.
Wish younger me had had this sort of amazing info and guidance before starting as an artist. But never too late I guess!! 💪
Bring those oc to life as a comcept and just see them and my self have fun letting them out there for every one to see and enjoy them as much and this had given me so much more hope
Art is fun and party until you hear the reality of it as a job, i may take this tips to see what i want to be, thank you so much for this!
The sound of background followed by your voice is calming and at the sametime depressing, I don't know why I felt this.
I really needed to listen to something like this, like two days ago I felt that I lost mi path and had a lot of fears, no that I'm back in a way, this feels refreshing and also inspiring, so, thank you so much fo sharing this, greetings from Colombia
Honestly, I'm mesmerized by the background. This was very inspiring!
"its all about ideas"
The video ends for me here , i consider myself the most uncreative person , my brain stops when i want to think about something new
Don't think just grab a big flat brush and fill in the canvas and then you'll eventually feel the need to decrease the brushes size and opacity as you go and voila you'll have a bunch of shapes before you find the time to think about it.
Little Somebody This thread was nice to read. High key motivated me thankss
All i got to say is thank you! Very well explained!✌️😜
Always loved concept art
Never stop because you all inspired me to become a engineer. Remember that what you do inspires so many people
Thanks for the vid! I would love to know more about the process that you’re doing in this video, how quick you’re able yo establish great environment concepts
Concept art is extremely fascinating to me because it signals the beginning of a new world.
Hi Marc,
Thank you for all your tutorials.
Thanks
Thank you! Didnt know about the difference between concept and illustrators but frequently encounter them.
Don't mind Marc, just casually emerging out of the water with a shirt on.
Congrats on 700k. Love this channel.
this is exactly what I needed! thank you UA-cam algorithm! and Marc, this is an awesome video! cheers!
I'm a Scottish Digital Media graduate with an interest in multimedia and concept design, especially characters. But I've been struggling to find work these last two years and my motivation for online courses (I've got tons of them I've yet to work through) has been drained.
This inspired me to work more hard !!
I'm trying my best to be
Thank you so much as always!!
Do you have an account on deviantart or on ArtStation?, Can i see some of your drawings pls?
@@JohnwART584 yes I have artstaition ,, here's the link fatimamuk.artstation.com
@@fandomstrash2802 thx!
You are truly an expert in making landscape arts. Thanks for sharing Very valuable information
I swear to god, I was just going to start studying concept art and searching for tutorial videos. what a great timing
Pleas Marc can you talk about the iPad pro and procreate, i really would like to hear your opinion ! :D
From my observation, clients usually game devs cant fully comprehend an idea whether its a good or bad one and cause of that, concept artists tend to illustrate their ideas to communicate well with the client. And it goes on and on until the two terms got mixed up.
Gorgeous as always!
I'm in love with all your work!
Look i clicked on this video at 7 in the morning right before school and i did not sleep at all and then you start talking....YOUR VOICE IS SO CALMING ITS NOT HELPING AT ALL RIGHT NOW AAAAA
Since I have a year or so before I need to be in college I’ve been trying to narrow down a goal, right now graphic design or concept art are the main ones I’m interested in right now
Specifically character or creature design
Thank you for the tips, I’ll keep them in mind for my application portfolio :3
This was enlightening
instant like in the first few seconds just because of the amazing intro
This really helped me get insight in what the different between a concept artist and a illustrator is! And as someone who really want to be a concept artist this is really helpfull!!!
Love your channel mate! Currently on term 3 of Art School and im seeing very quick improvements in my art skills.
You worked on Overwatch? That’s so cool, definitely subscribing. I’d love to learn how you developed the world of Overwatch.
This just gave me motivation :’)
Your videos are really mind changing. Concept artist career seems really fit to me.
we will make it guys, keep pushing
The ASMR water entry with the sudden punch sounds on the like and subscribe buttons was perfect. xD
God I love this guy.
has been a while since i saw a video from you this really open my eyes to start working towards a goal, also it put a smile on my face to hear Travel Agency theme from FFX at the end!
even if i cant pay for courses atm i can at least follow these tips
Love you Marc, thanks for the advice and motivation! I appreciate it a lot
Great video!! The song from FFX at the end really brought it home for me :')
Thank you
Thank you for this video, as an amateur artist that wants to get into the industry you really helped me!
Helpful info as always. I'm here to simp for you every week, Marc!
Thank yew for your sharing your enormous experience with us! I am currently in IT and I..should honor what I wanted to do, which was art / film... more drawing though!
u catch my eyes wth this openning
Thanks you. You said you have to show your employer that you are as plug and play as possible. I never heard it put like that. Timeless advice.
Thanks for the video Marc !
this video is really helpful and inspiring at the same time, I was distracted by the piece in the background tho!!!
i ADORED that intro lmaooo, love you man
this is awesome! -
I just got the advanced brush pack and will look to sign up for term 2.
Thanks so much!
This video was super helpful, thank you so so much!
Wow! Thank you sooo much!
I have always been a fan of conpect art for games and movies, always watched the DvD extras as a kid and even now, looking at rejected concept art to see what the game/movie could have been.
This was incredibly helpful and made me really think about what I've been putting out and how I can improve my work. I subbed.
I really want to be there, its my passion. Thank you
Thanks! This is really helpful, i'm trying ang keep imagining my concept art so this particular Idea is a BigHelp
