Plane crash survivor here. I'm incredibly grateful I put my head down. Not only did it contribute to the "survivor" part of being a plane crash survivor, but it also helped shield my 15-month-old daughter during impact. She was traveling in my lap. She, too survived. Listen to your pilot and crew.
I'm no plane crash survivor, but I was in a car crash once, where I was in the backseat with no seat belt on. I knew we were going to crash and did the "brace for impact" thing instinctually... I'm pretty sure it saved me from being much was off, instead of my body crashing into the seat inferno of me it just pushed up against it
Sometimes I almost feel like the inverse is true, considering how many people got rich due to their complete lack of social intelligence, common sense and basic understanding of the law...
Wealth is a GREAT insulator from the effects of stupidity or lack of common sense. They can just spend their way out of their dumbass decisions and make it someone else's problem. But most REAL wealthy people were born with the $ chromosome or get lucky with stupid ideas and bad decisions. A few REALLY earn it through hard work, but at least half of them would be eligible for a lifetime membership at Club Fed if we actually knew how they got there. But i'm not saying they're dumber than the consumers and fetuses who fall for their scams either.
It's also a disclaimer... meaning he wasn't stating it as absolute truth, but rather something he heard, as a means of discussion. . This honestly makes the negative comments about the two in this video pointless. . It would be much different if they claimed it as "this is a fact, I researched it," and then stated some bs. Then it would be actually ok to call them idiots.
Exactly! That experiment really eased my mind about flying…or rather about an unexpected lack of flying… The truth is that planes very, very rarely "crash." They might have hard landings or lose some landing gear, but it’s so totally unlikely that you’ll be on a plane that actually crashes. And if your plane does lose its wings or encounters an unexpected object like a mountain, the likelihood of survival is very low no matter how you brace.
@@DaveTexasvery true, people don’t understand how uncommon a plane crash is. Sure we hear about what seems like quite a few crashes each year, but there are thousands of flights per day, millions per year. The chance of you being in a plane crash is significantly lower than you getting into an accident on your way to work
is not hard to think a little bit to understand that airliners spend a whole lot money to find the safest mesures. If they say something, don't argue, just listen and follow their direction. That's their job. What happens when you discuss with someone expert on their field and that you have no idea what you are talking about? 100% you'll put yourself in a very bad situation. Just listen
As a retired airline pilot myself I'm in full agreement with you. The 💩 they think we're up to in all the conspiracy theories are ridiculous and past annoying.
as a random Internet person.. yea same lol. damn these influencers are dumb. do they manage to put their socks on correctly in the morning? wait.. don't answer that...
"influencers" are the worst byproduct of this narcissistic society that we inhabit and that term is something that should've never been a part of our lexicon. Thank goodness you are the voice of reason. Keep up the great work.

The fact that influencers get rewarded insane amounts of money for essentially being clowns is absurd. Think of all the hours, pain, sweat and tears people put in day in day out to change the world and get paid peanuts, this is the true failure of society. Anyone with a degree or professional qualification, who contributes to society in any positive and impactful way should be on a better wage than a dumbass influencer, who is offering very little to society.
Influencers are the main danger in the modern world wherever you look, I'm a mountaineer and they're single handedly putting many lives at risk encouraging people to take on routes beyond their skillset, it's very worrying how big an influence they can be and how many people listen to them. I'm also an auditor and we always joke about the aeronautics industry having some of the most extreme and vigorous systems in place for constant and continued safety checking of gear and equipment, because they do!
@markjones127 beyond their skills etc, unfortunately their name gives them away to the intelligent.. if you can be influenced by morons who don't leave their ai houses then you may already be in trouble..after it's stupid that gets the attention...just take a look at pilot debrief who nails it when he says, " some people just aren't meant to fly!"
As an actual aviation maintenance tech, that second tiktok really made me angry. What a huge pack of lies. We check EVERYTHING on that plane at set intervals determined by the FAA and each manufacturer/buyer (airline/cargo company/etc). The emergency oxygen system has expiration dates, as does every piece of emergency equipment. Maintenance swaps them out for new if one expires. Yes. We keep track. And deferrals are only allowed for certain items, and many have restrictions set in, which are all determined for safety reasons. These "influencers" really annoy me how dangerous their misinformation can be.
Think she’s watched too many episodes of Aircrash Investigation. Everyone’s an expert these days. There’s no way a LAME would sign off on a defect and let an aircraft fly. Well not in my country or yours either. Social media can be very dangerous. Keep up your good work of making the skies safer
ValuJet Flight 592 even had a fire caused by expired oxygen generators in their cargo bay in 1996 so I believe now there are restrictions on transporting those. So expiries of those have existed at least that long.
@@KH-rc7tl well, those, who watched Aircrash investigations, know that crashes almost never happened for the same reason because, almost, after every crash there are changes to procedures, or even aircraft design aimed at preventing that particular scenario from happening again. Unless it is Boeing with friends in the FAA...
Mainntenance here: The oxygen masks and "PSU" (passenger service units) get looked over every C-check. The masks get their oxygen from "oxygen generators" or "candles" that get activated when you give a strong jerk to the strings that deploy with the masks. Typical arrangement is 3 masks (seats) per candle. The candles have a shelf life. They get recycled or otherwise disposed regularly.

@@NickCarter1974 I mean technically yes but we all know that her choice of words sends a specific message. She wouldn't call a pilot a "random flying guy". Just say technician or engineer or whatever if you're not sure of the exact job title.
My uncle survived the East Midlands BMA crash because he followed the instructions of professionally trained crew. Safety on aircraft is so advanced these days that most people survive the crash; it's what they do after that kills them. I'm. a frequent flyer but I ALWAYS follow the safety instructions/video. Muscle memory plays a part too; many people can't get out of their seats because they are busy pressing the seat belt release; it's lift and separate. When you are stressed, you won't necessarily figure that out. Thank you for keeping us protected from influencers.
Not to mention, if that position was designed to kill you, that could be proved and if it was proved, that would be multiple lawsuits FAR, FAR bigger than anything we have seen. Multiple airlines would be sued into oblivion and multiple people responsible for those policies would go to jail. The airlines would be risking far more with a position designed to kill you.
in the US in the modern day this kind of isn't true. These things are factored in to cost assessments and most likely the airlines would face a penalty that is less than the money they saved from doing the thing, and nobody in any position of real power would spend a day in jail. However, the fact that it hasn't actually been claimed by anyone of any repute (not just government/media-anointed "experts", but really ANYONE with a reputation in biology or crash investigation) let alone proven in the decades of commercial air travel and that it just popped up as some dumbass aspect of the US political culture war a few years ago really tells me all I need to know about it's veracity.
@Person01234 I actually remember this theory from Mythbusters. They tested different positions and found the crash position is the safest for you by far. About the only truth to the myth was that a wrongful death suit is cheaper than the cost of a crash injury.
This isn't true if anyone can reasonably prove that this is the worst advice or really bad advice that person or entity would make an insane amount of money@@Person01234
Yes, it would be criminal and hundreds if not thousands would go to jail. It’s situations like this where I wonder if platforms like UA-cam do us a disservice by amplifying the voices of extremely uneducated people.
Seeing that you are now a captain really caught me off guard! I even looked back at your other videos to make sure I didn’t miss any info on that. What a great surprise! Congratulations Captain!
A long time ago, my husband was on a flight and the captain refused to take off. It was a small plane, so he came into the cabin and apologized for the delay. He said it was going to be a while because of the paperwork, that it was something easy enough to fix, but he will not fly until it will be taken care of. Safe to say passengers (my husband included) where happy to wait. So, yes, if the captain feels that is not safe, they just don't fly. BTW, congrats on your promotion.
Light aircraft twin prop qualified pilot here I hear you never decided not to fly but have rejected a take off before V1 twice, both times was gut instinct ,out of both of those times one saved me and a few other people. The first turned out the failure was like an engine light in a car , thats fine to still keep driving in an aircraft their is no tolerance nor second guessing .
It is actually a culture that the aviation industry has worked hard at to deliberately create. In the bad old days, pilots might have felt pressured to fly anyway. These days, pilots are empowered to say no without any pushback from their employer.
I once flew from Dulles International to Harrisonberg, VA in a small twin prop plane. There were thunderstorms in the area and the captain came into the waiting area to tell us he didn’t want take off until the weather cleared. My fellow passengers were all griping but I thanked the captain for his care.
I feel like a lot of people don't realize the pilots are also people who probably don't want to die either. They're not mindless drones who are like "okay, let see how we can kill as many people as possible to minimize lawsuits!"
I was on a plane where the flaps failed. I learned that same day what flaps are for. If we didn’t listen to the flight crew, I believe that there would be a few injuries on the flight. Especially spinal injuries. Our necks are not created to bounce back and forth and side to side with extreme force. The flight attendants also told us to raise our seatbelt as high as possible and buckle up tight. Had anyone not done that, it too would have caused an injury of some sort. The landing that day was extremely hard and fast and my waist had a few bruises from the seatbelt but the pilots did an amazing job with landing safely and keeping the people calm. They acted as if it was a simple problem, they deal with every day. I don’t know how serious it really was because the crew were so calm and knowledgeable.
For novice pilots it would have been a very big deal but pilots do train how to land without flaps but it makes a medium task to a very challenging one with a big plane
Basically, without the flaps they have to land at a much faster speed (Extending the flaps essentially makes the wings bigger, which allows the plane to maintain lift and continue flying even at slower speeds, such as those used during takeoff and landing) Obviously you want to be going as slow as possible while landing (without the plane stalling out) so that the landing is as smooth as possible. Coming in without flaps means you’ll be going really fast (in order to avoid stalling), which unfortunately leads to a rough landing But if they can manage to get the plane on the ground, then they can use things like the landing gear brakes, air brakes, and thrust reversers to slow down rapidly, despite the extra speed
Congratulations Captain Kelsey Hughes on your first video with the 4th stripe. You did not say it, but we sure noticed it between this and last week. Well deserved. You teach, inspire and share your love of flying in a really down to earth manner. Blue side and thumbs up!
I just noticed you have four stripes now. Congratulations for your promotion! My niece was also just promoted to captain, and she’s the 4th female captain in the airline. A pride in our family.
Mythbusters tested this on S3/E13. They did find that commercial aviation related life insurance payouts tend to be cheaper than life long disability payouts. Despite this, they also found that the brace position where you lean forward with your arms on the seat in front of you tends to be much more safe than not bracing.
@@nicolasadams835yeah this is a very good point too. If an accident happens and the media even slightly thinks that the deaths may have to do with the brace position the airlane stock is gonna hit the ground faster than the crashed plane
@@nicolasadams835 Conspiracy much? The fact is the brace position is safer. WTF would you need to factor in stock prices? That's just a stupid comment.
Congrats on the upgrade. I'm an Emirates Captain and remember very clearly how great it felt when the check pilot handed me my new shoulder boards...one of the biggest days in any commercial pilot's life. Well done.
Congratulations Captain Hughes ! I am delighted for you , long overdue ! I'm a private pilot with no ambitions of joining the airlines . That was actually my dream when I was a kid but ended up going to med school instead. Again, congratulations Captain .
Hey there, I’m an Avionics Tech that works on B737-800NG’s and the only thing I would change about this video is the use of the word “broken” and instead I would say “inoperative” Happy & SAFE flying dude 😎
Congratulations Captain Kelsey! Thank you for defending truth in the face of such relentless stupidity. These awful people profit by harming society and there seems no way to stop it.
I am a FAA licensed Flight Dispatcher. For every aircraft operation's manual there is a list of items that can be broken or not working and the airplane is still allowed to fly. There is also a list of items that prevent the plane from being dispatched if they are broken or are not operable. It all has to do with the safe operation of the aircraft.
Same for school bus inspections at the beginning of the day. Some stuff downs the bus (brakes, school bus lights, etc) and some stuff maintenance can fix when you return from getting the kids to school (one headlight out, etc).
@@Mid-Michigan-Outdoors There is a Master Minimum Equipment List for the aircraft type. The airline can create a MEL based off this Master list that is more restrictive, and this depends on the type of operation and routes they fly.
In forty four years of rescue work, I have only ever seen a spine driven into a skull once. That person had jumped from the 22nd floor of a tower block and landed feet first, they collapsed and the impact on his pelvis and coccyx drove the spine up. The damage was severe but not immediately fatal, he was making noises and tried to get help. The person who called 999 was distraught and vomiting. He didn't make it and I was at his post mortem the following day. He took a few hours to finally die, which was a blessing as there wasn't much of him that had no damage. 42 years later I can still remember the whole thing clearly, including the smell as he drunk a bottle of whiskey just before he jumped.
Oh my.... 22nd floor?? And still alive for a few hours.... That's horrible Also feel for the person for called the emergency number..... That must have kept them up at night for a while
Congrats Capt Left chair! Seriously, congratulations on your upgrade. I decided to go the private pilot route and considered commercial flying but my career was already set for Bio Medical Engineering. I loved what I do. Now retired but still flying.
The flight attendant “Sierra Mist” was fired years ago for her inappropriate social media. I would take anything she says with a grain of salt. She is a popular topic on flight attendant discussion boards
Wasn’t she the til tok airline attendant lady that also had a of. I remember one on tic tok talking about all the attendants and pilots she’s screwed. Incredibly trashy tbh
Yeah. She has/had an only fans. She would hint at it in stories she would tell about being inappropriate with CO workers. Saying to go to that page to get the whole story. No wonder she had so many followers 🙄
Yes just like the previous comment not to confuse money with brains we should not confuse ex flight attendants seeking publicity with being honest and truthful. Sadly sensationalism is what she's selling and that's a long way from the truth
A sign of our times, people talking out of their butts, or intentionally spreading misinformation for clout. Thanks for making videos like this, and being always so professional! I´m a biologist, so here are my two cents: the spine is a collection of vertebrae, anyone that has suffered even a hard fall or has been hit by a car knows that your spine compresses, vertebrae can be smashed together or be fractured, and your spinal cord can be pinched or even severed. In the scenario Matt talks so confidently incorrectly about, your cervical vertebrae could be compressed against the base of your skull (which is very very hard in comparison) if you have braced yourself and kept your head down. You'll probably have some neck issues, but it beats the alternative of smashing your face against the seat before you and eating your own teeth... really, these people need to be held accountable.
After a particularly "rough landing" where we were told to "brace" with a very hard landing followed by hard braking, I witnessed the overhead bin pop open with a carry-on bag flying forward and slamming someone in the back of the head of another person who didn't "brace" splitting him open, profusely bleeding. Keep your heads down people. We all walked off, but scary as hell.
It surprises me how folks who are casual observers will tell people to ignore safety advice given by trained staff, I don't bother to challenge them, but try to make sure others realise that H&S advice will normally be best advice!
After. a few close calls, and a background of adventurous sports, i've always been safety first. That actually led to my only crash, when I hired an instructor on a murky day, he got lost, instead of admitting this, ( I could have got us out ) He flew me in to a mountain, the undercarriage was removed by a cliff and we sat on a ledge!
Oh, I just noticed that you have your fourth stripe! Congratulations! Of course I only know you through your channel, but you come across as a very competent and professional pilot. I’m sure you’ll have a long and successful career in aviation.
Hypoxia is seriously scary. It’s like being drunk but you have no reason to realize you’re drunk because you didn’t have anything. Then your brain just loses all sense of danger and you just let yourself die even if you could easily save yourself.
Oh my.... I thought something was off on the uniform but I wasn't paying enough attention until now. You're absolutely right! Kelsey is a captain now!! :) CONGRATZ Kelsey!!!!
I am a day late and 3/4 way through, looked over at vid (was just listening) and saw that! Grats indeed. Has he made any vlog talking about how one gets the next stripe or did I miss it?

My kids were scared on a flight we were on because it had a little bit of turbulence. I told them that the pilots have just as much interest in living as you do so they'll fly the plane safely.
As an adult who is still made a little uncomfortable by turbulence my favorite self soothe is to remind myself that turbulence is just like bumps in the road, that may help too if you fly again soon :)
I always look at the cabin staff, if they are calm there is no reason for me to worry, they go through this every day on the job they know better than me
@@momain5483I was afraid to fly most of my life (it was totally irrational - so glad I’m over it) and used to tell myself the same thing re: turbulence. That’s exactly what it is, after all 😊

Congrats on the promotion, CAPT Kelsey! Well done! and I have no doubt that you can handle the extra weight of that 4th bar! Apparently, these people get off on making people fear flying. Thanks for the REAL education from an aircraft maintainer.
You made captain! Congratulations Kelsey! As for these "Influencers", They play on peoples fears to make money. It amazes me that people believe them, but they do... Keep up the great videos Capt Kelsey!
Kelsey noticed that 4th stripe while you were talking. Congratulations Captain! Well done! Also thank you for putting these PSA's out there. For those other than us in the industry, people need to hear reality and feel safe to enjoy the best way to travel.
I literally noticed 5 minutes in lol. I think that it’s incredible that you have achieved that milestone! I think it’s even more incredible that you didn’t “have” to say anything about it. I admire that.
Also worth noting: Most plane accidents/disasters do not involve a "head-on" crash. That would require a nose dive or an unexpected mountain. In most cases, whatever mechanical issue is causing trouble still allows the pilots, who have thousands of hours of experience, to at least mitigate the risk by gliding in. It is in those situations, as well as rough landings, downbursts, etc, that large amounts of flying debris become hazardous, or a fast exit from the airplane is necessary.
Let me just say, I am SOOO bloody tired of stupid people becoming famous, instead of be pointed at and laughed off the platform. Thanks for setting that stupidity straight, Kelsey.
We used to gatekeep publishing. We lost out on a LOT of great publication that just never made it past the gatekeepers even though they were worthy (maybe even more worthy than most published material). BUT we also gatekept 99% of the idiots out too. Hindsight is showing us that was probably better. Can't really go back now though.
Stupid people get famous because they have lots of stupid followers, very sadly, in millions. The people who laugh at them are miniscule, just like us. Gen Z could have had so much potential, but it will just go wasted in making Tik Toks and Instagram "content".
Rule of thumb: don’t listen to someone who hasn’t extensively studied or experienced a subject matter, or wouldn’t stand in front of their bosses or customers and say the same thing. Instant gratification through social media has replaced common sense for so many… those talking and those listening.
Even someone paid to train me doesn't mean they are competent. One can usually tell when specific questions get s asked - A competent person generally is happy to answer - share their knowledge. The concept of influencer is something that goes over my head. Some un-vetted person blabbing for views is not a reliable source.
But the pilots and flight attendants haven't studied the subject matter of crash survival. They're just telling you what they're required to tell you. People like to watch channels like this and think being a pilot qualifies what is being said, but they're often talking about things that have nothing to do with the pilot. I'm not saying they don't know what they're talking about but being a pilot doesn't mean they would know. Lots of instructors I've had can tell you what they learned, but have no clue if something is true or not, but will argue with people who've actually tried things and found the explanation to be wrong. A lot know what airspeed to fly on approach and the correct attitude and it works. But they wouldn't be able to work out how to do things differently. They just do what they were taught and nothing else. Be careful thinking pilots are experts, especially be suspicious of those that act as if they are.
You just casually added a 4th strip and didn’t mention it!? Congratulations, Captain Kelsey! As an up and coming PP, with commercial aspirations, you’re an inspiration!
Re: "broken stuff" on an airliner. True story. We had a flight from Venice to Amsterdam Schipol. Passengers are on board, but the plane is not being pushed back, and the captain is making multiple trips up and down the aisle while on his cell phone. He disappears forward, and the intercom comes on. He says that during overnight servicing of the plane, ground crew hit the rear boarding door with a lift truck, and the door was damaged badly enough that it could not be closed, but that maintenance was working on it. Maybe a half hour later, he lights up the intercom again and says, " I have good news and bad news about the door! The good news is that maintenence got it closed, so we can leave. The bad news is that we cannot open the door from the inside. That means that we do not meet our certificate for being able to evacuate the plane in an emergency in the specified time. So now, we need sixteen people to volunteer to take a later flight, so that we are within our cert." The process began, and it took about an hour to get the needed sixteen folks off the palne so we could leave, but we did get it done and we made our connection for ORD. And that was how it was handled with a full plane and a non functional slide (due to the door).
I trust Captain Kelsey (Congratulations!) over some silly 'influencers' every day of the week and twice on Sunday. Hardest thing about watching this video is peeling my eyes off the roof of my head from rolling them so much...jeez. Keep calling 'em out, Captain! Keep the blue side up!❤❤

This is basically common sense of physics when something comes to an abrupt stop. Things come from behind.... As a former aircraft mechanic "influencers" like these are beyond aggravating. And to the "FA" who "reveal all"....Well...again, to us who, litterally, through blood and sweat pour all our pride and discipline into our work to make sure we are keeping aviation safety at top level; I hope I never meet her... Also, our colleagues at the front of that plane do the same. Listen to them! Thank you CAPTAIN Kelsey for helping ALL of us aviation professionals with your fantastic delivery of how it really is!
Congrats on the promotion. 100 per cent gratitude to flight deck crew for getting anyone & everyone to their destination safely. 100 per cent gratitude to cabin crew for reminding fellow passengers not to take carry on stuff during an evacuation.
Thank you, Kelsey, for calling out and correcting these idiot influencers saying idiot things because they're idiots. They know nothing about aviation or aviation safety and just spout nonsense. It's irresponsible. I really hope the next time there is an in-flight emergency, passengers don't put their feet up or recline their seats because they "don't want their spines to go through their heads on impact."
Oh stfu. My god. They’re not ‘idiots’ for sharing their thoughts on what we all think about. The flight attendant is the fuckin idiot, not the comedians. Dumb fuckin take.
They're not saying dumb things because they're dumb. They're saying scary things because fear sells. You don't get a million views for saying aircraft are safe and we've developed safe practices. You get a million views by spreading dangerous misinformation.
Congratulations Captain! I hope with the promotion that you keep the channel going strong through the new year (recalling last year's New Years video). It wouldn't be a Sunday morning without you!
A number of years ago The Food Babe had an article about how dangerous flying in a plane is because they pressurize the cabin and that puts pressure on your internal organs. I sent her a message letting her know that the "pressurized cabin" is at a pressure that is less than sea level. She never responded. LOL
She also said it’s better to sit in the front of the plane because there’s more oxygen as they pump it in from the front. Hard to tell if she’s more of a con artist or more stupid. She’s definitely both.
@@speedbird9313because pressure st sea level is 14.7 psi….and pressure in an airplane “at pressure” is 11 to 12 PSI. 🤦🏼♂️. 14.7-12= less than sea level.
As a heavy maintenance mechanic, I can say that the O2 gen have an expiration date of either 10, 15 or 20 years depending on the models and we replace them 25 months before the expiration date. The mask themselves also have their own exp. date. The gens are in fact, not filled with oxygen but work in a fashion similar to a grenade, you pull on the mask to put it on which will pull on a pin that once remove activate the chemical reaction creating oxygen (also the generator itself becomes really hot so dont try to touch it). The generators are rated to produce the O2 for about 12-15min (more than enough time for the plane to go down in altitude to a point where you can breath normally) but out of the hundred+ that I have activated they all seem to last somewhere between 20 to 30 min
As an engineer safety critical systems are always designed with a healthy safety margin. If you have to guarantee that every unit is able to generate at least 12 minutes of usable oxygen you have to take into account that some will perform a bit worse than the mean. It seems like they used a safety margin of double the requirement to guarantee that even the worst performing unit is comfortably above the limit.
Apparently this guy didn't watch Mythbusters growing up. Back in the day they tested different landing positions and did indeed find that these different positions that they tell people to use were effective in reducing injuries. I'm basically thinking they need to make the whole series available on UA-cam, like they made the episode that tested how to reduce spreading the flu during the pandemic.
Saying “this guy” is confusing to readers like the first commenter. This guy would generally be thought to refer to the main person who is creating this reaction and educational video (pilot).
@@k.w.1459exactly. I agree. I think they meant Matt and that show, but I can’t be sure. By using ‘this’ versus ‘that’ he’s also insinuating a closer proximity to us, ie. the pilot on this channel.

Yo, first thing I noticed was your captain bar. Congratulations, thanks for keeping the aviation world safe. I barely started the video and I got excited. I still haven't watched most of it. Your explanations have helped me explain to people who aren't frequent flyers why a plane is safe, and going into technical stuff you explain and I remember enough to calm people down. My buddy is an AF pilot but took me up in small craft. Thanks for all you do. I've been flying as a passenger as a kid and have always found it interesting. Thanks Kelsey. Keep the blue side up. I think I still have my wings somewhere back when they let kids visit the cockpit and talk to the pilots. Some of my more fun kid memories.
That’s so ridiculous, and I guarantee if he was in a situation where a flight attendant was screaming brace brace brace he would get down without second thought.
I worked for my county medical examiners office, I assisted investigation and removed many 10's of thousands of dead bodies... I saw many things including plane crashes, and a few very strange things. But I can assure you that spines can not shoot through someones head.
I damn near lose what little faith I have left in humanity when I think about how many ignorant buffoons pay attention to “influencers”. No one should pay attention to them. They should be ignored.
Most of the people who pay attention to them are kids and teens. People who can't and don't know any better. Adults do it too but this is a kid thing mainly
Isn't this literally a video from an influencer pilot tho? I feel like its just like everything else, bad influencers should be ignored, but channels like 74 Gear and Blancolirio are incredible for education, but they are still influencers
I’m a flight attendant. We do learn all of these things specifically. The reason you’re told to move your seat to the upright… same reason they put you in that bracing position… because you will be thrown forward. The further you’re reclined, the further you have to travel before you hit something. The distance you have to travel matters, the angle you’re positioned matters, the angle of the seat you may hit matters. If you’re bracing, you are putting yourself in the position you’ll ultimately end up in, reducing your chances of getting a head injury, a spinal injury or whiplash. Your odds of surviving a plane crash are very low but people do. This little things increases your survival chance.
It depends on the type of crash. My understanding is for every "plane hits the ground, everyone dies" crash there are a lot more where the plane runs off the runway, or the plane hits heavy turbulence, and the people who don't hit their head on something survive.
@@MrBirdnose Where did you get that 'understanding'? The person who gave you that understanding - did they point to any studies (that reached that conclusion after examining a large number of such events)? If not, it seems like they were just following the same "it makes sense to me" argument that the influencers are making. Did they also suggest that pilots should fly with their seats reclined in case they hit turbulence?
Last week the some of the overhead cabinets opened on landing. So I can definitely see stuff flying through the air. Same reason you are not supposed to put things in the back window of a car…
Thank you. Being a retired ATC and trying to explain to people why these UA-camrs are wrong, it's nice to hear someone who really knows what they are talking about with really good explanations.
In my mind “influencer” is practically a derogatory term for very extrovert but not particularly bright person, who use social media and cheap psychological trick of sensationalism - to make money on even less bright “followers”. Glad to see there are educational and informative channels (like this one) to challenge their bull***t.
I watched the 727 crash test full of cameras, avatars and shock patches. Some of the "people" were sitting up, some reclined and some in the crash position. Amazingly, most were better off in the crash positions so I guess influencers only try to sound like they know. Don't confuse them with facts...😅😅😅
Fellow cabin crew here. These brace positions are very important. What the woman in one of the reference videos showed was the brace position for first row passengers and cabin crew at the aft galley facing the front. In the case when you have nothing in front of you to lean on or make impact with, this is the safest position. Also beyond it being common sense to bend over in the brace position, us cabin crew are taught all about this and the importance of the brace position during an emergency landing. This is also why, at least at my airline, one of our duties during boarding is to brief over-wing exit row passengers and mention the brace position for the row because there is more space between the seats. The two men really have no idea what they are talking about and it is sad to see that many impressionable people will probably hear them and believe it, possibly putting themselves and others in serious danger.
That's not correct. There's more money in a lifetime crippling injury than a wrongful death. You have to consider the expenses for care and misery of every minute of everyday of a life-time injury and the impact of wheeling the injured person into court. A person suffering every minute for the rest of their life gets more than a dead person.
As an actual lawyer who has handled both types of cases--inter vivos "injuries" and wrongful death--let me give you the correct answer: it depends. It depends on damages and the level of culpability of the defendant. And there are also many state laws preventing non-dependents and/or non-citizen plaintiffs from bringing wrongful death lawsuits.
Congrats Kelsey on your 4 bars! I enjoy your channel a lot, and have been subscribed for some time. I am also a retired airlines professional and value how you have created such a fun and accessible channel to discuss and share lot of interesting topics for everyone. On the contrary I was more upset with the "flight attendant" than those wealthy youtubers, as they are not either aviation professionals or truly well-informed aficionados. But a professional saying those things is irritating. Flight Crew perfectly know them. They are trained and taught about MEL, Oxygen masks, etc.
I've never been an airline professional, and the flight attendant's vid cheesed me off the most for the same basic reasons you gave. The other guys can't claim expertise in the area, whereas she should be able to. And granted, not everyone can know absolutely every single little thing about their chosen area, but they should at least be aware of the basics. Like, come on. Ugh. So incredibly irresponsible. And with how angry it made me, someone who's never worked in the industry, I can only imagine how upset it must make someone who HAS worked in the industry.
she has an onlyfans so she lacks common sense from that fact alone. Also pretty sure she was fired and is no longer a flight attendant after sharing some salacious stories and tips when it came to that job. @@canadiancritter
congrats on becoming a captain Kelsey!! shows that you're excelling at piloting while still excelling at making great videos here! keep up the good work 💜
Congratulations Captain! Just came home after some flying and commented to one flight attendant that it must be so annoying when people won't do what they are told. Like "please be seated and wait until the seat belt sign is off". And far to many stand up way before... I've seen people almost falling when the plane started to move again, so wouldn't dream of remove my seat belt a second to early...
My daughter was on a Southwest flight out of Love field which had a cabin attendant doing the safety briefing and about half the passengers were ignoring her. She stopped and yelled, "HEY sit down and shut up. We're here to save your ass not to kiss it."
Kelsey, another great video! Thank you for correcting misinformation about commercial aviation. I 100% agree that some of the information out there from influencers is absolutely terrible and misguided just for the sake of views/$$$. As an A&P mechanic for the past 20 years your last segment defending my profession was especially gratifying for me. My signature on those aircraft forms is my bond with you as aircrew that my work is done with accuracy and that I am willing to put my life, job, paycheck and freedom on the line to say that the aircraft is safe to fly. For her to call me, and my colleagues a “random maintenance guy” and insinuate that I don’t care is beyond insulting!
A flight attendant with a fear of flying? That would be the last person I would want on my flight during an emergency that is supposed to keep everyone calm and instruct anyone in what to do.
I had to laugh at Matt’s explanation of how airlines really want you to die in a crash so you can’t sue. Obviously you can’t but your family can sue for wrongful death. Congrats, Kelsey, on making Captain! I would feel very, very safe on any airplane you were flying.
Congratulations *CAPTAIN* Kelsey! You say nothing about it, because you are modest as ever, a bright light of intelligence, common sense and font of information in this vast internet landscape. All the best to you sir 👏👍✈️
As a pilot I always find it hilarious that people think I would even be on that aircraft let alone take off if something wasn't safe. Luckily for the passengers, I value my life and by getting myself there safe....they get there safe also.
I was on a flight where the flap actuators were clearly stuck during pre-flight checks. The captain decided that she was not taking off with this problem, and I rather fear she got into a lot of trouble with the company for this decision, as it was one of the rock-bottom no-frills outfits.
@@KH-rc7tl Air Crash Investigation is a pretty good documentation series. They might get some stuff wrong but I've never heard any ridiculous theories like "don't put your head down" in there. I called bullshit on that “flight attendant’s” videos as soon as she started to pop up. She’s clearly doing it for views. Some of the things she’s said are incredibly unprofessional. She still amassed millions of followers somehow. What I’ve learned is the world is majority-full of idiots, and they all stick together.
She also talks about how she gets drunk, or hooks up with the pilot during flights. I think she was a flights attendant at one point but either quit or was fired. There's no way she's actively working as flight attendant saying the things she does.
@@OliviaandtrinaCorrect. She was sorta correct with the crash pads though and the crew members hooking up. That happens more with the really younger crew members and the regional airlines. I saw some of that years ago when I was younger, BUT you have to go looking for it. Certain crash pads were known for that. She was looking for it probably
Congrats Captain Kelsey! Your humility is surely noticed. However, I’d love a video over the differences between your responsibilities as an F/O and now a captain. Congrats!
They should be loudly and publicly ridiculed and refuted, not by government choking out free speech. It would not end with stopping stupidity. Use free speech to do as this pilot here is doing, pointing out how wrong the misinformed are. It is not illegal to be wrong or to be a sphincter, and should not be, but it is not illegal to point out when someone is being wrong.
@@michaeljarvis5489its just that sometimes audience based scoring depends greatly on audience pool. Which i doubt is smart enough if they look at this kind of show. Congratulations on becoming a captain! 👍 I wish you would do "Hollywood vs. Reality" again. There is another movie I can recommend: Netflix "Lift" with Kevin Hart when they try to rob the cargo of an A380 in mid-flight. Aviation stuff to review starts at 57:30. ✈
I used to work in an ER in a coastal hospital. There were many fatal deceleration injuries. None ever involved the spine exiting through the base of the skull. There were many spinal injuries, and many brain injuries involving the skull, but none involving penetration of the skull by the spine. Vertebrae are MUCH more fragile than the skull.
@minnesotajack1 and what's funny about these idiot's claims is that staying upright during a crash puts you more at risk of basilar skull fracture. Last I checked, they don't have HANS devices on airplanes.
This is the perfect example of why some people just shouldn't be on the internet 🤦🏻♂️ Like, if you don't know what you're talking about, then just be quiet. Thank you for calling these people out sir!

I'm no plane crash survivor, but I was in a car crash once, where I was in the backseat with no seat belt on. I knew we were going to crash and did the "brace for impact" thing instinctually... Don't confuse being wealthy with being intelligent.
It's true. Some people with low IQ's are very wealthy.

The MythBusters did a show on the brace position, and found that the least damage was made to the test crash dummy when in the brace position
Does she fly for Air Koryo?
All those influencers are just watching each others TikTok's and trying to get views without actually knowing a thing. They are so annoying.
Mainntenance here:
The oxygen masks and "PSU" (passenger service units) get looked over every C-check.
The masks get their oxygen from "oxygen generators" or "candles" that get activated when you give a strong jerk to the strings that deploy with the masks.
Typical arrangement is 3 masks (seats) per candle.
The candles have a shelf life. They get recycled or otherwise disposed regularly.

EXACTLY
in the US in the modern day this kind of isn't true.

This has happened at least three times in my experience. She’s nuts.
Basically, without the flaps they have to land at a much faster speed
(Extending the flaps essentially makes the wings bigger, which allows the plane to maintain lift and continue flying even at slower speeds, such as those used during takeoff and landing)
Obviously you want to be going as slow as possible while landing (without the plane stalling out) so that the landing is as smooth as possible. Coming in without flaps means you’ll be going really fast (in order to avoid stalling), which unfortunately leads to a rough landing
But if they can manage to get the plane on the ground, then they can use things like the landing gear brakes, air brakes, and thrust reversers to slow down rapidly, despite the extra speed

Mythbusters tested this on S3/E13. They did find that commercial aviation related life insurance payouts tend to be cheaper than life long disability payouts. Despite this, they also found that the brace position where you lean forward with your arms on the seat in front of you tends to be much more safe than not bracing.
Did their calculations include the loss of stock price attributed to deaths on an airplane?
@@nicolasadams835yeah this is a very good point too. If an accident happens and the media even slightly thinks that the deaths may have to do with the brace position the airlane stock is gonna hit the ground faster than the crashed plane

He didn't make it and I was at his post mortem the following day. He took a few hours to finally die, which was a blessing as there wasn't much of him that had no damage. 42 years later I can still remember the whole thing clearly, including the smell as he drunk a bottle of whiskey just before he jumped.

The flight attendant “Sierra Mist” was fired years ago for her inappropriate social media. I would take anything she says with a grain of salt. She is a popular topic on flight attendant discussion boards
Hahaha. What an idiot. So basically, she has no flight attendant experience.

That's a good reference and helps me make the right decision in that situation. ;)

Remember when all of those “experts” said the jab would “stop the spread”? Or how about the 50 “experts” who swore the laptop was “disinformation” 😂
So now, we need sixteen people to volunteer to take a later flight, so that we are within our cert."
The process began, and it took about an hour to get the needed sixteen folks off the palne so we could leave, but we did get it done and we made our connection for ORD.
And that was how it was handled with a full plane and a non functional slide (due to the door).
Just noticed you've been promoted, Kelsey! Congratulations on that, Captain! 🎉

A number of years ago The Food Babe had an article about how dangerous flying in a plane is because they pressurize the cabin and that puts pressure on your internal organs. I sent her a message letting her know that the "pressurized cabin" is at a pressure that is less than sea level. She never responded. LOL
Uhm, say what..?! The pressurized cabin is below sea level? 😆How do you figure?? 🤔

As a Pilot myself I appreciate you saying this brother. Keep up the great work with keeping us all safe out there!

I understand that spines absorb impact better vertically not horizontally hence the brace position.
I damn near lose what little faith I have left in humanity when I think about how many ignorant buffoons pay attention to “influencers”. No one should pay attention to them. They should be ignored.
Not only ignored, but also - in case someone copied their dumb ideas - sued for endangering others.
Social media is destroying the US and the rest of the world for that matter.
influencer means advertiser.
As someone who has immediate terror on planes, I just want to say thank you. Good informatio helps me take less medication ♥️
Bah, what does a flight attendant know compared to a tic toker? Facts and common sense have no place here!
@@thia41012 😂 that's right don't let the tik tacers know this.. natural selection

In my mind “influencer” is practically a derogatory term for very extrovert but not particularly bright person, who use social media and cheap psychological trick of sensationalism - to make money on even less bright “followers”. Glad to see there are educational and informative channels (like this one) to challenge their bull***t.
150 years ago they'd be running a religion.
One of the best descriptions I have seen of these people.
Well said.
exactly.
I have said this MANY times before, but it bears repeating. A wrongful death lawsuit is MUCH more expensive than any injury lawsuit.
That's what I was thinking too... like "can the families of the dead not sue...?"
Accept in China
And if you tried to kill them (murder) you're in way more trouble than if you tried to save them (negligent homicide at worst)

Well said sir ! Thank you from all the techs - Retired old tech .
Are you a package?
@@kiddi3smallscuz I wanna deliver you to the wrong house, fool
@@kiddi3smalls No, he's a tulip.
I suppose airlines also keep death squads on retainer, just to make sure families can't sue either.
First thing I noticed as we were waiting for this eagerly. Wish all the best !
Congratulations *CAPTAIN* Kelsey! You say nothing about it, because you are modest as ever, a bright light of intelligence, common sense and font of information in this vast internet landscape. All the best to you sir 👏👍✈️
Wow, didn't notice that until I saw your comment. Awesome.
So modest. Love it
I thought something is different, but it didnt compute 😅
Ok so the fourth stripe is new! Cool
I was seeing that 4rth bar so cool for him
As a pilot I always find it hilarious that people think I would even be on that aircraft let alone take off if something wasn't safe.
I find it funny that everyone is an expert from watching Aircrash investigation !!!
@@KH-rc7tl Air Crash Investigation is a pretty good documentation series. They might get some stuff wrong but I've never heard any ridiculous theories like "don't put your head down" in there. There is actually pretty common sense information in there related to crashes and often if you pay attention you can get advice on what to do in survivable accidents.
Kelsey. Congratulations on your promotion to Captain. Hopefully I'm not the only one that noticed your 4th bar. Regarding this video. can't fix stupidity. Thanks
@@nodlimax yes I agree it’s a good series. I really just meant that people watch these type of shows and think they know the ins/outs of everything. I’ve worked 20+ years in aviation. Airlines and the regulator and that’s a new one on me !
What a modest guy. I didn't know exactly when you got that last stripe, incognito but suddenly in the next video i saw bam. The stripes appeared. I thought you took someone else's shirt by mistake. This is HUGE ,K. Kudos .
@@Oliviaandtrina So you found her page too...ya she a ho lol
@@OliviaandtrinaCorrect. She was sorta correct with the crash pads though and the crew members hooking up. That happens more with the really younger crew members and the regional airlines. I saw some of that years ago when I was younger, BUT you have to go looking for it. Certain crash pads were known for that. She was looking for it probably
Sometimes stupidity pays better than crime.
She amassed that many followers because tiktok causes severe brain rot, to the point that people actually forgo common sense and listen to an idiot
Congrats Captain Kelsey! Your humility is surely noticed. However, I’d love a video over the differences between your responsibilities as an F/O and now a captain. Congrats!
i think these "influencers" should be held liable for spreading this kind of very dangerous false information
@@michaeljarvis5489not by the government, held liable by the platforms they spread bullshit on
Court system too jank to do that
@@michaeljarvis5489its just that sometimes audience based scoring depends greatly on audience pool. Which i doubt is smart enough if they look at this kind of show.
I think the responsibility should be on the creator to fact check everything.. theres another option like forming 3rd party audit but it most likely wont outpace content creation
Liable of what injury? There has to be some type of damage done for liability.
Congratulations Kelsey on your Captain promotion!
YES!
Not to be morbid, but I’m guessing the most common is basilar skull fracture. That’s what happens to the race car drivers.
I think they think injuries work like fatalities in Mortal Kombat.
@minnesotajack1 and what's funny about these idiot's claims is that staying upright during a crash puts you more at risk of basilar skull fracture. Last I checked, they don't have HANS devices on airplanes.
@@bagenius5970
Sit in the back and hope for the best.
@@minnesotajack1 You're actually safer in the middle of the aircraft where the wings are attached. More structure there
Thanks for once again calling out the uninformed on the internet! By the way, congrats on your Captaincy- four stripes look good on you 😊👏
This is the perfect example of why some people just shouldn't be on the internet 🤦🏻♂️
Like, if you don't know what you're talking about, then just be quiet.
Thank you for calling these people out sir!
