This is called blue-eyed soul. These guys were the best. Bobby Hatfield with his beautiful tenor voice & Bill Medley with his deeper voice. They were magic together. And remember this is done live. No auto-tuning crap like today. And the songs had meaningful beautiful lyrics. Other great songs by them is "Soul & Inspiration", "Just Once In My Life", "Ebb Tide", "Rock & Roll Heaven" etc.

Nick, when you said you needed more of this type of music in your life, it made me realize how blessed my generation was. I was twelve when this came out and so the most amazing music was literally the backdrop of my life, all the way through my twenties. This may have been performed on the Andy Williams show, as Unchained Melody was. Although, there were a lot of those types of TV programs then. Loved watching your reaction!

Nick it was on Shindig. They were on the show from 1964-1966. The reason we have so many of their songs on video is because of this show. I'm very thankful for this show. If you didn't know here is a little history lesson. The Righteous Brothers opened for The Beatles first American tour but left them early to be apart of the pilot episode of Shindig. They were regulars on the show. Their song Little Latin Lupe Lu (written by Bill) was one of Elvis' favorites so he would have his people call the show to have them sing it almost every show.

To answer your question of the show they were on, they were regulars on Shindig! which ran from 1964-1966. In this copy, the uploader slowed the video down & swapped the live audio with a stereo version of the studio recording. The original hit was a mono Wall of Sound production by Phil Spector. The actual live audio in the original video has so much star struck girl screaming that the uploader swapped it for the stereo studio version, which is why the background strings are the only thing in the right track & blare loudly in your ear.

I've loved the Righteous Brothers my whole life!🥰💖 Together, they have so many iconic, soulful songs.. as well as solo songs while they were together. In addition to "(You've Lost that)Lovin' Feeling", some of my favorites are "You'll Never Walk Alone"(Ed Sullivan show is a great recording of that).. "Soul and Inspiration".. "Just Once In My Life"(written by Carole King/Gerry Goffin, & Phil Spector, who produced much of their recordings).. "Rock and Roll Heaven"(AWESOME Song; they've updated the song at least once to include more rock & roll legends who have passed since the song's initial release).. And many more! Some of their solo hits included Bobby's "Unchained Melody"(famously used in the movie "Ghost") and "Summertime"... Bill's "I Just Want To Make Love To You"😍; "Brown-eyed Woman"; and in '87 the theme song from the movie Dirty Dancing, "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" which was a duet with Jennifer Warnes; it earned Bill & Jennifer a Grammy award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with vocals!
Btw, a young Cher was among those who sang backup vocals on "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling"!😉
Other Interesting facts: The Righteous Brothers opened for The Beatles in their first U.S. tour! They also opened for The Rolling Stones on their American tour in late '64!
(Per Bill Medley in an interview)They got their name while they were playing a little club in Santa Ana called "John's Black Derby".. Some black U.S. Marines from El Toro Marine Base had been told that there were these 2 white guys singing R & B/Soul kind of music at the Black Derby and they should check it out; at that time, white singers were mostly known for the "Beach" sound of music, like "The Beach Boys", "Jan and Dean", etc., "Soda Pop" music.
A few of them Did go check out their show, and they couldn't believe how great they were; and at the end of a performance, one of the black Marines stood up & shouted, "That was Righteous, brother!" After that they'd greet them with "Hey righteous brothers, how you doin'?"
Bill and Bobby had been trying to think of a good name & had toyed around with a couple different ideas, but hadn't really found one they liked until they heard those comments. Bill laughed in an interview and said they'd never think to use that name themselves as it was generally considered a slang term black people used, they would feel sheepish appropriating it.. they didn't want to appear presumptuous or full of themselves, lol! But after those black Marines referred to them that way they thought.. "Why not, it's a great name, lol?!" And the rest is music history.
Also, the term "Blue-eyed Soul" was first used by black DJs to describe the Righteous Brothers; after they became popular, it became a general term for any white singer/group who sang what was then considered "black" music.
This is probably only interesting to me, lol☺️ but I went to the same high school as Bill Medley, Santa Ana High, in Santa Ana, Orange county, Calif.(though not at the same time; Bill graduated in '58, I was born the next year😉)
Thanks for your wonderful reaction to The Righteous Brothers and I hope you'll continue to check out their music, Nick; you're one of my top 3 reactionist(would that be the term?🤔😄 You're reactions are so enjoyable to watch - sincere, informative, heartfelt.. you call 'em like you see 'em and I appreciate you and your channel!😊

I would make a correction: Bill dropped out of school as soon as he could. Wasn't uncommon back in the '50s. (Sad to say, a high school drop out from that time was probably better educated than a lot of today's college students. The state of modern education. I digress.😊)
Not telling tales, he talks about I himself. And, as he says kids DON'T do that. He made sure his son and daughter, at least, finished high school.
Edit: The second son that is talked about was Karen's from her second marriage.

Recorded on the ABC hit prime time series called “Shindig!” The Righteous Brothers had been the opening act for The Beatles’ first American tour, but left it when producers of Shindig! made them the offer to become one of the regular, recurring house acts on Shindig! Since Bob and Bill were from Southern California, not far from Hollywood where the show originated, it was only natural that they would jump at this golden opportunity. Not to mention the fact that if the show became a hit (which it did), they would gain a level of exposure that not even being on the bill on the Beatles national tour could give them.

The show was Shindig and it was live but for this video someone faded out all the girls screaming through the whole song. In this you can hear Bobby Hatfield's crystal clear notes without a head cold like he had in Unchained Melody. There is a good UA-cam compellation of some of their Shindig appearances. You even get to see these two clowning around playing keep away with the microphone. They were as funny as anyone else's comedy routine. Thank you for being a part of keeping their legacy of greatness alive for the newer generations.

Some of my favorite reactions to them are black people who have no clue they are white. Because honestly, if you just listen to the music, their voices are so incredibly rich and resonant and soulful, a lot of people's minds automatically think black singers. Mine was one of them. There is a reason this is called Blue Eyed Soul.

I’d like to see your reaction to “Too Much Heaven” by the BeeGees. They are brothers who have written all their own songs and their harmony is beautiful! This song was from 1979 I believe.

Maybe if you love an incredible voice you would like to listen to Park Hyo Shin singing one of my favourites, Breathe, also Sound of Winter or any of his songs. His voice is superb, the emotion he puts into his songs is unsurpassed in my opinion. I have always loved the Righteous Brothers.

I'm still waiting for another Blue Eyed Soul duo in 2024 to match the Righteous Brothers.
I know I'm waiting in vain. Powerful singing that touched our heart and soul like it did us Boomers back in 1964.

Someone already mentioned this was from shindig but it was remastered. They have some great songs on shindig. Little latin lupe lu was their first hit. It was a rocker.

Also - Bill Medley is touring with his daughter singing the duets with him. Find them online - it's very lovely!
