Dan, in my mind this sets the standard for how pickup comparison videos should be done. It's all played well, the guitar is tuned, the amp is miked well, and the clips are just long enough to make the point. Bravo!
The vintage p/u's sounded better in every scenario. That surprised me but the hot p/u's refused to wake up, even with increasing drive. Very well presented and informative demo.
I wouldn't say so, I've tried both the Vintage and the Hot 90 in the neck position and I think the Hot 90 is significantly better. The pick attack and focus is far better on the Hot 90, the Vintage 90 is difficult to focus and to get to distrort.
I also prefer the vintage, but I think the greatest determinant of which one you're gonna like is what your other guitars are and what your default amp settings are. If you mostly play dark-sounding humbucker guitars, the vintage might not have the focus you want. If you set your amps for Fender or Gretsch, you'll probably prefer the vintage.
Best pickup demo I've seen on UA-cam. Great presentation. I think based on that I would go for the hot one on the bridge and the Vintage on the neck. I would also wire them are them out of phase. Changing the balance between pickups gives you tons of tone variation. Very Strat like. Thanks again great video.

This is one of the best pickup comparison videos ive seen. I have the same guitar and although the stock pickups are ok, I wanted to change them out and was looking at Toneriders for this. After watching this vid, I think ill go for the Vintage in the Neck and Hot in the Bridge! Awesome video! Thanks :)
Dan, I liked the demo enough that I ordered a Hot Bridge and Vintage Neck. I put them in my Harley Benton SC450GT P90 because the stock pickups were pretty disappointing. It sounds incredible now. Even though it's a cheap ($160 US) guitar, I wouldn't hesitate for a moment to gig with it.
@@DanLeggatt I really like it. It has a few finish irregularities, but nothing too horrible given the price. The fingerboard looks like it has been dyed, but that's not uncommon. I leveled and dressed the frets and now it plays beautifully. My first "real" guitar was a 1969 Les Paul Deluxe so I wanted another Goldtop. I wouldn't necessarily put this on par with a Gibson, but it's still a totally useable instrument. The fingerboard feels just a little rough, so I will probably hit it with some ultra fine sandpaper, but it still plays really nice. No regrets at all.
@@mikestillwagon5675 I've got an Harley Benton Junior type. It's mahogany, it's been set up, it's had new hardware, including a Tonerider Vintage 90. Happy with it. Any kind of overdrive or distortion-just sounds better. Regardless.
Hi Dan, great way to demo pickups. I preferred the Vintage, they sounded cleaner and slightly more airy, like you said. I prefer having the option to knock some of the air off and dirty up a pickup rather than trying to clean up a hotter one. 👍🎸
Good point! I’m very similar in my approach to you by the sound of it. I do really like both sets but I think the vintage would be slightly more versatile. The extra girth of the hot set does sound killer with my Marshall origin. How’s the project guitar coming on mate?

@@DanLeggatt I'm went with the alnico 2's as that softer drive is usually what I prefer but have realised on this particular LP it highlights too much of the metallic, harder tones and loses some of that mids honk I had with the stock P90s...question for your opinion: 500K or 250K pots with the "hot" pickups?
i have this guitar and put the tonerider vintage P 90 pu set in it ( no 50's wiring ) , sounds great , a lot better ( more open and clearer ) then the original epi pu's ( wich did sound ok for a epi pu ) , so now i have a great lp with a nice chuncky neck for 525 euro !
Tough call...they both sound great. I'm a big fan of P90's. I think I gotta go with the Hot 90 though...seems like a bit richer low end, with just as much clarity on the high end. But like I said, I'd be happy with either. Probably gonna hafta try some!

These pickups sound great. IMO the "hot" are close to offering the best of both worlds. I saw one demo with a hot in the bridge and a vintage in the neck that sounded good too.
@@paulmitchell5349 I prefer the Hot 90, I have both in the neck version and the Hot 90 is far more focussed and sounds sexier distorted, to my ears. The Vintage 90 has a certain smoothness that the Hot 90 may not have, but I like a more focused sound overall.
The vintage ones sound warmer, more defined, structured and fuller, while the Hot ones sound dry and harsh and fluffy. Proof that Alnico II in p90's is the real vintage tone, if you want or need more drive go with a humbucker as this is what the humbucker was designed to replace for that very reason.
Thanks for some enlightenment Dan, I play an Epiphone Wilshire and as common with a lot of Epiphones the pickup is mounted further away from the bridge compared to Gibsons for some unforeseen reason ? Bearing this in mind I would definitely go for the Vintage as it seems brighter, more top end. Many thanks.

Great video. I bought a set if vintage p90s last year - I still haven't managed to install them in an SG project I'm working on. I was torn between the hot or vintage, but went with the vintage in the end.
I liked the vintage better in all the gain settings. It sounds open and clear. The hot pups sound overly compressed and too woofy. It sounds like these are a good value. I just might get a set for my next p90 build.

Thanks for the video I just got one of the Hot 90s for the neck from them. It tested out at 7.75k... I paired it with a Gibson "Lead" P90 in the bridge that tested @ 8.3k And dropped both into a new Vintage V100 GT Really digging this setup so far! much more traditional P90 tones Vs the Wilkinson WS90 P100 stacked pups that came in this guitar. I'm completely freekin hooked on P90s and find myself staring at all the other guitars trying to figure out how I can drop one into at least half of them... ;-)
I like both. Now I need another guitar. Hard to tell in this video but the hot p90s really have no note separation and are a mess. If you want a thick humbucker sound in a P90 then get the hot 90s
I preferred the Vintage set, I am looking to upgrade my P90's I have 3 Stacked M Series Wilkinson's which came stock, just too bright for me, like something warmer but I need 3 , the bridge pickup is rated at 14 K , not sure maybe I have to upgrade the neck and middle, and just keep the hot P90

I’m afraid I’ve never played the stock pickups. This guitar belongs to the guys at Tonerider and they dropped it off with the vintage set already installed. From the demos I’ve seen of this guitar in its stock state they sound a little bit ‘muffled’ for my taste but that could be down to a number of factors.

@@DanLeggatt I was referring to information missing when the change in pickups occurs and didn't mean to say there was a deficit in your video. I'm sure I'm not the only one who doesn't slavishly watch every second of UA-cam videos. Note that you use timestamps and "annotations on the screen" so that people "can skip around". You could have just as easily told people in your introduction that you later say what the exact sequence of tones was going to be (clean tone, pushed tone, light drive tone) and left it at that. You didn't do that probably because it's more helpful for the viewer to have the information at the point in the video when it is immediately relevant (at 1:08). You are, of course, using the international painter's tape communications scheme to communicate when the Hot 90s are installed and when the V90s are installed, which should have been clear to me. Unfortuntely, I missed that lecture on signals while at Uni. 😉 I actually like the way you did that as it provides a kind of blinded experience (even better if people weren't told what the red tape meant).
I just recently purchased Vintage P-90 for bridge The clarity is top notch But also I'm playing straight metal with no issues Obviously there is some 60 cycle hum But I added a dummy coil to reduce interference. Definitely going to get vintage Neck next. Video was super helpful. I found the overwound set to be duller compared to the vintage
Yes mate. They sound killer! I’ve kind of overlooked p90’s on my tonal journeys until recently. They definitely have something cool going on. I had planned to use a few different amps for the demo but with just me it was too many variables to keep track of and still keep it consistent.
Just talked to Andy at Tonerider, he said the Rebels are closest to the Vintage90 set. The sound is very slightly different due to the metal cover and construction but still very close.
I’ve never played a vintage example so I can’t really comment on that. However, having played and heard a lot of p90’s, I’m not sure what about the tone or construction couldn’t be replicated? The differences must be fairly nuanced?

I play one of these guitars, my pickup is at 9.1 bridge and that's a great dirt tone in my amp. I would like to try a stacked p90
I much preferred the vintage 90s.
Vintage for me. Hot ones sound dry like a production JB. The hand wound JBs are different

To me the A5 magnets in the Hot's give more mid range but the Vintage A2;'s sound clearer. Prefer the Vintage.
Are they better than the epi p90, the p90 pro? By betterI mean clearer, more detailed, tight bass and crisp highs?

I love the Rebel 90, they sound very slightly different to the standard p90 just due to construction but it’s very slight. I love it in the neck of a Les Paul. Check out this video for a demo -

@@DanLeggatt I was referring to information missing when the change in pickups occurs and didn't mean to say there was a deficit in your video. I'm sure I'm not the only one who doesn't slavishly watch every second of UA-cam videos. Note that you use timestamps and "annotations on the screen" so that people "can skip around". You could have just as easily told people in your introduction that you later say what the exact sequence of tones was going to be (clean tone, pushed tone, light drive tone) and left it at that. You didn't do that probably because it's more helpful for the viewer to have the information at the point in the video when it is immediately relevant (at 1:08). You are, of course, using the international painter's tape communications scheme to communicate when the Hot 90s are installed and when the V90s are installed, which should have been clear to me. Unfortuntely, I missed that lecture on signals while at Uni. 😉 I actually like the way you did that as it provides a kind of blinded experience (even better if people weren't told what the red tape meant).

I just recently purchased Vintage P-90 for bridge
The clarity is top notch
But also I'm playing straight metal with no issues
Obviously there is some 60 cycle hum
But I added a dummy coil to reduce interference.
Definitely going to get vintage

Yeah I would say that’s pretty accurate. Definitely not what would be considered ‘high output’ by humbucker standards.
Nice, the Vintage sounds a little smoother.
But the Hot 90 is more defined. I've tried both and the Hot 90 just feels much better because it's not "fluffy".

Yes mate. They sound killer! I’ve kind of overlooked p90’s on my tonal journeys until recently. They definitely have something cool going on. I had planned to use a few different amps for the demo but with just me it was too many variables to keep track of and still keep it consistent.

Tonerider vintage p90 vs Gretsch fidelisonic p90 for clarity?
Well to answer my own question and to help others, it was definitely the fidelisonics that were muddier.
How do these compare to the Rebel 90 (humbucker sized) pickups?
Just talked to Andy at Tonerider, he said the Rebels are closest to the Vintage90 set. The sound is very slightly different due to the metal cover and construction but still very close.

These sound kinda drab until ya juice up the amp a bit then they sound pretty decent! However, they never quite reach exceptional tho IMO.

I’ve never played a vintage example so I can’t really comment on that. However, having played and heard a lot of p90’s, I’m not sure what about the tone or construction couldn’t be replicated? The differences must be fairly nuanced?
@@DanLeggatt yeah Fralin explain the % of real iron in the screws is different and nobody make a real screw.... Omg we go on the moon and don t know how make a real screw
Interesting. Have you seen any videos that give a tonal example of the differences? I’d be interested to hear how much or how little that actually influences the tone.

the main thing is when you turn down the volume knob....:-)
While that is a cool tone, it’s pretty hard to hear any nuanced differences from a video with iPhone audio and loads of reverb.
are they better, meaning correct vintage p90 sound than the lollar or the SD Ant?
