    So that others wont make the same mistake as me:
    its important, you choose "split itemS at edit or play cursor" (itemSSSS plural !!!) when you choose "item" it does not split all grouped items but onl the one, your cursor is hovering above.
    Also thank you so much alex. this was a huuuuuge gamechanger for me! :)

    That feeling when you click on a new tutorial by a new person just to see how it feels, the choice of words, the tempo, the timbre of the voice, the levels, all that stuff... and on 00:01 you see that "lost in space" look in their eyes and in 00:02 you click Subscribe.

      I picked REAPER last year as my first DAW for the simple reason that it doesn't cost several hundred dollars. I will probably stick with it for that reason, and also because it seems to have everything I need in a DAW. There are some things I can't figure out how to do yet, but I'm sure that's my own failing and I just need to learn more about it.

    In my case, when i try the slip-edit method, everytime i split a region, it creates some tiny fade-out/fade-in, but this doesn't seem to happen to you. Is this normal?

    Nice tricks! Reaper is taking over from Pro Tools for me when it comes to advanced audio editing. We just need groove quantize, and a swing slider like we have in the piano roll, and I'll be as happy as a pig in mud.

    The same job can be done with the stretch markers, which is A LOT easier and faster. Also, those markers work with transient detection as well.

    • @djabthrash
      @djabthrash 4 роки тому

      Different philosophy :)
      Slip editing/Beat Detective style doesn't stretch the audio but removes the natural feel of the drummer (dragging, etc).
      While stretch markers stretch the audio but keeps the natural feel of the drummer.

    Hey man, I'd like to ask you something if you have a minute, I've been doing the split & slip editing since forever, using my old Windows with an old version of Reaper, I had on the "alt+s" group of commands bunch like yours and one last one called "cross-fade into split" which automatically did the cross-fade the moment you split it. The problem is I upgraded now to Windows 10 and updated Reaper, and I just can't seem to find that one last command to add... Have you heard about that one, did it change name or something? Is it still possible to do? Thanks

    Hey, guys. On the 1 minute mark there is a list of commands of the macro. I used to have a similar macro 6 years ago on my old 32 bit Reaper, and it ended with "Cross fade items into split". So it basically did even the cross fading with the macro... I can't find it on the new Reapers tho, any ideas where it might went??? Thanks!

    Hi Alex, great video, I bought Reaper 2 weeks ago myself after being also a cubase user for 8 years. I have problems with quantizing audio in a metalproduction, because there are mixed rhythms all of the time and when I do split editing I discover mainly problems in 2 notes NOT hitting at the same time, flams in a kick and snare track, if i move the kick and snare it all effects my overheads and roommics, so if i first move the kick to the click, all of the stuff is moved to the click, but....then I need to move the snare and it cause strange artifacts in my cymbalsound.. I tried a lot, I dont know how to fix flams.. Do you have some tips???? I checked all the editingstuff on youtube, also by kenny and you, but still it doesnt work for me... THANKS A LOT MAN!!! Cheers, Jeroen Simons, The Netherlands

    • @AlexWilkinsonYYC
      @AlexWilkinsonYYC  7 років тому +3

      There isn't really a good way to fix flams. If you have a drummer that can't hit the kick and snare at the same time,
      record a cymbal pass, a hands/shell pass, and a kick pass so you can edit them all separately. That's the only way to prevent that to my knowledge. It's a nightmare.
      I just make drummers pay and do takes till they get it right, and sometimes literally just punch in the one hit where the kick and snare are off and have them try it 100 times till they get it close, haha.
      Or reprogram it.

    If there is a lot of cymbal bleed in the snare track will you gate the snare track first in the beat detective thing?

    • @AlexWilkinsonYYC
      @AlexWilkinsonYYC  7 років тому +1

      Mashreef Ahmed if it's causing false transients to be detected absolutely. an easy way to do it would be to utilize my DeBleeder plug in over at wilkinsonaudio.com. then render that track with the fx on to new take, transient split and switch it back to the unaffected raw audio.

    • @MashreefAhmed
      @MashreefAhmed 7 років тому

      Will give it a try thank you. Another thing that came into my mind is if we gate and sample replace the snare and the kick (The drum track had bad dynamics) Will it be helpful if those are replaced by one shot samples?

    • @AlexWilkinsonYYC
      @AlexWilkinsonYYC  7 років тому +1

      Helpful in which way? For detection purposes? It would most likely help a lot if you're having a hard time detecting the transients with dynamic split. Might be an easier way to do it though, like highpass or low pass that track to try to isolate the kick sound.

      For stuff like chugs or monophonic leads if the guitar is played clean enough, yes. A cool trick for that is you duplicate your guitars D.I, highpass that track so you just hear the clear pick attack and render it, then group it with the original and dynamic slice the pick attack track so it slices and quantizes the original.

      No one can play accurate enough for a modern recording to not have drum editing. Same as how no one can sing well enough to negate the requirement for autotune.
      In regards to radio conventional pop/country/metal.
      I mean you CAN do it with no editing, but people likely won't like the sound of it vs the edited performance since they're used to the sound of perfect performances these days.
