Having won two BRIT Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, two Ivor Novello Awards, as well as receiving five Grammy Award nominations, James Blunt is a singer-songwriter who has sold over 20 million albums worldwide. He rose to prominence in 2004 with the release of his debut album, Back to Bedlam, which became the best-selling album of the 2000s in the UK. He previously served as a reconnaissance officer in Kosovo under NATO, and actively supports Médecins Sans Frontières and Help For Heroes.
ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.
The Oxford Union is deeply grateful and encouraged by the messages of support in response to our determination to uphold free speech. During our 200 year history, many have tried to shut us down. As the effects of self-imposed censorship on university campuses, social media and the arts show no signs of dissipating, the importance of upholding free speech remains as critical today as it did when we were founded in 1823. i truly love this song and this is the most emotional and genuine performance i've heard to date.
How many years, forever it’s just has a little bit forever song. Honourable.
Feline Cat I agree
James ti amo muito meu amor 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷❤❤❤❤
not interested xD
I'm leaving this comment here so after a month or a year when someone likes it, I get reminded of this song ❤
Listen one more time buddy, amazing song and performance!
Time for you to listen again
Liked and took my time to remind you about this wonderful piece of art
July 2024.... Beautiful song! Came looking for a song to say goodbye to a lover that I have to let go.
No edit.
No Effects
No Autotune
Fresh from the album pure talent. Super underrated.
Zie Zevlag an actual musician, that’s what should be the norm. Commercial crap auto tuned and dancing around like strippers isn’t music, it’s an advertisement forced by corporations who think that’s what people want to hear
Pure, raw talent.
Harriet Tubman not even an American and I know enough about her to know you are out of your mind
@@bauhaus1961 dont listen to this simple song then? dick
@CrappyMcDick ok so lets hear you sing this simple song?
It’s crazy, you can genuinely hear the pain and see the tears in his eyes, sings his heart out. We failed him, criminally underrated. What a man he is.
I agree, unbelievable talent.
Beautiful musician
True statement!
When people say that live performances are never as good as the music video, don't say anything, just show them this video
@@ruttolomeo1987 I prefer his live performances....
This has got to be one of the best live performance of an artist ever
Agreed this or on howard stern bush singing glycerine so good
You clearly haven't seen many performances
Never seen anyone sing with so much passion and emotion ever
You should check out Damien Rice… even tough this is still a tremendous rendition by James Blunt
Blancey check out Glen Hansard, so so emotional and passionate
also Keaton Henson
Andy Hull of Manchester Orchestra
u never seen to Freddie Mercury
This is even sadder than the original studio version...
I love it
The emotion in his voice and face... I feel like my heart is in my mouth as I watch/listen... 💔 such a simple song yet so meaningful and heartfelt. He really means every word. He and his music inspire me so much. I love the line “I am a dreamer, and when i wake, you can’t break my spirit, it’s my dreams you take”.
Beautiful.
His expressions make this more sad 😞
This performance matches the one he did on MTV's unplugged, where I thought he was on the very edge of losing it. I think he does a better job singing this song live, than he does in the studio.
Who is listening may 2024?
July 2024
ive never seen a man walk the line between letting out his emotions and totally breaking down so well. its clear he sings this song wit raw emotion, but he somehow manages to not fall of the edge. its a privillige to watch someone bare their soul and their pain, we can all resonate with how he feels here...
well put😌
word
Yes great
It’s crazy that he sounds exactly like he does in the album
thought the same
thats because he has real talent not studio muffing.. his voice is true and pure
@@mraymer78 totally agree with you
even better I thought
It's not crazy at all this how music is supposed to be, what's crazy is that most musicians these days are auto tuned
This is how every song should be sung. This is the reason music was invented.
no modulation or computer intervention. Just sings like a boss
Music is incredibly broad and open to endless interpretations but this was definitely very nice.
And John Denver
Glad you're here to tell people whats right and wrong
@@apatheticnihilist860 You're welcome
It's like James is making sure that everyone in the audience is listening
It’s amazing how him turning his head 90 degrees looks so natural
The comment i was looking for
@@drmedwuast he was a tank commander - head like an owl
They are listening with their hearts
The gentleman at 3:40 is what really gets me, it looks like he is completely lost in the song. Just imagining him thinking back at someone he once loved.
😢 That would be horrible
Both, the older gent and the younger gent (time 3:40) are so in to this song that this really means to them... and to me.
He was probably thinking of his deceased wife. Love is eternal.
@Gamias Tou UA-cam idiot
@Gamias Tou UA-cam aparently you, who cared enough to type a reply kiddo.
It's crazy to think that James Blunt hates his voice and hates his music, he has said on numerous occasions he doesn't understand why people listen to his stuff, well James, that performance is why
Never heard that before, but that is crazy, his voice is incredible and refreshing to say the least
I love his music always best
Almost all the singers don't like to hear themselves singing, i think it is because they get tired of hearing their voices all the time
I don't think he would be able to perform at this level if hates his voice.
He really can't stand his voice he won't listen to his own music back
Everytime I hear this I'm always scared that he's gonna cry at some point
because hi is an artist
Way ahead of you buddy. I'm wiping snot off my nose by the time the bridge hits.
@Will-I-am ikr:)
Jake Peralta yeah me too, I thought he was. That's ok.
Shame!! You should be crying every single time :)
This man is literally dying at the piano. His performance is blowing everyone and everything out of the water. I could listen to this song for hours.
The most powerful men and women in the world are the ones who destroy your facades, make you cry, make you crumble, reduce you to the purity you were born with. For that moment, all pretences vanish and if you hold onto that moment you are born again.
This song is about a girl Blunt dated, but he wrote it years after the relationship ended. When he appeared on the UK show Songbook, Blunt explained: "I guess it's a realization that you'll never be with someone, but the frustration that they are still alive and out there in the world. It can be an incredibly painful idea - I sat with the song for quite a long time. But for me, it's probably my most personal song. Whereas 'You're Beautiful' is about a moment, one second in time of passing that person, the song 'Goodbye My Lover' is about a lifetime's worth of emotion, the fact that that relationship is over, and that life continues. And yeah, it's the most personal song on Back To Bedlam."
Beautiful...I can relate, absolutely....that being you could not live without is still out there, without you....:-(
Thanks for sharing
why frustrated that they are still alive and out there. be happy that they are!!
This is deep
You can see the tears in his eyes as he sings , he really cared for someone.
@Feri Simalakama his neighbour
be happy that he knew her.
@Marco Franzoi this video was from 4 years ago
@@rattlin9194 Faithful man
Oh no not at all, she's dead to me. Fell off a cliff and died on impact, but still, we can hear his feelings in this song 👍
his voice fighting against the tears at some moments really made me losing it
« i’ll be the father of your CHILD » i felt that maybe too much 😭
I know, me too... I am living that right now and now I perfectly understand every single word...
Is he even real? Omg such a masterpiece, he puts emotions in every single note. A living legend!
... and all this on a 50yrs old instrument
Welcome to the new world
I love the expression on his face this man. 😍
oh my God ,he is great
+shadrack kipchirchir Yes ☺.
His eyes seem so emotional, and expression , too
i just think he's still hurt from that past relationship that inspired this beautiful song. it resonates real deep in so many people, and my life is like a word per word translation of how it is now and how i feel about my beak up 4 years ago, and i too have a child from that girl, she was my everything, and i let it go... and i too feel so hollow!, cheers you all!
Jonathan Malraisont Kautt hope u all the best
People holding their phones the whole time are so fucking annoying, enjoy the performance
Also recording vertical wtf haha
Yeah fuck them, just live your life in the moment instead of through a 4 inch fucking screen...
you say that as you watch the vid...
Yeah but the video was made properly by the event organisers, not by an idiot holding a phone vertically
FalcaoXTZ I feel it
Regardless of whether the genre is for you, it's truly one of the best written love songs ever, personally speaking.
yes, I would still put "Love of my life" above and I also love "Still loving you"
I found this song when my daughter died. Her life companion sent it to me. It was his song for her. She was 41 and fought her heart disease until she was too tired to fight anymore. ❤
Just here listening for the 1000th time to this masterpiece and wondering if the people holding their phones up felt stupid when they discovered that the video was later shared on UA-cam and that they should have enjoyed it instead
Bro I thought the exact same thing haha. I think only musicians can really appreciate the power of live music enough to tell people to put their fucking phones away.
Me: Im the most depressed person.
James Blunt: Hold My Beer
I'm sorry for your loss i too have been there and still going through it now as we speak i struggle with dreams because they eventually become lies

I always said to my wife: honey, when i'm dead, please play this song on my furneral. In 2008, i was very sick (hydrocaephelis) and in the hospital i was ready for my final operation. My wife was waiting in the reataurant of the hospital. The chance of surviving the operation was 20%......after a hour, she heard this song in the restaurant. Then she thought that it was a sign, he's dead. He didn't survive the operation. But i did......and every time i hear this song, i'm crying. Sometimes hard and sometimes only tears. But wow, it's so beautiful.
wow i am glad that you are alive.
So who didn’t survive the operation?
Read it again but slowly.
Glad you’re still here mate 👍🏻
I don't suffer from chills down the spine. your post gave me chills. God bless you and yours with a long and healthy life. hold her hand when she's asleep tonight.
Who is listening Feb 2023
I've cried, how is he THAT emotional, and still he's not shedding a tear but his voice has so much pain in there
Its amazing that he can still can still this song with such conviction after playing it probably thousands of times over the last 10+ years. Amazing artist
BKMPictures I was thinking the exact same thing.
He manages to put his whole heart when hi sings, even if the song is about a miserable situation and he's happily married now. He must have all the pain and love he used while composing in a special place in his heart where he can get it out whenever he needs to
I agree
exactly!
Well put
Blown away by this performance, and his incredible song writing
he wrote "You're Beautiful", or am I wrong?
Did some quick googling, it seems he usually as 2 other people writing with him.
Holy shit, me too. I've never particularly liked this song as on the record, but I just came across this live performance and I don't know what happened to him, but pardon me swearing again, fuck, that was beautifully delivered. The emotions were so present from the very first second to the last.
Asi Kla couldn't agree more such a amazing performance
The way he sings with all his heart and soul touches me.
It's like watching someones heart break over and over every time he sings this
I think he was hurt In the past because in all the videos I see the pain in his eyes and make me feel sad and with this song is worst for me... nice very nice song and voice is perfect 👌
After so many years his voice is the same. One of the best songs ever and I agree with you and you can also hear the pain in his voice. Never saw someone singing with so much feeling!
i agree... but there was one for me who showed his pain much more. Maybe he showed it too much ... RIP Kurt Cobain
He was a soldier, He knows about the sadness !!!!

Kevin Enrique Carranza Suarez everyone was hurt in the past.
I saw people take out their phones to film something that was already being recorded.
Then I saw an older man with white hair and a grey suit (check vid) bow his head and listen to James.
I don't think the people filming got it - but I think the old man in the grey suit did. He got it.
Ok that legit can make someone cry. What you wrote.
Makes you wonder what he's been through.😭😭
Emilee Feaster absolutely 😭
@piggypigpig I think you username is apt pig.
I always felt this older man had lost someone so special.
Now, that's a song you buy. Not just taste.
Bruh that catapulted me outta feels to bustin out laughin
That old man seated there you can tell this song hits him different.
I thought at some point James will cry, singing with lots of passion and emotions
He can also tell you how much it sucks to have to crane your neck around to look at the performer.

The passion in his facial expression’s when hes in the zone is quite impressive. He’s got pure talent no auto tune needed n a completely unique voice.
The passion is incredible. You can really hear the pain in his voice
In 6 decades I’ve seen some performances, but I can’t recall seeing anything like that.
That's what I call a 6 decade mouth 👍
Wow. What an amazing tribute
Watch John Lennons performance of his song 'Mother' from his 1972 concert in New York.. Breathtaking as well.
He should have got a standing ovation for this brilliant performance....
They were too busy uploading it to snapchat
All those people filming the performance instead of just enjoying it completely and realizing how lucky they are to witness this scene of pure music.
You do realize you can hold the phone to the side at one position while watching right
He truly sang with his hearth . At the point when he gets emotional you'll realise that he really loved someone and that someone made really remarkable scar in his life.. I love this performance. True artist without a doubt.

Did I disappoint you or let you down?
Should I be feeling guilty or let the judges frown?
'Cause I saw the end, before we'd begun
Yes, I saw you were blind and I knew I had won
So I took what's mine by eternal right
Took your soul out into the night
It may be over but it won't stop there
I am here for you if you'd only care
You touched my heart, you touched my soul
Changed my life and all my goals
And love is blind, and that I knew when
My heart was blinded by you
I've kissed your lips and held your head
Shared your dreams and shared your bed
I know you well, I know your smell
I've been addicted to you
Goodbye my lover
Goodbye my friend
You have been the one
You have been the one for me
Goodbye my lover
Goodbye my friend
You have been the one
You have been the one for me
I am a dreamer and when I wake
You can't break my spirit, it's my dreams you take
And as you move on, remember me
Remember us and all we used to be
I've seen you cry, I've seen you smile
I've watched you sleeping for a while
I'd be the father of your child
I'd spend a lifetime with you
I know your fears and you know mine
We've had our doubts but now we're fine
And I love you, I swear that's true
I cannot live without you
Goodbye my lover
Goodbye my friend
You have been the one
You have been the one for me
Goodbye my lover
Goodbye my friend
You have been the one
You have been the one for me
And I still hold your hand in mine
In mine when I'm asleep
And I will bear my soul in time
When I'm kneeling at your feet

In 2005 the love of my life and I broke up. This song takes me back to 2005. While she moved on, I have never found love like I had with her. After our breakup was the first time I heard this song I held on this song until now and always bitter sweet to travel back in time to the 4 years I spent with my college sweet heart.
2:10 he almost bursts into tears, so much emotion in this, what a performance
earing his breath shaking.. pfiou.. intense..
you can tell that part hurts him. In all his live performances you can see this part killing him

I spent a night at Heathrow looping on this song, contemplating the fall behind the rail at the departures of terminal 5 and thinking if I should just take the step. Eventually I didn't do it... there. But I survived and she came back.
Few years have passed but this song has always the power of taking me back to that moment and it allows me to conserve those feelings. I do not care how bad they are, they are a part of me.

James Blunt is not topping the charts because he’s not for the “clout” seekers, or the “hit makers” or the “billion stream reachers”. James is in a superior category of music that doesn’t even have charts

I know no one will read this but I'll write it anyway! I remember finding this video 6 years ago after breaking up with my ex. At the time I was really heartbroken and listened to this video many many times. But with the passage of time I grew to realise that that breakup was the best thing to ever to happen to me! Feel every Word he sang...and he too. His eyes and Voice tells Stories .
To be honest, I never really believed in Love story, I always
thought it was a vocabulary full of illusions, which would always be
subject to a big disappointment, until a beautiful day..................
I found my happiness in a magical way !!! It was early spring and we were both walking down the same street, coming back after a long day at work, me going to university and she to high school, we crossed our paths and our eyes.I felt something very strong (bigger than myself), a few meters ahead I went back and talked to her and I was sure that she had felt the same (pure magic of destiny). We dated, got married, had kids, kids got married, and we're together after more than thirty years. Our feelings were correct, that connection of looks was true love, strong enough to last a lifetime. I would make the same choice thousands of times in thousands of other lives! True love is a great and wonderful miracle !!!
2005 give me my 10 year of my life back
James Blunt can sing and his voice really touches you. Sounds the same live and in the studio, now that's a real artist. he deserves more respect
I will always envy the ones sitting there in that hall witnessing one of the best live performances ever. That performance filled my heart and gave me goosebumps even while watching it on UA-cam, I can't imagine the emotional aura it must have had in that hall...the audience really did take a part of James back home that day!

I feel You mate, it happened to me. One month ago She left. The sting of every word as You said, describes it perfectly. You can still feel the pain in his voice and see it on his face; it is a really emotional piece.
Red Dae I don't feel that I will ever be whole again. The pain is unbearable.
Totally agree with all of you, going through a similar situation and every word in this song is down right how I feel and it does hurt, plus the piano melody is just beautiful and sad at the same time. I had never heard this song until last night and man it had me in tears. As sad a song as this is it is on the top of my favorite songs now. By the way this performance is amazing as well, he truly is a great artist.
I have just lost my husband after 35 years. My heart is truly broken and I feel as if someone has ripped my arm off and I will never be the same! I know nothing about James Blunt but this song perfectly captured how I feel and is incredibly emotive and heart breaking. When he sings ‘you have been the one for me’ I just break down. Thank James for an amazing song and a wonderful vocal performance. This song for me is a bit like Sia’s Chandelier - if they had never recorded anything else then they are both total geniuses and great performers. I am so hollow baby!
All my best wishes to you.
Geez.... Pure talent... No effects... No auto tune... Just pure listening pleasure. I can appreciate a artist like this
