I had a similar experience during the Battle for Zendikar set. I managed to collect 13 expedition lands from the set and went on vacation with my family. I got a call from my local store on the second day of my vacation only to be informed that my roommate was trying to sell my collection (including all 13 expedition lands). Thankfully I was what some might refer to as a “regular” at said store and they IMMEDIATELY knew that I wouldn’t be selling my collection, nor would I have my scummy roommate sell them for me. They told him it would take a few hours to price all the cards and that they’d need to go to the bank because they didn’t have nearly enough cash on hand. The manager then said that they’d call him when they ready. Well, they put my collection in their safe, called the police and then called scummy roommate to inform him they had his $ ready. Being the dumbass he was, he sped over to the store only to be immediately arrested. I was SUPER GRATEFUL to Mikey and all the employees at CM games in Chattanooga!!!! If anyone from CM games happens to read this, thanks again!

@Sam Yessir, they closed the Gunbarrel location a few years back, but I know Mikey is running the Northgate location these days. I moved away from Chattanooga shortly after Oath of the Gatewatch launched and haven’t been back in a while, but I still occasionally call just to chat with Mike. Amazing store, even better people! I can’t lie, I’ve been to about a dozen stores where I live now and not one comes even remotely close to CM Games. I’m thrilled to hear that others feel the same and I hope for nothing but continuing success and happiness for Mikey and CM Games! Thanks for the replies!

My LGS had a black lotus but only put a picture of it on display.
For security, the card was at a different location in a vault (not even the employees know where it's kept).
If someone was interested in buying it, then they would proceed to let the owner know and had a guard nearby.
At first I thought that's a bit overkill, but now I think that's a smart move.

My favourite dealer in southern Germany just has a highend longbox for cards valued at 200 or more Euros, and there is some serious power in that box. The box is worth probarbly half a million. He has 5 or 6 employees working on his online single card selling, one of them is the grader, and a LGS, and currently 280K cards listed on Cardmarket. The longbox, containing all the highend-stuff double sleeved in toploaders, for all i know just sits in a shelf in a room only senior employees are supposed to enter. What he does have is 100% loyal and trusted employees, and a shitload of security cameras, obvious and hidden. No safe or vault to my knowledge. MTG tournaments are held just two doors and 5 meters from the valuables.
The awesome thing is i have access to a professional grader, he does not slab cards, he grades for sales on Cardmarket and Ebay, and he is ultra strict and extremely knowledgeable. Raw cards remain raw, but he can tell you precisely how different grading companies would grade the card and why, including subgrades. Prices on the singles are rather high, but i know how strict their grading is. Just in the process of picking up an International Edition Black Lotus from them, they listed it as nearmint but i know its pristine except for the tiniest fingernail mark on the back near the lower left corner. Not playable at all, but getting International Edition or Collectors Edition with perfect corners and near-perfect edges is rare. The only thing that annoys me, is that when i tell him "I think i am considering buying this card" he immediately sends it to me, with an invoice. But i always pay and keep the card.

As comforting as the idea of rich collectors hoarding valuable art or cards may be, the reality is that stolen items (especially easily-identifiable ones) are a liability for the thieves. Most theft is opportunistic rather than planned, and even in cases like the Black Lotus you'll often find they don't know much about the thing they are stealing... they just know it's "valuable". The sad truth is that being "one of a kind" becomes a problem that's often solved by altering/damaging the card to disguise it to sell (best case scenario)... in the worst case, it's thrown out or destroyed.

  • @Torch_of_Sin

If I was him I would mail the card back to the store because, you can do it anonymously and it's like saying sorry and the store owner might drop the police report in relief that they got the card back. It would be a crazy story too.

I think they should all be flogged for the crimes of stealing people's hard earned collections... however, the bad thing about some of these cases, in particular the recent Black Lotus theft, is that once the theft starts gaining widespread media attention, the thief is very unlikely to come out of hiding with it. Unless they are EXTREMELY idiotic. So in my opinion, it's a double edged sword. You want to let the local MtG community aware of the theft, without the word getting out over news and social media.

I had a similar experience to the first one. I had left my backpack in the front seat of my car because when I got back from the game store one night it was downpouring so hard I figured I'd leave it in there and in the morning before it gets too hot, bring it in. In the morning my window was smashed out and backpack gone. Now, I only play limited, so the only card of value were some rares of the few most recent drafts, so really the backpack was the most valuable item, and I had worked hard to get matching basics for my draft set, so I text the local game store what happened. Not even a day later my friend from the game store texts me "got your cards, see you for draft night". As it turns out, they went to this game store (one of two in my area) to sell "our son's old cards, he doesn't play anymore" and my friend at the store just said, "I personally know who's cards these are, you can wait for police, or never come through here again, your choice, but I'm keeping the back pack"

Not as worthwhile as some of these stories, but I had a card stolen out of my deck once. This was years ago and had a FTV:Legends Ulamog in my tron deck. I was at an FNM and was talking to someone about the deck and they asked to see the cards because they were curious about playing the deck at some point and I said sure (Strike 1). Strike 2 against myself was me putting my stuff away in my bag, so time of opportunity for them to yoink the card. I hadn't noticed it was missing until sometime later that night. I thought it was misplaced or something.
I go back to the game store some months later and see it staring at me in the case. It was still in my gold classic dragonshield sleeve I had the deck in at the time. I couldn't just say hey, that's my ulamog in the case because while I knew the owners, I was not on the grounds of starting shit and having to try to prove to them a card in the case was mine. MF'er sold it to the store for credit or cash. Wasn't his first time doing stuff like that either and he was banned from the store some number of years later.
    Still haunts me.

Got a small story from several years ago about a MTG card thief. Basically, he was hired to work at a card shop (he had a key). One night he took all the MTG cards and never came back. The next morning, the owner came in to find all the MTG cards missing and immediately checked the tapes, then called the cops as soon as he knew he had proof. They have cameras at this store so luckily they were able to catch the perpetrator. The police knew who he was cuz, like I said earlier, he worked at the store. So they got an easy warrant to search the guy's place (along with arresting him). Unfortunately, the cards were either already hidden away or sold off (and the money hidden) by the time police got there. To this day, the cards are still not found. I think the guy has at least 5-15 more years of jailtime before he can (theoretically) reap his rewards, wherever they are.

I eventually went to the office who checked the cameras and discovered it was a kid named Ben.. they called him to the office and they asked him about it and he denied everything until they showed him the footage from the library and of him stashing it in his locker after free time.. I forgave him and told everyone else I had just misplaced it in the library and found it after double checking the area.. 3 months later and it turns out he was caught red handed by another one of the kids from our play group stealing a video game from his house.. After learning this I went ahead and revealed to everyone that I hadn’t lost my binder but it was Ben who got caught with it.. I've tried to get back in to MTG since, and made more decks, but ultimately, I just kinda stopped playing...

I can't remember the name, but there was an NFL player that got a backpack stolen that had quite a bit in it. Multiple Commander decks multiple legacy decks. I remember the collection was worth around 25k

My cards were stolen in the 90's... It made me so sick i only just got over it around khaldheim now i am hooked again! Lol! My only consolation is my dual-lands were all below NM except maybe three or four... I had a whole set of esper with red green and blue greensets and a few others it pains me to recall... Anyways it was a quarter million collection not the millions i was imagining lol so i can bear to play again...

So a few buddies of mine and i were in a car crash, while we were passed out in the car people stole our bags.. My binders and all my decks were in there.. About a week later we were still in the hospital when the manager at our LGS phoned me to let me know they had caught two sketchy looking to sell a collection and it was mine.. Man cried real tears that day, my collection was built up over the last 10 years of play and i thought I'd lost it all

The difference between stealing the double signed Lotus and the Mona Lisa is that eventually people will have forgotten about the card being stolen, even if it is 10 years from now, and he will be much more able to find a buyer who has no idea of the background, one would think.

He’s probably going to do what I do with my reserved list cards. Open his binder and stare at it. 😂

For that last guy, i'm pretty sure he could get away safely selling it on one of those anonymous darknet marketplaces. Heck, he probably already did.

Man i got a friend who has a card shop and they enter and steal over 40k In cards. Thankfully the island is small and manage to find some cards, but the rarest were never found

Apparently some player somewhere has this thing on their wall in their home. I mean this double signed black lotus is beautiful and like the Mona Lisa while you cant sell it or play with it, you still very much can enjoy it. If I had it, that is where it would be. Like art stolen during WW2, good luck finding it until someone unknowingly tries to sell it. I bet in the end someone's mother tosses it sadly in the trash.
