- fluency, here we come.
this one is for all my dual nationality kids who weren't raised bilingual. I see you. I feel you. I dare you to engage with your family's language! 🌟
My Mum is from Friesland and my Oma speaks limited English. A huge motivation in this is to have better conversations with her! My process in this video used only free resources on the internet, but I'd love to find a more structured way to commit myself over time! I'm going to ring a Dutch subscriber, friend or family member once a week to keep improving ☺

Hey Jade. Hope you and your family are safe/well? I had a really rough day today, I got 42% in an exam and I just wanted to make my parents proud. If you see this then I’d love to know what you’d do. So sorry for the negativity. Z x
Hi Jade! What an inspirational video :) One thing I would suggest to make learning pronunciation in any language easier is to learn how to use the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet). It's a way of writing out pronunciations with symbols, which makes it easier to learn pronunciation because it's more precise than just listening to the words. I personally learned it by using Wikipedia's help guides for the IPA with commonly used symbols (just search Help:IPA/Dutch on Wikipedia for Dutch IPA symbols) and by doing some research on how the IPA in general works. After that, you can memorise the symbols and their usage by transcribing texts (I used song lyrics, but you can use anything) into their IPA pronunciation. Hope this helps!
Thanks! Het is zo leuk OM jou in het Nederlands TE horen spreken 😜
As a dutch person, this is soo cool to watch!! Since dutch is not a very commonly spoken language it's so delightful to see an English person trying to learn our language!!

Quinty M yeah your right. She’s doing really good
I'm another British (Welsh) person learning it, I've been quite neglectful of it recently but am trying to pick it up again. It's just such a lovely language!

1. Memorise 300 most commonly used words.
2. Immersion > movies and music.
3. Grammar, tenses and conjugation + 50 most used verbs
4. Call a Dutchie and talk to mum > who are both native speakers.
I can tell the ‘goedemorgen allemaal’ got so much better that it sounded like an actual dutch person
Not going to lie your dutch accent is actually good. Typically when you hear foreigners speak (fluent) dutch they still have a strong accent. However, I don't find this the case with you at all. With enough practice I think you could learn dutch more quickly than the average person trying to learn dutch.
That's probably because she's heard her mother's side of the family speak Dutch while growing up so she's able to recognize some words and learn it without a foreign accent.
Her case is similar to mine actually. I'm an Indonesian who grew up in Canada but couldn't speak Indonesian. So when I moved to Indonesia, it took me a few months to learn the language but I ended up speaking it fluently without having a foreign accent because I subconsciously already internalized my parents accents when they were talking to each other.

Good to know that other dutchies just substitute the english words in conversation. I was raised speaking both dutch and english here in New Zealand and so I'm never surrounded by other dutch speaking people except for my parents, so I find myself getting things wrong all the time XD
Dutch is one of the hardst language in Europese learn
As a Dutch girl who grew up speaking A LOT of English, this was so interesting. Whenever you’d switch between the languages it would take me a few seconds for me to realize that you actually switched speaking languages. Weird. But I reckon that’s also ‘cuz your pronunciation is VERY good, regardless of the fact that your mum is Dutch. It’s a very difficult language (also my worst subject in school lmao) you should be very proud of yourself! ❤️
I’m half German as was spoken to in German as a kid but we moved to the uk when I was three and lost most of my understanding for the language, but in the last year I have been working hard, speaking to my mum and am almost fluent again. It’s so cool that you are taking the time to learn your second language, I have someone who I can relate to 😅 Good on you jade!

There are people who come to the Netherlands from all over the world and they take years to learn. You study for a week and you're almost as far as some people are after all those years. You really have a great feeling for languages.👍🏆🇬🇧🇳🇱
Tbh If you would say: “ik ga meer Nederlands leren vandaag” in an every day conversation, no one would notice the wrong word order. Native speakers do it too.
Diede Kaak eh I don’t know anyone who does that tbh
Also, you sound really dutch when you say: "Goedemorgen allemaal," that really threw me off xD

dat is heel leuk.
This is actually amazing hahaha. You brought a smile to my face, and I'm truly amazed to find out there are people who want to learn our impossibly difficult language!
Btw dutch grammar is really hard and even people who’ve lived here a long time (or even native speakers) get it wrong. I think that you will be alright after many weeks, but you’ve already come *so* far in such a short while! Your accent is a bit english sometimes but I hear so much potential for an authentic Dutch accent too 😊
It's soooooooo easy for dutch people to get their own grammar wrong hahaha. I've always read a lot of books so I feel like seing the grammar that way has always made sense to me but I know whe I was 13 I was the literal grammar police. (Not proud of it, but goes to show that we're so bad at our own grammar that people feel inclined to take up the role of grammar police)
I think that is the case in most languages.
@@langoverload Dutch is worse than other languages, trust me. It's easier for me to learn French and English and write a text in those languages than by using my native language lmao, especially English: French is hard as well.

I like how you corrected the word-order on

As a Dutch person it's always so fun to watch people learn! You did so good! Ga zo door! ☀️
I think the hardest things in the Dutch language are:
- the G sound
- the fact that both 'de' and 'het' mean 'the' in English
- separate verbs
- the fact that in grammar, we have 2 pages of exceptions on one rule
G sound, though a bit further back than most ch/kh/x sounds than German/Slavic/other European languages, is not that bad to learn. 'ui' is a lot more of a nightmare since vowels are typically a lot tougher to learn. Speaking only English you require 'u', 'eu' (you could argue some accents already use this instead of 'o' sometimes), 'ij' (which is built up of 'e' in "bed" and 'i' in "bid"), and hardest of all 'ui' (which is built up of /ɶ/ and 'u', and /ɶ/ does not occur in any Standard Dutch word). As for separable verbs, we simply glue them together in some forms (the infinitive and participles only tho) whereas in English they are always separated.
En dt fouten
I applaud your effort. I'm a Dutchie myself by the way. And "wie is de mol" is awesome :)
Something I really like about this too is that I can genuinely tell that everyday you sounded more fluent as you continued on, your pronunciation at certain moments sounded SUPER fluent, and then moments after it went back into your accent again, overall you're doing amazingly and I think you'll be fluent in no time hahah

I just don’t get international parent who don’t learn their kids their native language!
In this case it's probably because most Dutch people are bilingual ☺️ we don't dub shows, uni courses are often taught in English and if you live in a city you wouldn't have to know a single Dutch word to get around 🤷♀️ lots of internationals work in retail and restaurants. Speaking Dutch isn't required to get around here☺️😀
Well, Dutch isn’t really a language that’s a lot in use. Only the Netherlands, part of Belgium, Luxembourg and some Antilles speak Dutch. If you don’t use it, and it’s not important why would you teach your children Dutch? Dutch is a really hard language with a lot of rules, it’s not easy to learn.
@@maraverlaan7893 if you speak dutch to your kids from when they're born they will pick up the language easily though. And yeah dutch might not be used in many places, but she still has family in the netherlands so it would always be handy to know, even if english is pretty well-known there. Not every dutch person is fluent in english.
I agree that it's a huge missed opportunity for kids not to be raised bilingually! But it can feel like hard work for the parent whose native language isn't spoken where the family lives: you have to always speak your native language to your kid and often that means switching from another language, for instance if you were having a conversation with the other parent too and then they leave. And kids often go through a phase where they don't want to use your language because you're the only one using it, and then you have to stick to it. So it can be hard, but it is so worth it!
Loved this! You got my motivation to learn Dutch up and running again!
worth to watched this. dankuwel! I'm learning my dutch also now and hoping one day, I'll speak it fluently haha

Veel liefs van je Nederlandse kijker 🇳🇱 🇧🇪

Hallo Floor,
Hier even een tipje voor t gebruiken van "your" en "you're/you are". Your gebruikt je wanneer je "jouw" wilt zeggen. You're/you are gebruik je wanneer je iemand wilt zeggen wat diegene is. Bijvoorbeeld " you're pretty" of "you are pretty".
I really like this. It made me smile and made me proud of you. I am Dutch and I think you did a great job!
This has helped me organize what I should focus on when learning Dutch and French (or any new language) before visiting Netherlands and Belgium in the very near future so dank je wel! (I hope I spelled that right)
