    I think the cruise lines should make smaller ships too... sometimes you just want a "real" vacation... without a massive crowd of people taking all the chairs and making the pools look like ponds.

      IMO bigger ships have more space & more to do. There's nothing you can do on a small ship that ou cannot do on the bigger size. Plus all 2500 passengers are crammed into fewer spaces so tada.

However yes the chairs in sun area were ridiculous but we don’t want to sit in the sun all day we like to move about even on sea days there was stuff to do with out all the “toys

    No interest in the Mega ships. Long time and often cruisers, we have no desire to go on these monster ships. We have even turned down a couple sweet deals from the cruise line. No thanks. We enjoy the smaller ships. Being a retired cop and raised 5 boys, being stuck on a ship with 10k people and a bunch of kids running a muck, no thanks. Small and quiet.

    I’m not a mega ship guy. I think there are just too many people for an enjoyable vacation. Venues, shore excursions etc are just crowded. Even when doing your own thing in a port that has 4,5 mega ships in port makes for crowds and congestion. We tried a cruise line that has ships that hold 2500-2900 passengers and that seems to be our sweet spot.

    Absolutely with Juneau on this one. They should be able to spend the money as they please. Something tells me that the cruise lines are lobbying CLIA to raise an issue out of nothing here in order to sell more wifi packages

    • @rebel8451
      @rebel8451 2 місяці тому

      Just like "The Offer" shows how the mafia created the American Italian Anti-Defamation League to "dispel" belief there was a mafia, the cruise lines don't lobby CLIA, they are CLIA. Instead of saying CCL, RC, and NCL sue Port of Juneau, they use smoke and mirrors to hide behind the name of CLIA, so CLIA takes the wrap when the public disagrees with the suit, and you book another cruise happily. Also worth noting that they can use muscle through CLIA name to threaten boycotting ports, and CLIA can lobby money into politicians pockets while cruise lines claim plausible deniability (read willful ignorance).

    FWIW, As cruisers, shouldn't we want good things for the places were we port? Things that improve their community and offset wear and tear on the infrastructure we admittedly bring? If they want to add public Wi-Fi as part of that then that's fine because it's an advantage for other people to use and it's going towards upgrading the port.

    I have a eGolf here in Prague. I live in a green flat- so we get power from wind, solar and geothermal. I get free charging at the parking garage at my flat, at a lot of parking spaces and lots in downtown Prague, and when I do pay for charging it costs about half as much to charge to go the same distance the equivalent gasoline car would go. I also get free registration. It works here because of the incentives- the war has really increased green initiatives, and for longer trips we just take trains, as we have really good rail service and coverage here.

    • @RiverWoods111
      @RiverWoods111 2 місяці тому +4

      Yeah, that then makes sense for you, but for Americans, 90% of the charging stations are petrol/coal turned into electricity. We also don't have good rail systems or good public transport. Then there is the fact that the US is so huge. I have ridden the trains in the US and to travel from the basically Canadian Border (not quite but fairly close) 1/2 way to the southern end took 15 hours. It would have taken me another 15 hours to reach Mexico's border. When I moved from the Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean in my car it took me 5 full days of driving, with hotel stays. On a train with all their stops, and crap it would have been a 10-day trip in my estimation. I also have problems with the idea of having to sit in my car for long periods wherever waiting for the car to charge, because driving long distances is very much necessary in the US. The biggest problem is that if the power supply isn't coming from solar, wind, or other sustainable energy sources, then the Electric vehicles are not worth it. I also have an issue with what happens to them when they get old. I can continually repair a combustion engine for a very long time, and the combustion engine lasts a lot longer than your electric batteries will. This means your batteries will end up in landfill as toxic waist a lot faster and therefore there will be a long-term hit to the ecosystem and not the gain you think you are getting. Not to mention the eco cost of making all the solar panels and batteries which is not a clean process either.

    • @stevemcgowen
      @stevemcgowen 2 місяці тому +2

      @@RiverWoods111 Gasoline and natural gas is artificially cheap in America, so will be decades behind Europe in green technology.
      In cities what comes out of the tailpipe is what matters, not so much how the electricity is generated, as coal and other power plants are outside of cities and have scrubbers. EV batteries are also recycled.

      . You nailed it. It's great in smaller countries but not ideal in the US. I live in central Maine. I would have to drive over 40 miles at this time to find a charging station. We are 50 miles from a major city. In Maine, MAJOR is over 10 K lol. There was an initiative to phase out gas power. It was knocked down quickly. Could you imagine if you had a farm and they outlaw gas powered vehicles? I don't know if John Deer is making a bunch of rechargeable tractors, but I doubt it. While it may make sense for over populated areas like NYC to use them locally, when you live an hour from the nearest Walmart, it doesn't. I know I was being a little over dramatic with the farm vehicles but, isn't just a matter of time? In addition my hubby is an Owner/ Operator freight relocation engineer lolololol (truck driver!) Having to stop every 3 hrs and hope you can find a charger is a terrible thought. Lol you won't be getting your goods ordered online in 3 days if that happens. Then there is automation. It's great til there is a solar flare and satellite connection is lost.

      @@jenbrooks5872 The mistake Americans make is thinking everything must be done nationwide, rather than in states. If all the states do something, then it becomes nationwide.
      Volvo is making EV lorries for Europe. They go 1000km on a charge. Here in Europe truck drivers have required breaks, so they charge during their breaks. John Deere and others have been testing not only electric tractors, but autonomous electric tractors.

And it being desolate on those roads only supports the fact that we need to build the infrastructure up. I purchase wifi packages all the time for work. I don't particularly care for sea days and so I spend my daytime getting some work done while I enjoy my evening entertainment.

    Airports typically have free WiFi, which is paid for by all passengers, usually by charges passed to the airlines and then on to the passengers, or through airport improvement fees paid as part of the passengers' tickets. How would the Juneau cruise terminal be different from an airport terminal in this regard? Both are managed by a body responsible to public officials, both serve a diverse traveling public who may choose to use some services and not others, and both get pushback from the transportation companies from time to time on their decisions. In the end, the local authority usually gets their way.

    My husband and I both drive 2017 Chevy Volts. We love them. They are a plug in hybrid. Basically we charge them over night. On average we get 45 miles on all electric, then it switches over to gas. Most of our driving is just on electric. I probably get gas every other month. And that’s because sometimes I take longer trips. I do not want an all electric because we like to travel and don’t want to be stuck having to follow a rout in able to charge. And we don’t want to have to stop for a long time so that we can charge. And what if the power goes out or we forget to charge, then we might be stuck. Or the dreaded, you run out of electric while you are out driving. It’s not like you can get a ride or walk to the nearest charging station and fill up a can of battery and bring back to your car and be on your way. I like the gas backup option.

    Hi Tony. WOW, 8 new ships NCL. Haven't they been talking about a pier for a few years now? Very cool on the Lego. Shore power is a great move to improve the environment. I have to admit, I had no idea who Hanna is. Don't know Johnathan ether. Lol. Port fees and what they are used for. Everyone wants a piece of it. As always thank you for all you do. ❤

    I drive a Mustang Mach-E and I LOVE IT. I plug it in at night when needed. My electric bills haven’t gone up that I’ve noticed, and I don’t even know what gas prices are anymore. Easy to charge on the road and getting easier. Super-fast acceleration. Electric’s not perfect, but I sure like my car. 👍🏼

      Had a Prius. It was great till the hybrid started failing. We kept it going for a few years by changing individual battery cells, but you couldn't drive far in the car because you never knew when a cell would go bad. I bought a CRV and let my son use the Prius to drive to school. He drove it a couple of years, changing battery cells as needed until he wrecked it and got it out of our hair for good. That was the worst car purchase I ever made.

    We are early adopters of EV's from back in 2013. I drove a Chevy Spark EV for 6 years as a 150 mile a day commuter and loved it. We still own it and now with 130K miles on it it only has a range of 50 miles so my daughter drives it to get around town; drives it to school and friends etc... We now own a new Hyundai Ioniq 5 which can get from up here in the SF Bay Area to the LA cruise port with just one stop to charge for about 20 minutes. I can honestly say I would never want to go back to an ICE vehicle as the idea of the ridiculous maintenance costs, (oil changes, smog checks, breaks etc...) and going out of my way to stop at a gas station to have to fuel up, (my EV is full of electricity every morning, just like my phone) are just inconveniences I never want to experience again. The only headache is the extremely poor public charging infrastructure, and here in California its better than most of the rest of the country, but it's still really bad.

    Hey hey hey T. I bought my first Tesla in 2016. In 2018 my husband got his, so we’ve not had any ICE cars in 5-6 years. Obviously we love it. Not having to gas up is the biggest perk. I leave the house with a “full tank” every day. Also there’s almost zero maintenance needed as there’s no engine/belts/hoses. I’m currently on my third Tesla and still love driving them. They have excellent safety ratings.
    I personally wouldn’t consider a different EV unless they had the ability to charge at Tesla Supercharger stations. Almost all automakers will be compatible with the network moving forward. Tesla has the best infrastructure for away from home charging.

    EVs are good unless you are going on a road trip or drive a lot in cold weather. Example- my husband borrowed an EV once for us to make a 4 hour drive in the winter. It was really cold. We had to stop to charge the car on the way but no charging stations were on our route, so we had to drive an hour out of our way, charge the car for 45 minutes, then drive an hour back to our route. A 4 hour trip turned into a 7 hour trip all because we weren't driving a gas vehicle.
